Sailing was recorded in 1979, utilizing the 3M Digital Recording System, making it one of the first digitally recorded songs to chart. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on August 30, 1980. The song won Grammy Awards for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Arrangement of the Year, and helped Cross win the Best New Artist award. Produced by Michael Omartian, it features Tommy Taylor on drums, Andy Salmon on bass, Rob Meurer on electric piano, and Victor Feldman on percussion. In 1980, Sailing was released as a single in Latin America under the translated (en español) title "Navegando".
On the Howard Stern radio show, Cross explained that sailing with his friend got him away from the trials and tribulations of being a teenager. Cross said that if the guy had taken him bowling and he enjoyed it, the song could have become "Bowling."
This live video was recorded at Warner Amigo Studios in 1980 and featured a live audio cut (different from the one featured in this upload) for use where the band would be lip-syncing on television, to be more realistic than the missing orchestra. This footage has been digitally enhanced to HD quality and features audio from the 2019 remaster of Cross' 1979 debut self-titled album:

LYRICS
Well, it's not far down to paradise
At least it's not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away
And find tranquility
Oh, the canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me
It's not far to never never land
No reason to pretend
And if the wind is right you can find the joy
Of innocence again
Oh, the canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me
Sailing
Takes me away to where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
Soon I will be free
Fantasy
It gets the best of me
When I'm sailing
All caught up in the reverie
Every word is a symphony
Won't you believe me?
Sailing
Takes me away to where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free
[Instrumental Bridge]
Well, it's not far back to sanity
At least it's not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away
And find serenity
Oh, the canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Really, believe me
Sailing
Takes me away to where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free
ABOUT CHRISTOPHER CROSS
Christopher Cross burst onto the music scene with his 1979 self-titled debut album produced by Michael Omartian. The lead single “Ride Like The Wind” spent 4 weeks at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and was quickly followed up by Cross’ most popular single to date (and first #1 hit) “Sailing”, which later became known as the archetype for the Yacht Rock genre. In 1981, Cross became the first artist in Grammy history to win the “Big Four” most prestigious awards in a single night; Record of the Year (for the single “Sailing”), Album of the Year, Song of the Year (also “Sailing”), and Best New Artist. Later that year Cross released “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do)” which he co-wrote with Burt Bacharach, Carole Bayer, Peter Allen, and was the title-theme for the 1981 film “Arthur” starring Dudley Moorre and Liza Minnelli. The song earned Cross his second #1 and the Oscar for Best Original Song at the 1981 Academy Awards. Cross’ sophomore album “Another Page” was released in 1983 and featured the singles “Think of Laura” and “All Right”. Cross has sold over 10M albums worldwide and his songs have been covered and sampled by NSYNC, Puff Daddy, Avant, Shirley Bassey, Dione Warwick, and many more. - เพลง
The beauty of Sailing is that it resonates with so many people, it can be interpreted as simply being in a boat on the water or as complex as the transition we experience through art. I have been very touched by the way people relate to the song. - Christopher Cross
Reminds me of summers spent at the lake in my youth near Marble Falls, TX.
Takes me back in time riding around with my mother in her VW beetle.
Unforgettable song, so beautiful! :)

I am 54 years old and had a heart attack 5 days ago. I had an emergency stent placed and I will survive. In my search to find calm and serenity for the years I have left, I was looking for music. I rediscovered this song today after 1st hearing it when I was 9years old. It brings back so much joy and calmness to my heart. It really makes the stress go away. Thank you CC for this gift.

My brother was an artist. Loved being on the water. This was one of his favorite songs. He passed from brain cancer 6 years ago. Miss him
Imbrace the feeling , your alive share the inspiration. Enjoy life, stay away from crap no one needs it especially at your age
Enjoy it
A dear friend passed away last week and we used to listen to 80’s songs in his ford 1971 that he was restoring and he had installed a new stereo. We had good times remembering all these times!. RIP MARIO!
Each time we embrace a memory we meet again with those we lost. For the heart never forgets ! 😢 ❤ Take Care Friend
🙏 love is forever
Every time I hear this song it takes me back to a job I had back then. I met this fantastic girl that I pretty much fell in love with immediately, but she didn't notice really. We went out a couple times as friends, I quit that job, didn't see her for months (I was 80 miles away) came back almost a year later on a fluke to that same company, and well, that girl has been my wife for 41 years now, two kids and three grandkids...ANYTHING can happen when you're not looking!! LOL
Wow! Precious!
Friend you made me cry. 😢
That's real ❤️ love
Thats class true love class
Amazing history to tell to your kids and your grandkids. I'm 17 and I really hope to meet a girl like you did and have and awesome history like you. I hate that nowadays most of the young people meet their couple online. I hope that there are girls out there that think like me. Again, incredible history.
43 years later and this song brings tears to my eyes. I would give anything to return to that time.
Same😢
Me too😢
Love, return to Us! We know!
Yep me too 😢
Yes, it was so peaceful and just good. We had real friends, genuine laughter, just simple...
This boy owned the 1979 Grammy Awards. Christopher Cross is the only artist in Grammy history to win Album, Record, Song of The Year and Best New Artist categories in one night.
Yes I remember that night when he took all those and his songs sounded like nothing that was going on at that time. Phenomenal.
Wow 🎉
Did not know that, but i can understand why
I remember the night!!!!!! A great night!!!!
Then later he won an Academy award.

Born and raised in Newport Beach/Costa Mesa, Ca. My High School friend and I would drive down to the Fun Zone/Pier in his 79 Camaro Berlinetta with the T-Tops off listening to this. I thank God I experienced the era. You're not alone.

I remember as a child hearing thus for the 1st time. I ran out & bought the single, then the album. Everybody kept asking me who was that?? & My big sister always said, "u like those old people?" .... now years later everybody have the song - playing it at there weddings?? I Use to say, "Damn ur All ALWAYS LATE!!???" ... Im always tryna put yall up on game. Waddup Sandy!!
The year was 1980 and I was only a 13 y/o girl losing my dad for cancer. This song was my way to escape reality. I miss you, daddy - one day, we will be reunited. ❤
God bless you
You will be with him again, I am sure of that. God Bless.
So sorry for your loss, sending you a hug.
I’m so sorry 😞 😢Hugs
I also think that we will all see each other again one day.And then it's nice when we can all hug each other. Ich denke auch das wir uns eines Tages alle wiedersehen werden. Und dann ist es schön, wenn wir uns alle umarmen können.
My aunt was flying home from Florida to Iowa and sat with Christopher Cross on the plane and he told her he was going somewhere to become famous.
SO SHE wasent ssiling.

This song is special to me, it reminds me of my father and the good times we spent together singing it. He died of a brain tumor. When I miss him I listen to this song, I look at the Sky and I smile and I imagine singing it with him like the old days. A person never dies completely if he continues to live in our hearts ❤
Let's be real, this song wasn't recommended to you, you searched for it, and because of that you have an awesome musical taste.
Yes Sir! 👊🏼😎
Absolutely 💯 😊
Yes youtube actually recommended this video to me just a couple days ago.
Ironically enough, I have attempted to find it (along with another one from him) in the past online rather unsuccessfully due to not really remembering his name.
I'm terrible with names of artists/musicians...
No but ok still love it
Thank you ❤
This is the song that always pops up when I am thinking of my mom. She died from cancer in 2017. I like to think she is sailing away in heaven.
That made me cry for your lose, I miss my mum so very much
I lost my mom in 2022. I close my eyes and remember her and just imagine her transitioning to the other side peacefully while listening to this song. This song speaks to the soul❤
Me
❤❤❤
Same here - Mum had Mother’s Day with me and my brother (he came over from Aus and I live in London) it was a perfect day and she looked radiant - she left us 3 weeks later ❤️
EVERY TIME I LISTEN TO THIS SONG, I GET EMOTIONAL. IT RESONATES AT THE FREQUENCY OF THE HEART. MR. CROSS REALLY DAILED IN ON THIS SONG IT'S A TRUE CLASSIC.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written
Indeed 😎🤙🏻
I'm 34 and I love all cris songs. It's calming and peaceful.
This song is four minutes and 17 seconds of what a little touch of Heaven on Earth would be like.
1980, driving across the bridge from Somers Point NJ into Ocean City, this song playing on the old Buick 225, the sun hitting the ripples of the waves around the bridge and those "light chimes" that you hear throughout the song playing.. 20 years old, alone and not a worry in the world. Would drive back to my apartment, boyfriend waiting there to greet me after a long day at his job. Married soon after and did the same with our kids,, Life was good and still is, 44 years later. We hit the beach often in our golden years, children grown, memories made and still being made. Play this song when driving to the shore still.
I see it ..
Yep, back when young people got married and made it work. Same general age here, married in 1979 and still enjoying life together!
I was just 10 when I first heard this song had the whole world in front of me… times was exiting.. My dad would always listen to this song I loved it. 56 now and I cry when I hear this song. Were did all the time go. When I pass on this will be played at my funeral for sure. 🙏🏽🙏🏽
I think Christopher Cross should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame his songs are Amazing and Awesome
Has he ever been nominated
Him and N'Sync both. N'Sync covered this song on their eponymous 1998 debut album. Both their bodies of work are neither too small or large.
My brother died 2 days ago, this song is his favourite. His personality is beautiful,he was the one .. always makes people, friends around him laugh out loud. I will forever miss him so much. I love you Mas Rakabery ❤
❤❤😅
I'm so sorry for your loss
I'm so sorry for your loss, may he rest in peace.

therew is always love
This song has NEVER aged for me, and there were so many musical nuances in the music, coupled with lyrics that are like a gentle lullaby. My husband and I were both teens in the 80s, and he has always been a devoted metal music fan. I played this timeless song on the way home from Florida, and as we passed the ocean on the way out, he and I both felt every word and every note. He has been a Christopher Cross fan ever since❤
Here I am sitting. Its march 15th 2024. Just sharing the beauty of this song with my cousin who passed so extremely quickly of pancreatic cancer! Tomorrow her funeral!💔 Oh I know she's here, listening n watching as I move to this song! A song that means..to me.. about being free! Free to explore anything your heart desires! Like a blank canvas anything is possible! Dreams! Take you away from the world if only until we wake! So beautiful!
Hugs Adela! It's not goodbye! Its till we meet again...💜💫

Same to you softrockmusic
I listened to this in 1979 and still listen to it on repeat in 2024. The best of timeless music is that none on my children were born yet when it was released and they love it just as much.❤
It's like he's tryna to show us something so special and elusive, magical right in front of us that we just can't fathom, because they all told us we cant
It's not to far to never never land,..no reason ,to pretend ?.....wind is right you will find a door a door to eternity...
Like on some peter pan shit..for reals
Simply beautiful. Back when the music was more important than the image.
So true
"WELL PUT!!!"
The way it always should be…..
Couldn’t agree more. The simplicity and beauty of music itself is stripped today for an image portrayed. Music doesn’t need anymore than itself
People were more fine tuned to learning music in groups (pooling ideas etc) back when this came out and didn’t have all the distractions of today. Wonderful song and performance.
My brother's best friend was buried to this song. In 1980....... Rest in peace tommy
Great song for a celebration of life.
What year ?
Aww thats so touching 👐 wouldn't have been a dry eye in the house 🥹
Christopher Cross has such a unique voice. It’s hypnotizing. You can just close your eyes and get lost in it.
I’m 29 and this era and type of music is the greatest in human history
"It's not far back to sanity..." My mom suffered from depression most of her life. I used to listen to this song and pray that she would find peace of mind and heart. She then, has since passed on. So, when I hear it now, I know she is finally at peace. Songs can mean so many things to so many folks. Thank you Christopher.
❤sur une chanson comme Elle, la paix est bien présence quand je l'écoute,un pur bonheur ❤

26 years old and just came across this song for the first time.
I must say, with absolute sincerity, that this is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard.
Working away from family is so very difficult but these old songs provide me peace and serenity. Yes, even in 2024. 😢
yep. now i work close to home
As a black kid in the 70's, we traveled all over the U.S. every summer the day after the last day of school. Through all of the states and seeing many different people, this song will always stick with me forever. Still i see cows, the many corn rows, flat land everywhere. I Smell the air still. One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard in my life. It brings me to tears almost every time. Thank you Christopher Cross.
Agreed, smoothest song ever.
Yes I agree and me too it brings me to tears ❤
It captures a place and a time I think we experienced in childhood( innocence, carefree simplicity)....or a place and time we wished we had if we didn't....that we are desperately trying to find again.😔❤
contrarily, for many of us it reminds us of an era where our parents were completely ignoring their children and going off and playing racquetball and partying with friends and doing other stupid Boomer shit... The memories it brings back are only of regret - wishing those people had bothered to be humans and not selfish Boomers for one day in their lives.

My Dad would put on the Christopher Cross album downstairs when he got home from work. We could hear it playing upstairs while we ate dinner. After a long day on his feet, he enjoyed the tranquility, and it made me appreciate the solace of such songs. I will listen to this song to the day I move on to the next life.

To the person that reads this, I ask the Lord to bless them and their family, to cure them of every sickness and pain, to fill their emptiness with love joy and peace, to rebuke the enemy from their lives.
I still cry when i hear this song. Not sure why. I'm 58 and it brings back so many memories i guess.
It's1979 and the whole band looks like it. But Christopher Cross is timeless, he looks like a young man from the late 90s
This is what is called a "true classic".
A song of such purity and serenity that can take my soul to lovely places. I just close my eyes and listen!
Nobody sounds like this anymore. Its timeless.
my 92 year old grandfather JUST passed and fair winds and following seas.......he LOVED sailing.....and this song will ALWAYS now remind me of him and the DREAMS he wants to me to achieve. god....cherish life and loved ones folks because it can all be over like THAT, sometimes you NEVER see it coming. Then, Carole King might have something to sing for you, lol. But seriously, live every minute of life, because the only thing certain we have is what we have, and it only lasts for so long.
If you planning to listen in 2025 hit that…

Probably the most beautiful song of alll time.

Te envío mi abrazo, espero estés rodeado de una linda familia y seas muy feliz.
❤
So sorry to hear that you had such hard times ! God Bless
Hope the future is brighter for the both of you Stay strong 🙏 🙏
As I always say, music is the closest thing we have to a time machine. Period.
We are currently in the winter of our generation aka the fourth turning where everything dies to make way for next generation. When this song came out it was the summer of our generation when everything looked optimistic. Now you have a corpse as a President to represent the death of the American dream.
I agree.👌
@@discodirk48i disagree with your president comment. Perhaps we are nearing a new civil war and that’s fine with me. Willing to die for my black beliefs and final freedom. I almost want it. You and I have lived, seen better days but for us BIPOC, it’s not been fair and equal, ever. We as a nation move forward regardless who our president might be or we pariah. I’m ready with way. We can be friends or foe. If it’s the ladder…..Imma be relentless!
When he sez you make me feel free again...whenever l'm alone with you, you make me feel clean again...moves my soul...
The artists of yesterday had so much soul!! You can even somewhat see it in the society at that time. Today just isn’t quite the same. But I live in hope.
Se vc voltou aqui para ouvir esse som Parabéns! Seu gosto é Excelente!!!❤❤😍😍
Verdade show 😂
The beauty of this song transcends all time and space truly moves my soul

The intro just maybe the best intro to any song ever made, and then you get the song. just maybe once again the best song ever made, it takes me so far from this place we live in.
Just said those exact words@❤
My all time favorite song and coincidentally, sailing went #1 on the billboards on the very day I was born! No wonder it’s my favorite song!! 😊
Probably the most beautiful song ever made. What an astonishing sound. Nostalgic and smooth. The right person to sing this too. The country voice and all is perfect.
I love this song. I'm 44 and it's been a favorite of mine since I was 17 years old. It makes me feel calm and free and like I'm on another level of peace. It makes me believe that anything is possible.
Amém

@@jon5104 aww I was born in 78. How special for you. I went to am/pm last night and the song came on. Cried my eyes out. No matter how many times I hear it I always cry.
@@samanthasaldana120 I do hear you Samantha! its so mysterious and so awesome at the same time that some songs can do that to us, music can surely feed the soul, and Sailing will always do that to me, thank you for sharing that.
