I notice I'm always referring back to Anandtech articles to research and to check what I say in my videos, so I feel it's about time they get a proper shout out for being THE best hardware review site on the internet... if they ever get around to reviewing whatever it is you're interested in :P
This video covers the modern generations of Intel's desktop CPUs, their epic struggle to advance beyond 14 nm, and the rapid change in direction once Ryzen hit the scene. Obviously I've missed a lot, and skipped a ton of details, but this video should serve as a handy summary should you be watching all of the 12900K reviews today asking what all the fuss is about.

I remember reading my IT textbooks during 2020 and the books talked about intel 10nm coming out in 2015
It's crazy to think Intel was so far ahead their competition the most logical choice was to wait up for others and claim profits for the better part of a decade.

Yep, it absolutely was. Many CPUs were outright slower than their cheaper predecessors. There was no benefit to the consumer (hence many of them got heavy price cuts mere days after launch), and very little to Intel. Intel got to have a new line of parts out to appease shareholders and partners, and they gained a little bit of experience with a new architecture that wouldn't be that dissimilar to Alder Lake.
11th gen was like that because it originally was supposed to be on 10nm, like 11th gen TigerLake. But Intel ran into some foundry issues, and had to backport it to 14nm again late in the cycle. Which completely screwed performance and at that point there was nothing they could do but launch it. In some programs it does perform quite a bit better, but in a lot its only slightly better than 10th gen.

In 2014, I bought an i5-4690K. It finally broke earlier this year, and I got an i3-10100F for just $98, since I didn't want to spend more than I had to. I was a little worried at first, but it's got twice the threads (8) and runs at damn near 2x speed of that $300 i5. It's truly amazing what money can get (besides GPUs) nowadays.

Cries while viewing this video on my 1st gen Core i7 930 (45nm). 60 FPS 1440p ultrawide I might add. Those old CPU's can still pull their weight.

Back in late 1990's to early 2000's if you wanted to play the newest games, you had to upgrade your computer every 3 years or so. 400Mhz Pentium II was the fastest consumer cpu of 1998 and it barely ran games in 2001, even if you paired it with top of the line (1998) Voodoo 2 SLI.
It all changed in mid- to late 2000's with GTX 8800 and Core 2. Suddenly your CPU could have lifespan of over 10 years while happily maxing out graphics in the newest games. Sure, GPU had to be replaced faster, but before GPU-shortages even the cheapest gaming GPU could run every game at 1080p. They still can, but they're not so cheap anymore.
I have i5-3570k and GTX 1070 myself and I'm happily playing newest AAA titles 60+fps. And it's a 5 years old card! That would've been unheard of in earlier days.
The first core i series cpu's were and are trash. Sorry. Even the Core 2 Quads overclocked were faster than those were overclocked. I highly suggest upgrading to a Xeon, like X5680. They're cheap from eBay or aliexpress, there's a ton of videos on TH-cam.
It fits the same motherboards, you don't have to change anything else. It's made in smaller process, has more cores, runs cooler and faster and if you're into overclocking, clocks higher.
Sure they still _work_ - in the same way that a 40hp engine _can_ climb a hill - but please, don't try to pass them off as viable. Any Core i3 released in the past three years would do you a *far* better service, I assure you.
My i7 2600k is almost 10 years and still hold's up ! Can't wait to upgrade and feel the difference
It's as fast as ryzen 3 1200 which can still push up to mid end graphic card performance.
I have 2600k running as my family computer and it's still running just fine.

My favourite thing about the 12th gen CPUs is that they haven't quite figured out how to get the efficiency cores to play nice with a lot of existing software yet, so they've re-introduced the turbo button as a workaround! There's a UEFI switch that allows you to use the scroll lock key to disable the efficiency cores. Absolutely hilarious.
My favourite thing about furries is that they are quite easy to run over with my car.

It's mostly due to crappy DRM again. If Denuvo gets moved from a power to an efficiency core, it believes it's running on a different system and stops working.
The "legacy" scroll lock hack simply prevents anything from running on the efficiency cores.
@@D0Samp it's an issue with a lot of productivity software at the moment as well. Say you start a video render in one program, then go to edit photos in another. The video render will be moved off to the efficiency cores, even though it really shouldn't be.
@@asphere8 At least, that makes sense in some ways. The scheduler may choose to favor responsiveness of the foreground program over the batch job running in the background and move the latter to the E-cores, also not all parts of a multithreaded render may need to run at full steam to finish in an adequate time.
It's only bad if it's doing rapid ping-pong between different core types.

Bloody hell, been missing out on some great content. Had to look across the channels after the Klik Empire video and found lots of unwatched content that surely were of my interests. I dont think the stagnation is an issue with the actual content at all

Great video Philip, I've been following this tech closely since Haswell (4000 series), so it was great to get a bit of a refresher on this all!
I feel validated for holding onto my i5 2500k for so long and glad I wasn't the only one to notice it's longevity. Also, I would be super interested in hearing your thoughts on Apple's new m1 chips and the shakeup they're causing, even though it's generally outside the gaming space!

I have a laptop from early 2016 with 5000 series CPU and Nvidia 920m GPU. It is still very good for general tasks and I can easily play AAA games up until 2017 on it. That CPU is very good, it's served me well with almost 6 years of CAD work as well as gaming.
Great (and cheeky) vid as usual Philip! However, I did notice some flickering on the tables with the CPU names, I assume that this was an error in editing/rendering?
jusy got a lenovo m93p tiny with an i5 4570t, and this little pc from 2013 has spurred me on to leaning more and more about pcs, cpus and especially Integrated graphics.

I have only recently upgraded from my 6700k (before that I had an fx-4100) to my ryzen 3600 (bought in april of last year, getting a gpu was not possible so I gave up and stuck with my 1080)

I like these videos, because I'm currently 25 years old and don't have any memory of any technology from when I was a child. All I remember is that I had a family computer that ran Windows XP. Never knew the specs for it, but I never cared at the time.
Interesting observations as always Philip. Would love to see you do sponsored videos on new hardware releases that interest you. Hopefully some of the manufacturers will see this video, but maybe its better to reach out to them :D
Finally some competition again. The power consumption is less than desirable though. The cost of DDR5 is also high right now, but that is to be expected if you are an early adopter. I hope intel cpus for laptops will become less expensive as well to further competiton.
@@saricubra2867 Instead of betting, I looked it up, and I see quite a few tests where the 5950X has better scores at 240W with just cruise control PBO. So, Intel managed to roughly match AMD's year-old CPU architecture (with DDR4 vs. DDR5 even). Y-yay?

It's nice to see this kind of video where people talk about the past up to this point although I do think you should include a generetion before, should be 1000s but it's mostly a three digit processor which follow the i3 i5 i7 line but I'm not sure.
Also I think you got the plus amount correct but it doesn't matter anyway lol.

Rocket Lake was the first Intel x86 desktop CPU beyond Skylake microarchitecture, bringing with it a notable uplift in IPC, AVX-512 instructions, PCIe 4.0 support, and offset by a slightly worse memory controller than previous.
On cores/threads, 8/8 is almost always better than 6/12 assuming all else is equal. In practice, having HT/SMT vs not in best case real world scenarios is about a 50% throughput uplift, but those are extremely rare. The vast majority of software is much lower than that. Cinebench family is a long time choice for good scaling, and even that is only around 30% benefit, which puts 6/12 about at parity with 8/8 in that case. For most code that scales worse than that, 8/8 will easily take the lead.
I'd also suggest checking out Dr Wafer Eater's video interview with Jim Keller. In particular, about how process development is not a step change like the 14++ jokes suggest, but it is more a continuous evolution of multiple minor changes.
over the last few years I've upgraded from a 4690k to an 8600k, then finally to a 9900k. I think the only one of these CPU's I bought new was the 4690k. I always thought this was a relatively sound upgrade path I've taken but now I'm not even sure anymore. I love my 9900k and probably won't replace it for a long long time, but I feel like I could've done a little better.
Indeed, my older laptop still has a Sandy Bridge CPU and it still is fairly usable for most basic tasks

Until very recently I was using a VERY old setup from 2011. When I upgraded I was seriously considering just keeping my I5-2400, until I realized the motherboard might not be compatible with anything new.
Welcome to Intel, where we arbitrarily change the CPU socket and chipset every 1 year (or maybe 2 years if we’re feeling generous), even when there’s literally no actual goddamn need to do so!
I’m a big fan of AMD’s much more consumer-friendly style of keeping sockets and chipsets compatible over the course of often 3-5 years. (It does have some downsides though, because now you’re relying on the motherboard makers to not make shitty hardware/firmware so that the compatibility works, and that’s of course a crapshoot because motherboards suck.)

I have the i7 990x in the living room somewhere. When it was paired with the Asus Rampage III Extreme and 24GB DDR3 it was unreal for gaming, development and 3D. Now I have a 4690K which is a huge dissapoinment compared to it but "real" mobos with triple channel ram support is extremely hard to find at anything under £300.
Fun fact the platform costs for the 12th Gen comes to 750 dollars.
I am, this week in early 2023, only just now replacing my i7 2600K with a 13900KF setup. It's been a good run. Sandy Bridge was an excellent time for CPUs.
little error in your spreadsheet: 7980xe is Skylake(-X) and not Kaby Lake! So it's really a 6000-series CPU

lol that ending, im feeling a repeat on 12th vs 13th gen. seems to basically be the same if you clock 12th gen to match 13th gen. with some small diffrence due to larger chache.

I don't think the i9 logically follows from the X-series. The 7980xe was followed by the 18core 9980xe and 10980xe, which use a different motherboard and were also an architecture behind. Similarly you would call the Ryzen 9 3950x an extension of the lower tiers and not a rebranding of the Threadripper 2950x, despite core count and numbering it has less pcie and uses the consumer socket.

Glad I ran my i7 920 till I bought a 9900KF a few years ago. It was a great little chip that served me well for almost a decade. It was water cooled with a high oc for the better part of that time and never even hitched. Sure 42nm wasn't the most efficient node in history but it sure did work for me back than.
what is the relation between threads and cores ? can someone shine a light ? for example the 8700k has 6/12 and the 9700k is 8/8. which is better ?
So it is a bit complicated. Usually after each generation the IPC will be improved which will result in faster cores. However a thread is not as fast as a core. A thread is 30-40% of a core which means 8 cores 8 threads is better than 6 cores 12 threads. 4 threads is approximately equivalent to 1.4 cores.
