Britt Johnson & the Searchers: Defying All Odds

  • In October of 1864 Britton Johnson’s son was murdered and his wife and two surviving children were taken captive by a Kiowa War Party. Not willing to just sit back and hope for the best, Britt took matters into his own hands. Set out, alone, into Indian Territory. Determined to get his family back, one way or another. And believe it or not, he was successful. Unfortunately, he made some enemies along the way, a desperate savage foe who were just biding their time until they could catch up with Johnson once again. John Ford’s 1956 masterpiece starring John Wayne, The Searchers, is said to be inspired by Britt Johnson. #blackhistory #wildwest #history

    Britt Johnson might be the most courageous man to ever walk Texas, if not, he surely was one of them. As far of "The Searchers", it's doubtful that movie is even a dramatic telling of the historical facts of Britt's ventures but probably was one of many of the captive stories which did help inspire the author who wrote the novel which the movie is based on. Anyone who thought John Wayne could not act never saw this movie because the way he played a twisted man bent on revenge is up there with Bogart's distraught character from "The Treasure of Sierre Madre"... interesting fact, the last scene where Wayne's character shoulders his arm before walking away from the doorway was a gesture towards the then late actor Harry Carey which nobody on the set expected, especially Harry Carey Jr. his son who was in the movie on the set who broke down in tears along with others, one of those class moves which they said even moved the director John Ford who was known to be a hard ass on set

    About this video, "That which we are about to receive, we thank thee, O Lord." When I was a kid, the Searchers was not one of my favorite John Wayne movies but as I got older it became one of my favorite J.W. movies. I love the cast and the lines that came from that movie ( a lot more classic lines from it than from Unforgiven, "HAW, HAW, HAW!") One of my favorites is "Mount.....M-O-N-T-E, MOUNT!" I use that line a lot whenever we go on trail rides. Hank Worden did an awesome job in the Searchers and he is one of my favorite character actors, "My rocking chair, you promised me my rocking chair." Thanks for another great one.

  • @OffRampTourist
    @OffRampTourist 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Agreed about The Searchers. Much prefer Rio Bravo, The Big Trail, and Stagecoach if I want to watch Wayne.
    I even prefer one of his non-western early films, Seven Sinners, with the great Marlene Dietrich - who was also in the western Destry Rides Again with James Stewart and a whole bunch of wonderful character actors whose faces are better known than their names.
    I have watched and owned on disc The Searchers, and Unforgiven, and The Outlaw Josey Whales, and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence, but I eventually gave them away. Easy to appreciate but hard to watch, so I don't. I prefer listening to watching when it comes to horror and so 'hear' I am letting you do the hard work and appreciating your efforts.
    I grew up just north of the Red River and never heard of anything you covered in this episode.

However on this particular one there were a lot of f-bombs dropped and I was wanting to share this video with my children because of the harrowing story. And the great work you did on it. However I do not allow my children to use foul language and I do not use it around them. Although I agree with your sentiments wholeheartedly about the fear of children going missing. Thank you for the compliment. I would like to add that this channel is not intended for children. I applaud you for wanting to educate your children about history, but there are much better ways of doing so than exposing them to my content. The Old West, in particular, was an extremely violent place. In this episode that you're commenting on, people are brutally murdered and women are foully violated. The language I use, in my opinion, is nothing compared to having to explain to your kids what those Comanche and Kiowa did to their women captives. I would suggest taking them to the library and getting them some age appropriate learning material for now and not share adult only content from TH-cam with them.

Just like the movie version of "The Hunchback Of Notre Dame" the ending in the movie version of "The Searchers" is utterly different from the original novel. In the novels, both the gypsy girl and Ethan are killed. Also, I doubt any Comanche ever saw the Monument Valley in Utah where the movie was filmed. I guess it was more scenic-looking than Texas.

    Hey Josh, if you really believe Wayne’s best movie is The Shootist you’ve obviously never seen him as Singin’ Sandy in Riders of Destiny! Further, I would argue that Hondo, Red River and maybe The Cowboys stand as tall as The Shootist. That said - I LOVE your show and the way you do it! The little tangential side trips of pure fiction from time to time, the less than perfectly organized style and injecting your own opinions from time to time all keep things much more interesting! I heard you talking about wanting to clean up your act a bit. For my money, it needs to stay a little dirty and scruffy. What would The Rolling Stones or the Sex Pistols sound like all clean and shiny? I don’t even wanna think about it!

    I really doubt Searchers was based on Britt I live in young county and think the character in Lonesome Dove of Josh Deets was who McMurtry was thinking about since he grew in just north in Archer county

    You got a lot wrong here and makes me question why I will continue to listen. Best western is The Outlaw Josey Wales. Best collaboration between Ford and the Duke is the Quiet Man. Anyone who says otherwise is a greenhorn grass bellied loco side winder.

    You mentioned the Alamo and Custer at the Little Big Horn but the problem is that these people chose to be where they were and took the opposition lightly! The Mexican army was a battle hardened group of vetersn soldados and the Lakota and Cheyenne were warriors from boyhood. You go looking for a fight and get what you ask for and you take the consequences.

Now he has to fetch the wagon, load up the furniture, tools, and the like, and scadadle with his family and stay on the move. He says to tell you thanky

    I have no answers!! My family showed up sometime time in the “late” 1880’s or early 1900’s (there is a gap in our time line.) after hauling stone to the Capital(They were freighters.) My G.Grandfather was that freighter. He later settled in Proffitt Tx(young Co.). My father was born in his Grandfathers house in 1934 and rode horseback to the Proffitt Schoolhouse(perhaps a 1/2 mile North of Elm Creek)All of that to say that my VERY “blanco” father made it a HUGE deal to to ALWAYS stop at the Britt Johnson’s historical marker and read it to his children with Reverence in his voice. It resonated with us as our father was a proven war fighter with kills beyond counting. Britt was taught to us as the epitome of what a man should be.
