I just finished it a couple of hours ago and I really enjoyed it to be perfectly candid. Definitely an underrated classic on the Famicom! It may not be similar in most ways to the rest of the games in the series, but I attribute that to the Zelda II effect, where there was no precedent yet of how the entire series framework was supposed to be laid out. Sure, there were some frustrating moments, but overall I thought that it was a fun experience, ESPECIALLY for an 8-bit strategy RPG.
Its almost shocking how much story and dialogue is added to Echoes yet all of it can still easily be summed up with this video.
Except you'd need to add to the list of things that Rudolph did for his masterplan how Rudolf used his nephew to cope with giving away his son and then caused berkut to get a huge mental breakdown.

iirc, the volcano mission in Awakening was originally called Duma's Remains in Japan. Buuuuut... America dropped the ball on that reference.

they reference an unnamed entity at that point of the game. it actually is a way cooler way to connect to tne valentian plot,duma was such a dick after his degeneration that he was literally forgotten by the world after his religion stopped existing.

+ghast station I may be wrong in this, but Doma's exclusion in Awakening was a localization F-up, and the Demon's Ingle location in Awakening is actually name after Doma in Japan. The more you know I guess.

something im curious about. They said that the game took inspiration, but not that the game would be a direct remake. Could that mean part of the story could be...altered? (god if they add the kid function again i will fking lose my mind)
It's a remake things are going to be altered. As Mangs pointed out, so far it seems near identical. Overall, I understand your sentiment. (If you hate yourself go look at the comment section of any video about Echoes on channels such as IGN and Game Trailers )

Shadows of Valentia did fix some of the plot issues, it made rudolfs motive a bit more understandable at the very least.
Sad fact; most people who say justplayGaiden have not themselves played gaiden.

Just a few pointers about Gaiden's plot worth mentioning:
- So apparently Duma is suppose to be some sort of god of darkness, whereas Mila is his polar opposite as the goddess of light
- Valentina is later renamed Valm (based off Alm) prior to Fire Emblem Awakening (the continent Lon'qu, Virion and Say'ri come from)
- It's NEVER explained what Camus or the Whitewing sisters are doing in Valentina
- Alm and Cecilia may be cousins since they both refer to Mycen as their grandfather
- Rudolf's actual plan was to represent some warrior of darkness of a prophecy that Alm fulfills by killing him in order to stop Duma (which ironically involved aiding him massacre the same people he's trying to save)
- Robin is useless, so I never made any promise to protect Grey from a lifetime of alcoholism, plus Clive and Teeta have a more tragic ending if their lover perishes
- Zeke becomes Sirius after the events of Gaiden
Why weren't you supposed to let watermelon guy die, and why was he robin 1.0 as this game seems to balanced for robin to be allowed to exist.

1) He's named Robin and as a villager he has the option to promote into either a mage, archer, mage, soldier or a mercenary. The only problem though is that he's severely outclassed by other units of the same class in terms of stats including both fellow villagers Cliff and Grey.
2) Killing Grey will alter Grey's ending in which he suffers from a case of severe depression and is said to "drown himself in alcohol every day."
The Whitewings are there because Est got kidnapped by Valentian pirates...somehow.

I think the analogy is that Intelligent Systems has always wanted to remake Gaiden, with the past 2 games teasing at it, where Echos is the full package that they wanted to deliver.
i think the biggest hints to it was the DLC of fates/awakening. Dread Fighter being a staple of Gaiden was in both games. Witch also being a Gaiden Class, The Ballistician class in a way was a nod to archers having long range as well as being male only which is what archers were in Gaiden o.o . a Villager class in both games too. its pretty interesting how many nods to Gaiden they were making. Hopefully all the marriage stuff and 2nd gen was a nod to a remake of FE4 ;o
Plus the fact that in Smash they randomly put in a gaiden remix track

At least we got them in Awakening.
I'm playing Echoes (the remake of Gaiden), and Nuibaba is this "mighty mighty" (cleavage down to whatever) lady (she has a good introduction although). I like the original design a bit better. (One, Fire Emblem, stop making female characters either chaste as hell OR look like they stepped out of an S&M dungeon for a smoke.)
For someone who doesn't like the FE series, I like how simple this game is (no weapon triangle, no kids, but just having the support system). This is the one redeeming game in the FE series. Plus the story is simple. Alm and Celica go slap a God down.
But Fire Emblem Fates is Fire Emblem 2!

Fire Emblem Gaiden was my first game. I'll always love it, even if everyone else hates it.

I do believe that the "Gods" are just Dragons, like Naga and such. Duma looks like a dragon, the only thing is he's not completely revived, so he's sort of "melting" and stuff. Ya dig?
Started Gaiden and lost all my data in part 2 and thought "Well I can't be fucked playing through this game anymore, old UI does not sit well with me."
But since Ghast is always right I guess I have no choice

Well, Echoes is out and I've gotta say... This video is still super accurate, from everything from the plot to the weird ass gameplay and dialogue choices. I'm almost convinced that IS based the plot of Echoes off of this rather than Gaiden itself

Actually this is a really well done video, maybe my favourite plot review.
Gaiden was technically the first fire emblem I played. I had an emulator with a bunch of different ROMs on it so I tried it out. I got annoyed by everyone dancing on the battle field. First one I actually paid attention to was Sacred stones since I was a 3DS Sucke- I mean, Ambassador.
And now they're making a remake and I can't fucking wait

What a legend. That was glorious. I actually never played Gaiden, but I watched a full play through of it on another channel. You missed a couple interesting points, like finding Noma in a wall for no apparent F'ing reason.

Yeah Rudolf's plan is literally psycho.
Honestly IS did a great job fixing his master plan to make more sense in SoV.
I think Duma is something like a minor god, kind of like in Greek mythology you had Zeus who ruled and fathered over the gods, but the gods under him still had divine powers. In this case Zeus would be Naga, I guess?

My strategy for the dracozombie maps is just send Clair into the direct middle and watch the carnage.

If he is dead, Gray in the epilogue falls into depression and becomes and alcholic. Gaiden has some pretty dark alternate epilogues.
