This was stunning Ipswich were in great form going into this game 1 defeat and 7 wins from their last 8 which had catapulted them up from bottom to 12th 2 points short of the top half of the table within a month and a half. But this battering saw them commence a run which of 1 win in 13 which doomed them.
If it hadn't been for a horrible run of form through Dec/Jan, Liverpool would have coasted the league this season ... We only won 1 league game in NINE during that spell ... but either side of it we were winning for fun, and only finished 6 or 7 points behind Arsenal. Good season, but SHOULD have been the year Houllier built on his cup glory with a title.
That season, lpswich beat an Inter Milan which included Seedorf, Toldo, Pirlo, Vieri, Zanetti, and others. They also got relegated, and to this day have never returned to the Premiership, and are currently in league 1.
I never got to see The Premiership on ITV but I've read so many comments how bad that show was but this is far better edit of a game than what Match of the Day does these days...
At the time it seemed like there was more "analysis" and adverts than football. Match of the Day has deteriorated over time, so it may well be worse now than The Premiership was. I think a large part of the problem is that so many games are shown live now and there are restrictions on how much they're allowed to show of a live game. If you can only show a few minutes it's hard to edit it into something that flows nicely, so they seem to have stopped trying.
Its a strange one how can it hurt Sky and BT if Match of the Day could show a 20 minute edit of the main game that day. The BBC pay a lot of money for these highlights but are under so many restrictions. Its the same for midweek matches often we don't even see those games at all because of the restrictions the Premier League put on these rights. It seems you had better coverage years ago when you had Match of the Day on BBC and The Big Match on ITV.
I guess BT and Sky pay so much for the games that they want to ensure other options to see them are less attractive. The only advantage now is that all the games are shown (at least briefly) whereas in the past only a handful of games had any coverage.

Brilliant team performance! I remember that game well & started to think big things were on the horizon especially with Anelka on loan looking very hungry & sharp. Why Houllier opted to sign that fuckhead from Senegal instead of making Anelka's move permanent I'll never know, I'm sure that decision cost us a title around that time.
