I guess you weren't alive or missed the 80's because the album won him a Grammy and a hit on the Billboard charts in 1987. He was never underrated and well respected as a musician and songwriter. Do some research first before you make yourself look stupid.
This song is about heartbreak and finding solace in music. The lyrics describe a person going through a difficult breakup, feeling the pain of lost love. The mention of "mandolin rain" might symbolize the healing power of music during tough times. Even though the rain is falling, music, like the sound of a mandolin, offers comfort and a way to cope with sadness. This song reminds us that in our lowest moments, music can be a source of emotional support and can help us navigate the storms of life.
Love the lyrics & his amazing, clear voice & the phenomenal talent he has when it comes to playing the piano & the great drum player in the background. One of a kind!!!

I was on my way to work when this song came on. You talk about taking you back to your younger days when life was so carefree and people helped each other. Not this we have now, so much hatred and evilness in our world. Thank you so much Bruce and the Range for this amazing song!
2023 and it still holds up exquisitely and in comparison to music today, I long for excellent song writing. Structure melodies and musicianship. Still beautiful and excellent recording! 😊❤
The Way It Is has political themes@@Rotstift-nr2cw . Mandolin Rain is a tribute to a past that is gone, never to be found again, like the end of the relationship that Hornsby is singing about. Poignant and beautiful
@@Rotstift-nr2cwNo it's not about politics. Seriously? Listen to the words maybe? It's about a lost relationship and him reminiscing about the past relationship. He has another song about social injustice, but this is definitely not it!!
In 1990 walking at night into the parking lot of the department store where we worked to find a note from my girlfriend under the windshield wiper of my car.
Anyone ever had the experience of hearing a song you’ve heard your whole life and hearing it out of the blue and realize it’s a masterpiece? I’ve been listening to this song all day.
Oh yes. It was about five years ago when I heard this song playing in a McDonald’s, and it was the first time I had heard it in about 10 years. It immediately made me nostalgic for the times this song played on family road trips (which is saying something because I hate road trips). I realized that I wasn’t listening to an ordinary song, but a masterful message of accepting heartache.
I remember the first time I saw this vid on MTV on a rainy night back in the summer of 1987. I wasn't too interested in music at the time, but this song, and the rest of the album, piqued my curiosity in music... so much so that i eventually became a bassist in a rock band. This song always holds a special place for me.
When I was 10 years old my uncle took me to my first ever concert and it was Bruce Hornsby and the Range-playing in the Sangre de Cristo mountains during the deep summer monsoons. The band was stationed at the bottom of a steep hill which the crowd used as an amphitheater while sitting on picnic blankets enjoying wine and cheese. The rains swept in but just light enough to keep the concert going and the breezes thru the pines blowing. His voice, the band and his piano mixed with the scent of freshly damp earth and pine air. I go back there every time I hear this song and it is counted as one of the BEST days I’ve lived on this planet! 🎹💗
Of course I would go back! I think this very thought every day. All the family members that have since passed, they were all here and happy. And so was I.
My dad loved this song and played it all the time before he passed away. If his singing and the piano playing doesn't make you love music there's something wrong with you! This song make me feel so Good.
The melody and instrumentation are a masterpiece, the lyrics poetic but I wouldn't call the content feel-good. It's beautifully melancholic and nostalgic is more accurate.
From the first time I heard "Mandolin Rain," I have loved how it came out of the gate: potent, powerful, making an unambiguous statement, yet with wonderful subtleties and wonderful, poetic lyrics. What you got here is musical artwork, plain and simple.
I don't know what is better in this song, the melody or the lyrics. Both incredible, and a real tearjerker, to be sure! Reminds me of losses of my own.
Every loss we experience brings back all the other losses we have ever experienced whether it’s material or metaphorical. I guess grief is the gift that keeps on giving, the price of admission we pay for having loved and been loved so very, very well. Please take care, Mr. Cooper.
The nostalgia that comes with this one. Going out to dinner with my parents some rainy friday night. Soft Rock radio spilling out these gems that i would always remember. Summer afternoons with VH1 on as my mom would iron clothes with the windows open wide. Its not just about the 80s. They were like no other time. But also, Its about being young in a world surrounded by the things and people who will become the very core of who you are. The memories and innocence. The songs you didnt know would mean so much. The ones you listen to over and over again at 41. Music is my time travel. I put this one on and im back home, away from everything. Safe. Loved. Beautiful
I was 14. Had just moved from the city to a tiny tiny little town. Mad as hell I'd been drug away from my friends and girlfriend in the city to be all alone in this shit hole. Then I began to live the best 5 years of my entire life! Thank mom.... You knew what was best for me. 1987 began it all for me. I miss the 80s in ways and in an amount I have no words for. WTF have we done? What have we let happen?

Yes!! And this was my favorite song by Til' Tuesday when i was little, Kate and i used to listen to this song all the time on my record player and i had this song on a 45 rpm record and even Til' Tuesday was my favorite group back in the 80's when i was a kid and your version sounds so beautiful like Til' Tuesday's and i love it!! 🎵🎶❤️❤️❤️❤️😊
I had an album by Til Tuesday I used to play on my record player in 1985…

Sorry to read this. I have dreamt for ‘forever after’ but soon realized that people change, nothing lasts eternity
I was 14 years old in 1986 and this song touched me in a way that I wasn’t able to shake at that time. I played the hell out of that cassette and ruined it. Thought I had moved on from it. Then, one night after my daughter was born, I rediscovered it and I was 14 again. Great memories are attached to this song and album for me. The entire disc is literal musical gold. I listen to it every chance I get. 🤘🏻🤘🏻❤️❤️

Wonderful comment. Kind regards to you.
Im right there with you I was 13 years old and when I hear this song it takes me back......everyday single day
This is so touching 🥺

Back in the 80s, I was a teenage metalhead....still am a metalhead, but I would still listen to Bruce Hornsby and Steve Winwood. listening to this song reminds me how much I miss those days.
You have depth!
Same here my friend I'm right there with you I miss the 80s as well and yes I'm still a head banger from the days of listening to Twisted Sister Van Halen and the Scorpions but I always loved Bruce Hornsby and the range and whole host of others but that's what makes me miss the 80s even more good music Good Times....

Too much truth in his music
I couldn't agree more.
@@drumninja1869 Exactly. i was about to post a similar comment. Mid 80's was Electric and BH and The Range were given every opportunity to Shine..and they did.
Timeless song. Such an underrated artist. 🌠
I guess you weren't alive or missed the 80's because the album won him a Grammy and a hit on the Billboard charts in 1987. He was never underrated and well respected as a musician and songwriter. Do some research first before you make yourself look stupid.
This song touches the Soul to the core 😍
Hello, how are you doing it's nice meeting you here
This song is about heartbreak and finding solace in music.
Just makes you wanna cry sometimes, when we see where we are , and where we've been...

I was on my way to work when this song came on. You talk about taking you back to your younger days when life was so carefree and people helped each other. Not this we have now, so much hatred and evilness in our world. Thank you so much Bruce and the Range for this amazing song!
I'm 43. This is still one of my favorite songs ever. Heartbreaking and gorgeous.
This is magical...can't describe how it makes me feel...it just gets me...every time 🥺
2023 and it still holds up exquisitely and in comparison to music today, I long for excellent song writing. Structure melodies and musicianship. Still beautiful and excellent recording! 😊❤

This comments section is so unbelievably beautiful. No politics. No race. Just wonderful people enjoying terrific music.
This song is full of politics though. Against the suffering of the working and work-less classes. This song has good music AND good politics. ;)
The Way It Is has political themes@@Rotstift-nr2cw . Mandolin Rain is a tribute to a past that is gone, never to be found again, like the end of the relationship that Hornsby is singing about. Poignant and beautiful
🙏🏾 Amen
Amen. Says alot about this music.
@@Rotstift-nr2cwNo it's not about politics. Seriously? Listen to the words maybe? It's about a lost relationship and him reminiscing about the past relationship. He has another song about social injustice, but this is definitely not it!!
I never followed Bruce, but this song gives me goosebumps for some reason. Those piano skills are amazing.
The ending. Absolutely. And I never fail to cry

Hello Tammy how're you doing today?
@@toefield251 A breakup note?
Anyone ever had the experience of hearing a song you’ve heard your whole life and hearing it out of the blue and realize it’s a masterpiece?
I’ve been listening to this song all day.
Oh yes. It was about five years ago when I heard this song playing in a McDonald’s, and it was the first time I had heard it in about 10 years. It immediately made me nostalgic for the times this song played on family road trips (which is saying something because I hate road trips).
I realized that I wasn’t listening to an ordinary song, but a masterful message of accepting heartache.
It’s a gorgeous song!
Welcome brother
I just did…. He is an awesome piano player and all around artist ❤️
You're spot on. I always liked it, but I played it again about six months ago, after a long hiatus, and now I can't "put it down."
This song still just gets me right in the heart
Hello Sandy how're you doing today?
How many of u agree that the 80s was the best era of music
I agree 80's was the best of the best up to this time
What started first it ever ideal

*I'd want to change things so life would be easier today, but alas those were fun days.*
Number one on the list
Me I've been ready for 34 years
Of course I would go back! I think this very thought every day. All the family members that have since passed, they were all here and happy. And so was I.
In a heartbeat
My dad loved this song and played it all the time before he passed away.
If his singing and the piano playing doesn't make you love music there's something wrong with you!
This song make me feel so Good.
Holy shit, are you saying there's something wrong with me? I knew it.
Sorry for your loss😣😭😢
Ditto
The melody and instrumentation are a masterpiece, the lyrics poetic but I wouldn't call the content feel-good. It's beautifully melancholic and nostalgic is more accurate.
His style of piano playing and writing is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This song is visionary! Beautiful!
The Way It Is might have been his biggest hit but this is his masterpiece!
I have never loved "The Way It is" as much as I have "Mandolin Rain".

Just love this treasured song and Just the way It Is, thank you for sharing
I remember when I heard this on the radio I was 13 then now I'm 44. Good old days
From the first time I heard "Mandolin Rain," I have loved how it came out of the gate: potent, powerful, making an unambiguous statement, yet with wonderful subtleties and wonderful, poetic lyrics.
What you got here is musical artwork, plain and simple.
You nailed it!!! I love the tempo too, sort of odd-metered like a Dave Brubeck tune.
What a lovely song ❤Thank you for sharing 💯🔥

Linda madziya. Do this song warm your soul?
every time I hear mr Hornsby play that piano my eyes full up with tears , you are amazing god bless
Cooper.
You haven't mentioned Bruce's voice! It's no less important than the other factors.
This was playing in the grocery store the other day. Great stuff ❤
Safe. Loved. Beautiful

Yes, I do. Apart from 15th/16th October 1987 when I was working nights (outdoors) and southern Britain was hit by the ‘Great Storm’ I was right in it.
