I think the land cruiser is much cooler, I didn't know this basic version existed, I'd like someone on TH-cam to take one of these to do a serious off-road project.
In different parts of the world the land crusier has a little brother. Here in my country we have most of the variants including its classier sisters Land Cruiser LC 300 and Lexus 670 The little brothers are The Prado for Toyota and for Lexus its the Gx460
If they were to use the 4door land cruiser it would have been fairer. Also the land cruiser had no kit and the hilux did. In my opinion the land cruiser is better, I even own one.
Bro I was already imagining how cool it would look like with a OME or Dobinsons suspension, Bf-Goodrich tires, TRD wheels, some bumpers and a snorkel lol. The amount of aftermarket customization that Toyota’s have is astonishing and if you add the already impressive base reliability and performance, no wonder why they are still on top in terms of main stream cars
I live in the states, but I spent a couple of years in South America. I remember the first time I saw a Hilux. Always cool to see a truck you never knew existed. This is back in the 2006 era and I also didn’t have internet at my home, so I was a bit more isolated and my ability to research was limited.
Not really much of a comparison. The top spec Prado comes with a rear diff lock and multi-terrain select, not to mention it's full sized, which would have helped it here.
Having driven both for weeks in south africa, the hilux is just more versatile and you can put in more stuff. hilux is really good at offroading and general driving around too. oh and the hilux is a lot cheaper than the land cruiser in the base spec
@@abrahamlouw2795 a 2019 model and that was its price new in 2018/19. The 2021 model just has 20kw more which you won’t notice but you could get a remap which would bring the 2019 one up to 165kw
@@spookyreaper1702 The uprated 2.8 is far superior. It's got new parts in the turbo, changes to the common rail system and I think the cooling system was bettered as well. If you can't notice 50 Nm and with the better pickup and everything, mate something is off. It also gets much better figures after some mods. Either way a 2016 Prado 4.0 V6 for ~R800k will wipe the floor with the hilux. Everything but utility & a couple km/l is far superior.
We used to own the Land cruiser Prado (similar one) but with 5 seats. That's the one that should've been compared to the Hilux because this short wheelbase version will of course be quicker and faster than the crew cab Hilux.
Yeah it's like they made them as different as possible for this comparison. LWB vs SWB, manual vs auto, with and without hdc, different differential lockings. Fun video but not a good comparison. I do know from experience that the SBW Land Cruiser hold it's own offroad. A company I used to do some contracting work for drove about 600.000km in one, with at least an hour a day of offroad driving mixed in with long highway stretches, and I've only had to pull it out of a puddle once, but that was more driver error than a problem with the car.
I have a hilux too, on the traction and wheel articulation section, it's not just the rear diff that does the work. Hilux has the system to individually brake the wheels that doesn't have grip so it can transfer power to the wheels with traction, it works even without engaging the rear diff lock.

Yep they surely are old school , but toyota focuses on quality not quantity ...... i am for sure these cars kept in good condition could last for more than 300k miles .... my friend’s father has a prado 2007 model , 4.0 v6 , it has about 600k km on it still running perfectly ........

You wanna test your off road suspension, go to a place where there's been tracked vehicles and artillery/mortar fire from atleast the last 50 years... also reserve a doctors appointment before going there. Your spine will thank you
Didn't know this version of the Prado existed. Personally I prefer the Prado myself. Comfy, very offroad capable and in the VX onwards for not too expensive you get a rear locker and a fridge 😉
The Hilux has an excellent pull. I think what happened is, that he put it in drive only and not in manual sequential mode. when you put it in drive the gear is automatically in 4th. I think that is why the Hilux got dusted during the first race at 2:55. At least in a Hilux that I've driven recently.
@@SpookyShaw94 because you'll break the diff. When you steer, front and back wheels move at different speeds. With the diffs locked, you're tying them at the same speed.
Love Toyotas, (I have a Hilux) but a LC Prado is a very remarkable car, maybe you should test the full size LC Prado or any big LC (with AT or MT tires, not the basic ones).
As the old saying goes, if you want to go off road choose a Land Rover but if you want to get back again choose a Landcruiser! There is no off roader on the market that can match both these Toyotas for reliability, The choice is simple!

The two door Prado looks better in the previous generation, IMO. And while I like the steel wheels for off road use, I'd get the alloy wheels if I'm using this longterm. It just looks better and won't rust as easily.
Pickup trucks supposed to have gear boxes what smalls but instead since that one has two caps and the other one has one I guess it's fair to call it the two caps has the automatic and then another one is gearbox and I think it's very strange the pickup truck has the auto mod and Plus gearboxes are very faster than auto

I found this odd too. But on Toyota UK's website they do mention 310mm of minimum "running" ground clearance. I think it's a typo and that they meant the maximum ground clearance (measured usually from the highest point like transfer case). In that case the 310mm is believable.

i think the hilux performed better in the suspension challenge,since it has the rear locking differential and the 500NM of torque,it just went right through.

Tires won't make up for that Hilux's locking diff. Road tires and lockers are better than AT and open diffs

It will be over a year until the new Amarok/Ranger will be available in Europe. Read that sales will start early 2023.

In Australia the Hilux reigns king as the tradies work horse. Land cruiser is always good with them long red sand drives though!
