If I had to give a review on the character of the saloons in RDR2 it would go like this: Smithfield's Saloon: Typical ideal Wild West saloon as seen on TV and movies. The nicest drinking establishment in town with something for everyone. Try the Beef Stew and don't ask what Lamb’s Fry is. Keane's Saloon: Your typical rundown shack of a saloon. When boom towns sprung up one of the first buildings was typically a shack of a saloon. Keane's in such a building. Doyle's Tavern: Typical lower rung bar found in major cities of the time. But knowing how history goes this bar will probably be a tourist stop in the modern era having somehow survived everything. In the modern version of this bar expect craft beer, expensive whiskey, and a extensive t-shirt selection. Locals avoid this place. Bastille Saloon: Wealthy establishment would probably survive into the modern era but maybe not. Very Art Nouveau and modern for its time. This place really shows off the peak of the Gilded Age. Have the Prime Rib, and thank me later. Rhodes Parlour House: Has that old south look, feel, and charm. A fine establishment if your white. Otherwise you wouldn't be in there. This is where the well to do hangout when they come into town, or a visitor from a train. Old Light Saloon: Very American Colonial in look and feel. The low ceiling, and stone walls make this place feel like stepping back in time to the early 1800s or perhaps the 1700s. Places like this the American Revolution was plotted. Given how the rail has bypassed this town, the location is on the skids. Not that being a river port town helped it. The people who frequent this place are probably river pirates, and drifters. Blackwater Saloon: Nice clean saloon. Very modern and with its mind looking forward to the 20th century. Not much to say beyond that. Armadillo Saloon: Typical Western Movie saloon set in the desert. Like Smithfields but in the desert. In RDR2 you wouldn't want to go here. In RDR1 you probably still wouldn't want to go there. But if you're looking for that classic western desert saloon. Except no substitutes. Tumbleweed Saloon: Slightly rundown, on the skids given how the railroad is going to bypass and kill this town. Shares a lot with Armadillo Saloon, just not full of death.
Literally NOOOOOObody gives a single flyin fu** what some random nerds breakdown of saloons, what the hell are you doing with your life? You really sat there THAT long to type ALL THAT shit that NOBODY cares about?! 😂 Lawd
Van horn in general is the best for a good ol shoot out. I find myself playing the game and exploring the woods and then decide. Let me save my game really quick and cause havoc in van horn lol
I wish the Colter hideout from chapter 1 was developed as a town as the story went along. I also wish there were some Army forts that doubled as towns like Fort Sumner in New Mexico and Fort Griffin Texas. A town with a millitary presence would have been interesting.
I wish there was a mod that did both things you said, and remade Limpany or whatever it’s called, but I feel like that would be way to complicated for the average modders to do
Random question but was Fort Worth and Fort Lauderdale army bases in their day before becoming towns or do they just have “fort” in their names for other reasons?
@@Vormir_itself it's kind of odd that Ambrino called a state when really by 1800s laws it more of a territory since it lacks both infrastructure and population.
I got to say one thing in defence of Keane's Saloon though, is that's it's supposed to live in the shadow of the newer and bigger Smithfield's Saloon. The barman and owner, Ned Keane, will often complain and compare the two saloons, and reminisce about the old days his saloon used to be the only one in town and be packed every night. If you look around you can find plenty of bullet holes in the walls, a hint that Valentine used to be a lot wilder in it's younger days, before the game's setting. Another hint of the Old West dying. Do I disagree it's place on the list though? Not at all. It's only a saloon I enjoy visiting because Ned seems a lot more personal compared other barkeeps. Rather go to Smithfield's where all the games and life is.
@@filmsbyhen Although I've also rather seen some life in Armadillo, I actually get why it's hit by Cholera. It gives another feeling of the pure Wild West, the Del Lobo's terrorise the town with impunity, and together with the dust storms the town feels really at home in one of the doomiest of Spaghetti Westerns. It also gives some narrative to RDR1's Marshall Leigh Johnson, that without him this town would become a hellhole, and we can see it now with our own eyes. Next to that, it makes Tumbleweed, a town that can fight off the hordes of Del Lobo's, cut off and extremely distant from civilisation.
There is a 10th saloon (kind of) In Emerald ranch there is an enterable building which has the interior of a saloon, however whilst the doors are never locked the saloon never has anyone inside and you cannot order drinks at the bar, play poker or book a room. In fact other than a couple of collectibles the saloon is closed. It would definitely number 10 if it were on the list.
I remember having a few encounters and they talked about how there was a shootout in the saloon and the guy that owns emerald ranch closed it down because of it.
Theres also a saloon in limpany but since no one talks about limpany like ever except in online and since it is burnt down i can see why it is not included
The foods in the Saloons echoing the region. Yes thats my favorite too, hate that its not on online but whatever. Like Van Horn having the fish stew, Blackwater having the roast prairie chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy/green beans, or Saint Denis with the lobster bisque. Love you mentioned it
Yeah definitely. But for it to work, it would be required more of a canteen-tavern-inn kind of vibe. Where food, drink and lounging would be its main thing, for travelers and such. No particular mini games, maybe finger fillet or dominoes at best but a solid place to hang around while exploring the grizzlies. I love videos like this that explore spaces within video games. Stuff like this is what makes those old games of our childhood so surreal and nostalgic. Dope video B)
I actually really like Keane’s because it reminds me of how Saloons used to be when the land was basically completely unsettled. If you read a description of what the saloons looked like in “Blood Meridian”, it basically seems really makeshift like Keane’s.
I was really hoping armadillo and tumbleweed would livelier and have more to do. When I play RDR I rarely visit new Austin because of how lack luster the towns are. I remember going to the van horn saloon and accidentally bumped into an npc, he got mad and wanted to challenge me to a duel, I decided to spare him by shooting the gun from his hand and out of nowhere the entire gang started shooting at me, it felt like the most old west saloon with the saltiest outlaws lol.
I had a “random” encounter at Doyle’s. A girl from the fights in st denis(end game). This game has so much life it’s crazy how much things effect the world
I agree on your list! The way I do it far as my characters are concerned with story mode I love having Arthur and John in a saloon that best matches their age and personality like Arthur is definitely the Smithfield saloon guy and maybe the one in tumbleweed whereas John is Smithfield’s and the one in blackwater! But for my rdo character (when I used to play lol) is the fancy saloon in Saint Denis cause my character is modeled off someone that is in the mafia in Saint Denis so it just feels more appropriate that would be his go to saloon choice
Ha I made my RDO guy a native (modeled after Lou Diamond Phillips from Longmire) and once they did the capitaylay update I found pairing him with a short tied back hair, a big ole mustache and black w some white suit and black tribly made him look like such a SD Mafia goon! I will go clean shaven, no shirt and long hair when in Native mode, but change over when I feel like being mafioso! Godo call man
Tumbleweed’s saloon is the quintessential Wild West saloon and is thus the best in the game. I also love the detail where if you go into the saloon at night, there’s a humid and foggy sheen to the place, really adds to the atmosphere
Their is actually in additional saloon which you can enter but can't use at one of those farms towns don't remember what it is exactly but it has a sign saying saloon you can enter it l. It's dinghy has a Bar but you can't drink or eat. maybe emeralds ranch? Edit (definitely emerald ranch) only one of the two doors front doors work)
The amount of fights I've nearly started in Blackwater's saloon. I will just keep messing with the patrons in there, until I've basically driven them insane and they leave.
I would of swapped around 7 and 8.. idk I like the dingy saint Denis saloon more then valentine's.. it gives me more of a small pub vibe (especially with all the decorations behind the bar) where you got one guy sitting behind a counter giving you drinks.. what else do you really need
It's a really good video, you made me enjoy the saloons in this game for their details! 😁 You're really good at making this content and will continue to support you!
In my opinion I like the tumbleweed salon the most because it’s in a small remote western town and the saloon itself feels like a classic western saloon
Loving your RDR videos, man! The narration is fun and the commentary itself is very well done. The only minor nitpick that I have - I wouldn't use The Ecstasy of Gold as a backround music. Don't get me wrong, it's definetely one of my favorite pieces of film score ever, but it's just too epic and grandiose to be used as a backround music! That's why there was no dialogue over it in the movie. Anyway, I'll go check out your other vids, maybe you've stopped using this theme already😆
I like how in the first red dead redemption, you get to see Armadillo in it's heyday... similar to the Tumbleweed saloon, Armadillo's poker table is in a private back room.
I was similar with a couple exceptions. I had Tumbleweed at 8 as Im never there. I had utility listed as a factor inmy rankings. By the time you get there to Tumble weed you are John and he doesnt have a lot of reasons to be way out there. Its also really tiny in there. Blackjack . Poker for sure so that is a plus and the rustic feel is great; Im just never finding myself there. Blackwater is similar (I had it at 4) and it just feels like a lot less going on than it could have. The Blackjack is, again, a plus, and it looks higher end for era yet still a saloon but I dont find myself heading there ever. There is a distinction between Arthur and John as is relates to saloons for me. Arthur has the gang with the camps, activity there including poker, camaraderie, stories, dialogues and events. There is so much always going on that you can get out to a saloon to be away from it and be the gunslinger in the saloon. John, well John is always alone or quiet. Even later with Beechers Hope built up the family doesn't offer much, not like the gang did. That said when I go to saloons as John, I find myself nostalgic, and go back to the ones I spent time in as Arthur. Other difference is as of my now 6th playthrough I find myself down in Rhodes area all the time. Early in Ch 2 Im there for the fence and gambler challenges. So many times I am done with something and the best place to go is Rhodes. Its grown on me.
My favourite is Smithfields, the overall feel and atmosphere just brings me to a time I long for. Too sick to type much more, but I love thst place. Lennnnny!
Blackwater is best for throwing people out the big windows or throwing dynamite in the big windows. In Red Dead 1 the drunk mechanic let you stumble through the windows and it was hilarious 😆
This dude literally read my mind right up until 1&2. I would only just put Blackwater over Smithfield's because it has both card games. Other than that I completely agree with this ranking.
I love the bastille saloon in Saint Denis it looks so nice especially at night and the meals look so good Edit: Anytime i stop in at valentine i go to the Smithfield’s for the pickled eggs
I love and hate Van Horn for the same reason, and it’s that everyone there really wants to get in a fight. If you wanna get stuff done and relax than it’s frustrating for an entire town to draw revolvers on you but when you’re itching for a fight it’s super easy to antagonize a guy that started it and beat him up.
I tend to hang around Rhodes and St. Denis, but when I go to the Saloons in St. Denis I always go to the one deeper into town in the factory area. Idk why, I just like the roughness of it compared to the bigger one.
Damnn bro you shoulda transitioned the number screen to you walking around Smithfield’s since it’s at the end of the list anyway, that shii woulda been cold
my favorite small detail in the posh saint denis saloon is the poker game has a higher stakes buy-in, and the whiskey costs 50 cents extra. very small detail but adds a lot to the higher class place they're trying to portray
anotha great vid. I would say you ranked tumbleweed maybe a bit too high, I feel that since theres only one guy with a gun that isn't the bartender or a deputy (i see him at the top of the stairs indoor), and its hard to mess with him without getting wanted, i do get bored of it quicker. However, walking into tumbleweed acting like clint eastwood is always fun. Blackwater one is great due to the fact it has the highest buy ins for any game (tied with saint denis). As well as the establishment looks great.

Hey! No disrespecting oatmeal on my watch!
Loved the video partner
Yes, A bit of a miss there with Armadillo.
Story and online could/should have been diffrent.
"I hope you wake up tomorrow" is such a German lullaby sentence
"Morgen Früh wenn Gott will" indeed
glad i stumbled on this channel. subbing for sure for this great rdr2 content
Van Horne: toss dynamite in the blackjack room, hide behind the bar, pick off the citizens as they come in the doors.
You describe everything so brilliantly.
The thing i like about the st denis saloon is that upstairs next to the hotel rooms there is a pristitute that you can kill with no penalty
not even worse honor?
@Grayson-tk5hn Ok sure honor loss but you don't get wanted at all
@@jackmarston1899 i see i might do this then
I adore the van horn saloon. I have no idea why but its just a vibe to me. Full of life too at night
keanes is burger king and smithfield is mcdonalds
7:50 knocked him out coolddd
Tripadvisor for red dead redemption 2. Great content man XD
Tumbleweed Piano player plays the “ Bringing home a baby bumblebee” song. Automatically making it the best saloon!
There’s nothing better than getting into a fight in Valentine and throwing your victim out the window.
The way he put emphasis on lambs heart lol: For something called LAMBS HEART it actually looks pretty damn good😂
valentine saloon gets an extra boost because of a quiet time, it's the perfect setting for the perfect mission
My grandpa walked in on me playing red dead during a cutscene and legit thought it was a movie
9:45 your honor is so low, wow!
Great channel man keep it up
This dude literally read my mind right up until 1&2. I would only just put Blackwater over Smithfield's because it has both card games. Other than that I completely agree with this ranking.
I love the bastille saloon in Saint Denis it looks so nice especially at night and the meals look so good
Edit: Anytime i stop in at valentine i go to the Smithfield’s for the pickled eggs
9:35 see we're going super HIGH honor on this play thru.. haha
Love your work mate
I love and hate Van Horn for the same reason, and it’s that everyone there really wants to get in a fight. If you wanna get stuff done and relax than it’s frustrating for an entire town to draw revolvers on you but when you’re itching for a fight it’s super easy to antagonize a guy that started it and beat him up.
I remember accidentally punching a woman in the van horn saloon and a dude jumped in to fight me…and another jumped in…and another…and another
i always get shot to death there. something i must do wrong?
I tend to hang around Rhodes and St. Denis, but when I go to the Saloons in St. Denis I always go to the one deeper into town in the factory area. Idk why, I just like the roughness of it compared to the bigger one.
i once brought a lemoyne raider corpse in the rhode parlour house...the reaction where quite...special.
Armadillo’s saloon reminds me a bunch of freedmen’s gluch saloon Buster Scruggs walks into, maybe they got inspired by rdr1’s armadillo saloon.
Doyle’s tavern should be at number 1 for the simple fact you meet Charles Châteney there
Damnn bro you shoulda transitioned the number screen to you walking around Smithfield’s since it’s at the end of the list anyway, that shii woulda been cold
The Valentine Saloon holds a special place in my heart.
The bar keep in vanhorn is also the only shop in the entire game we’re the worker will actually pull a gun on you if you pull a gun on them
you can also throw people out the window of the valentine saloon which you can’t do at any other saloon in the game
I threw someone out the window at the Rhodes Parlour house.

Holy crap, they call me trinity at the beginning. I loved that movie. It also got me into the Wild West
My favorite is the blackwater saloon. Best place to sit down and enjoy a game of poker. Also it’s the most modern and familiar.
my favorite small detail in the posh saint denis saloon is the poker game has a higher stakes buy-in, and the whiskey costs 50 cents extra. very small detail but adds a lot to the higher class place they're trying to portray
valentine saloon has gotta be the best saloon in rd2.
Arthur is the most violent door opener of all time. I usually break a window opening doors
Doyle's saloon actually has a card game its the table in the backroom with the piano but you don't see it often.
A vid idea: What about an RDR2 ranking video of all the shopkeepers in the game (referring to all types of businesses)?
Love how you seem to put Extasy of Gold as the background music in all of these video's
Cool Mention of the Van Horn bartender, I think she is the only Female NPC you can fist fight or in general attacks you if provoked.
You should do a video ranking all the rdr2 Sheriffs
The valentine saloon was so great in RDR1; It’s like the perfect old western saloon. It’s kinda heartbreaking to see the state it’s in in RDR2.
You mean Armadillo?
anotha great vid.
