  • If you are interested in raising and hatching apple snail clutches, getting a good yield is important! In my opinion, incubating is the way to go!

      My hobby turned into an obsession is ball pythons currently. I have 8, 1 of them adopted from a family driving through town in an RV that got a flat. LoL! It's been crazy fun to learn everything I can. I grew up with fish in the house as a kid, kind of miss having a tank. So watching you with your business, really helps with the lack of a tank of my own.

    I've seen apple snail love...Oh boy ...in my thank :P ... And I've had the opportunity of actually growing out baby apple snails, and incubated them, similar to your method. I had 100's of them hatch of just one clutch! Later, they grew to about the size of a large marble. They do grow fast! So, I had to donate them to my LFS because I didn't have the room :) The few that I kept are now happy in my tank and still growing.

    I had a small clutch hatch today, suddenly, within an hour or so. The adults were below the clutch as they hatched. Do the adults eat the babies as they hatch? 😢 I saw a few tiny babies, smaller than I was expecting, all with a white transparent shell and a darker button in the middle of the whorl. Is that usual? My snails aren't that color (gold, or brown, or purple, or magenta) so I am looking forward to seeing what color they are.

    Rachel I have 8 clutches and maybe 6 before that. I am using a wet paper towel in a plastic container. I didn't punch holes and I just let the lid sit on the top kinda turned so the air can get in. I only have about 20 snails that have hatched. So many clutches...hundreds of eggs.
    What am I doing wrong? They sit there and after a couple days leak out yellow fluid and stain the wet paper towel. They looked dry on top so I dribbled water over them maybe 2-3 times in a week

    Was this a viable clutch? Or have you hatched any since? Tbh, i've never owned any snails because i'm always scared of having a snail overload. In my planted tanks I've always used tissue cultured plants or the ones that say pest free because of my fear. I know that sounds ridiculous esepcially with certain species that don't reproduce so fast and not having a constant food source for them to reproduce so quickly. One of my friends had a huge "pest" snail problem in his planted tank because of his over feeding. Lately, i've been wanting to set up another planted tank and this type of snail would be great since it doesn't eat healthy plants and I can just remove clutches I don't necessarily want.

    my golden mystery snail just laid a clutch at the top of my aquarium and I'm trying to figure out the best way to hatch and take care of them. So now when you say apple snail, do you actually mean the apple snails we catch in ponds and lakes here on the east coast that are always dark colored (either dark brown or black never saw a different color than that in the wild) and grow to actually be the size of a small apple 🍎 or are you talking about the mystery snails (cause I know alot of people also call them apple snails)? I'm just wondering because I don't want this to be specifically for one type of snail and I kill the whole clutch by doing trying it with my mystery snail eggs.

  • @jetjazz05
    @jetjazz05 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Trick I picked up from Cory from aquarium co-op, tums. At first I didn't think it was doing anything, but once my snails figured out what it was they would eat about 1/16 to 1/8 of a tum per day for about a week. I have 3 so I'd just put in a 1/4 of one which was enough for a day or two, but I'd wait a day or two then put in a new piece... holy cow. The snails have doubled in size in 1 month, from about 3/4 of an inch to almost 2, and they've just laid eggs (why I looked up this video). You put tums in for the babies they'll have the nicest smoothest shells and they'll be huge in just a few months.

    Hi Rachel,
    I hope you can help me. I bought a new magenta apple snail from ebay. It's so soooo tiny, like 1/2 the size of a very small pea. They told me to go ahead and put her in my 10gl tank. But Now I can't even find her. How do I know if she's eating? If I find her should I put her in a smaller container?

      I lost seeing my zebra snail.
      Was cleaning my aquarium and found it hiding behind the filter. Zebra snails are very tiny and stay small.

    If I wanted to breed mystery snails could I do it in a ten gallon? If so how many would I want to start off with... also just a off topic question but would they eat lettuce if submerged? Thank you- Fish in the corner

    Hi Rachel,
    is there any special tips on asolene spixi eggs?
    Noticed my first clutch today and have never had it happen before so any advice is much appreciated. :)

      those I leave where they lie, as they are underwater. The yield of young is not as high with those. You could put them in a floating box, as availability to food for the hatched babies seems to be an issue.

      Thank you.
      :) I'll see how they do in a separate tub or tank.

    mine love to lay there eggs behind the hang on the back filter...so i don't always catch when they're laid ..so i use plexiglass tops with vent holes to keep moisture in. a good tip to new people that want to breed apple snails....don't fill your tanks up all the way they like an inch or 2 above the waterline to lay the clutch

    I have a tank with only mystery snails. They breed like crazy but I'm leaving the eggs in since there are no fish in the tank. The question I have is if some of the egg clusters fall in the water can I leave it there? I know that the eggs will drown but can it be used as a source of calcium for the others to feed on?

    So I just had a pair of gold inca snails lay a HUGE clutch. I am super excited about it, but I don't know where I'm going to put them all. I live in central MA, and the tempt outside is pretty steadily around 70 during the day right now. Would these snails be able to survive outside in an old 55gallon tank or stock tub?

    I know this is from months ago, but did you ever do a follow up? can't find it. I have a clutch from a young nail right now that appeared overnight. I've never had snails until now so I would like to hatch as many as possible, but then what do I do with them when they hatch lol get video btw.

    • @RachelOLeary
      @RachelOLeary  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      no, i dropped the ball on footage. memory card got corrupted. When they hatch, you put them into the tank you want to raise them in. If you mean what do you do with 200 snails- that I cannot answer except get more tanks

    I know you said the color changes when they're about to hatch, but I'm still having a hard time telling if my eggs are fertilized. It looks like they are turning the moldy looking blackish gray color but I'm horrible at being able to tell. How do I know for sure?

      The egg casing itself will appear much thinner and become quite brittle as the baby snails grow and are ready to emerge.

    Hi there, we’ve found our apple snails have laid bright pink eggs but when we tried to remove them as per your video they just broke with pink fluid coming out, does that mean its too early?
    Appreciate your help

      I wait a day or even two, and I do use a razor blade. Eliminates possibility of killing a bunch of them because they were too fragile

    Love apple snails but in the UK they're really hard to come by because they recently became illegal to import and I think sell. They've become too invasive here apparently.

    3 years ago I added 4 apple snails... 2 years after I had a complete plague of apple snails in my 600 L. aquarium. I didn't know what to do with them, besides many of them where dying because of the lack of food. I started to give them away. I didn't even plan that :O

    Hi Rachel, just one point of confusion for me. Will snails breed if they are different colors, or will say only yellows breed with yellows and purples with purples?

    • @RachelOLeary
      @RachelOLeary  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes, they are not discriminatory!
