  • We take a look at three different MED modified cylinder heads to show how the three-angle valve seats are blended into the chambers.

I've been out of Minis a few years, but this kind of video stirs the old desires. Lovely work on that head!

Im 33 and when i was about 14 or so i use to read mini magazine and would do a; If i won the lottery parts and modifications list. I wonder if other people do that? Anyway I use to go to MED section of the magazine and run up an imaginary bill which could rival a small mortgage. Learning how engines and heads are modifed has always interested me so i left school and decided this is what i wanted to do with my life. I did an apprenticeship in car mechanics, that didnt do so well so then i went and did an apprenticeship in machining, welding and manufacturing. I remember reading in mini magazine about how MED offset the valves and at the time it didnt make much sense but since i have an understanding of machining it makes sense now. I was talked out of do engine building because i was told there was no money in it. There are no engine builders in my area. Back then in 2001 a college apprentice got paid 50 pounds per week and did theory at college on Tuesdays and worked the rest of the week. If i had lived in the same area as MED i would have definitely put forward my CV. On another note After the offset has been put in and the spring seats are milled is there not a high risk of the cast cracking on the side wall 3:03?
thanks for the video and sharing your knowledge its been fascinating.

Motor engineering is not highly paid, but it is steady and in high demand. I guess 50-60k a year is realistic with overtime etc..- what career did you finally choose?

Interesting. I remember doing porsche 356 engines. They had a small micrometer which was installed in lieu of the valve spring and the reading it gave told you the shim amount that was needed for the spring.

In Fiat SOHC 128 Uno, X1/9...type heads the valves are as in the video, very close , but I don´t know if offsetting the intake valve guide to fit 42mm valves can be made, probably the outer valve spring can not have enough room into the bucket-follower in stock place. Will be a big improvement, 1mm radius offsett is 2mm more valve diameter. Also think with offsett valve the top valve stem not is in the center of the bucket-follower, and can make the follower not centered in his guide. With rocker arms head this problem is solved as the video head. Good video.

Awesome, I had the idea to do that, but didn't think it would fly! I wonder if the same process could be used to put the valves in at a different angle?? As in 2°-3° without skruing things up too much,
Anything used to hold the iron slug in? Just a press fit, or a ledge on the top, to prevent it from falling in?

Great video - i just bought some pistons from you guys (imported to denmark). Do you upgrade to bigger exhaust valves even with standard bore? It seems to me there is no room for larger valves.
Oh, and that first head looks like absolute porn

Well obviously the heads don't crack between the valves or you wouldn't sell them, but there's not much metal there. Warm up/cool down procedure mandatory?

Do those shims fit a B series head?
