    The precision tool for measuring valve seat counter bore diameters is excellent. Never realized such a tool existed and figured you'd just use verniers.

  • @markjohnson6130
    @markjohnson6130 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Nice video, thank you. Your tools make me envious. I have a flow bench and you were in a great place to improve the flow simply by boring the valve insert seat to .9 diamanté's of the valve and then do a back cut on the valve seat. That would give you a bigger flow gain than porting the head.
    cheers and nice tools.

    • @muushkin
      @muushkin 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you mean a thinner valve seat? (Smaller inside diameter?) and then adding chamfer on backside of seat towards valve guide?

    • @markjohnson6130
      @markjohnson6130 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@muushkin Most people when porting a 4 stroke head focus on the port and narrowing the boss around the guide. but the biggest flow improvement comes from the valve seat area. Measure the valve OD diameter then bore in past the insert about 5mm exactly 0.9 of that valve diameter OD and blend into the port with grinder. Then cut the 45 degree seats and use the 30 deg top cut to position the head valve seat where you want on the valve. Then a very important step is to back cut or grind the inlet valve to 30 deg from the 45 deg seat edge towards the stem so that the valve ends up with 3 angles and the inlet seat seat ends up with 3 angles. Clear as mud I bet😁. Flows like a stream train 👍

    I enjoyed the video and the presentation it was excellent. Not sure how accurate the machine can hold a concentric tolerance. The most important critical thing is valve seat to valve guide concentricity. What tolerance are you able to get the seat and guide to? Otherwise known as valve seat run out. Do you measure it after cutting the valve seat? There is a measuring tool that fits into the valve guide and places a finger clock DTI on valve seat and you rotate it to measure if the valve guide is concentric to the valve seat.

    • @webtoedman
      @webtoedman 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Valve seat concentricity can never be better than the concentricity between the valve guide and the cutter arbour. If the guide hole is worn oval, then it is better to replace the guide, and start afresh. Expensive head machines use compressed air to create a self centering effect between the tool arbour and the valve guide. When cutting starts, the tool and the work "define their own centres", and the concentricity is produced automatically. (Allowing for clearances)
      It isn't overwhelmingly critical, unless the parts are grossly miss-aligned, because the two working faces are conical, and tend to self align, at the expense of a little extra friction and possible valve stem and guide wear. If the oil seal on the guide is good, then you wouldn't even notice, especially on a generator.

    A easier way of removing seat is to shrink it with weld basically falls out i use to use kerzan valve inserts kz3819 they are extra thinker than the average seat insert the valve height out the back is 37-37.5mm from spring bass to valve tip i also make oversized guides

    It's not about saving the head, is about the skills, the dedication, the passion of creativity, now here in America you can buy new for a cheaper price than the labor, but theres many countries that relies on fixing it because the ability of finding the part as fast as possible, lots of money could be lost in 3 days because of a engine broke down in a mass production line against a few hours on a local machine shop, FANTASTIC JOB

    What did you use for Valve Seat Material? Last time I did this it was mild steel. But I think commercial ones are cast iron. The one difference in making the seat was I ran a file over the od. to cause a slight taper, larger at the base. I then put the seat in the freezer or used dry ice and the head in the oven at 300 degrees for an hour.
