  • Wild Bill Hickok is one of the legendary figures of the Wild West, and his untimely murder at just 39-years of age remains one of the largest stories of the era.
    Offered by Rock Island Auction Company is the heavily documented Smith & Wesson No. 2 Old Army revolver that was owned and carried by Wild Bill Hickok during his brief time in Deadwood.
    He is documented to have owned one during his brief time in Deadwood, and numerous historians and authors state that he was carrying one when he was killed. Its provenance is solid, but a different question remains: is this the revolver Wild Bill was carrying that fateful day in the No. 10 saloon?
    0:46 - Hickok's life just before Deadwood
    1:19 - Hickok en route to Deadwood
    1:56 - Was Wild Bill a model citizen or troublemaker?
    2:58 - Premonitions of his own death
    3:35 - The day before Hickok's death
    4:08 - Dead Man's Hand
    6:34 - Will Bill Hickok's Smith & Wesson No. 2 Old Army revolver
    7:37 - Was he carrying this revolver when he died?
    9:17 - A poem for Wild Bill

    My Grandfather owned this exact model Smith & Wesson .32 caliber rimfire. One Saturday we took it to the local pistol range and fired CIL Canuck copper cased .32 rimfire long cartridges on it. These were smokeless loads only and the revolver shot well. Accuracy was poor due to severe barrel pitting.

    I hope that the Americans will "carry the torch of the Wild West" for a longtime!
    In present times the History seems to be, for some people, only a motive of shame and guilt, and something to be wiped out.
    The story of Wild Bill is known worldwide now, thanks to the HBO's "Deadwood", and it is incredible to see the S&W Thant belonged to the REAL Wild Bill!
    Hope the gun will stay in the USA.
    Or in the CSA, in the future :)

    The provenance of this pistol would have to be absolutely authenticated (by somebody other than RIAC) before I would even begin to believe that it was ever in his possession.
    If this is the same pistol that went to auction in 2013, the last owners got it as a "mysterious gift" in 1972 from the family that was at least the third party to allegedly gained possession of the gun from Hickok's effects. Curious how run of the mill pistols can acquire authentication when, in fact, chain of custody is sketchy at best, starting with the understanding that this pistol can't be attributed to Hickok other than by hearsay.

      What kind of 'records' are you hoping to find? A receipt from Acme Mercantile for a sale to "Bill" in Deadwood? A Pony Express delivery slip from Sears & Roebuck to Mr. Hickock's home address? You seek something that doesn't exist. I would argue that since the authenticity of this piece HAS NOT BEEN CHALLENGED IN OVER 50 YEARS speaks volumes. No other piece is in consideration. If there were several making claims, then, okay...but, to this day, there aren't any. That is why it sold at auction. Again.

    • @boydgrandy5769
      @boydgrandy5769 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mrfuriouser Somewhere, someone (say, S&W and the retail vendor who actually sold the pistol) has records that contain information such as serial number, point of sale, date of manufacture, the original owner, and shipping data. Receipts and letters can be used to identify change of ownership and custody of a firearm as well.
      That is how you establish provenance. Anything less than that is fairy tales and hokum.
      Unless this pistol has that kind of evidence to support the claim by the seller and RIA, I would certainly question its authenticity, and so should you.

    If this is the only known no.2 revolver attributed to Wild Bill during deadwood time, we can be pretty sure this is the one when he died, such a important revolver even back in the days, known to be Wild Bills revolver would have been saved and cherished, so the one he wore must be this one, otherwise it had been dokumented that there was two known to be in his ownership, THE revolver he wore would have been saved and talked about extensively at the time.

It seems there is just as much evidence he carried the cylinder conversion as this S&W. Rock Island knows full well there are over a dozen accounts written going back decades supposedly documenting a certain firearm that was carried by Hickok when he was killed. I have a lot of respect for Rock Island but these Wild Bill stories just keep coming in. It’s like the stories of who shot Ringo or was it suicide!

    • @RockIslandAuctionCompany
      @RockIslandAuctionCompany  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because it didn't magically appear. It's a well-known and documented gun that can trace its ownership back to 1876. It's in almost every book that talks about the guns of Wild Bill Hickok. It has been thoroughly scrutinized by historians and authors.

    • @RockIslandAuctionCompany

      A hasty "miner's trial" initially found him not guilty, as McCall claimed that it was retribution for Hickok killing his brother in Abilene (even though no such brother existed). However, authorities soon argued that the "court" in Deadwood was not legitimate, as it was inside an Indian reservation and had no jurisdiction. Ergo, no valid acquittal and no double jeopardy.
      So McCall was officially tried December 4, 1876. Found guilty December 6. Sentenced to death on January 3, 1877, and hung by the neck during a public execution in Yankton on March 1.

      Great story. Interesting, my great grandfather was in Deadwood working as a miner, possibly at that time. I have a letter from my grandfather relating that as a baby of 1 1/2 or 2, as told by his Mom, that in 1880 they rode 200 or 300 miles on the Deadwood stagecoach into the Black Hills to be with his Dad. I have pictures also of a big mining operation Pop worked at and one of the family on a hill overlooking it for a picnic of sorts. Horses and buggies are in the background. It must have been a lively time in that town at that time. Family history can be intriguing. Pop later took off for Alaska for that gold rush, eventually returning to Shelton, CT and from his earnings bought land and built a fine two story home. Have pictures of it also. My family had a fascination for photography for which I am greatfull. All the family pictures are in my possession. My advice is to learn your history as much as you can and tell your children about it. It roots us in the past as we make our futures forward. This video sure stirred some thoughts.
