Advice, record your thoughts and memories of the time you spent with your grandfather, with all of your grandparents, you mom and dad, uncles and aunts. One day you will be glad you did this.

God, I am thinking tonight of those who earn their living by fishing the North Sea. Keep trouble and storms away from them. Those who work The Minch, also, keep them close to Stornoway and to Ullapool. They work as I could never. Bless all of these people, and their waiting families. Through Jesus we ask this. Amen.

I'm a Hindu and I love this hymn.
My Dad was a merchant seaman. He was present on D-Day on June 6 1944. We sang this hymn at his funeral. I bawled my eyes out.

It's my fathers funeral on Thursday 16th June 2020, he died of Coronavirus at 97 years of age after surviving WWII in the Navy. We have a choir singing this as there will only be a few of us at his funeral and we are all crap singers x

@@johntracy72 That chapel service was at 11:00 AM, just about 15 hours before 1500 people would be the ones in peril on the sea, and no one would come back for them, (except for lifeboat number 4 and 10).
Last week me and my sisters family had a huge crave to go on a church mass on Sunday and this hymn was played as last hymn after the priests blessing. I suddenly remembered this from the Titanic and i vigorously stood up and started to sing with the other people inside the church hall. It felt just so amazing, i felt the air fill with hope and happiness.

I grew up in a fishing community, when as children we went to the fishermens bethel at the top of the street , it was always sung, sung even at school, brings a lot of memories back.

I was just reminded on Facebook that 73 years ago at this minute, the survivors, and some still to die, of USS INDIANAPOLIS were awaiting rescue on the Philippine Sea. God bless them, the survivors and the dead, in particular Charles B. McVay, Rear Admiral USN (Ret.), who, after over 20 years of guilt over the loss of his ship and his men, took his own life on November 6, 1968, thus becoming the last casualty of the Indianapolis disaster. May his tortured soul rest in peace.

This prayer was answered (for most passengers) on the English Channel last night. Thank God for the fishermen who were nearby. What heros! They should be honoured.
But sadly it was not answered for 1500 people on April 15th, 1912 on the Titanic. Which was about 15 hours after they sang this song on the Titanic for the onboard Christian service.

I still remember hearing this when I graduated boot camp, I still choke up every time hear it. my Grandfather a fellow sailor asked I sing this at his funeral. I started choking up and the honor guard and my uncle started singing with me. this song is attached to some of the strongest memories I have.

Next week marks the 75th Anniversary of the attack by the Japanese on Pearl Harbor Hawaii. My Father who was so young joined the Navy and this song is so beautiful, I loved my Dad so much, he was never the same after the War, he saw really horrific things he lost a good close friend and he suffered from what they called back then "Shell Shock" today it's called "PTSD" may he R.I.P.
My father suffered too. I wish he were here for many reasons. One to tell him again I love him and I understand something of what he suffered in North Africa and Italy during the War. And how he tried to tell us. He and Mama did so much for us and gave so much to others. As I know so many others have too.
Written by The Rev. William Whiting who lived on the coast of England. This hymn has been adopted by the US Navy as the Navy hymn/song. Because of its deep meaning to Mariners it has rightly in my opinion become part of naval tradition around the world.

i was a sailor in the Royal Navy whose back was broken in the bay of biscay(?) at the hight of the cold war. i survived to be able walk again, all be it not very well. i survived thanks to my love of this hymn and it's words

Many thanks. Rousing seascape image, great hymn with moving harmony, and deeply felt words. Music is universal. We need this when we find words inadequate to tell how we feel, of a sense of awe and yearning when at sea. I have nothing to do with the British or American Navies but the music does bring me closer to those who have anything to do with the sea and serving one's country. A pipe organ accompaniment and a four-part larger choir will have made it perfect.

Not unless a translated version exist. Many countries have their own hymns, so adopting a foreign hymn is wrong and disrespectful to previous generations.

+Ian Weatherall I am a volunteer sea rescuer in Western Australia. I regularly think of this hymn especially going out at night in a storm. Was thinking of it today because there's a bunch of guys on a rig in the caspian sea in a bad storm lost 3 anchors was thinking of them tonight.

i really liked this hymn but we are not christians so i guess this will not work. but here in japan we have our own hymn for sailors and everyone who goes out into the unforgiving nature of the sea.

I live close to Halifax, and I can just imagine what it was like when they sung this in the maritime sailor's cathedral that day. Getting to sing this for Remembrance Day is an incredible experience. We are losing our veterans...please don't let their sacrifices be forgotten.

Apparently many of the people on board the Titanic sang this song during a church/religious service at around 11:00 AM of April 14th, 1912, not knowing that in about 15 hours they will be the ones in peril on the sea.

Reverend Charles Morgan, pastor of the Roseddale Methodist Church in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He had a dream. The sound of rushing water, and many voices. It was a disturbing dream. He'd felt as though he had been present at some great tragedy. Even though songs had already been selected for the evening service, he asked the congregation to sing the hymn, "Hear, Father, while we pray to Thee for those in peril on the sea." It was April 14, 1912.....

Nobody has given me an answer that made any sense LOL. He died to save us from our sins, thus we are all saved. Done. Everybody is cleansed and going to Heaven. So...the logical question is : who is currently in Hell then? Who populates the Purgatory? Better yet: What happens during the Last Judgement-- all those who are already in Heaven and in Hell will be recalled and re-judged then??? Can you answer this? Better yet, ask your priest, see what he says LOL. Watch him squirm trying to tackle these simple questions, because none of them knows the answers either!

This hymn although written for seafarers, is suitable today as we face peril on land, sea and air from the Coronavirus.
It’s magnificence speaks to me of our need to cry to our Father for protection today. We truly are in ‘danger’s hour’.

My father sang this hymn in Port Arthur, Texas at St. John's Lutheran Church. Many an old sea captain had tears in their eyes while the song was sung. Many were the memories of a life at sea. I pray that God will bless them all.

My favourite hymn, I had uncles in the Navies ( Royal & Merchant ) as well as the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. It has always had a special meaning for me.

No...to be honest, I've never played the game. When I was diagnosed with Parkinson's I decided to learn to play a musical wind instrument to regain control of my fingers. I chose the ocarina because I liked the sound.

I just SO LOVE the relaxing nature and collective Eloquence of the words to this beautiful hymn. I love to put this on Repeat when in need of calm.
I first became aware of it when it was featured in the movie "Titanic" in the scene that takes place on Sunday April 14, 1912 ("the last time Titanic ever saw daylight'), when Jack goes to see Rose, whose in church service with her mom and Cal, but they won't let him in. Anyway, they're singing this hymn. It ends with a shot of Rose singing, "For those in peril on the sea..." I always found that foreshadowing haunting.
