The way the club dealt with this incident was an absolute disgrace, particularly O’Leary with his fucking book. I genuinely believe the state the club is in can be traced directly to the absolutely shambolic handling of something which should not have been so much of a big deal.
when David O'Leary started to lose the dressing room top of the league at Christmas leeds united on trial book comes out lost at Cardiff in the FA cup ended up 5th that season :(
The part that is never mentioned in this whole saga was the incident that triggered the incident in the first place. It was made out by Piers Morgan (an Arsenal fan with a vested interest) that this was a racist attack. Nothing is ever mentioned of the assault in the nightclub of a girl in the players group by one of those later attacked. That was all conveniently brushed under the carpet along with the lack of any legal action against the Mirror Group and their editors for contempt of court. While O'Leary may go on about a boozy night out he as a manager had a responsibility to ensure the players were where they were supposed to be on a week night. Revie used to regularly go round the pubs in Leeds close to where his players lived to ensure they were following club protocol. Finally what aggrieved Bowyer more than anything was the fact that the club fined him immediately after the court case when he had not been awarded costs even though found not guilty. He had to already pay out the legal costs for two trials for something he didn't do. He had given his all for the club even while on trial. But the club decided that PR was more important than the wellbeing of a key player. The club could quite easily have said to Bowyer that they would help with his legal costs in the background because of the way he had conducted himself during the trials but no publicity Pete was more concerned with his own image.
When Bowyer was at his height he was considered on par with the likes of Lampard and Gerrard when they were at there height. He didn’t do much when he left Leeds tho.

Totally agree. The book especially was a disaster for the club.

Yeah, it's like we never really recovered after the Cardiff game - the final straw...
You weren’t top of the league at Christmas that season because we beat 4-3 at elland road to overtake you last game before Christmas

Interesting. I hadn't heard the bit about the girl in the players' group before - but then I live on the other side of the world...
