    This is a great lecture that emphasizes the history and misperceptions of epilepsy. It's a good, relatively light, video to skim through on your lunch break. In 1843, the two most common causes of seizure were reported as fear and masturbation! th-cam.com/video/mM7rrjKITg0/w-d-xo.html

    Thanks Dr. Bolin for explaining very clearly this common disorder. One comment I would make is that Carbamazepine is pregnancy category D. Studies have found Lamotrigine to be the least fetotoxic

    Great Lecture. Maybe for the letter N in your VITAMINS mnemonic you could have added neurodegenerative and neurocutaneous disorders. The Neurocutaneous disorder would show some signs on a physical examination which would help you with your diagnosis.
    Apart from that it was a well taught lecture. Keep up the good work

    Really appreciate your videos Paul! One query though. Isnt the least teratogenic anti epileptic drug phenobarbital instead of CBZ?

    I was born with epilepsy and cerebral palsy. I have a twin brother, i was born first. My brother was born with no problems. I take phenytoin for my epilepsy, as a child I was on phenabarbatone, then at 14 i was put on Epilim 500mg. Which caused me to gain lots of weight. I went to live in Canada for a few years where I was taken off eperlim & switched to phenytoin. Which I still take today. As a child I had grand mal seizures, which doctors said I would grow out of. Which I did, but I now have petit mal. It' feels weird when I have it, i can hear all thats going on around me, but ppl and any noise, sound much louder, plus it feels like I'm floating on water. Before the seizure I get the smell like burnt toast. I can have a seizure at any time, night or day. Unpredictable. I feel a little confused when I come round, which lasts for a couple of minutes, then I'm back with you again. Usually a cup of tea helps me recover. I read a lot of blogs where people who shared their testimonies kept mentioning Anti-seizure Herbal medication. I searched for a website I just followed the email address of Doctor Patrick that was shared on these testimonies; I got lucky when I got a reply from Dr. Patrick. I followed his instruction, used Herbal Medicine in less than 2 months, I was already cure because of the changes I was seeing. Within a period of 5 months, I was cured totally forever. I went back to my neurologist, I was checked up and marked epilepsy free. If you need his help you can Contact this herbal doctor via his email herbalmedicalhome@gmail.com and WhatsApp connection is +2348102558553 for help...

    electrolytes derangement can cause fits but not epilepsy..am l right?

    • @pwbmd
      @pwbmd  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Mariam Hammaf If by fits you mean seizures, then yes, you are absolutely correct. And you would also be correct in saying that those seizures are not epilepsy, because epilepsy cannot be associated w/ metabolic derangement. I would avoid the term "fits" to describe seizures, though. Many would regard it as insensitive.

    • @Saadrbutt
      @Saadrbutt 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Mariam Hammaf Adding to what Paul mentioned; seizure (latin for "to hold onto) is an event where you have synchronous, repetitive, excessive depolarization leading to global depolarization shift. Epilepsy is a disease used when you have >2 seizures occurring more than 24 hrs apart.

      +Aisha Moh'd Honestly, you should not be asking for medical advice on youtube or the internet. Seems like your sister needs to be taken to a physician who can do a complete workup and help her out

    my prof told me that it's not mandatory to do EEG to diagnose epilepsy 😕
    thanks anyways

    • @13levels
      @13levels 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not mandatory to have positive results on EEG. It maybe completely normal and you can still diagnose the patient with epilepsy. Epilepsy is mostly a clinical diagnosis, 2 unprovoked seizures 24 hrs apart.

      Yes indeed! Binge drinking is reported in more than 1 in 10 children aged 12-17.

      Also, I'll just add for clarification: Alcohol withdrawal doesn't have to be "chronic"; In fact, acute alcohol withdrawal can be, and is, a cause of seizure, especially in patients who already have epilepsy or risk factors for epilepsy.

    But epilepsy is not a disability.

    • @moniquedewyk6341
      @moniquedewyk6341 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The seizures may not be considered to be a disability but the memory problems afterward are. I have had various types of seizures my whole life. I have never had an abnormal EEG. That's why it took so long to get a diagnosis.There are better videos about epilepsy.
