I work at the shipping ports in California, I see those massive container ships all the time. The first time I seen one come into port was so terrifying simply because of how gargantuan they are. I can drive my work truck right up to it and watch it get loaded/unloaded. Mesmerizing. At night, when they're idle and everything is quiet, you can hear the tether lines creek and stretch as the water and tide slowly rocks the ship about. The sound of the lines stretching and creaking is spooky and reminds me of something out of the Pirates of the Caribbean. Seals love to beach themselves on the chin of the ship and at night they're so flippin loud with their calls and wails I can hear them clear across the yard!
Brilliant video as always Smash, awesome fishing as well. Those Pollack certainly grow big out there in the channel. Must be deep as well as all there air sacks were hanging out there mouths. Thanks for sharing.
Nice boat, bit different to that tiny crabbing boat 4 of you were on recently. You dont iki your fish, or put them in an ice slurry? Seeing as they are rod caught you have a chance to get a really premium product. The eating quality is so different
Really good to see the boys catching fish . . . but it would be more helpful if you showed the lures used, reel up techniques and the length of traces etc.
I used to buy fish in the covered market in Oxford. I realised that coley was half the price of cod and the fish were bigger, with better flakes. And, I used to catch pollock out of Poole Harbour. Are they the same fish?
Nah, they're not the same but same family and if cooked they taste the same. If you're not sure what you are catching the easiest way to identify is to check lateral line on the fish. Coalie has the line straight along the body but pollock's curves from tail upwards. Hope it helps 👍
Great video Jay nice lots of pollock good lads to go out with. Nice long day for you. What was your biggest. You didn’t do a lot of fishing. What was the total weight for your day.
Hey mate we fished from sun rise to sun set so I had the camra on and off a lot , when i make these commercial video I like to show how the lads do it more so then me being on camra , sort of documentary / vlog style video , it gives people a better understanding and feel for what they do 👍
How are the fish able to sit out like that and not spoil or go bad or anything? I've always wondered that. Or do they just catch a bunch and then stick them in an ice box? You know what, I should just keep my questions to myself until I finish watching the whole video LOL. Literally answered my question a few minutes later.
Your very rite mate I see a lot of people criticizing small fishing boats an small trawlers but they don’t know how big the super fishing boats really are ! One of the huge fishing ships could take as much as the hole guernsey fleet in a single day 😂 it’s insane to think about
I’m not going to say as it would be disrespectful to the lads to be honest , if they want to say in another video they are welcome but I wouldn’t say without there permission
You guys are spoiled in the UK and FRANCE it seems like haha. In Canada the cods we get are half the size of your cod filets XD Our pollocks are about the same as our cods in size.
Noticed my comment on how they’re gutting fish alive has been removed? I’ve been watching smash fishing for years and never have I seen this savage way of despatching a fish!
I didn’t take your comment down as I dont take any comments down , what ever you said must of been picked up from TH-cam , this is the way people get there fish fresh , I’m not going out to criticize how these boys fish I’m simply making the video to show the commercial side of fishing , in any fishing there is good and bad , also people have different opinions on fish management, I’m not hear to try tell any fishermen how to do there job or criticize them for anything as this is there job and how they feed there family’s , even if I agree or disagree with how they do it , I just want to film a side of fishing not many get to see , some people will love some video of it and some they won’t an I understand that fully and everyone is entitled to share there opinions 👍
@@SMASHFISHING thanks for the reply! I wasn’t having to have a dig at you. You do a great job with how you do things. Just shocked me how they did it 😅
and what way do you suggest, beating it over the head until it stops flapping about, have you never seen the commercial trawler fishermen deal with fish
@@johnkay7354 I wasn’t talking about other fishermen. And yes beating it over the head until it stops flapping is much better than gutting it alive. It’s not like they have too many fish in one go to do it.
@@Mar-nc1om they were pulling them in 3 at a time, they cleaned and packed when the boat went around for a new drift, ive fished on charter boats for over 30 yrs and i never seen one fish get its head crushed, its put in the box when caught, and the deck hand will gut and clean them, some are still alive,
Great question mate I thought it would come up , it’s to do with the fish being in perfect condition, hitting them on the head can bruise the fish fillets , also it’s a time thing as these boys need to catch a lot of fish to cover cost of boat and then catch enough for there wages so the quicker the better and the quicker the better quality an price they get , it makes a huge difference
They ice all the fish , just when 4 of us pulling up fish it’s hard to sort them quick so we catch loads of fish for 20 minutes then sort them an repeat
No it’s an exstra euro a kg for fish caught the same day 😂 not 1 euro a kg for the fish mate the fish sells for £5 a kg an landing 400kg plus’s of fish it starts to mount up
so they dont kill the fish until they gut them alive.then drop cigarette ash into the open cavity of the fish bruise the fish by throwing them 6/8 ft. into a slurry.
I really enjoy these commercial fishing trip videos Jay, they're educating as well as entertaining.
Thanks John 👍 I definitely put my self though it making these videos but the life experience an fishing journeys are well with the effort

In Thailand the swim bladders of fish are highly prized, deep fried they come out like massive pork scratching and sold for good money.
Awesome video jay , some beauts caught on that trip 👌
Glad you enjoyed
Pretty cool video. Nice to see commercial rod n reel fishing
Glad you enjoyed it
Notice Jack was kicking ass.
Now that's fishing at it's best. Well done geezer

Magic chum? Sounds like a landlubber invention! 🙃
Still not quite got the sealegs, eh? Awwww. 🤣
😂😂 I’m getting better on them big boats lol took me 15hours to puke this time 💪 😂
Caught the premiere, but had to watch it again with the family. Kids need to see where their food comes from. What a banger👍🇨🇦

Love the video Smash.Did you get seasick😀Do you know how many pound the catch was ?😀
I think it’s about 850 lbs of fish
Brilliant ! 🐡
What an experience. How big do Pollack grow? Certainly caught some big ones there.
Pollack can go over 20lbs haha big fish I think the biggest we had was round 12 lb
enjoyed the video looked like fun but also hard work cheers
Thanks mate
some nice fish there smash

Smash, I just heard of the tunnels of Guernsey.
You ever been?
Iv never been to be honest but I can look into it

Cherbourg

❤️❤️ thanks for watching
the hooks they are using are called sandeel V2 if someone wondered
don't think so
Do these guys do charters as well?
No they don’t , they just fish
Awesome
Great video. How did the pro’s rig up their lures?
Running ledger with a long boom and 3 lures that are a fathom apart 👍
Jay was that roscoff ?? Been there many times and the casinos great 😊
We landed in Cherbourg there’s casinos there mate
I assume your “magic Chum” was a few lung-fulls of Smash’s breakfast!
Yup 😂💪 the fish was rolling in after that 😂
MSC stands for Mediterranean Shipping Company. It's one of the worlds biggest shipping companies.

on the charter boats, most dont have ice so they run sea water through the catch to keep cool
It's March
Wow! How is a commercial boat like that operating on just rods?
Lots and lots of fish lol
i'm guessing Cherbourg?
Yeah 👍
I enjoy watching sustainable fishing but annoying to think in the Irish sea there's a trawler hoovering thousands of tons of fish

Pohl farms woodturner
What part of France was that? St Malo?
Cherbourg
Y sell the fish at the French side buddy,, do they pay more surly the extra fuel to get there and back would eat the profit
Guernsey don’t want as much as the lads catch , also France pays way more almost double so it’s well worth it to them
