Alright, alright. Just let me tour the country four times, recruit donnel, maybe pick up my laundry, fight tons of risen and do some shopping first.

+Foxbat To be fair, FE8 (kinda) did that too... Honestly, I see no reason to diss Gameplay and Story Segregation, just because most FE games didn't do it (and instead had a constantly running plot) does not mean it's a bad gameplay element. Even if I do think the Children being scattered all over Akaneia and the Valm continent looks silly (I just pretend they SOMEHOW got recruited during the Valm campaign proper), I blame that more and structure (well, and the Valm arc being so short because said continent is only about half the size of Akaneia...)

I just think it could've been handled better. Doing something like the 4 part PoR mission. I just didnt see a reason for the climax of the arc to be so divided. (Unless we're talking end game grima fight then that makes sense since once you beat it, the game "ends").
I didn't really mind the whole children throughout valm thing. I mean it sorta made sense and atleast it went with the plot unlike some game *cough cough* fates *cough cough* but yeah you're right in that it's mostly in fault of the structure.
Foxbat Fair enough... I can understand that sort of criticism. Hells, goodness knows that I think there's a chapter missing between Chapters 10 and 11 (if only to let one actually develop the well-written Supports between Chrom and Olivia more directly), and let's not forget how there was VERY little variety in Chapter objectives (basically just "route enemy" or "defeat commander" - where did all the "seize the gate/throne" missions go to?)
"Fates" having the children again I can understand, and I think they aren't bad characters... but couldn't they have come up with a MUCH less stupid explanation for their presence?

You can turn ludicrous every single FE plot by doing a review like that. As much as some people want to trashtalk newer FE games, no game ever had a perfect plot ^^
It bothers me so much that Mustafa wasn't recruitable in anyway. It makes TOO much sense to recruit him. He agrees with Chrom's cause, He's a base class beserker (A class that no other character can have without class change) and support conversations imply he has a close bond with Henry. What the fuck? You bring back The fucking Filler arc villain before you bring back Mustafa? Even Cervantes had more character.
Would have been a better choice than Aversa, and Walhart.

Oh wait, Henry had a relationship with him? Kinda wish they gave you an option to let Mustafa join your army, like with Shura. Maybe if you decided to kill him, Henry wouldn't join you either because he was close to Mustafa and would want revenge.
To be fair, whatever Chrom's weaknesses as a hero are, at least he never loses the Falchion like certain Lords named Marth.
... Seriously, man, I spent the whole of your first adventure looking for the damn thing and in the sequel you just magically let it slip from your fingers? Are you some kind of distance ancestor to Samus Aran? >_>
In fairness, Marth didn't lose the Falchion in Shadow Dragon. That was his dad's fault.

It's like every single character took Stupid Pills between games and just decided to let the extremely useful weapons of evil slaying just vanish
Ike's a lowly mercenary and even he only gives up the Ragnell because it's a national treasure of Begnion, and later just gets it back permanently as payment for his services. Considering the Falchion was essentially a national treasure of Altea, Marth really dropped the fucking ball on that one.
C. Patterson Ike is a noble (technically). Greil=Sir Gawain of Daein, and knights are minor nobility. he just had a far different upbringing than most FE protagonists.
Quite the technicality, though. As far as pretty much all of Tellius is concerned, Ike's just a commoner.
Grima may be a terrible villain, but I (am the only person to ever say this) will admit that he has a pretty sweet artistic design.
Nothing quite beats the look of a six-feather-winged centipede-dragon with six read beady eyes and gigantic horns.
(And before anyone argues, there has been worse in the past. Duma looks like, and I will quote, "All the animals of a zoo got pulled inside out from their assholes and stapled together.")
Pretty much the only amazing thing about our giant dragon villain.

Fans of the older Fire Emblem games: "Awakening is awful, Fates will be awful!!......but I am still going buy it and play it for hours and hours."
My first game was Awakening soully for the reason that I played Pokemon Conquest and recognized the gameplay. I think Awakening was alright, but the story, and pretty much everything about the characters could be changed.
My first FE game was Awakening, and I have about 70+ hours in it, but my favorite FE game is Sacred Stones. The story in Awakening may have not been the best, but the gameplay got me hook to the series, like many others.
Dmesser Yeah, in my lifetime I've put a couple hundred hours into Awakening. :p
Full disclosure, Awakening was my first FE game, but I was familiar with the series before that, and am acutely aware that it is not a representation of what the series had been up to that point. Also I have sunk well over 600 hours into it, and I don't regret a single minute of it.
Awakening definitely has its advantages over other games in the franchise.

+Ghast Ation I was OK with this video until you started digging into "canon" marriage options with Sumia because it opened a huge can of worms in a few of my miiverse posts in the past. I didn't find the Valmese Arc hard to follow at all and actually enjoyed it. Despite a few plot holes the story progressed fairly quickly but you could have bashed it harsher than you did so I'm glad you held back. For the record I always marry Cordelia and then have Morgan marry Owain who has Lon'qu as a dad. Have you ever considered doing a plot review of some of the DLC? The Future Past missions and most of the hubba missions are actually fun to play through.
+Kyle Pessell Oh God I should've waited till the very end to comment. The feels are real. Mufasa best NPC with a single appearance of all time. Also I'd like to point out a mistake you made. First of all the children did not save their future. The future they came from is still in ruins they just altered this timeline to have a different future. This also means that their native selves or parents dying will have no effect on their own existence and if nothing changes they will all have two versions of themselves.

It's the biggest reason Robin is considered one of the best characters in the series. Without the supports and only going by the main campaign alone, which some people often do, Robin is easily one of the most bland and forgettable characters in the series, but going by DLC and the supports as well as outer media like Drama CDs, Robin turns out to be one of the most fleshed out and dynamic characters in the series (even having separate dialogues with some characters depending on gender further fleshing them out, like Tiki telling Male Robin he is partially Marth reincarnated, though not exact words), in my opinion, coming close to Ike. Personally, I think Awakening's biggest issue story-wise is that it tried to follow the story through Chrom's perspective too much, even after establishing Robin and Lucina's greater impact and importance to the Fire Emblem world, and this hampered the potential of the other characters' development in the game, even Lucina's character arc was glossed over in Awakening.
I mean, yeah, Robin's pretty fleshed out.
Then we get many supports like female Robin and Chrom, or feMU with Yarne.

As someone who has only played Awakening (I've also preordered Fates: Conquest), I definitely though the plot could've been much better. But, you know, I liked pretty much every character that wasn't Miriel, so that was nice. Support conversations were also great.

I agree with you. Awakening's most blatant weaknesses are the plot (UGGGGGGH) and the pairing system in my mind (which becomes waaaaay too OP but the game is SO hard without it).
However, the inheritance system is fascinating and some support conversations were gems!
But I watched a Path Of Radiance let's play and honestly, the story in Awakening is SO weak it's hard to believe it's the same franchise. Kinda like FF7 versus FF13.
+MadTahaney ff7 is not that great it really wouldn't even be in my top five, it just seems like an weird in between of the very ball bustingley challenging fe6 and the progressive and fun fe8.
I was using FF7 as a reference for the story, not the gameplay :) This game was really a revolution for the time and it set the tone for many JRPGs to come afterwards!

I interpreted Awakenings ending as Avatar is sent back in time to the start of the game and is stuck in an endless loop of killing Grima and restarting without remembering the previous timeline.
Would be cool, if not for the fact that grima's mark isn't on Robin's hand in te ending scene, except if you wanna go multiverse theory, but then we'll be here for some time lol

...Also, Sacred Stones had the best Generals by far, because they both could use swords and looked so fucking badass wielding them. The only general in the game cooler-looking than SS generals was the black knight.

Whenever I use Amelia, I give her a Devil Axe immediately to S rank Axes and get her to wield Garm. A General with 30 speed shouldn't exist.

In most of my runs, I trained both Gilliam and Amelia and used 2 generals, then had them block the south chokepoint in Chapter 19. Once Amelia got going, she was easily the more dodge-tank-y one, but both performed their duties admirably.
What I'm getting at is, why not both Gilliam AND Amelia? Maybe I like Generals too much.
And Snipers. Apparently everyone hates snipers. No clue why. They're great for counterkilling mages across walls and there's always at least one that's quick and dodgetanky, like Neimi, Rebecca, and Rolf.
I actually always use every bow user because I love Snipers Nomads and Rangers
As much as I love Fire Emblem Awakening I have to admit that the story was shit and the fact that the villains and Emmeryn can be recruited even though they die is ridiculous
Yeah I refrained from doing that on purpose, made no sense to me. It's also pretty weird that you can romance them. "Hey Chrom?" "Yes?" "You know the guy who tried to kill your sister?" "Yes, Gangrel" " I'm marrying him" "WtF Robin?!"

If you couldn't tell(I know that was hard because of how I wrote it) but I was joking. I knew who Philla was, it's just she didn't do anything important(and even if she did we never saw it) and pretty much exists to die. I would excuse her more if she had more of a role or, here's a novel idea, made her playable. But nope, she died. She was to unimportant and that's why I make the joke of not remembering who she was...

Actually in the after credits "History Books" text, some people do die depending on their relationships. Gangrel is the worst of them all, primarily because by the time you get to recruit him you'd likely to get married by then cuz Robin is the only support he has. His fate is sealed if you start with a male

Bro, Camus archetypes are THE WORST. EMOTIONALLY.
I won't exactly say that "Fire Emblem Awakening saved the franchise", it was overall lackluster compared to the previous games. As a player who actually began with Awakening, I found the game personally addicting. It was easy for me to get into and in terms of what I expected in a story, it was good (I normally like to see what Awakening distributed in it's game). I got to make my own avatar which helped me get a feeling that I was the one playing and living in the story, not just playing it as a person with an on-screen unit that was supposed to represent me.
However I will admit that the minor villains like Cervantes, Excellus, and to an extent Validar, were rather one sided and very boring after a repeat play or two. Walhart was honestly one of my favorite characters, even if his ambitions copied Emmeryn's, wanting to see peace for the world, he did it in a different manner. Same with Yen'fay, who swore allegiance to Walhart simply because it would protect his little sister from her own courage getting her executed.
However, as time went on after finishing Awakening and seeing Fates confirmed, and even the report where it had confirmed from the directors that if Awakening hadn't done well in sales, that it would be the end of the series, I was suspicious about what the older games were like. I started by watching SlimKirby's playthrough of Path of Radiance, and then Radiant Dawn, and I'm watching the same person play Sacred Stones as of this moment.
I can definitely see what people mean when they say Awakening ruined the series with how easy and one-sided it was. I will admit, Chrom was a lackluster character in his own right when compared to past protagonist lord units. Compared to Ike's strength, Chrom was a toddler. Compared to the loss Ike went through, Chrom's were minimal (sort of. Emmeryn's suicide was still no match toward Greil being killed by the Black Knight.)
Anyway, my point here is: Awakening may be one of the more lackluster games in the series, but I refuse to say it's the worst and I will concur that it might not have 'saved the franchise' but at least kept it on it's feet, even just barely. I've seen gameplay of Fates (thank you Linkmstr for taking such time and care to translate game script), and it is definitely an improvement from Awakening, and the losses the avatar goes through are much greater.
So, in conclusion: Hi. Anyway. Time to leave.

I loved awakening for two reasons:
1- dating sim
2- steroids everywhere.
Yep, story sucks, but at least there's playable mode so I can see all the cars before i actually do my real playthrough. and story sucks so much but it's my most played FE game.
This story is crap on a second listen, lol. Maybe the characters are why I love this game so much.
the ending to fire emblem awakening was the weakest part, especially since my guys were way over-leveled for the encounter and my boi kellam walked up to the final boss, untouchable & ready to dive bomb through his chest, and smacked him down and he continued to smack down the final boss until the player character could get there and do the cutscene. fighting on the back of a giant dragon should've been the highlight for being awesome, but it was, by far, the most hilarious thing to ever witness in a fire emblem game.
On Lunatic the Grima battle is aids. No one except Chrom and Lucina can even hurt the guy in any significant way. It's just dual striking.

I loved awakening but omg you are not wrong in the slightest lol. XD
The story in the nutshell:
-random amnesiac guy/girl wakes up and is accepted into a group of royal warriors with no questions asked
-girl in an insanely unconvincing man disguise comes from the future
-group fights off a medieval mage version of Darth Vader to protect a very nice queen
-Medieval Darth Vader respawns because why not and brings along a clone of the amnesiac
-queen gets kidnapped and killed by a clown-king dude

I will now rant about how Lucina and everyone else in Fire Emblem Awakening shouldn't technically exist. Lucina was born in the two year period when they weren't fighting any wars, and was left to be taken care of after the threat of Grima arose. She wouldn't have had any time to become as old as she was when she went back in time to save Chrom. The oldest she could have been was five to six, so she couldn't have stayed alive while Grima was taking over, because she would have been helpless. So really, the whole storyline is logically incorrect, and the future should have stayed the way it was, and everyone should technically be dead. I hope this wasn't to depressing.

Holy shit, I love this game and MAN the story has huge issues. In the end though, I can still look past them and enjoy the story, mostly because the characters are awesome to me (because the support system).

Despite the plot holes, and the Valm campaign. I do enjoy this story. Especially when you level up a few of the characters to be basically gods. Like Donnell and Cordelia.
It's six~seven years too late, but "within the moon" means roughly within the month. It's a lunar month, not a solar month (which we use), though. According to Wiki, a lunar month is around 29.53 days, so... Yeah, it basically just means that they're going to be executed in a month's time.

But why the hell would they avoid talking about it? Come to think of it, Corrin's debut in SSB4 tried to make a big deal of being a half-dragon, while in _Fates_ it just appears once and that's it.

I actually really like Awakening. Sure the story is a bit cliched but I still really like it and the characters are all really memorable and likable (okay, there are some exceptions coughcoughmirielcough) Honestly, if the pair up mechanics from Fates were put into Awakening, I would have no reason to play Fates. Fates just isn't all that fun to me, but the pair up system is undoubtedly better than Awakening's, imo.

As long as your not angry about grinding or pair up I'd love to hear why. The pair up is optinal just like grinding. If your mad about the children then guess what you don't have to recruit or use them.

The designers obviously did not balance the system, with certain bonuses compiled with supports making well-trained characters nearly invincible. From a series perspective, replacing the rescue command with an entirely positive system in the pair-up is a horrible decision. Using rescue provided players with a risk versus reward, as vulnerable units could be saved, but at the risk of endangering their rescuers with their decreased stats. Removing this risk versus reward the rescue command established helps to ease the difficulty of the game and less the fulfiling experience of the game overall. Another example would be the supports, which all for some bizarre reason rely on comedy. None of the characters seem believable that they are soldiers, concerning themselves rather with petty events such as apprehension about talking to woman and remembering each others' birthdays. Compared to the serious and character developing supports of the past with such as Raven and Lucius, Lugh and Milady, and other strong examples, the Awakening supports come off as disappointing and irrevlevant to the conflict at hand. May I go on? The list continues lol.
As long as you don't complain about grinding I'm okay. It pisses me off when people complain about OPTINAL BATTLES. Also I have my own problems like removing Caviliers extra move after attacking or Nah and Inigo's/ Morgan F and Yarne's supports. Also I don't mind comedy supports but I fell they should have had a better balance of comedic and serious. Also the pair up system was way to OP. Thankfully they fixed the pair up system in fates. (From what I've seen it looks much better.)

Awakening is like the sao of anime. Terrible, cliche, and unoriginal writing but everyone loves it anyway bc it was their first one/ gate way to fe/anime creating nastalgia. Although other parts of the game were great, and it did save the franchise. Not bc im a fanboy but bc if it wasnt popular it would have been the last game.

You know the sad thing is the characters all have unique and hardly explored backgrounds that can make their characters. The characters are actually really good in concept, but the story and writing was just awful and it missed many opportunities for them to become more complex.
Chrom could have been more fleshed out by further opening more to what was told according to the manga and the drama CDs. Also, he should definitely be more open and direct with his Army of Shepherds than he was in Awakening, where he couldn't even have small support conversations with over 60% of them, and being the type of leader he strives to be with this issue makes no sense.
Robin could have had his/her memory issues better explored and showed that Robin's "memory loss" is not what it seems, but is actually Robin's PTSD from his/her father's constant abuse and Robin's fears of becoming something he/she refuses to become. Also, the sad thing about Robin is that Robin's story and character development is seen not through the actual vanilla story itself, which really ruins the aesthetic of growth for the avatar along with the mystery, but only during the Support Conversations and the DLC (which could be debated to be considered filler or non-canon) tailored to the character, so for those who do not really care for the supports or do not get into the DLC, like myself, Robin can seems as a complete letdown at face value, and being overshadowed by Chrom even during his "sacrifice".
Lucina's character arc died as soon as she revealed herself to her father. Another issue I personally had was that with her introduction, it does ruin the children of the story because she's supposed to be the absolute oldest one yet everyone else seems to be the same age as her, which implies that everyone in the Shepherds sort of shacked up either during or slightly after the end of the Grima War, which almost makes this perspective as bad as the Deeprealm explanation of Fates. Sure, Lucina was still active in the story, but she wasn't nearly as important to the grand scheme of the adventure and ended up becoming a third wheel to Chrom and Robin.
I could go on and on.
I wont waste my time with this series it had its time but it's dead.

Argh I wish Awakening allowed you to recruit Yenfay with Say’ri like how the gba games let you recruit certain enemies with certain characters. And it would even make sense too because since he’s “trying to protect his country and sister”, he soon realizes that he can join with Say’ri and the Shepards to defeat the blackmailers.

I enjoy FE: Awakening. It’s the game that got me into FE and my second favorite of the few games of the series that I have played (Echoes blew my socks off when I first played it). It also introduced Robin, a total badass when it comes to usefulness and versatility (he still falls short to Alm, though; that guy is the epitome of badass). However, hearing you tear into the game in such a blunt fashion just cracked me up! Props to you, Ghast Station. I’m looking forward to enjoying more of your content.

She was nigh unbearably boring in her own story in FE7(thank god for Sain making the early game bearable), though I understand she was kinda held back due to that being a tutorial... but the problem is that once we hit the actual main game of FE7, she's essentially pasted on. For all intents and purposes, Marcus and Oswin are bigger main characters than Lyn who is barely even there to do anything in the Eliwood/Hector mode(She's really just hanging out to the side).
+Bösil I'll agree that Lyn's relevance to the story leaves after her story. I quite enjoy Lyndis herself actually. She's badass. Even though she has little time to shine and little personality, Chrom had almost no character or personality. Yeah he's relevant, but that doesn't mean his supports made him an interesting/good character.

+NightaYuu That's because it was meant to be a shield(if I'm remembering correctly a bigger FE fan can feel free to correct me on this). The Emblem as well as the Falchion were made from Naga's fangs back when she was a dragon in the hopes of stopping the Earth dragons who were basically destroying everything. Basically it was used as a seal(hence the name shield of seals) for the rouge earth dragons. Marth later used the shield to stop his villein Medeus and it even gave him a stat boost; and yes the Emblem was an in-game item back in the day. Actually what's even more funny is that in FE1/11 it was basically a lockpick for Marth basically turning him into a thief without actually turning into a thief. Now you can question why they used it as a lockpick instead of a shield(again if I did miss anything I'm sure someone will correct this, otherwise don't quote this word for word)

+Blue Fire The name Fire emblem is actually just a title given to objects of great power, not just the Shield of Seals. In Ike's games it was a medallion holding the trapped spirit of a goddess, and in another game it was only just the Family crest to a noble family. The Fire Emblem in Fates comes from the same world as the Shield of Seals, but Fates happens looooooong before even Marth's game so its possible the Shield of Seals and the Falchion weren't even created by Naga yet.

+ghast station That's the issue though. FE4 is Jugdral, not Archanea. The two are in separate realities. Awakening is generations after Marth's games, which are Archanea, not Jugdral. Jugdral is where Sigurd/Celice/Leaf are from.

Are you sure? I thought I read somewhere that each continent exists in it's own reality. That is why there are multiple incarnations of the Fire Emblem. It's a shield in the games related to Marth, a gemstone on Elibe, Lehran's Medallion on Tellius, etc.
