HONESTLY? The slowdown on SSD upon choosing the base models should've been disclosed upon purchase (like, leaving a footnote upon checkout.)
Apple should've at least be transparent and state these changes on the customers. But out of all things, I do not expect transparency on an arrogant Apple. Heck, they even STOPPED disclosing read/write speeds on their storage anymore that's outside of their Mac Pro. lineup.
The chip shortage may probably have played a role into this, but on the case of SSDs it's much more affordable now than recent (and I'm not even mentioning that exorbitant Apple Tax they incur on those options.)
The larger reason? Lower manufacturing costs and raising prices to gain more profit margins. Basically the same tactic, and the reason why iPhones began to be more and more and more expensive despite the manufacturing costs quoted as lower than previous iterations.
TL;DR: Profit. Because Apple can.
And no matter how much we complain about their prices (and Apple cheapening out on features) at the end of the day, people will still buy it for that brand name alone.
Bro your videos are improving. Raise your front camera little high it looks like you’re looking down plus include more medium and close shots from main front camera not only wide shots. When using 2nd camera or B roll be consistent looking at main camera. Also add smooth zoom when making a point about something specific. I see you use teleprompter but it looks natural the way you speak!

The slow SSDs in the M2 Macs were disappointing, but the slow SSDs in the M2 Pro/Max Macs are straight up insulting! These are "PRO" machines, Apple has no excuse for saving two bucks on the SSD!
You gotta understand apple is not ferrari and must cut BOM to save money to please shareholders.
Ferrari can use the best tech and materials because their customers can pay.

Base M2 pro is 10-core Cpu and its performance is slightly better than M1 pro 10-core which it cost was 200$ more.

As far as I know Apple has not acknowledged this new configuration and/or the slower read/write speed while commanding the same price of 200$ for 256 GB which is about 4-5 times higher than the market price for this size of SSD. Moreover, once you bought it you would have to live with it since Apple does not allow for any change in the configuration. I think that this is why Apple did it. It is win-win for Apple: If you do not like your configuration you would have to sell and buy again with more RAM and/or a bigger SSD. It is very sad that one of the most valuable companies in the world behaves as a cheep store where you have to ask 100 times to be sure that you are paying for the product you were told you were getting. Another point is that Apple and others would continue behaving like that if they are not told that this is unacceptable, i.e., it does not matter if one would or would not notice the difference because of that he/she received/paid not the same product that was advertised.
The SSD speeds wouldn't be an issue at all really if the cost to upgrade wasn't so high. It's £200 just for a measly extra 512gb and if its extra RAM you want, apple are charging £400 to double your 16Gb to 32... Madness.

The answer is easy don t buy the m2 chip most people won t see the difference anyway and you save money.
I've got the base model M2 MacBook Air, and I knew going in that about the SSD speed issue. Since the MBA is my travel device and I have a Mac desktop for the heavy lifting it hasn't been an issue for me (i.e., no swap filing so far).

Got the MBA m2 with 16gb of ram after knowing abt the slow SSD. So far Ive only seen macOS use swap once. I always leave abt a dozen apps opened including 2 browsers with multiple tabs on each and overall performance has been smooth. So between the ram and the SSD upgrade, I'd recommend the ram.
Well said. Many YT "experts" have been saying to update 256GB to 512GB, but they are missing the point; the lack of RAM slows the system, not the SSD. We can always use an external SSD if you need more storage, but RAM is not upgradeable.
Exactly! I went from Intel 2020 MacBook Air and went straight to the M2 MacBook Air 15 inch with 24GB Ram and 256 SSD storage and its a definite powerhouse! Especially with the educational discount!

@@codewithsoham Definitely get the 16gb option. The SSD is not slow enough to be noticeable. It is only a problem when you, for example, export a long video in premiere pro or when you transfer gigabytes of data from the internal SSD to another drive. If you need more storage, it is way cheaper to get an external thunderbolt SSD enclosure and a gen 3 SSD than upgrading the internal SSD.
two reasons - one, to bring the base model in at a lower price point, given than most people going for this base model aren't likely to be audio or video pros - and for whom the base price is key - second (smaller reason) , last year there was still a shortage of ssd chips - so putting in a single chip rather than 2 helped Apple guarantee they could bring the new M2 to market on time and in sufficient quantities.
Hi guys, I purchased the m1 pro a year ago with 1tb 16gb ram and yesterday upgraded to m2 max with 1tb and 32gb ram hoping it would make my editing on premiere pro better. The conclusion: I'd avoid the upgrade. I feel my m1 pro did a similar job, I was hoping it would make scrubbing on the timeline better but didn't do much. really dissapointed in Apple.

Certainly RAM should be upgraded, but doesn’t adding an external SSD with faster than onboard read/write speeds resolve this situation? Great video, as always!
If you get a Thunderbolt enclosure, most portable running USB C are going to be slower than even the 256GB.
Apple should (imo) have released an actively cooled MacBook Air M2 alongside the passively cooled one instead of a MacBook Pro 13" M2. Because many people think the actively cooled one will be much better and not overheat, it may increase the amount of money apple makes, especially since the MBA has the new design
I think Apple want to differentiate the Air from the Pro via the ports and active cooling, otherwise the price would go up.
The Air is targeted at those that do not need a fan. I am surprised that this basic premise is not understood by consumers? Even on release they interviewed the boss and he stated that the Air is NOT for sustained loads. That is why they kept the MB Pro 13 M2. I mean this is clear and when people do these stupid sustained workloads and slap Apple down, they are just clickbaiting Apple as it is easy money. I get your point of having a fan assisted Air, but the MB Pro 13 M3 is due for a redesign in 2023 so that will be similar to the Air but with fans. Apple slowly releases new models over 2-3 years so that they can market the new design. Doing them at the same time is poor business.
It has no reason for cooling. It does not even get warm. I use mine for music production and not one single problem at all.
Does anyone have stats on upgrading up to perhaps the 2TB SSD in either the Mac Mini or M2 MacBook Pros? Just would not be happy if those kind of upgrades 9price wise) showed a slowdown because of using a single chip?
Maybe they are phasing out those 256 storage options (and 512 for pro line up which I assume use different chips). They dont want to buy more of the 128 resp 256 chips they wont have use for in the future. Cool edit btw :D

I've got an M1 MAX pro (16 inch) almost fully loaded, but also, and I'm using it right now, an M2 with 16 gigs and 256GB. What I use it for, and that's not just web browsing and doing my taxes, it's a damn fine laptop. I've not had any trouble so far, yes I can notice the drive isn't that fast but I'm not too worried about it.

Nothing! Obviously it will void your warranty, and it’s a very difficult process requiring specific knowledge and tools, but I’ve seen it done before.

3:19 Just slight mistake in terminology here. Basically, swap uses some part of your hard disk (or ssd) into an extended memory. So if you open too many processes, then memory used by dormant processes will be moved to ssd. So the movement is between the physical memory and secondary disk (HDD or SSD).
Virtual memory is a memory abstraction used by the operating system to give processes the illusion that they have exclusive right to use the entire physical memory in a system.

Normally I wouldn’t care about a slower SSD, however, for Apple silicon systems it DOES matter how fast your internal storage is because of swap memory, like mentioned already on the video, especially considering modern applications simply requiere more RAM and RAM is at a premium in this situation, both because it costs an unreasonable amount of money to upgrade from a base model, but also because this is SHARED memory with the GPU, which means the OS has even LESS memory available as it has to share it.
Anyway, I guess we can only dream of Apple being cheap and giving their “Pro” models more pro specs next time.
In benchmarks your theory didn’t play out. Look at MaxTech channel comparing base model 14” M1 Pro vs M2 pro. The base model M2 pro with slower SSD was faster in every single test but one. Also the “slower” SSD is faster for small random reads and writes. This TH-camr only discussed sequential burst speeds, which is actually less important for most common tasks.

@@Teluric2 What are you talking about? MaxTech has been incredibly critical of Apple about this issue and fueling and exploiting the outrage for clicks/views at every chance they get. Clearly you haven’t even watched their videos about the topic. In any event, here is what their tests found:
-Disk Speed Sequential test: New base models slower
-Disk Speed Random test: New base models faster
-Geekbench: New base models 20% faster
-Web browsing: New base models 14% faster
-Figma web design: New base models 20% faster
-Cinebench: New base models 23% faster
-3dmark: New base models 22% faster
-GFXBench 1440p: New base models 25% faster
-GFXBench 4K: New base models 24% faster
-Blender: New base models 45% faster
-Lightroom: New base models faster - “Even though the SSDs are slower, it was 3 seconds faster”
-4K HEVC Encoding: No difference - “Slower” SSD did not have any performance impact
-4K ProRes Raw: New base models faster - “What if we make it harder”. “It looks like the M2 Pro is still faster”
So clearly it has very little impact for most tasks, as in most tasks over 3000 MB/s is more than enough speed, and not the limiting factor to performance (CPU, GPU, RAM or otherwise is)
So does the 1tb ssd option have a single ssd or 2 512’s?
The bigger issue than just the read/write speeds is that since the nand chips are soldered, having less of them decreases the lifespan of the chip and ur computer as a whole. Its not only increasing profit margins, but will force customers to upgrade their computers sooner, cus once the ssd goes up, ur whole computer is shot. Even if you can find a tech who is willing to do the solder job, theres no way to purchase a brand new nand chip for the macs specific bga, so youd have to use a refurbished nand chip. This whole situation is really ugly and disappointing.
Larger NAND chips have longer lifespans though. One 256GB SSD has a longer lifespan than two 128GB SSDs, despite the former being the slower configuration. This shouldn't really be a concern however, as you're more likely to replace one of these computers years before their SSDs would fail.

SLC Chips are used in very high end ssd like memblaze.
You dont know how many M1 macs are dead because faulty SSD. Secondary storage ssd can last more but not system ssd

I have an mac air M2 and it has 2 Nand chips. Is this maybe just for the US? I'm in Canada.
So for the base m2 mac mini, would upgrading to 16gb ram solve the slow ssd speed during photo/video editing. But not make much of a difference when transferring files.
I know the 4tb drive is slower than the 1tb and 2 tb drives and the 512 is the slowest but what are the speeds of the different drives?
This is a great video, I am about to buy a new Macbook and is a big deal for me since I haven't bought a new one since i7 2014, but I don't understand why I have to pay $200 extra just for 256Gb of SSD extra. I decided to upgrade the ram instead and get 16gb Ram, I have a few external SSD and I hope I can just be ok with that.

I wouldn’t bother wasting money on that upgrade. It’s an Air so GPU performance is limited by no fans.
It is obviously disturbing that Apple would cheap out to this level with their mountains of money.
But, for those of us who use a laptop with a SATA SSD, the speeds on the M2 MacBooks would be a significant increase! My laptop's SSD can only do 550MB/s read and write and I don't feel as if it is slow
A Seagate FireCUDA 530 can match those Mac Silicon SSD speeds and, a bonus: the NVMe SSDs are removable.
My thoughts exactly, it is slower... but just in comparison, for everyday use it is enough.

Talking about the SSD. I am transitioning from a imac 2015 4 tb ssd to a mac studio m2. Is it recommendable to go for a 1 tb and store my projects or maybe part (music/movies) or even the whole home folder on an external SSD? Thanks for any advice or link!
Get as big a SSD as you can afford. 1TB is usually a good minimum for a desktop but try to stretch to 2TB if you can. Makes it easier to store large apps and essential files and not worry about not enough SSD space.

Glad i ordered the 1TB M2 Pro. Blackmagic results: 2TB file = 6455.7 read, and 4942.4 write.. It's crazy fast, way faster than ordinary users would ever need to be honest.

Apple felt that it made the M1 version too good to upgrade noticeably. By bringing down the basic version in the M2, they can justify charging consumers a higher premium for the upgrades and entice you as well for the same to begin with. Besides, there is much for the retail computer world to improve aside from the future of artificial intelligence (AI).

I do not understand why you so gentle with this. Why should you care what Apple thinks/feels? Apple sold you an inferior product for the price of the superior one that you were reasonably expecting.

But they chose not to, because they thought they can get away with it. (Like, they realized later on that they made some M1 silicon specs slightly overpowered.) Apple has this absolutely smug attitude for years (and they only stopped doing so when they got caught. Remember the "butterfly keyboard" disaster, the melting MacBook Airs of Intel past, or the iPhone "batterygate"?) and they'll continue to do so for years. This same attitude of non-disclosure and overcharging (yes they overcharge for SSD and memory for nearly a decade) will continue, as they see themselves as a luxury brand.
Going back to the SSD cheapening, because majority of their market (yes even the "pros") won't notice the slowdown (until they use swap memory or transferring gigabytes of files or doing video/3D export.) Some of them won't even care about Cinebench or Geekbench scores either.
I still think part of the reason is heat. We know the processors are on basically the same nm process but clocked higher. Nothing has changed on the chassis. Each chip generates additional heat, by using less they are reducing the heat in closed system. Great video, nice explanations! I feel I can always recommend your channel to anyone and they will come away with knowledge rather than being confused.

I am hesitating between a Macbook air M1 256/16 and a M2 256/16. The price difference in my country is 84€. But I would use it for video editing and I don't really understand if the M1 would be much better because of its SSD speed, or not. For now, I think I'd go for the M2 to have updated design and magsafe... hoping that I won't make a mistake. If someone can give me its opinion that would be much appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Is it possible that 2 NAND chips in the faster (than M1) base trim M2 MacBook Pros caused a trade off in the way of hotter thermals and performance throttling too frequently?-and that possibly the solution was to change it to a single NAND chip for a slower traffic yet better overall user experience pertaining to battery performance, thermals, and noise ? i.e. slower swap performance but quieter and cooler, since most entry level MacBook Pro users might prefer quieter and cooler laptops for 95% of what they do over the extra performance they'd rarely benefit from here and there?
There is a sale on M2 Macbook Pro for 1700 AUD, 1100 USD... but hearing about the SSD problem makes me want to buy another machine.
Their prices for upgrades is a clear robbery in daylight… No upgradeability after purchase is also just in order to sell more units…. Use once computers and electronics.

@@phothewin6019 If you can only have one, then yes, if you do a lot of photo or editing work. You can use an external drive for storage.
@@andyH_England My workflow doesn't involve a lot of photo or editing work (though that is something that I would like to get into in the future as a hobby). I usually just have a lot of internet tabs open with a couple of applications (like Word) open as well. My only concern is with this slower SSD speed everyone is talking about. The 1TB upgrade should resolve that, right?
Hmm, the new macbook air 15” m2 I just purchased has double the speeds. I opened the back and it does indeed have 2 nands. This is the 512gb version, so it looks like they are now shipping with dual nand

Wait... I'm a video editor thinking of moving over to Mac but - i heard if the ssd fails - the Macbook Pro is toast because you can't get it swapped out. Is this true? So how do you avoid decaying the internal ssd... I assume you would invest in a external ssd and using TB to edit off that?

I had in plans to purchase Apple's MBP with M2 Pro cpu and 16GB of RAM combain with 512GB SSD storage. But, for now, regardless in that I need to pay more for 1TB of SSD - I used to multitasking and storage speed is important for me - I also need to wait way too long - in my situation time is more important than money - to get my configuration of MBP, because in my coutry (central europe) all MacBook's, exept base models, are out of stock. If I just could use in project other hardware and software than Apple's, I will purchase Dell without blinking of eye.
if it's storage issue I think you'll be fine with another 256gb sdcard (cuz MBP M2 has the port for the sdcard) or an external ssd if you don't mind bringing an acessory with you

I purchased 16.2 SL / 12C CPU/38C CPU / 64GB / 1TB/KB for college, where I have to use 2 monitors to do statistics and soon coding assignments. I used all the money I had and maxed out my credit card to buy what I thought was the best laptop in the known US world market; I felt it was worth the investment. So frustrating how sluggish it runs. I actually have to shut down the Mac to reboot it. I found your video, as I was seeking to find a way to defrag my new Mac. My husband bought a used Dell desktop refurbished computer, with a rebuilt 2011 processor core; and it runs faster and better when he has numerous programs open all at once, than this Mac M2. Apple proudly advertised you could have all manner of programs and websites open at once, per my experience, this had not proved true. I feel like Apple used the old bait and switch in advertising. I am so disappointed and frustrated. It doesn't make sense to advertise one thing and provide a less them stellar quality product to increase your sales temporarily; Wake-Up Apple, you are ruining your own outstanding reputation! It's like in the planet of the apes "man will make a desert of his home and yours." So Apple, you've ruin the quality of your own products and screw your own customer demographic, by cutting back on quality and lying to the consumer demographic who made you rich ~ I used to feel like no other computer can compare to an Apple, now not so much. How are you going to earn the trust of Apple fans again? The quality of your product has gone downhill! I invested all I had in a now inferior product. The touch pad makes a clicking sound, that you can't turn off. I wish I'd purchased a M1. The M2 MacBook Pro processor speed has been very disappointing.
Needing an external drive with a mbp > $3K is a dealbreaker. The whole point is portability. They obv have supply chain and production issues but are too lame to be honest about it.
Ive been waiting since 2015 for a decent MacBook to replace 2015 mbp retina. Id hate to buy the m2 mbp only to find a proper upgrade m3 becomes avail next mth. Who doesn’t multi-task?! Who doesnt want faster speeds on every task?! If all you wanted to do was surf the net and read email you wouldnt even be looking at a mbp!
Apple's first m1 only shipped with 8GB of RAM so fast SSD was much more important since its used the SSD as RAM (swap) in most cases. This was impressive for the showcase but didn't give people much reason to upgrade just for CPU tasks. Slower SSD + small RAM makes the whole system slower which makes the upgraded ones feel that much better.
I don't think this is exactly the case. Search for 8 vs 16 on M1 and at least 5 videos pop up on YT produced at the time when the M1 debuted (November 2020) debating the wisdom of 8 vs 16. Would those vids exist if there were no 16 GB available back then? It doesn't seem likely.
It also doesn't seem likely that Apple would restrict themselves to just 8 GB since the upgrade to 16 means another 200 clams for them out of our wallets. They want it all. Offering 16 was a no-brainer for them.

If you already bought your M2 macbook a2338 and you need more storage but youre stuck. You can come to me if you are in Pittsburgh and I can solder another 256 GB chip on to that empty bay. I have a few m2 donor boards. I charge $100 for the labor and $60 for the chip. However, the SSDs for the M2 a2338 are hard to come by. I have never bought an M1 a2338 and used that SSD, so I am not sure they are the same and compatible. It's too expensive to explore and try it out.
Has anyone tested the speed for the 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB versions? I thought the 4TB and 8TB were the fastest. Is this still true?
My solution is skip the M2 Air or Pro. I thought I was going to upgrade my current Intel MacBook Pro this year but now I’ll wait to see what Apple dies next. I don’t want a larger SSD as my main storage is my network Synology NAS. I’m happy to wait it out. I keep my Macs a long time so I have always waited until I’m happy with a new model. I’m patient.
Apple is not doing this to force upgrades. If they were, they’d have communicated that the drive was slower. Most people will have no idea that the base models are slower or why that’s the case, and most people won’t see videos like this until after the fact. It’s just supply chain stuff, much like the yields on the M2 chips.

I personally sometimes fail to understand the decisions/ moves Apple makes with some of their products😐.
Set up your own company if you think you can do better. Apple makes decisions based on survival and to make money for shareholders which is, by law, their prime objective. I suspect they spend millions on research to decide their business model and although you fail to agree or understand, there is very good reasons why they do what they do, though they are not infallible.

I know how Apple can rationalize this but I still can't get over how they ignore, in production, how stuff like this will go viral. Sure, it may not impact all their users but it impacts enough of us to internalize mistrust of Apple. Very, very bad PR. Hate this about Apple!
You will get longer use out of your Mac with more memory and larger, multi-NAND storage. I suggest this strategy for long-time Apple product owners: when Apple forces a decision to a higher price by leaving out features or performance, just delay your device upgrades. Instead of upgrading iPhone or Watch, AirPods, AppleTV, etc. under your usual timeline, delay the replacement, purchase refurbished/used from a 3rd party, or otherwise don't pay Apple until you can't wait any longer. In the case of M2 512GB MBP upgrades for memory and drive capacity, it will take some time for you to personally see the advantage of the strategy. But you will get the specs you likely need in an expensive primary device, and still have reasonably operable secondary devices. And yes, slower SSD, single NAND performance impacts many operations, including swap which makes an already poor situation (low memory) worse. That inevitably comes into play as your computer ages, software becomes more memory-intensive (it usually does), and you wait to upgrade your Mac.

As you said, upgrading to 1TB on the M2 means two 512GB chips, so twice the reading speed.

What do you mean by a 512GB version for the M2 Max? I just ordered one and the only floor version they had was a 1TB.
You can configure a 512GB M1/M2 Max.
@@CreatedTech I just checked via the apple store app on IOS devices and the browser version for US east coast. I only see a floor / base option of the default, 1TB as the original option.
I see nothing else to go lower too and now I feel paranoid that the SSD I got by default base option is dealing with performance issues like you’re saying.
Select the base model M1/M2 Pro. Then upgrade the SoC to the M1/M2 Max. You can configure it to have the Max chip and with only 512GB of storage. You're looking at the default M1/M2 Max option which starts at 1TB, but it is possible to configure with lower.

It's like the ram is $100 and $300 for the labor to solder it in....like a stealership!
The reason? The final product is so perfect in that way apple don't have competitors on this market. The cheapest M1 Pro it's too cheap for real value, and the most expensive it's actually the real value. I paid 2k Euro for M1 Pro, 10 Core CPU, 16GB ram, 1TB storage, and I come from an 5k Euro (min) custom build PC (windows). Both computers are really fast, BUT, what Mac delivery it's just amazing.. the OS, trackpad, display, ecosistem, efficiency, power management, battery life, speakers, DESIGN, applications, portability, instant on from standby.. and so many things... I have no words to explain... I feel like I lived into a lie until I found this beauty. Take for example just this minor shortcut "command + q"vs "alt+f4" (for quit applications) It's really easy to press command + q than alt+f4. and this is just a poor example. Aparently not so important... but apple knows everything it's important!
What about just getting the M1 macbooks for less money and get better performance? Problem solved.
I don't think it's important if you're going to notice it or not, or if you're just browsing the web is not going to affect you and probably not, but it's a brand new machine and quite expensive and it's slower than it's predecesor, that doesn't seem to be an upgrade. You're paying for something worse, I have a MacBook Pro 14 and honestly was thinking on upgrade in a couple of years, but after seeing how Apple is just making is computers worst in purpose, I'll just keep it for as long as I can and I'll be going back to windows.
It is faster if you buy the correct spec for what you do. If you constantly run into swap, then you have too little RAM. Swap is a bonus; you should rely on it. Even the M1 base model using swap is much slower than an M1 with 16GB of RAM. Ergo, buy extra RAM.

False. Both the 512 M2 mini and 512 M2 Pro mini are as fast or faster than any M1 mini ever was, at over 3000 MB/s. The 1TB and higher M2 Pro mini (not M2 regular) can even achieve over 6000, speeds which were never before possible in a mini as they did not have access to the M1 Pro architecture. The M2 and M2 pro minis are different architectures but both have a 512GB option. Sounds like you might be getting confused by that.

Owning a company which works in logistics and supply chains , post Covid, I would say almost certainly it has to do with the supply of compnents...worldwide.
