That’s a great way of describing it. I hadn’t heard this in years and it was a great rediscovery. I actually think I undervalued a lot of these songs at the time because of a saturation of great music.
One of my favorite memories. I was taking a flight from LA to NYC. And somehow found myself sitting next to Brenda Russell and her daughter. Which was strange because we three were the only passengers in the cabin. Forever I remember her kindness, her beauty and her extraordinary generosity of spirit.
Some folks make songs to be in with the times, BUT others create songs that are timeless 💎 Thank you Brenda, Jeff Hull, Scott Cutler (songwriters), and Joe Esposito (backing vocals) for creating this gem.
I danced to these songs when I was in my teens, four decades later this younger generation doesn't know anything about these classics, cherish these people...
When this song came out.. it was paralleling our wedding in 1988... But I feel I owe it to her to keep it in my life.. thank you Brenda Russell for this masterpiece
Give yourself some time to heal my brother, you'll eventually be able to listen wit ease, your story reminds me of when I lost three siblings who attended elementary school with me, they were all murdered by their uncle in 1984, at that time Jeffrey Osborne had a hit single " We're going all the way" at that time, and for years I could not listen to that song up until 10 years ago, they still come to mind when I hear it but it doesn't hurt as much , time heals all wounds.

Imagine having a song playing in your head for years and finally stumbling across that song one day. Yea, that really just happened here. 👍🏿 can finally die in peace now.
Brenda Russell (nee Brenda Gordon) & a high-school friend of mine, Jackie Richardson, were part of the Toronto female singing group 'The Tiaras'. Brenda went on to a solo career, singing, songwriting & producing with her husband Brian Russell. Jackie has gone on to a stellar career as a singer, & theatre, TV & film actress, having won numerous awards, including the Martin Luther King Jr Achievement Award for her theater & music achievements, and the NAACP Image Award. Two talented ladies. 👏 👏 👏
True story: This was the song that encouraged me to start learning and playing the piano when I was 12. I almost gave up and taught myself to play after I couldn't afford piano lessons anymore. I'm now an accomplished pianist because of this song. I WANTED to learn to play it.
Thia is pure art! No nudity, crazy body movements, violence, or another nonsense. It is just hee voice and the band delivering pure and beautiful music.!❤❤
I don't think you were born when this song came out..pure 80s sound this song brings back alot of memories people were much different back then music was different😊.
The 80s was a great time to be a teen. All the good songs and movies we had. I would not change that for anything. I wish female singers that used their beautiful voices in the 80s. They would use it today and come out with real good music like they use to. I don't like music they put out today. It's trashy and way to sexual and to me that is not music. I don't even want to go there when it comes to what guys put out today' it's worse. And this is just what I think and everyone has their own taste in what they like.
My late daddy loved this song so much. Now I listen to it with tears in my eyes but I know he's here listening with me. My 1st dance at my wedding will be this in honor of him. RIP daddy, I'll love you forever. 😍
Same here with my daddy too! I listen with tears in mine as well. My daddy died too. Cancer, recently. It’s not my dad’s favorite song, it’s mine but it reminds me of him though.

Absolutely love it thank you very much. I do agree there’s a lot I haven’t heard as yet and more than eager to do if there are anymore more amazing ones like this let me know, thank you❤️ please let me in on some of your favorites
I heard her perform this live in the year 2000 with Michael McDonald. I can't tell you how excited I was when she sang the first few notes. The music goes through your soul..
I was 17 in 88' working at a shoe store after school. This song would play and it never left my soul. All these years and still have it on my top 10 playlist🖤
I was listening to this in the car with my kids the other day singing so loud .. hitting every note and they were so annoyed! They dont appreciate it... but I do that's why I'm here! June 2020! 💞🤭
Tell them that it's cool to be a hipster now. Gen Z (i.e. kids and teens today) tend to like old music a lot. Tell them they're acting like 80s kids by making fun of older music! lol
They are gonna love this song when they get older because it will remind them of you! They are going to hear this song in the future and say "My mom used to LOVE this !" LOL. So you should pat yourself on the back you just planted the seed for them to appreciate this song. haha
I'd be honored if some fans of under-the-radar late 80s classics would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of HEAVEN HELP ME by Deon Estus & George Michael and GET HERE IF YOU CAN by Oleta Adams & Brenda Russell on my YT channel in tribute to the era. Live acoustic with no autotune. Peace & stay safe.
Oh Dear God... What song is that? I love it when the clips usually have this accompaniment in the background and the black & white that surrounds it, making the song more powerful. That era is no longer coming back, it was the pinnacle of musical creativity, pure art and not garbage that they recycle in this culturally saturated world.
The summer in 1988 I heard this a lot on the radio. I would turn up the volume up. This song til this day touches my heart. Its a part of my teen years.
I was 14 in the Summer of 1988, right before I started high school. That year was so hot, but it was fun and this song played all the time. So many memories

You're right, for some unknown reason she didn't and she had several beautiful songs with different artists.
You right, she didn't. The samples got more recognition. But they are also proof of the magnitude of her influence
Amazing song
I was 17 in 88' working at a shoe store after school. This song would play and it never left my soul. All these years and still have it on my top 10 playlist🖤
How I wish I did experience it to :(
It’s a great song!👌👌
Tell me about it; the power of MUSIC is Scary and Beautiful at the same time!!

What a beautiful ballad. It brings me spiritually closer to my sister, who joined the LORD 33 years ago. I love you Janet!
Praised be the Lord for this beautiful ballad! And for Janet, too 🙂
Conheci essa música no ano de 1988.
Se não estiver enganado, é um dos temas internacional da novela Vale Tudo (1988).
This song is a whole mood. Thirty something years later it still hits me that way.
@shview james Brenda Russell Piano In The Dark is one of my favorite song

Man, this song takes me back to my senior year of Highschool. That's the magic of music.
Old, but forever loved
I was listening to this in the car with my kids the other day singing so loud .. hitting every note and they were so annoyed! They dont appreciate it... but I do that's why I'm here! June 2020! 💞🤭
Yo babies dont have an ear for talent!
Time to have them scrub toilets and clean out the cabinets!😅😂😘
Tell them that it's cool to be a hipster now. Gen Z (i.e. kids and teens today) tend to like old music a lot. Tell them they're acting like 80s kids by making fun of older music! lol
They are gonna love this song when they get older because it will remind them of you! They are going to hear this song in the future and say "My mom used to LOVE this !" LOL. So you should pat yourself on the back you just planted the seed for them to appreciate this song. haha
@@elainasmall3481 You are so sweet and kind with your comment.Kids will remember this song with love for their Mother.✌
Embarrassing your kids in public is a parents' job. Embrace it!!!
I haven’t heard this in over 2-3 decade's and I remember all the lyrics because it was that good! Thank you TH-cam!
💜🙏🎶🎼🎹💕 yes indeed
Só quem viveu essa época sabe o quanto essas músicas deixou saudades.
😂 verdade show 😊
Who is listening to this beautiful song now in 2024
I’m listening to Brenda Russell Piano In The Dark near the end of April 2024
Epic Song and probably one of the most poignant and romantic underrated gems ever written.
She also wrote "If only for one night" made popular by Luther Vandross.
@@willritter4076 sounds good those are 2 of my favorite songs of all time along with this classic track!!!
Ein wunderbares und stimmungsvolles Lied!
@@leshawnkincey2398 oh cool
a golden treasure from 1988 , a great song from an era when real music was played on the radio
Singers were unique and when you heard one you knew exactly who it was unlike today where they all sound the same
Ha! I know almost all 80s songs. I was trying to figure out why I didn't remember this one... It's because it came out the year I was born lol😂🎉❤
It was the greatest era of music, those 80s were😂🎉! @@jessicacooper8257
And I used to record it off of over old and new cassettes!!😂
Oh Dear God... What song is that? I love it when the clips usually have this accompaniment in the background and the black & white that surrounds it, making the song more powerful. That era is no longer coming back, it was the pinnacle of musical creativity, pure art and not garbage that they recycle in this culturally saturated world.
This song is as old as me, but unlike me, this song didn’t age. A true classic
To be fair 33 years old is not old whatsoever. 43 maybe...
Me to I'm 45, I remember this on the old radio. Lol
Love this song
THIS BLACK BEAUTY WAS A PART OF MY LIFE DURING THE EIGHTIES.
Core memory of seeing this video on vh1 in the 80s. I remember thinking how cool her apartment looked… a piano and a harp.
They just don't make music like this that speaks to your life and touches your soul thank God for youtube!
AMEN TO WHAT YOU JUST SAID!!!! I couldn't agree with you more!!!!!!

Such a beautiful song. I love 80s music ❤
I am addicted to this song since five days ago when I rediscovered it...simply a masterpiece of art! A real and gifted artist!
Omg! Same! It popped in my head yesterday morning and I just keep repeating it like a two year old.
The summer in 1988 I heard this a lot on the radio. I would turn up the volume up. This song til this day touches my heart. Its a part of my teen years.
It's so true..part of my teenage years as well
I was 14 in the Summer of 1988, right before I started high school. That year was so hot, but it was fun and this song played all the time. So many memories
I was 28 years old love the 80s.
@@paisleyprincess7996, same here. I was the same age, also going into HS. ANd yes, it was a very hot Summer. I was living in NYC , at the time. No longer there!!
