  • Easy Company continues to endure harsh winter cold in the Ardennes Forest, along with continuous German shelling. Morale is at an all-time low due to mounting casualties and ineffectual leadership.

    The run of Speirs through the town of Foy was actually longer than what was portrayed in the episode! What a guy! Just don't take a cigarette from him though 😂😂😂

    Lip knew that Malarkey needed some time off the line or he would start to crack, but he also knew Malarkey's strong sense of loyalty wouldn't allow him leave the other men who were on the line, so Lip convinced him to go to the aid station by making it about saying goodbye to Buck because Buck would appreciate it. Lip is such a good leader who really understands his men.

    The fact that it was the coldest winter in Europe in decades was what helped save Guarnere and Toye. Their wounds were exposed to the frigid weather, while Hoobler’s wound bled freely because he was bundled up.

    I remember in the Barracks (50th Ann. of the Battle of the Bulge reenactment in PA) as we were sitting around drinking 1 of r guys says to Wild Bill "hey Bill, i'am going over and seeing the area of the line you held, you want me to bring anything back??" we all stop and look at Bill who lowers his beer looks him in the eye and says "Yeah, if you can find my leg that would be great " and then he smiled and we all cheered and made many toasts to Bill's leg (and too Hinkel). Even XXX got a chuckle out of it , then XX started singing his little ditty's and then it was just a blur after that , dam Prop Blast that stuff will sneak up on you. epic hang over were had by all. But yeah any vet who fought in that battle remembers the cold, lack of food and supplies. we also had Jack Agnew with us that time, who was with the "Filthy 13" in Normandy but by the time of the Bulge many of those guys were sent from the Demo section too the Pathfinders and were at the school in France when the 101st was deployed, so they made the only combat jump into the area to set up contact for the resupply drops for the division.

    OK, i checked in with the keeper of the keys on the History of E co. so per my buddy & the men of Easy co. - "they hated him. The only thing they didn't like in the series is that it didn't show the absolutely massive foxhole he had the Co HQ guys did for him. "It was as big as a hotel". i heard Wild Bill say that too about Dike's foxhole
    so Dike wasn't hit during the assault on Foy. A lot of people think he was due to the miniseries and some comments Clancy Lyall made (even though he never saw Dike during the assault). I have copies of Speirs letters to Winters Dike wasn’t hit there. There’s absolutely no record of him being hit and I have all the morning report copies." this is from the 2nd CO of E/506th living history unit and He spent alot of time with many of the E co vets and is Constance contact with their family members to this day. and at this moment leading the "Path of Easy Tour" on their trip.

    I think the key to understanding Lt. Spiers is from the "advice" he gave to Blithe back around Carantan (I think that is where it was), that you just have to accept that you are already dead. While I'm not quite sure how you talk yourself into believing that, it does explain why Spiers would run across the battlefield to give orders to a platoon, and then run back. He understood the battle was not about him, that his job was to ensure the success of the mission and to do it with a minimum of casualties. I also think at the end of this episode that we see the other side of Spiers (and in the next one) -- that it isn't that he didn't care and was overly strict/tough on his men, rather that he understood what he needed to be in order to lead, that he needed some separation from his men -- which you can argue is what caused Buck to "fail," he got too close to his men and it broke him when they died.
    In many ways, I see similar traits between Winters and Spiers as far as leadership, particularly the idea of leading from the front -- just that Winters doesn't come off as gruff as Spiers does.

      I think there was a similar mindset for training for the Spartan Warrior iirc. Go into battle a dead man - and if you return alive through it all, you have earned your life back once more. But until that moment that everything is done and over... you're dead.

    Keep in mind other units suffered much more then E co during the fighting in the Bulge this battle was brutal. for example A co. 551st PIB (parachute infantry battalion) was assigned to the 82nd Airborne during the Bulge on 7 Jan while taking the village of Rochelinval, Belgium (defended by about 500 German troops ) A co with 80 troopers lead the attack only 7 troopers made it back to the starting point. The 551st took the Village but at a high cost, out of all the Airborne units fighting in the Bulge the 551st took 85% casualties they went in with 643 Troopers and came out with 14 officers & 96 Troopers.

    Lt. Dyke gets a bad rap. He wasn't necessarily a BAD soldier but an average one who transferred into a company of badasses that was Easy Company. I believe he won a bronze star earlier on in the war for rescuing some fellow soldiers. During the assault on Foy, he was actually shot several times and most likely went into shock before Speirs relieved him. Like with Hoobler, heavy layers of clothes probably prevented others from seeing just how badly wounded he was.

    • @vipwanrinkle6439
      @vipwanrinkle6439 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      he was a recipient of 2 bronze stars and a Purple Heart. I don’t really like how the show portrays him of being this incompetent officer which maybe he was somewhat but he was still a combat veteran with multiple medals.

      False. He was not shot at Foy. Every Easy memoir corroborated that he was a lousy officer who didn't care about them. He DID abandon his men during the heavy shelling.

    23:41 "Lipton was second only to Winters for who the company looks to" Of course. Lip was the Co. First Sgt. He was the highest ranking enlisted person in the E Co. As the Co First Sgt, he was responsible for all the enlisted men in the company. He reported directly to the Company CO. (Until Winters got promoted to 2nd Bn. XO)

    18:44 in reality they actually dumbed it down from what happened in real life. During the real run in Foy.. Ronald Speirs had to run about half a mile.., in the middle of a German infested town. That was a lot longer than what they depicted in the series. This is got to be the bravest thing any Soldier has ever done.

      Washington crossed the Delaware River to attack the Hessian troops holding Trenton, NJ on December 25-26, 1776. The Continental Army wintered at Valley Forge, PA on the Schuykill River the winter of 1777-78, but you're right about it being a near breaking point.
