The drummer is Larnell Lewis. He was a late addition to this recording, and learned most of the songs on the plane ride from America to the Netherlands. This band is absolutely incredible.
I’ve watched this clip well over 20 times and still not tired of it. I get goosebumps each time , but at different points in the performance. I’ve watched many reactions to Snarky Puppy, but yours is the best. Your expressions, your search for adequate description of what you just witnessed and your appreciation of their elite musicianship is inspiring. Thank you.
I've been following Snarky Puppy for 11 years now, starting with their _Tell Your Friends_ album in 2010 and _GroundUP_ in 2012 (STILL one of my favorite albums). That being said, I envy the fact I will never have the experience of having never heard of them, and someone casually sending me this link on Facebook & recommending this video, saying, _"You will like this."_ Then me getting to watch the video with no preconceived expectations. I will never have that, & I envy you. That may be why I watch so many reaction videos, so I can vicariously relive that first moment through others. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
A couple of points I haven’t yet seen in the comments. 1. The verse and chorus (for lack of a more descriptive term) are both in 5/4; the chorus is twice as fast (in one live performance, M. League says it’s their version of ‘dub step’). 2. The group was formed at a University in Texas which has been a Mecca for jazz musicians for decades; SP currently calls Brooklyn NY home. 3. The reason that other keyboard player is so incensed is because earlier in the session he had his own watershed moment on a piece featuring him called “Sleeper”. He, apparently, thought he was going to have the hottest track on the album up until Corey captured lightning in a bottle with that momentous solo. If you need another SP track to listen to, I’ll offer two for you to choose from: “Something”, (feat. L. Hathaway) [SP’s 1st grammy] or “Don’t You Know”, (feat. J. Collier), a love song in 14/4.
It's very rare but Snarky Puppy are one of those bands that get you hooked to the music the very first time you listen to them. I tell everyone to check them out. Amazing group of TOP Drawer musicians. Just so damn good.
Their skills are so above my comprehension levels that I have to listen to this in sections! Cory Henry is not of this planet! Neither is the drummer! They're communicating on some cosmic levels that are beyond us mere mortals! My brain is fried!
I'd also add the live version of "Grown Folks" to that. Once Mark Lettieri (Guitar) and Bobby Sparks (Hammond Organ) start jamming on the solo its something else... th-cam.com/video/npQO85vb00g/w-d-xo.html
This was their recording session. It was the first time they'd played the entire song together, I think. A lot of it, including Corey Henry's solo and probably all of Larnell Lewis' drumming, was improv with a little solo prep.
@@beaulayer23 I do know Michael requires that every musician knows ALL the musicians parts and I do find that brilliant. If the keyboard soloist is out- no worries. The sax can do it. Etc. SEEMLESSLY
Larnell is filling in for another guy on short notice(It's reported as being a 24 hour notice). He learned the songs on the flight from the US to Netherlands. He is a monster. Now, be honest with us...how many times have you watched this since you reacted? :-)
@@PatrolNation LOL!! It has that effect, doesn't it? :-) I've lost track of how many times I've watched it, and I have no intention of stopping. Glad you enjoyed it, it's good stuff!
His video of him listening to Enter Sandman by Metallic for the first time is great. Never heard it before, listen to it and then played the drums along with the song and it was like it was supposed to be in there. That would be a good video to watch too
Great reaction. Love that you were left speechless at the end, just like most people who watch it. Amazing, amazing performance from an astounding group of talented musicians.
I'm not sure how far you dug in to this. But to put things in perspective, Most of the band learned the song in three days. Larnell learned the songs on a plane in 24 hours.!!!!! Madness. Actual virtuoso level shit.
Once in a liftime you can hear one masterpiece like this... Such a amazing and unexpectedly good music, and the n you ask yourself (after coming back to reality...) How? How could it be that i never heard about such genius musicans...How? But then you found more beautiful music from snarky puppy and said:"Thx God for this bonus material!" Everybody (!) mean each of them is amazing but there is (for me) some kind of music goodness names Larnell! Nice to see that you had the same kind of reacton to first time hearing as I...
You think you're amazed now, what the documentary of the making of this album. It's only about 25 minutes, but it will blow you away at how they put that together. BTW alway love your reactions.

I've suscribed to your channel, bro. Your reaction is PRICELESS!!!! Straight up honest and full of your heart for music. As for Snarky Puppy's "Lingus", it's one of the most important and impactful peices of music I've EVER heard. I would only hope that you'd do some more on them. Separately, I'd like to see more of your reaction to Corey Henry, Michael League and Larnell Lewis. And, I'll definitely be watch THIS video a few more times!!!!
Literally hundreds of reaction videos to Snarky Puppy and they are all the same reaction. The thing I love about it is that they don't think they are all that, they just want to have fun playing music.
Yeah Scott that is so true. Michael League wrote that tune on the plane ride to Europe. I think he was flying Lingus airlines, so he named it Lingus. I bet Mike is like, "gee, glad you liked it, no big deal". And yet here are literally hundreds of reactions to Lingus and the effect is the same - "WTF did I just watch? Amazing,. . . incredible". The guy is prolific
These guys are going to keep that genre alive for a long long time. they're all still pretty young and they're gonna be around to make a lot of changes too. It's just excellent stuff
The new thing is guitarists trying to duplicate Cory’s solo and some have done a really amazing job at duplicating it however, what really makes that solo sing for me is what he does with his LEFT hand, and that’s the part they can never do…..
You have to watch the video and reactions to it multiple times in order to wrap your head around it . Once you get it nestled in the folds of your brain, you can actually start deconstruction and paying attention to the different elements. Almost all of the reactions to this tune is laced with "ummm"'s, and "uhhhh"'s and wow's. Well that's what happens when a band goes transdimensional on you. It took me three listens to realize that the song is in 5/4 timing shifting to double time.
La clave 2/4 bomba two bars & two bars 3-2 rumba clave.... simple....!! Makes it change the cadence ......but they're pushing constantly the tempo to make it akward

He's Canadian and travelled from Canada - but yes - absolutely astonishing feat!

I love how the one keyboard 🎹 player got up and was like “I’m Out” just watchin the young man play
plus that's multiple Grammy winning artist Shaun Martin, and he was legitimately as blown away by Corey's solo as we all were.
Want to see Larnell Lewis in action? Listen to “What about me” NEXT!!
A couple of points I haven’t yet seen in the comments.

Top level musicians here. The whole album/video is incredible.
Agreed!
@Patrol Gaming: Much Respect for the way you reacted during the song ... ie; MINIMAL REACTION THAT DIDN'T ENTIRELY INTERRUP THE FLOW!!!
The bass player Michael League is also the bandleader, and composed this piece.
It's very rare but Snarky Puppy are one of those bands that get you hooked to the music the very first time you listen to them. I tell everyone to check them out. Amazing group of TOP Drawer musicians. Just so damn good.
They all play at a very high level. They all have chops, they all know how to improvise, they all know how to groove.
Yeah man! Jazz, funk, fusion, blues, rock, it's all in there. Micael League and his army of badass musicians!
This whole song AND album is one GIGANTIC EARGASM.
My suggestion is to just fall all the way down the Snarky Puppy rabbit hole. They are all monsters.
Their skills are so above my comprehension levels that I have to listen to this in sections! Cory Henry is not of this planet! Neither is the drummer! They're communicating on some cosmic levels that are beyond us mere mortals! My brain is fried!
The boundaries of music just expanded ... immensely.

There is one long shot of the control room and you can see how much they are enjoying it too. A special moment when the band is just perfection.
This was their recording session. It was the first time they'd played the entire song together, I think. A lot of it, including Corey Henry's solo and probably all of Larnell Lewis' drumming, was improv with a little solo prep.
It was all 'written' in basic song form, bars, a/b sections, solos, etc. and the musicians were given pretty free reign within that
