people wax lyrical about this leeds team but in paper was it really that good? erik bakke, lee bowyer, david batty, dominic matteo, alan smith?.... not exactly world beaters... i agree their were some speical players in this team though..you can see from the bench it wasnt that great a squad...
Martyin/Robinson, Kelly/Mills, Ferdinand/Radebe, Woodgate/Matteo, Harte, Bowyer, Batty, Dacourt, Kewell, Viduka/Keane, Smith/Fowler. Ferdinand, Woodgate, Kewell and Viduka were top class IMO.
True, few were huge international stars but a big point about this team was that it, at its best, it played like a team. Also, for my money, Batty and Bowyer were worth their weight in gold - Bowyer was the envy of every other manager for a while and Batty was always underestimated by those who didn't notice how many opposition attacks he broke up, and how many times he grabbed possession so we could attack again.
Its all about knowing your players, bowyers was a really effective midfielder for about 4 seasons over this period. It was a very good side who proved that by getting to the last 4 of 2 european competitions 2 seasons in a row, beating spartak moscow, roma, lazio, anderlecht, milan and deportivo whilst drawing with valencia, barcerlona, milan & lazio
Fowler...till today, the only EPL hattrick-score record holder for two different clubs in one single season. (Superb).

Clearly never saw Bowyer week in week out, best in the PL and should of played for England
