    I had a hernia, was told by the surgeon to stop heavy barbell training until after surgery, 4 weeks after surgery went back to training, now im stronger than before. If you have a hernia get that shit fixed asap, hernias do not repair by themselves, they only get worse and worse. A small hernia is way easier to fix and recover from than a large hernia because you were too stubborn to stop lifting and get it fixed.

      Same here - no problem after surgery. Also took care of it, as soon as I discovered I had one. Nick Best had one inguinal repaired back in 2001. He never had a problem - he squats and deadlift over 800 pounds!

      @@respectedmastermind If it were me, i'd find a different surgeon.
      I'm glad i got mine repaired while it was small. The thought of it getting worse was terrifying to me. Actual guts coming through would be bad enough, but the thought of them descending down into the scrotum is just about the last thing on earth i'd want.
      I did lift heavy for months with it, and didn't even know i had it at first.
      Still, i took the time off pre and post surgery.
      Missed a meet i was prepping for, and that stings, but i'd do the same again.
      Took the time off to do a bit of a cut.

    Been training with a partial hernia for about a year. My doctor told me to just keep on lifting & going on as normal. Take it easy if it starts hurting/bulging acting up & to contact him. He said if the hernia is going to go... it’s just going to go. Regardless of physical activity if the guts want out they’ll make it out and when/if they do it’ll be dealt with at that time. My Dr. subscribes to the mindset of training untamed.

      An actual hernia, partial or complete tear, will not go away on its own. Yes you can continue training with a hernia (I have and made prs). If you have OPEN Hernia repair, recovery will be approximately 6 weeks. Yes I tried to come back early and yes, I was met with pretty intense pain around surgery site. But afterwards I have made significant progress again and I will highly recommend to eat plenty of fiber. Any pain I feel now comes from constipation rather than actual lifting

    When you have herniated disc and you watch this video and the ansvers on your questions never appear. Then it is time to realize that hernia and herniated disc are two different things.

    • @DPMixing
      @DPMixing 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very different. One is the bulging of the intestines through a weakening in the abdominal cavity. And the other is the bulging of the intervertebral discs pushing on nerves in the spine. The later is probably a much harder injury to train with because it's directly pushing on the nerves of the spine which affects everything downstream. Many people can train through an abdominal hernia because it's just weakened muscles that usually haven't fully torn it's uncomfortable but bearable. Versus a herniated disk is actually directly pushing on the nerves and can cause serve sharp pains or numbness.

    I’ve had an inguinal hernia for almost 4 years now. Purchased a hernia belt within a month of it. I’ve continued powerlifting the whole time...I have to wear the hernia belt under 2 pairs of compression shorts during training. All while having the hernia I’ve went from benching 265 to 305, deadlifting 500 to 555 and squatting 315 to 415....all at sub 180 BW. Been PLing for around 6 years. However, I’ve had the itch to compete for years and as Alan did I’ve put off getting surgery because of fear of “losing gains”. The itch to compete in powerlifting has only grown stronger, and I will have to get the hernia repaired before conpeting as meets don’t allow hernia belts. Basically what I’m saying is listen to Alan and don’t put off surgery or let it hold you back from competing as I have done.

It was yet another lesson for me that you NEED to go to the doctor asap when shit goes wrong and also you should expect the doctor to be wrong half the time.

  • @skarpskyttar

    I have two hernias, one umbilical which I probably was born with and one abdominal 4 cm above it. Been 4 years in the military with them and powerlifting for 6 years (but I use a belt religiously whenever I do a movement involving a lot of intraabdominal pressure). Ive gotten them looked at by a surgeon and different doctors, I am myself halfway through medical school. A small hernia isnt a problem, but a bulging one isnt to be ignored. You can train with them, but they will never go away and you cannot train them away. The issue is not the hernia itself, its the risk of the hernia getting incarcerated. If it does, its acute as its often the intestines who gets pushed through the hole, stuck and get stripped of blood supply.

    Strangely your story sounded exactly like mine except I took it much easier during recovery. My main observation from this incident as to what could have caused the hernia 1. In general a person is predisposed to getting a hernia. It accelerates of your physically active 2. I think using a belt played a role. I don’t use a belt after surgery and still do the same PRs. Learning was that the belt was creating unnecessary abdominal pressure.

    This is a great video on inguinal hernias, but it's probably worth distinguishing the different types of hernias. Muscle belly hernias are not the same as inguinal hernias and not at all the same as herniated discs (just listed them because of popularity). Inguinal hernias are mostly genetic, from what I understand, and based on how your inguinal canal develops as a youth. Usually not relating to specific trauma, whereas the other two could be.

    I had the same surgery when I was 35 back in 2014. Inguinal hernia's are purely genetic. They can't be caused by lifting weights or prevented by lifting weights. They can happen to new born babies or young toddlers even teenagers or any age of your adult life. There are no restrictions after surgery but you probably won't want to do any kind of workout that involves the abs for about 4 to 6 days. But you can lift weights or ride a bike if you feel up to it. If you feel like a particular activity or movement gives you too much pain then simply don't do that until you feel like you can.

    Must've sucked having to choose between your training and treatment. I'm glad it worked out in the end! Working on a hospital floor where I see frequent hernia repairs, I wouldn't recommend the general public to continue weightlifting until after receiving OK from an MD. Not every hernia needs surgical attention, but it definitely warrants a trip to the doctor. If it can be reduced without surgery, wonderful news! But if it becomes recurrent or you have severe pain/nausea/vomiting with a hernia, you need a trip to the ER-that could mean bowel incarceration/strangulation.
    Thanks for sharing the experience man! I can't imagine training through a hernia, that's some fortitude

  • @melange78
    @melange78 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Guys often get hernia, it is one of the most common types of surgeries they do at hospitals, at some hospitals the most common. It is not a specific problem with a specific exercise but some exercises do seem to cause more problems than others, for example when you press the legs together or when you do dumbbell single arm rows so you get an asymmetric load on the lower abs. Most of these exercises you can do slightly different in order to prevent hernias, like a dumbbell single arm row you can stand with both legs on the ground instead of having one leg on the bench an so forth.

Granted im a lot older than you were, 37, but i had surgery like you in November. Mine was robotic, but same thing. Simple clean up and add mesh. Was in the gym less than a week later just moving around, and slowly built back up to now im lifting basically back to where i was. Didn't lose much strength at all in the end, definitely some, but it was short term. Id recommend thinking about surgery eventually, as the hernia won't go away or get better on its own. Robotic however will potentially mean incisions about the wasteline (which i don't really care about, but wasn't informed about either) so go laproscopic if you don't want that. Dr's will often push for robotic because it pays better, gives them experience and gives the robot use...

I’m lifting more now than pre-op. Umbilical hernia was always a chronic pain but I was so used to it I didn’t notice how bad it actually was. Can’t believe I waited 15 years!! If you have a hernia get it fixed, your gains await…

      Most recovery plans they give you are very cautious. They don't want you to overdo it and screw up all the work they just did. Everybody's body will recover at a different rate. I'd also guess that it depends on the size of the hernia.

      3 years after my open inguinal hernia surgery and I feel ok but I still do not lift intense weights, I feel the surgical area really sore and warning me not to go beyond that when I try to lift something really heavy or when I force maximal abdominal pressure. After surgery you will never be the same again unless you go and do it early (I was stubborn and postponed my hernia surgery for a year) or do it laparoscopic. Do your research before doing it.

    Got a Inguinal Hernia two weeks ago, swallowed the wrong way and went into a coughing fit and suddenly I felt a slight tension in my groin only to discover a lump. Years of weight training, rock climbing, cycling and martial arts no problem but if you cough standing up straight you have pretty good chance of getting one. The doc says nothing to worry about, hmm I don't really believe that to be honest, bought a couple of fairly expensive sport trusses which I wear while training, helps a lot.
    Since covid I have been training in the house rather than the gym; I had to modify my training because of the lack of equipment. Basically I now have a bench and a couple of adjustable dumbbells which max out 30kgs each, but I also bought a set of various heavy gauge square rubber bands. The resistance on the rubbers bands are more than equal to anything on my dumbells but the important part is this, most injuries in training with weights is rarely while doing the exercise but more often or not by getting yourself into the correct position to do the exercise or just moving the equipment about and not concentrating what you are doing.
    The other common method of creating an injury is lifting too heavy and hurting yourself by cheating. I have found that using bands instead of weights removes these occasions where you are likely to injure yourself but more importantly you can train even while you have a hernia because you can train more effectively due to nature that exercise is more focused. With resistance bands it seems easier to isolate the muscle group you are training without bringing the rest of your body to help you exercise; isolating the muscle group your training is the most important thing you must do while you have a hernia, strict isolated muscle group training is essential.
    I still intend to push for surgery though, a hernia doesn't heal itself and it can only get worse over time especially if you train or your work involves physical labour. I'm 67 so I expect that my recuperation will take longer after surgery than someone in their 30s or 40s., every injury takes longer to heal the older you get, you just have to suck it up and except that fact.

    • @kimstockdale632
      @kimstockdale632 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Did you have surgery? Assuming yes, what type surgery and how long ago? I'm close to your age with inguinal hernia, 70, and concerned I've spent 40 years conditioning my abs, and fearful of permanent atrophy if I can't exercise my abs for an extended period.

    • @Insolation1
      @Insolation1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kimstockdale632 I got open surgery and it was big, no key hole had to get a mesh. The success rate with a mesh is far higher, don't consider anything else. I went for a local anesthetic, didn't want a general or a spinal block, with a spinal block you sometimes require a catheter after the operation because you may not be able to pee. To be honest the worst part of the operation was waiting for it, I have suffered worse in the dentists chair. My operation took over an hour but it didn't bother me, after the operation I was wheeled back to my room where I ate a three course lunch and drank a lot of water before being sent home. I kept drinking water until I went to bed, the reason for drinking water is that also effects your stool, the water makes it very lose. Frequently after a hernia operation you are constipated for several days, this means when you eventually go to the toilet its difficult to say the least, you cannot press because of the wound. Because I drank a lot of water I was able to go the next morning to the toilet without a problem, I just let gravity do it without needing to press.
      Another thing I didn't tale any painkillers other than paracetamol, the reason for this, is that strong painkillers the hospital give you will make you constipated, their way of offsetting this is too also give you laxatives. I didn't want either of these things, basically it's not all that painful after the operation. The next morning I got up early had my porridge and then coffee, after that I went into the garden and watered my bog garden plants and fed my fish. I did everything pretty carefully though not lifting anything heavy, in fact I didn't lift anything heavy for twelve weeks. I cannot emphasise that enough, do not do anything for twelve weeks if you wish to have a successful post operation.
      After twelve weeks I started cycling again, about ten miles at a leisurely pace every day for two weeks, after that I decided to go back to the gym and started very light, doing lots of reps for two weeks, after that I started increasing the weight. I have hardly noticed my hernia operation since I started back training, I'm back to cycling thirty miles at a time three to four times a week, which I usually alternate with the gym. I did change my gym regime though, I now train lighter but only using cables which intersperse with some stretching. I haven't done any ab exercises and I don't intend to. If you damage your mesh then you're in a world of trouble and I ain't going there, fact is when you are doing any resistance training you are involving your abs anyway, so there is no requirement to do isolated ab exercises, none at all. If you want to build your core then do all your exercise, right side first fallowed by the left, this done easier by using cables or bands. Example lets say you are doing pulldowns, then pull with one arm first then move onto the other arm, I do that for all my exercises, this gradually builds core and abs because you have to keep yourself anchored continually while exercising. Another major benefit doing it this way is that it's a lot kinder to your joints, the older it's not your strength that gives out but ligaments and tendons and also cartilage that hold your body together.
      One final thing don't wait too long before your operation, I nearly died through my hernia being almost being strangulated, my intestines came out and fell into my testicles and when out in A&E they a had some difficulty putting everything back in. That's when I decide to pay for this operation. So don't wait.

    This is a good video. You don't need to be scared to get surgery. If you get it fixed, you'll feel a lot better. Don't listen to all the people trying to scare you, the surgery is fine. If I can give you a piece of advice, get up and walk after the surgery. The blood flow and circulation will help the mesh adhere to your body. Also do yoga. Stretch it out. Allow your body to heal naturally. Down time is about two weeks. Then it is healed.

    From what I've read people who develop inguinal hernias basically have had the condition since birth. The tissue covering the inguinal canal (where the spermetic cord goes from inside to outside of the body) is just weak in some people and over their lifespan it eventually gets strained enough that it tears and allows intestines to bulge out. So if you aren't naturally prone to hernia you probable won't ever get one from weight lifting so don't worry about it. A sports hernia is a muscle tear and is a completely different thing.

    Very interesting vid! Had a hernia on each side... Got an operation for the first one back when I was 3 year old (so 37 years ago) and second one back when I was 24. At that time, I was lifting weights, but not seriously, and was playing badminton competitively (so lots of stop and go, jumping and overstretching, was REALLY painful!). Even then, like Alan, not wanting to lose my progress or stop competing, I kept going for around 3 years before seeking medical attention and did so only when my leg's nerves were so compressed that I felt pain all the way down to my ankle even when sitting down (and because my [then new] girlfriend, who is a doctor, saw my hernia and was like:"WTF?!? Get that hernia fixed ASAP!")! My operation got scheduled right the next week because the surgeon said I let it go pretty bad... My dad also got one, on one side (got an operation 3 years ago and even though he was 67, he got back to lifting heavy like a month after). All in all, I think if you have a weakness in that area, as soon as you move around it's bound to be problematic someday! Still it IS worth seeking medical attention, because once you get it fixed, it almost never comes back and you feel SO much better!

    My husband and me both do Jujutsu and Muay Thai, and have done for over 15 years, so we are pretty fit and strong. He got an Inguinal Hernia through coughing, yeah coughing took him out. He was talking while eating and and it went down the wrong way, he kept on trying to keep talking even while coughing but gave in and stood up for a drink of water, he kept coughing standing up straight and that's what did it, standing up straight. Just like when you are lifting a weight and turning at the same time you should bend your knees and you also should bend your knees while coughing or sneezing violently. If you don't in both these occasions then you run the risk of a inguinal hernia when coughing or when lifting a weight and turning, you can end up with a herniated disk. Both just a bit more than annoying. If you go for Inguinal Hernia OP, then eat vegetable stew the day before the OP and for a couple of days after, makes going to the toilet a lot more easier initially after the OP, you definitely don't want to be straining in that department for quite a few days after it, that's where most of the pain comes from for the first few days

On a forum, a lady had asked the same question from her hospital bed one day before. Neat. Her doctors were telling her the same as mine, don't lift anything for 6 weeks. Baraki responded more or less that she should wait a week, 2 if she felt she needed it and ease back into training. (I'm not quoting word for word so search that post) I waited 10 days and went to gym and worked up to moderate weight for me on squat, bench, deadlift. Just some sets of 5. The only lift that caused discomfort was bench due to stretch while arching my back. I was very grateful I found that post.

It does suck when I stand or walk for a while, but if I lay on my back and tuck my knees to my chest I can feel them pop back into place and then it's all good temporarily. Hernias in young people (under 40) are 99% caused by congenital defects at birth (you are born with a dilated deep inguinal ring, this comes from the patent processus vaginalis not being properly closed when you were a fetus. Just some info for those who think hernias are caused by lifting, even coughing produces much larger intra abdominal pressure than lifting (as proven by multiple studies). Cheers!

    This is very convenient, I developed a hernia as well. I don't have insurance so if somethings wrong im screwed. I was hoping it might be something like some hip abductor/flexor thing, but that's unlikely. After a month it still hasn't gotten better. The interesting thing is that I had mild discomfort and then pain on both the left and right side of my groin. Now the left feels fine, mostly, but the right is still jacked. Haven't done anything legs in almost a month. My upper lower split is now just me doing upper and than screwing around in the gym on lower days. Guess I could at least get a checkup.

    I believe your hernia may have been caused by all the yelling one would do in boot camp. I too currently have a hernia, but a hernia specialist told me that its so miniscule that i can lift without restrictions. That was 3 years ago and I still deadlift and farmer walk and front load carry on the regular without discomfort. The only thing that bothers my hernia is prolonged coughing or constant yelling during coaching season. So thats why I guess yelling constantly would cause such an increase in pressure that a hernia could result.

    I had an Inguinal Hernia repaired on my right side in 2020 using laparoscopic technique with mesh. The surgery went great, and that side is still ok. 2 weeks ago I think I got one on my left side. There's no bulge, but every morning when I stand up, the first time I cough or clear my throat, I get this painful shifting in my stomach right above my penis, and the adductors in my thigh are really sore all day.. Then, it's just generally sore for the rest of the day. The first Hernia I had was paid for by my employer because it was a work injury, but even though this new Hernia is also a work injury, my employer says I will be fired if I report it because I didn't report it soon enough.

    I have had inguinal hernia repairs on both sides. Left side 19 years ago and right side 2 years ago. I am 57 years old and continue to train squat, bench and deadlift for strength and size with no issues what so ever. So don't let it get in your head and don't get noceboed by your doctor. Even when I was in my 30's and jacked as F*ck my doctor freaked out when he heard talk of 2x body weight lifts. He still recommends lifting no more than your body weight...guess I have to gain weight!

    I had an inguinal hernia since i was born. Never had an issue with it.. minor pain or discomfort that comes once or twice a year, not a big deal though. i workout, play soccer, lift, train and all was fine..however ive always kept in my mind that a hernia surgery must take place today or tomorrow.. when we age problems start to appear.. 8 months ago i accidently hit my back, doctors run tests and everything and i was told that i have an inguinal hernia and its better to have the surgery.. a week ago i did the open hernia operation with a medical mesh. im 29 now and i belive its the right choice.. you will walk out of the hospital the same or next day of the surgery, you'll have a couple of days of pain and then u'll start to feel much better... you can do almost everything except for carrying weight, thats a red line for 5-8 week.. i'll give it 12 weeks, just in case.
    Long story short, if you have a hernia, get that surgery done. Remember when you age problems will appear and what was easy to fix, we'll become harder

DO NEVER GET overweight and you're all fine.., if you're already a skinny dude it should be a plus for you. again your only enemy is weight! from experience. now I'm working on losing weight (I'm +20kg extra weight). get that surgery, workout, and stay healthy, enjoy ur life
