It's been a while since I watched your content. But this is one of the most interesting TW runs I've ever seen personally. Also, your Three Kingdoms Lore videos should 100% be sold somewhere. You do gods work and make a clouded part of history accessible to western people like me :D Thank you for everything
It is not clouded, the Three Kingdoms era is one of the most well knowne periods to most Chinese, excluding the preponderance of Communist China on the ills of the Qing....and the achievements of Mao....
Honestly Shi Xie was the absolute perfect character for me in TK in the few runs I've done, because I tend to find a corner and turtle while I build myself up enough to start a rapid expansion against AI factions that have had a significant amount of time to expand and build up. It means I run into some interesting situations to fight through late game, and some desperate defenses midgame when you're not strong enough to invade those growing factions but they've randomly declared war on you. Shi Xie is perfectly built for that playstyle because the only nearby powers that are a real threat are the Southern Tribes, and you can pretty freely expand along the coast and build up your economy. By being really aggressive you can eventually grab Jianye and build up the most profitable city in the game as well. Basically, Shi Xie is boring and tedious compared to most campaigns, but set up pretty well for a long term tall game, with a likely huge fight against a massive Sun Ce later on.
Heavy disagree on him being the worst faction. Sure he has no unit or buildings, but he has two things that make his campaign quite good. 1: The Tribute chest mechanic is quite interesting, flexible and it gives him a family member vassal playstyle which is pretty unique. 2: His start position. Most of the factions are around the central plains.The closest faction to Shi Xie in 190 is Sun Jian in Changsha. You get to fight Nanman, you get to fight Han, you get Spice and a corner of China you will usually be only reaching in the late game. Its also why I love Liu Yan as a campaign. Starting in these barren regions is always refreshing after a Central Plains/Northern China brawl. 3: Shi Xie will often live to the end of the campaign if you play reasonably fast and he has a few unique quirks like his item sets that make him quite interesting and powerful. Meanwhile Tao Qian exists 1: He has unique units,but they are so bad they might as well not exist. 2: Displaced pop is alright as a mechanic but nowhere near as interesting as the Tribute Chests nor as powerful. 3: He starts in the central plains, between Cao Cao and Liu Bei. Why on earth would you play as Tao Qian when you can play as basically one of the two most up to date factions in the game (Cao Cao) and the dated but still quite charming Liu Bei campaign. If you play as Liu Bei in 194 you are just better Tao Qian, if you play with him in 190 you will usually get his lands for free in the first 30 turns. 4:Tao Qian while quite good doesn't have the old age flag and starts at 60. He will usually die in the first 50 turns. From there you are playing 194 Liu Bei without Liu Bei and company. There is absolutely nothing unique about Tao Qian's campaign. He is redundant. While Shi Xie did have the potential to be a top tier FLC, if he had just gotten units and a building, but he is still very much a nice addition to the game and can offer some variety when tired of playing the big boys.
Zhang Lu or Han Sui would have been much better FLC factions for the game, to expand your options in the Northwest. And for Han Sui they could have copy pasted Ma Teng's units and given him a new mechanic and he would have been a perfectly good campaign.

I love Shi Xie, one of my favorite factions to play! - I like to give my administrators the economists chest then you have bonus income and public order even with super high taxes everywhere
Hi Trivia, good to see you back in Three Kingdoms! Little recommendation: theres a mod which allowes you to play as Li Yue in "A world betrayed", is a really hard campaing which get even harder between the turns 5 to 10 due to an unescripted event regarding the faction. I recommend you to try it and see if you can get pass turn 15, I think it would be REALLY good for the channel as a SHORT series (really, its really difficult)
Shi Xie with Radious mod is absolutely a game changer. It is much more interesting and adds Yue units, which are indigenous Vietic people who nowadays have mixed with Han people to form a Vietnamese culture.
I did a playthrough with that boring faction before--I abandoned his homeland, went after all major factions by sacking and stealing most of their lands and then sold them all to nearby minor factions for shits and giggles. Cao Cao was down to a single farm, Sun Jian a port if I remember, Liu Bei a lumberjack village and Yuan Shao a single farm.

I once play Shi Xe at 190. I wiped out all nanmans, get Mulu elephant what is perfect for general with 3 passives. But I end campaign when Shi Xe dies.
welcome back to 3k games again! i been playing d4 lately ever since the release, now season 1. My wife plays d4 too, we spent $3100 for our MsI 4070 ti desktop and MSI rtk 4060 laptop for d4, but it totally works for total war three kingdoms too.
I'm sure you're not looking for more house rules atm, but, I've often thought using AI Commanders mod and then only directly controlling the generals, or maybe one general and his retinue, would be an interesting challenge. One of these days I'm gonna try it myself and see how far I can get
not the worst, the easiest to play - just focus on nanman lands with fire arrows, rest of the Han will leave you alone and you can build up a monster of a position for extending north or east at your leisure. When this came out, it was one of the shortest campaigns I ever played, super easy.
people seem to misunderstand worst with most difficult for some reason...it is the worst in terms of being the most unpolished faction with no unique units, no unique buildings, no objectives or missions
@@SeriousTrivia ah ok understood, that's words for you though, can mean different things, that's why we comment and can clear it up :). I remember you mentioning this not having any missions etc., but personally I haven't bothered with any missions at all since the start so it's a mute point to me at least. Not having any unique units or buildings I don't mind either - I treat it as a purely default faction and it's actually nice to play something like this here and there, play it as vanilla as possible. And instead of extra unique heroes he gets a really large family roster, so you know you'll never run short on characters even without recruiting. Also he has the chests so it's not nothing there either and some are pretty good/usefull, while at same time can be completely ignored, which is again, quite nice and relaxing. Just my two cents :)
I havent been good at this game . So I went on chatgpt and made it make decisions for as if if I was liu bei who is following the art of of war. Did better than I usually do . I like the history it gives me when it makes choices such as chancellor etc
In the list of everything that doesn't reflect well for CAs QC is basically everything ceo related. Between the Nanmans all basically liking each-others with their background (career) bonus and the Shi... debatable bonuses. But yay for +0 Charge bonus. Oh and just +15 Expertise which is as much as basically any random individual with a random career. Yup yup.
Nothing wrong with these house rules. Better faction (which really is the worst) for them would be Liu Biao. Similar house rules: records mode, no artillery. Even better with no abusing of towers. Military supplies, reserves and ranged block chance on general's armor actually matter. Try it ;)
Would you ever consider playing Rewan's SICO mod? It overhauls the campaign to be more balanced. I'd highly recommend it despite its lack of subscribers. I think you'd really like its approach to balancing. He was in your tournament as Vermilion Bird
I know this game is basically abandonware now but did it end up being any good? I bought it, played it for maybe half an hour, never touched it again. I put a lot of hours into games like Civ 6, TW Warhammer 1-3, Fall of the Samurai/Shogun 2, Football Manager (easily 10k+ hrs into these games combined). To be fair it got more screen time for me than Thrones of Britannia. But that's not hard. For me Fall of the Samurai is the best historical there has been for Total War. It wasn't perfect, but it was brutal and fun, it gave you the feeling of the grind of war. Warhammer is basically click click click, do some spells, easy game. Total Wars other than S2/Fots for me have been too flawed, embarrassments on release.
by far better than Shogun 2/FotS. ending support for the game does not mean it was left in a bad state. It just means they promised a bunch of DLC and didn't give it.
you know, something i've always wondered is, as a Nanmam, you want to keep certain Han buildings, and as the Han, you want to keep the Yellow Turban Forge, but if you're playing as a Han faction, are there any Nanman buildings that are vital to keep if you take Nanman land?
@@SeriousTrivia kong rong achieved something... by the standards of the novel, descendant of confucious, the whole taishi ci saga (not much but it meant something towards the morals the novel was trying to preach) and then him despite knowing he'd likely be executed, but still calling out cao cao... to the shi xie "saga" of merely existing
By the standard of the novel, Kong Rong achieved losing Beihai to yellow turbans, losing it again to Yuan Tan. Then getting executed by Cao Cao. How is that worthy of a playable faction. At Kong Rong’s peak, he was in charge of one princedom equivalent to a commandery. Shi Xie ruled a province for multiple decades. His son was actually involved in a military conflict against Wu even though it ended badly for them. This is not even considering actual historical impact. If you want to go by how things are framed in the novel, Liu Chong is never even mentioned in the novel and historically he only shows up as a prince who defended his princedom against yellow turbans and then gets assassinated yet CA turned him into a half of an DLC feature with two overtuned unique units, unique faction resource, and a trophy case mechanic on top of that…you can’t argue he is more deserving than Shi Xie…
@@SeriousTrivia name one thing shi xie did... other than exist? i wasnt saying that kong rong did actually anything other than die and espouse Confucian virtues, but... still more than shi xie, who literally governed his province from one suzerain to another... he accomplished absolutely nothing and any child could have achieved what he managed to achieve. literally filler character of all time
His son is a living example of how not a child can do what he did. Ruling a frontier area with a high level of foreign culture citizens is not an easy thing. He took over when the Han was looking for anyone willing to take care of the mess in the south. You make it sound like any capable ruler able to maintain peace in their land is incapable because there was peace and that someone who couldn’t calm the local population such as the yellow turban remnants in beihai and then fought basically his own citizens and then lost is more capable. Look at the historical period at the end of the Qin of how the Jiao province rebelled and how many times the Jiao province had rebellions during direct Wu control and Jin control and you might come to appreciate what Shi Xie did. I am not arguing if he is a great warlord during this historical time period but I am arguing that if we are going by merits to determine faction quality, Shi Xie does not deserve to be on the bottom of the list. Playable factions like Kong Rong, Yan Baihu, Zheng Jiang, Liu Chong are all much less deserving. Zheng Jiang is basically a gender diversity fictional creation. Liu Chong is a historical footnote turned superchad. Kong Rong is a stubborn bookworm that would not even have been just a name like Bian Rang or Yang Xiu had he not been related to Confucius, and Yan Baihu is basically the leader of a group of anarchist who doesn’t want to pay taxes who at the first sight of Sun Ce tried to surrender but was turned down and then hunted down like dogs. Shi Xie at worst is a better version of Liu Zhang as he not only kept his province in harmony, he also didn’t lose it and was respected enough by both his own people and other powers around him to not get attacked while he was alive. Meanwhile Liu Zhang was the butt of everyone’s joke and lost control of his own vassal Zhang Lu only to invite Liu Bei in to take his land. It’s not even a close argument.
without mods with me he always dies a couple to a few turns in, so I just make everyone live longer, if I was not dumb with mods I'd make one specifically for only him since he did miraculously live into his 90's
Go get the mod that unlocks all factions, then try playing as the Han Empire. Not Liu Hong, the Han Empire. There's no real end goal, but it can be fun.
Is there a mod that adds all the unique portraits but not any items/abilities/etc. ? (not suggesting to change the house rule, I am asking for my own playthrough).
Hopefully that means we'll have more marriages and actually offsprings being born into the faction. I am getting tired of all the marriage baiting. I like to see long lasting marriages.
not sure about the long term gameplan, but this seems like a good way to start no matter the starting year. Keep it all in the family, get a marriage for the boys asap and move on from there.
Not in the whole of the commandery, but if the capitol of the Commandery is under attack they will be there with whatever units they had when you gave them the position (I do play it modded idk if it's the same in Vanilla)
Then again maybe they should've rewritten the entire engine. Because you know, if we use the original register as used by Luo Guanzhong, it would've been a combination of CK3 AND TW. Not that it matters that someone created an app that allows you to fight battles generated in CK3, using Total War: Attilla. Maybe, just maybe, CA should team up with Paradox. Just sayin'.

This is actually perfect campaign because it teaches you to play Vanilla.

His son is a living example of how not a child can do what he did. Ruling a frontier area with a high level of foreign culture citizens is not an easy thing. He took over when the Han was looking for anyone willing to take care of the mess in the south. You make it sound like any capable ruler able to maintain peace in their land is incapable because there was peace and that someone who couldn’t calm the local population such as the yellow turban remnants in beihai and then fought basically his own citizens and then lost is more capable. Look at the historical period at the end of the Qin of how the Jiao province rebelled and how many times the Jiao province had rebellions during direct Wu control and Jin control and you might come to appreciate what Shi Xie did. I am not arguing if he is a great warlord during this historical time period but I am arguing that if we are going by merits to determine faction quality, Shi Xie does not deserve to be on the bottom of the list. Playable factions like Kong Rong, Yan Baihu, Zheng Jiang, Liu Chong are all much less deserving. Zheng Jiang is basically a gender diversity fictional creation. Liu Chong is a historical footnote turned superchad. Kong Rong is a stubborn bookworm that would not even have been just a name like Bian Rang or Yang Xiu had he not been related to Confucius, and Yan Baihu is basically the leader of a group of anarchist who doesn’t want to pay taxes who at the first sight of Sun Ce tried to surrender but was turned down and then hunted down like dogs. Shi Xie at worst is a better version of Liu Zhang as he not only kept his province in harmony, he also didn’t lose it and was respected enough by both his own people and other powers around him to not get attacked while he was alive. Meanwhile Liu Zhang was the butt of everyone’s joke and lost control of his own vassal Zhang Lu only to invite Liu Bei in to take his land. It’s not even a close argument.

without mods with me he always dies a couple to a few turns in, so I just make everyone live longer, if I was not dumb with mods I'd make one specifically for only him since he did miraculously live into his 90's
Go get the mod that unlocks all factions, then try playing as the Han Empire. Not Liu Hong, the Han Empire. There's no real end goal, but it can be fun.

don't really have a favorite but Sun Ce and Cao Cao comes to mind
Hopefully that means we'll have more marriages and actually offsprings being born into the faction. I am getting tired of all the marriage baiting. I like to see long lasting marriages.

not sure about the long term gameplan, but this seems like a good way to start no matter the starting year. Keep it all in the family, get a marriage for the boys asap and move on from there.

Not in the whole of the commandery, but if the capitol of the Commandery is under attack they will be there with whatever units they had when you gave them the position (I do play it modded idk if it's the same in Vanilla)
TW was a bad format for Sam Kok - Imperator / CK would've been better.
Then again maybe they should've rewritten the entire engine. Because you know, if we use the original register as used by Luo Guanzhong, it would've been a combination of CK3 AND TW.
Not that it matters that someone created an app that allows you to fight battles generated in CK3, using Total War: Attilla.
