- Edible birds’ nests have traditionally been produced in Southeast Asia. Asian farmers construct buildings for swiftlets and harvest their nests. Edible birds’ nests farming does not directly degrade forest resources and is therefore considered a sustainable means of production, whereas the expansion of other agricultural activities often relies on the degradation of natural resources.
In today's video I will introduce this successful and humane farming model.

@@freedomunltd Do what? Give them artificial breeding grounds. The birds in the artificial breeding houses are protected. They have no natural enemies. They are kept safe. Unlike the one's who breed in natural caves. They only harvest the nest when they are done with it. They have actually given the birds more space to flourish. Many of these birds wouldn't be here if not for the breeders. Those natural caves are full. So the farmers are creating more habitat for them.
It's a symbiotic relationship. The birds get space and protection and the people get their discarded nest after they are done with them. It's beneficial to both sides. It would be a different story if the breeders were displacing the birds but they aren't.

There is a reason that the nests are made high on the walls and ceilings in the caves....to protect their babies. Then came humans.
If you had actually listened to/watched the documentary before facerolling your keyboard, they only harvest *empty* nests. i.e. the chicks have fledged already... 🙄

They are free. In fact, those swiflet houses are habitats for them to breed. They ONLY harvest the empty nests after the chicks have fully fledge and flown.

You said it is believed to be nutritious. Is it nutritious? Has an analysis been done to determine what the nutrients are? What is the natural diet of these birds? How are the nests used in cooking? You said small parts are not wasted and are made into a soup. How are full nests prepared? Since you take care after cleaning and disinfecting to put them back into their original shape I'm thinking the actual nest is like a vessel to hold other foods/ingredients when being prepared for consumption. It would've been helpful to see one or two examples of the food. When not living in nests where do these birds live?
It's great to see that companies have turned to farming the nests instead of going into their natural environment and possibly hurting it.

We do that to any animal thay has value. Silk being the cocoon of the silk moth, killing that moth's chance. They're often bred for this purpose and if humans protect the area, and only harvest the nest after new a fletched, then it doesn't even harm the birds and helps them by allowing them the space and safety the humans provide to breed and flourish as a species.
It's basically farmed ...relax
