    In this video I talk about the belt clean in strongman. A belt clean is when someone delibrately uses their belt to rest the axle bar during the clean, and then launches the axle bar off their belt to the rack position. Do you think belt cleans should be allowed in strongman?

To me it doesn’t matter as long as whatever rules are in place for the contest are applied uniformly and everyone knows what they are.

    Belt cleans are probably the most real world realistic use of strength equipment I can think of. At work, you *might* use some kind of abdominal compression device, if you're having back issues, but you almost always have a regular belt on, and I personally regularly depend on it to hold heavy shit.

      @@garysanders6091 Sure, but why draw the line at belt cleans? What about all the other equipment? All I'm saying is that belt cleans are the purest use of strength equipment that I can find in the sport. I would say belt cleans are a more probable use of equipment than the shoes they use on truck pulls.

    • @garysanders6091

      @@camerontetz2011 It really comes down to your personal opinion on where you'd like the line to be drawn.

    • @camerontetz2011
      @camerontetz2011 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@garysanders6091 Personally, I don't like the direction strongman is going in general. It feels... Too much like powerlifting. If I wanted a perfectly fair competition of pure strength, I would watch powerlifting or weightlifting. In my opinion, cheesy strategies and clever workarounds are the spirit of strongman. The idea of strict form regulations on a lift like the continental clean, which is an inherently silly challenge to begin with, is stark bastardization of the game altogether.
      What is the continental clean "supposed" to test? Grip? No, because the bar is ungrippable, it must be mixed gripped. Clean and press power? No, because then you'd just use an olympic barbell. Diaphragmatic expansion power? No, that's just absurd. The real answer is "nothing." Strongman shouldn't be about "testing" power. The axle bar is just supposed to be *awkward.* The competitors are supposed to be *uncertain* about how to do the movement, they are supposed to be forced to act creatively and with great strength. Using a skilled and graceful approach used to be almost a matter of luck. How are you gonna carry these barrels as big as you are? How are you gonna bend this bar? How are you gonna navigate this rocky castle ruin with a wheelbarrow full of rolling stones? This isn't possible once the thickness of the bar and even the expectations of the movement become standardized and regulated. Then it becomes just some stupid clean and jerk for fat clowns.

    Great topic and I always enjoy seeing the different point of views.
    Personally, I always prefer less reliance on equipment "for my own lifting". I don't care what anyone else does. If the rules say the bar can rest on the belt, it's the same rule for everyone in the comp. As I got to the end of my powerlifting days, I didn't use anything... no belt, wraps, whatever. That was my choice. It's just how I prefer to measure my own progression. As I move into strongman, I use the same process. I choose to train and lift with zero equipment. And I'll compete the same way. That has nothing to do what other lifters do in their training/competing. I'm no pro strongman, nor will I ever be, and I do it to improve myself so using equipment doesn't make sense for my goals.
    When you talk about records, then it gets a little dicey. Without standards that apply across the board, you'll have what we have in powerlifting... dozens of "world records" when the standards of equipment and judging are anything but.
    So, I guess this was a long way of saying "operate within the rules of the contest you are entering". But it did divert my attention from the boring Zoom meeting I was supposed to be listening to for the last 15 minutes...

    Every amateur USS comp i've done has allowed you to clean to your belt if you immediately rack.
    Also, the entire point of strongman is to move the most weight possible. Someone using straps is able to move more weight in a deadlift than someone not using straps. Someone using tacky is able to move more weight when picking a stone than someone not using tacky.
    The ENTIRE point of strongman is to move heavy weight, not for it to be "hard." It's already fucking hard.
    There either needs to be an unequipped category or not. Until then, people are going to take every advantage to put up the heaviest weight.

    "all rules are arbitrary" which is why it's up to the organizer, as long as the same rules apply to everyone, then you can either accept them, or not play, the end. It's not "easier", because you're not fighting the bar, you're fighting the other competitors, and they get the same advantages you do. Allowing you to lift more does not make it easier for you to defeat other people who are also allowed to lift more.

    I think it is worth not that larger competitors can sort of belt clean without directly resting on the belt. Like, the belt is so tight that they end up with a big muffin top, then the bar goes on that muffin top, and that belt is largely supported by the belt itself. Without the belt, the athlete wouldn’t have that same ‘shelf’ and when the bar is on that shelf, the belt is redistributing that weight.

    I have to disagree with the belly aspect, the bar on some of the bigger strongmen would not be able to rest on top of their belly at such a high point without the belt supporting underneath. Now, if you could show me this isn't the case and they lift beltless without a change in the position then I'll change my mind.

  • @ElectricAlien577

    If everyone has to follow the exact same rules, it doesn't matter what the rules are. If everyone is allowed to do belt cleans, the strongest person will still do the best and heaviest belt clean. If the rules are no belt cleans, the strongest person will do the best regular clean.

  • @adamwoolston253
    @adamwoolston253 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The beauty of strongman IS the lack of standardization. “Here’s some random strength events, some you’ve never done before, some you’ve done but we’re randomly imposing different rules than what you’re used to. Have fun!” It means you need to train for a variety of different types of lifts with a variety of different techniques and equipment, because you never know what will and won’t be asked of you. You have to just be really strong overall. As opposed to powerlifting where it’s the same three lifts, same exact rules, and you pick the weights. Nothing wrong with powerlifting, it’s just that the sports exist in different spheres and that’s a good thing.
    That said, I personally prefer whatever rule set looks as impressive as possible to the casual observer because that will grow the sport the best. Can we put another 100 pounds on the deadlift and allow suits? Do it then! Give them tacky on Atlas stones and they can pick up bigger stones? Heck yeah! Use tires instead of plates so the barbell looks massive (even though it’s actually easier because it’s a higher pick but that allows even more weight)? Great! Allow straps on farmers so they can pick up bigger implements? Actually… no, the causal observer will notice how much that makes farmers considerably easier, so empty hands it is! Go ahead and belt clean in my opinion.
    One exception: Obviously standardize for world records. You can’t claim Thor’s record for pulling 502 kg on a hummer tire or an elephant bar. You shouldn’t be able to claim axel bar WR if you belt clean. But that doesn’t mean Hummer Tire or Elephant Bar lifts aren’t legitimate, just like belt cleans. I’m tired of us gate keeping in the sport. Like when I got told by some guy at my gym that my PR on a wagon wheel deadlift didn’t count because it was wagon wheel. Like dude, you know I track regular deadlift PRs separately right? I’m not gonna go around claiming that towards my powerlifting total, it’s just a PR in THIS SPECIFIC LIFT

Anyone who wants to make their exercise easier.... doesn't actually want to exercise

  • @gedamco1799

    Apparently the challenge is to lift the heaviest weight while overcoming unfavorable conditions like the thickness of the bar that doesn't allow a solid grip from the start. So, a belt clean is like competing in a hurdles event, but avoiding some hurdles. What you're really doing is softening the challenge.

    You want straps for your deadlift? Sure but they might be in the way for throwing events.
    Trying to standardise strongman is a but silly since a big way that it differs from powerlifting is that it is more a spectacle of strength and novel applications add to that.
    As long as everyone competing at the show has the same rules, I don't see a problem with belt cleans.

One of the largest crutches from powerlifting is the bench width allowed by all lifters no matter what weight class. This allows people to use good techniques to “complete” a lift that sometimes moves less than 6 inches. Though totally allowed the average viewer writes it off as a complete joke and a high level competitor doesn’t want to see his sport come to that

    If the competition uses a Monolift, then you should likely train with a Monolift if there's one at your gym and maximize the load without a walkout.
    However, most competitions don't use a monolift and you do have to walk out so therefore you should learn how to walk out a squat regardless.
