Star Wars AT-AT Walkers in Unreal Engine - Fighting Animation

- My AT-AT's have left the confines of Autodesk Maya, traversing the vast expanse of their local PC hard drives to find a new home in Unreal Engine. They're doing everything they can to find something to fight.
Software:
Maya
Unreal Engine 5.3
DaVinci Resolve 18.6
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Illustrator
Rig:
Mine, I built it in Maya.
Made entirely by Jeremy Cummins using Unreal Engine 5.3, Autodesk Maya and DaVinci Resolve 18.6 . It took about two weeks not including the rig creation.
As an 80s baby growing up With Empire Strikes Back, I just cried a little from happiness
Me 2 🤗
But we've already seen this. We saw it in 1980, back when this imagery was both completely original and difficult to achieve.
i was born in the late 90s and my favorite sw movie will always be ESB
Same
Same, except I hate this. I hate everything about it.
The scene from Empire where they show the At At's coming toward them through the long range binocs still gives me chills.
Well, it's cold on Hoth😅
Now THAT's what I wanted to see! When I saw the migration video, I was like, "Wow he made these look great, but I wish he'd animate these babies in some kind of battle sequence." Wish granted!
Well, they’re all firing at SOMETHING…
*Play it on 0.75% speed to see the real magic! This is animated too fast! Something the creator needs to learn, mass vs speed!*
@@LunarTikOfficialthey can go 50 miles per hour
@@PugnaciousProductions like hell they can go 50mph. who ever wrote that in a book or a wiki page is a liar or extremely low iq. a walker going 50mph is 24 meters per second. meaning each foot moving would need to be a stride of 24 meters and for all 4 feet to move in a single second. the AT AT itself is only 20 meters long. that means for it to go 50mph it's stride would realistically be a max of about 1/3 its length and thats being generous, so all the feet would have to move 3 times every second. thats 12 steps a second so a step every 0.083 seconds, moving 8 meters each step. that means the feet would have to be moving each step has to start, accelerate, slow down, and then stop, to move 8 meters in 0.083 seconds using suvat calculations the feet would have to accelerate from stopped to 192.77m/s then decelerate back to 0 in 0.083 seconds. for reference 192.77m/s thats 431 miles per hour. That claim is 100% nonsense. even if there was some sci fi mumbo jumbo that made it mechanically possible it would be functionally ridiculous and look absolutely absurd.
@@michaelhuynh4953 prairie dogs???😂😂😂😂
The ambient lighting that lights up the front face plate is beautiful as it fires!
You mean, a reflection?
@@derrickstorm6976it's not really a reflection if it's not a mirrored surface
Need to be more intense and have a muzzle flash. Like lightning that burns the air.
It's definitely a cool bit of science fiction. Not a very good practical weapon platform. What if there's a sudden ambush from behind with a heavy anti armor weapon? Seems like it'd be really hard to turn around fast enough to shoot back
Jesus that actually makes the AT-AT's look scary.
They were always scary. They're just sped up
It's not scary, it's big and very slow, like a turtle but without shell. It doesn't make military sense even in fantasy setting.
@@marjanpPretty sure it had shielding, that's why the T-47s weren't able to harm them. So it had a shell.
It was slow, but it was also a kind of cargo troop carrier. I think if your trying to apply too much real world logic to this, your missing the point.
A minor ground tremor/camera shake as they're approaching would knock this into the next level... totally awesome...
The amount of firepower those main guns can output is INSANE. Rebels and ESB shows each heavy cannon can fire twice a second, which is probably about 3x more firepower than an AT-TE’s mass driver at full output.
The repeating medium cannons are hella sick as well
They're fictional
@@KMAK88 True, but I enjoy stuff like this
@@KMAK88 so what
@KMAK88 Yeah, we know they're fictional. Jesus dude, let people have fun. Thank God we had you here to tell us that this is fake!
@@KMAK88like your father figure
The Star Wars we get: Disney
The Star Wars we want: THIS!
We literally have this in current Star Wars
Sure we do @@hmrdev-billnye8166
You want an entire movie of just AT-ATs walking and firing?
@@harzzachseniorgamer5516 It would be preferable to the current Every-chosen-one-is-more-chosen-than-the-last-chosen-one garbage, yes.
@@cartoonraccoon2078 Not that the last movies were good, but the Disney bashing as of late is getting more and more hysterical. Example this right here :)
the very hot gun muzzles were an EXCELLENT touch. What might be nice next time, would be to see an AT-AT pilot moving around in the window. GREAT work here! V
Getting force choked 😂😂😂
I absolutely love how you overexposed the sky. its exactly what a real camera would do. great work!
But it's all fictional, where would you take a real camera to see this?
@@KMAK88Are you slow?
@@KMAK88 bro?
@@paintrane1179 he has other comments here. He is a certified moron.
Must have been a target-rich environment. Those guns fired non-stop!
Was probably Jakku(spelling?)
It's just an Imperial propaganda vid
Zombies
On one Side, a Star Wars Fan who knows how to show one of the most Iconic War Mashines from the Galaxy far far away. Including Camera Angles that show how big and scary this Steel Monsters are. And then, on the stupid Side of the Force, Rian Banthapoodoo Johnson and is unwalking Walkers that are only for Decoration. AT AT for ever.
One of the things that got me hooked when I first watched The Empire Strikes Back was the sound of the hydraulics and mechanical movement of the AT-AT's feet and legs as Luke was scrambling around under one after being shot down. Pure magic.
Certainly the Best war machine of Empire, as many Fans of them..... thanks for sharing : )
I liked the part where they went "stomp stomp!" and "pshew pshew, pshew pshew!"
That's a winning comment if ever there was one. I also do your username to my fur babies whenever the opportunity presents itself and often get annoyed looks in return.
🥲 Thank you. For a minute you brought back the real Star Wars.
The films never show enough of these
…or them being used properly at all!
0:35 Nice Elite AT-AT design. This whole thing is just so badass.
Love the detail in the cannon barrels cooling down after firing at the end there
That's beautiful! The only improvements I can think of are making the AT-ATs dirtier, but that's a designer choice (If they're fresh off the assembly line for example). The walking is also faster than the movies, but honestly, I prefer this speed. You sir, have true talent and skill!
This walking speed makes em scarier!!
The Zen of watching beautifully rendered AT-ATs blasting the landscape!
I'm imagining a "Wilhelm Scream" at 0:45. Great work! Unreal is an amazing set of tools.
It does fit perfectly!
This is good work. I really appreciated the two guns on the sides of the head being “machine guns” rather than small caliber cannons as they are most often portrayed.
This is amazing work; well done :) One nitpick: I feel like the leg animation is a bit too fast; while the mechanisms are undoubtedly very powerful, I think given their sheer weight it should move a little slower. That said, this is an incredible production and I hope it serves you and/or garners some interest from game/video studios :)
Ohh my. This is by far most fantastic shot on AT-AT's done by someone not working for a studio!
I can still hear the collective "whoaaaa!" from the audience when we caught our first glimpse of an AT-AT in the trailer for Empire Strikes Back.
"Troop Transport" my ass, these things are so much more terrifying than in ESB
Better than any of the "new" star wars stuff.... can watch it on loop all day long! Well done!
You perfectly matched the camera angles and the motion of the walkers. If they'd been walking in snow, I would have sworn I was watching footage from the original. Most impressive, and I'm not making any cute reference there. This is excellent work!
You were, this is just super imposed over the Hoth scene.
My main critique is that their animations look too fast and snappy, makes them look small rather than huge. Walking animation needs more weight, needs to be slowed down by like 75%.
Excellent animation! Now that's what I'm talking about! Great to see the walkers moving quicker, more in keeping with how they should move. Looks a little odd after being so used to them clomping around so slowly for so long, but a much better representation of their more likely speed. Also, loved the sustained fire of the machine in the middle, and the glowing laser barrels at the end. Nice! The only thing I would've added is one of them taking a mortal hit from a heavy calibre weapon or an X-Wing (which they subsequently shoot down).
Gorgeous animation! I absolutely love the homage to "maximum firepower" blast at 0:02
This clip is better than anything Disney has done with Star Wars! Amazing, got time to do a full movie 😂
This is excellent! It’s such a shame that Disney can’t come up with things like this. They’ve run Star Wars into the ground.

*Why does the AT-AT on the left have a red illuminated viewport, where the others do not? Just curious. AWESOME JOB!*
In the mobile game there were "Elite AT-ATs" with glowing Windows I'm guessing this is that model
A proper star wars game where battles were kicking off looking like this is SOOOOO needed.
Jeremy @knonfil these excellent sequences deserve a much bigger audience. From the locomotion and weapons movement to the lighting, sound design and emissive materials (loved the glow fading in the guns at the end), it really is fantastic. Great job!
*Play it on 0.75% speed to see the real magic! This is animated too fast! Something the creator needs to learn, mass vs speed!*
Nice to see those side blasters engaged…short rapid firings..nice touch!
I really like that they finally fire how an automated weapon should fire.
Ironically I think it's main guns are reloading to quickly :D

@@LunarTikOfficial Great tip 👍
I've never been a fan of Star Wars but I do like the hardware and the ATATs are no exception.
That was better than all 3 new star wars movie
They were so huge and an easy target and vulnerable from the sides and rear that even the alliance didn't have the fire power to take them down!
These are brilliant - loved how one of them squished the camera!
*Play it on 0.75% speed to see the real magic! This is animated too fast! Something the creator needs to learn, mass vs speed!*
I wish those Star Wars cartoons looked like this. I'd probably actually watch them.
Dang. This looks great. It's got that overexposed sky and dirt on the lens, too. Very nice!
That cool down of the laser canons was so bad ass
This is specifically why I built a new gaming rig last summer... and I'm suspicious that I'm already going to need to upgrade the processor and video card before playing anything rendered in UE5. This is just sick and amazing.
I actually got little chills watching this. Please make more.
It's kinda crazy how well this mimics the look of tge walkers in ESB, which equally look impressive for the technology at the time.
この連射性能と速力それに首の旋回速度、本当の脅威。
これがウォーカーの本当の実力。追加で上部に収納式のミサイルランチャー、側部にも収納式のキャノンと改良したら無敵。
Absolutely sick, I love to see these awesome shorts, and hopefully a short film come out soon enough 🤞
ABSOLUTELY PHENOMINAL work!!!! I imagine the walk cycle was sped a bit to cover more ground for story-telling purposes? Truly MIND-BLOWING! 🤯👏
Aside from them, moving a tad too fast, which is a quick slow down in the playback, this is damn near perfect!
Jesus you nailed how they moved in ESB and made it better.
they look/move like the actual hoth models
very satisfying
WOW! This seriously looks amazing! I don't know if it's how you framed your shots or the fact that the Walkers are firing almost non-stop at the beginning that really grabs your attention and doesn't let go. I immediately felt like I was watching a movie. This is better than anything Di$ney has put out lately. Great work!
Special effects back then and decades later, both are very much appreciated! ❤ Well done!!
Really cool how you managed to capture the surprising speed of them
I was waiting for some T-47's to go speeding by them! Very nicely done!
That looks fantastic. Harder than a pocket full of marbles.
Need a Star Wars film like this showing how powerful the empire was in attacking planets and scaring the living daylights out of the galaxy class watching one of the most scary armoured vehicle in there Arsenal
They may not be very practical, but the AT-AT will always be one of my favorite star wars means of transportation. I kinda wish our military would build some.
Brilliant, really gets the feel of Empire Strikes Back
really gotta admire the courage of the cameramen
Finally i saw the minor blasters in action !!! Wish see more action like that in future movies or series ! Good Job !!
Okay - There's been a lot of great things happening in the world of mainstream animation lately. Especially the blending of CG and live action styles - be it mimicking lower frame rates (12 FPS, or using Key frames and doing movements on 1s, 2s, or 3s). KUDOS and PROPS to the animation of these. It does a really does a nice stop-motion style interpretation of the AT-Ts. It's kinetic, full of character, and I fricking love it. I don't know what sort of pipeline is used - but it's awesome.
What I like about this, is it has that stop-motion look to it. 'Feels' Star Wars.
I don’t know who you are, but that was awesome!! We dreamed about this in the 70’s and 80’s. Thanks
Wow, this looks better than anything Disney has put out in any of their shows and movies.
I love seeing the barrels cool down. A tactical head canon that I've got is that if they were to overheat, the crew had to pull the barrels out internally and put new ones in, like a machine gun IRL.
Far better and more interesting that anything produced by Disney since 2017...
Great work! Yours are the only 'classic Star Wars FX recreated with modern tech" that are any good.
awesome work. when the t foot came down is a great transition to another scene. amazing what UR can do
Better than anything Disney has done. awesome.
That shot of the ground looking up the AT-AT's leg at :43 is impressive.
Fan animation has reached such an incredible level. The attention to detail is unbelievable - awesome work!
The Empire Strikes back!
The AT-ATs are so cool ... and so impractical
Brings one to mind of the WW2 naval bombardments of Okinawa, Iwo Jima and Normandy where every ship with anything larger than a 5 inch gun fired on land targeting enemy bunkers/emplacements, etc. It's also similar to old ww2 footage of Russian Katusha rockets being fired from behind the lines toward the German lines.
I appreciate the clear inspiration from movie scenes and original empire cover art
Why couldn’t we get things like this with the sequel trilogy….. gawd!
This is amazing.
This video is FAR SUPERIOR to ANYTHING Disney has put out!
I've said it before and I'll say it again, there needs to be a true starwar battlefield game.
So well-done, Jeremy. I'm impressed how you included dust on the lens, too. UE was a good move, for sure. Good luck and keep up the great work.
New fear: canonically accurate AT-AT's
Continue the assault!
how f*king amazing it was when these robots first appeared in early 80th!
They look really terrifying. Very cool.
Beautiful work, I think this is the best representative of AT-AT's at full firepower output!
They remain as intimidating as ever....scary even.
the high rapid cheek laser are awesome, never see that before
OSHA says to maintain at least 3 points of contact. Well done.
I love how troopers aboard the ATAT
i love the atmospherics and lens dirt
Way better than The Last Jedi.
Searched for this comment and no it isn’t
The smoke of the guns at min 1:00 most impressiv!
....so......damn......COOL!!! Excellent job! Thank you for this! I want MORE!!!
AT-ATs would make the _ultimate_ RVs
Awaiting Richard Attenborough's narration describing the life of the AT-AT Walker.
bad ass dude.....love the gun barrels heat sink glow ,,,,,,great detail
*Looks cool but you need to work on your speed vs mass. These are moving too fast to be huge machines. Slow it down, physics are very important.*
Precisely. We are used to see huge animals moving somewhat slowly (like when you see a majestic blue whale, for instance). So if their movements are slowed a tad down - but only their gait, the rapid firing should remain exactly the same - we'd kinda FEEL their sheer mass and size and it'd be even more believable.
As iconic as they look the AT-AT is also vulnerable to air attacks and their weak spots are their blindspots.
