    Hey Alan, I have been subscribed for a while. I do enjoy your channel and your videos have been very helpful. I do not always get to watch every upload but feel very lucky now that I've clicked on this one. I went to school in Wichita Falls (MSU)... and you took me down memory lane for a minute. Keep up the good work.

    What's a "Starting Strength" gym? Is it for beginners?

    • @benmowbray370
      @benmowbray370 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, they're just gyms owned by certified starting strength coaches. All levels of athletes can train at them. Starting Strength is the name of the company, and doesn't necessarily refer specifically to the novice program. If you did happen to be a novice, you would run starting strength. But if you were an intermediate or advanced trainee, you would run an intermediate or advanced program

    Hi Alan, what's with the recent starting strength dogma you're pushing against high bar squats?

    • @PapalLifter
      @PapalLifter 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I actually just started reading SS and am almost done the chapter on 'the squat'. I think the main reason he at least prefers, and recommends/teaches low bar is due to the book saying that low bar trains the posterior chain better. The book goes into detail about it but in short the high bar is used by Oly lifters because it mimics the snatch/C&J. But the hip draaaave is decreased in the high bar due to the position of the bar on the traps, while the low bar works the entire posterior chain (not just focusing on the quads like the high bar.) I can see both points of view, however I've seen oly weightlifters who do low bar. Sorry for the long paragraph. I don't speak for Alan but that's probably why if I had to guess.

      ICF is a terrible beginner program. Way too much volume, way too much potential to plateau really early, way too much potential for injury, way too long of workouts.

    • @nevermind824
      @nevermind824 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      SooperBeez because it's a beginner program. Why would a competitor, most likely advanced, use it now?

    • @SooperBeez
      @SooperBeez 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      because I was asking for a beginners advice on where to start, I dont lift but i like to talk to people in person for advice, I usually get more detailed info and personal perspective insight.

    • @salsolis9254
      @salsolis9254 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      A lot of people who have a lot of lifting experience can't particularly remember what they did when they first first fiiiiiiiiirst started. It's a lot of trial and error, but because they stay at it they get stronger. As they get stronger, they are more experienced and start figuring out what works for them. But by the time they figure out what works for them, they are no longer a novice.
      The idea with SS is two fold. One the one hand it's a particular way of teaching and executing the lifts (i.e. emphasis on mid-foot balance, hip drive out of the squat, press technique, etc.) On the other side, it's a set and simple method of programming to get you as strong as it can in the most efficient way possible. Once you get to a point where you cannot add weight to the bar every week, you have essentially graduated the Starting Strength Novice Linear Progression Program and you're ready to start implementing other training methods.
      It's not as sexy as % based training, or high volume high intensity stuff, or extreme stress that leave you unable to walk for a couple of days. The linear progression is super simple, and it's effectiveness is derived from the body's stress adaptation function.
      I hope I gave you enough information to help you understand a different perspective.

    I love how rip is a no bullshit kind of man. I think rippetoe is frustrated because he knows hes right and alot of un informed people argue with him. I hope to meet him in chicagos seminar and I hope to meet Alan there too. I was not suprised that Alan gravitated to Starting Strength after following Alan for some time now becuase Alan is a person that is always hungry for knowledge. I have recently rehabilitated 10 people using the starting strength model an will give all I have to try to become a starting strength coach. I just hope Mark Rippetoe doesnt eat me and if he does then I will be honored to be digested by him and come out of his butthole. I only hope I dont give him indigestion.

    4:17 Actually Arthur Jones made Nautilus, however this sign perfectly reflects the cognitive dissonance that makes Mark Rippetoe a fool/Trump voter. Nautilus equipment was designed to cater to the human body and create multi directional resistance. The barbell forces the lifter to conform to it's limitations and provides resistance in a straight line from one direction (as gravity dictates). It's just a matter of getting your head around the fact that muscle and thus strength is not built by balance and skill, but by restricting movement powered by muscular contraction in an incrementally loadable fashion.
