My dad passed away yesterday and now I'm making a playlist with all the songs he loved and I remember him by. This is one of them. Thank you dad for showing me the greatest artists of all times. Loved, missed and never forgotten 🤘🔥❤
I used to work at Burger King from 1992 to 1999 during High School and University and these songs used to lift my spirits. Some of my fondest memories.
This music was play regularly on a radio...who hears radio these days? People are too fast at the tip of fingers the internet made people grow old fast.( love whole heartily, the after it might be gone)
I used to do late night ballads way back on radio...there was this compilation CD...comps were just getting to be used in Radio production. So thing is you'd leave a compilation disc to play after closing the show....So I'd hear it on the way out...then it became my staple...tear jerker! yet I don't follow the story...just melody that communicates and that background guy...My days!
@@mariar6096 I’m 74(!) and keep coming back to this song. My memories of it stem from it being on and album way back in the 70’s (I’m pretty sure it was that far back). But people are commenting she released it as a single in the 80’s. In any event, it is a long lasting masterpiece!
One of my favorite memories. I was taking a flight from LA to NYC. And somehow found myself sitting next to Brenda Russell and her daughter. Which was strange because we three were the only passengers in the cabin. Forever I remember her kindness, her beauty and her extraordinary generosity of spirit.
I can think back and remember My wife and I was driving from Cleveland to the Pocono’s listening to this on the freeway. I was so happy and in Love. Great Love

When this song came out.. it was paralleling our wedding in 1988... Even though it wasn't in our ceremony we considered it our song.. the beautiful vocals.. that unforgettable single key piano sound in the background... I've kept it with me and held it close all.these years. my wife passed away last year of cancer... One of the things she loved was having a soundtrack.. to listen to.. and of course she listened to this one many times in the final week... It's gut wrenching listening to it now... But I feel I owe it to her to keep it in my life.. thank you Brenda Russell for this masterpiece
Give yourself some time to heal my brother, you'll eventually be able to listen wit ease, your story reminds me of when I lost three siblings who attended elementary school with me, they were all murdered by their uncle in 1984, at that time Jeffrey Osborne had a hit single " We're going all the way" at that time, and for years I could not listen to that song up until 10 years ago, they still come to mind when I hear it but it doesn't hurt as much , time heals all wounds.
It's amazing how songs can take you on a time machine. Love and miss you mama. Those memories of car rides to school singing at the top of our lungs will always be with me ❤
True story: This was the song that encouraged me to start learning and playing the piano when I was 12. I almost gave up and taught myself to play after I couldn't afford piano lessons anymore. I'm now an accomplished pianist because of this song. I WANTED to learn to play it.
I danced to these songs when I was in my teens, four decades later this younger generation doesn't know anything about these classics, cherish these people...
My late daddy loved this song so much. Now I listen to it with tears in my eyes but I know he's here listening with me. My 1st dance at my wedding will be this in honor of him. RIP daddy, I'll love you forever. 😍
Same here with my daddy too! I listen with tears in mine as well. My daddy died too. Cancer, recently. It’s not my dad’s favorite song, it’s mine but it reminds me of him though.
I was literally obsessed with this song when I was 14-15. I feel time stops each time I revisit it. Consciousness has a strange way of getting you back in time with songs as if time was frozen ❤

Music is soul stirring powerful. Listen to Pastor Montell Jordan sermon about the power of music on TH-cam he sung "Get It on tonight" back in the day. May I invite you to listen his message/testimony?
Has there ever been a more perfect mixture of pop, jazz and blues in one voice? Ms Russell with that piano playing accompanying her in the background made this an instant classic
By far, one of the absolute most beautiful songs ever written. And she sings it with such perfection. Thank you for giving us all such a beautiful gift. I cherish this song.
I was born 1980 and growing up I love classic oldies music. Nowadays music has changed and I feel like it will never be the same as it was generations ago. Still I'm truly happy good music is still around.
her voice gives me goosebumps, i can't stop listening to this song, she is perfect, todays music has no soul, no emotions, soo sad that we'll never see a master piece like this again!
OMG!!!! This song so takes me back to the day in 1988 back to when I was a little boy at 6 years old living out my glory days of being really young, adorably cute, innocent & carefree. Now today I'ma 36 yr old man and this song still today makes me feel like a 6 yr old little boy all over again!!! Forever Old-school R&B 80's music!!!!🎶

Samia Williams Me too 🤗 That's all I listen to 70s 80s 90s. I can't be bothered with any new music today doesn't feel right.Probably some but not all just saying.
A truly wonderful vocal artist who is undervalued and appreciated. She possesses a beautiful voice and sings songs with meaningful lyrics that always evoke and capture vivid visual images.
Timeless is the perfect word… And the way Brenda sings it, my heart breaks every time I hear the passion in her voice. Some songs are just so beautiful it almost hurts to listen to them, this is one such song.
@lauracline8865 Really.. That's He's your maker.. Your Creator.. Your Heaven and Father 👨 He's your Savior.. Let me tell you a secret yeah If you want him to be part of your life and help you out with anything you dream of.. Just go to your room and be on your knees and say a prayer to him.. He will answer..
@lauracline8865 How do you explain your existence and how you end up here.. Give the try.. And Reactivate your Faith.. You Gotta believe. Your maker is wireless just talk to him and he will answer you.. He gonna make happen..
Brenda Russell. - Piano in the dark. She sings this song with true passion. She tells a great story very catchy but emotional too. A sad but lovely song beautifully sung. Very nicely done ✅
Man this is just one of those songs that hits you right in the heart. You can feel the emotion from the lyrics, and beautifully composed instrumentals. Truly a timeless classic. I can listen to it on repeat..
Exactly - just when you walk out the door you can feel the emotion pulling you back - really, what song in the 90s 20s, has really invoked this kind of feeling, this kind of emotion in the listener? And this is the reason we are listening to it and commenting on it 30 years later. Yes, THIRTY years after it's release. How many "modern" songs will stand up to THAT test of time. I heard this song on the radio today, that's what brought me here. I also heard Miss Whitney I Wanna Dance. Same goes. A different time. A better time.
I was listening to this in the car with my kids the other day singing so loud .. hitting every note and they were so annoyed! They dont appreciate it... but I do that's why I'm here! June 2020! 💞🤭
Tell them that it's cool to be a hipster now. Gen Z (i.e. kids and teens today) tend to like old music a lot. Tell them they're acting like 80s kids by making fun of older music! lol
They are gonna love this song when they get older because it will remind them of you! They are going to hear this song in the future and say "My mom used to LOVE this !" LOL. So you should pat yourself on the back you just planted the seed for them to appreciate this song. haha
The summer in 1988 I heard this a lot on the radio. I would turn up the volume up. This song til this day touches my heart. Its a part of my teen years.
I was 14 in the Summer of 1988, right before I started high school. That year was so hot, but it was fun and this song played all the time. So many memories
@@paisleyprincess7996, same here. I was the same age, also going into HS. ANd yes, it was a very hot Summer. I was living in NYC , at the time. No longer there!!
When this song came out, I remember playing it on repeat and never tired of watching the video. The only version that matters. It's 2020 and it still goes hard. #Timeless
Do you ever fall in love with a song that has no relevance to your actual life? Many times I have and then comes the images of a different life where instead of being moved solely by the singing, lyrics, and music my attachment is greater, relevant. This is one of those songs for me.
I'd be honored if some fans of the late 80s/early 90s sound would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of GET HERE IF YOU CAN by Brenda Russell/Oleta Adams and HEAVEN HELP ME by Deon Estus & George Michael on my channel in tribute to the era. Live acoustic with no autotune. Thanks and peace.
Brilliant !! I met Brenda one night (briefly) outside the Waldorf Astoria in Manhattan. We smiled at each other and it was pretty cool. Didn’t say anything…. Just a look and a smile…. She looked beautiful that night and I was with my ex wife (wife at that time). Every time I hear her songs I think of that night…. You have a beautiful voice…. Thanks for being such a Class Act Brenda!! Russ
Ahhh. The Waldorf. My old job. I was there as a bellman for 15 years before they decided to shut it's doors. I got shipped across the street to The W hotel and now they closed too. Now I'm sitting home watching TH-cam videos.

Music is soul stirring powerful. Listen to Pastor Montell Jordan sermon about the power of music on TH-cam he sung "Get It on tonight" back in the day. May I invite you to listen his message/testimony?
This song makes me whole and fulfilled.
Yes
When music had heart and soul
Wonderfully written, arranged, performed..... haunting! Just a beautiful piece of music!

Cuts to the heart
It is criminal how so underrated this song is.
TheLastOfTheFinest80 dude you are so right and that made me laugh
TheLastOfTheFinest80 I agree!!!
+TheLastOfTheFinest80 Agreed. And she wrote this song as well.
+TheLastOfTheFinest80 Fucking A. incredible vocals, great production, truly an amazing song.
+TheLastOfTheFinest80 Yet if Beyonce or Rhianna came up with this then it would be riding the top of the charts for months.
Born in '82... This is another one of those timeless classics I remember hearing as a kid. - February 2023
I’m listening to Brenda Russell Piano In The Dark mid May 2023!Born in 1985
I was born 1980 and growing up I love classic oldies music. Nowadays music has changed and I feel like it will never be the same as it was generations ago. Still I'm truly happy good music is still around.
One of the best songs of 1988. Never fails to give me goosebumps to this day. So deep and soulful.
This song takes me back when I was a young man. I loved it then. So many moons later, I still love this song.
her voice gives me goosebumps, i can't stop listening to this song, she is perfect, todays music has no soul, no emotions, soo sad that we'll never see a master piece like this again!
Verdade
This is beautiful and classy, unlike the smut they put out today(2023)
Such a damn shame no female singer comes even close
True
You are so right
I'm telling you, people, it doesn't get much better than when she sings "when he plays piano, in the dark" I can feel it in my soul. Beautiful!
George Williams I was 14 when this came out. It was a really hot summer in MPLS that year, and this song was everywhere.
You made me smile.
I was 5 when this song came out
George Williams I was in my early 20s getting ready to leave the UK and work for the summer in Greece. I ended up staying there ten years got married and had 3 now adult children how the time flies by.
George Williams you're still adorably cute! 😆
Age 71, still listening to Great Music!
I'm 73!
Awwe. ♤♤ to both comments. Very sweet. This is a beautiful song. I agree. 🎹💕🎶
This song brings back so many memories from my childhood. 1985-1990 was a great time for this type of music.
Samia Williams Me too 🤗 That's all I listen to 70s 80s 90s. I can't be bothered with any new music today doesn't feel right.Probably some but not all just saying.

Same here.
2023 and I’m still feeling this. Silence is broken, no words are spoken.
I’m listening to Brenda Russell Piano In The Dark early January 2023
Right on?
MCMLXXXVIII
One of the best songs of the 80's, & so under rated. Still sounds awesome.
A truly wonderful vocal artist who is undervalued and appreciated. She possesses a beautiful voice and sings songs with meaningful lyrics that always evoke and capture vivid visual images.
They just don't make music like this that speaks to your life and touches your soul thank God for youtube!
AMEN TO WHAT YOU JUST SAID!!!! I couldn't agree with you more!!!!!!
This song is hauntingly beautiful and for those that know good music- it will never go out of style

Imagine if modern music could soothe and warm the inner soul the way this does. Timeless and exuding love with honor and reciprocity.
Timeless is the perfect word… And the way Brenda sings it, my heart breaks every time I hear the passion in her voice. Some songs are just so beautiful it almost hurts to listen to them, this is one such song.
Praise the Lord to allowing me to still enjoying these precious memories for 4 decades 🙏

I listen to this daily!! It's been a favorite since long before I even knew what love was!
Brenda Russell. - Piano in the dark.
She sings this song with true passion. She tells a great story very catchy but emotional too. A sad but lovely song beautifully sung. Very nicely done ✅
Well said.
Man this is just one of those songs that hits you right in the heart. You can feel the emotion from the lyrics, and beautifully composed instrumentals. Truly a timeless classic. I can listen to it on repeat..
Definitely!
Truly beautiful music.
Me too - thanks Landroval
Landroval u nailed it
I love this song!! She was so under rated :(
Agree!! what shame.
yea!!!
yea!!!
Cynthia Mattera How under rated ..here in Brazil was ever an anthem of breathtaking emotion
The production, song writing and performances from the 80s/90s were so good that this song only charted at number 3.
This song is a whole mood. Thirty something years later it still hits me that way.
@shview james Brenda Russell Piano In The Dark is one of my favorite song
🌹♥️🙏🏽
@Chris Great Story! Thanks for sharing! What a moment!

I must agree!
I was listening to this in the car with my kids the other day singing so loud .. hitting every note and they were so annoyed! They dont appreciate it... but I do that's why I'm here! June 2020! 💞🤭
Yo babies dont have an ear for talent!
Time to have them scrub toilets and clean out the cabinets!😅😂😘
Tell them that it's cool to be a hipster now. Gen Z (i.e. kids and teens today) tend to like old music a lot. Tell them they're acting like 80s kids by making fun of older music! lol
They are gonna love this song when they get older because it will remind them of you! They are going to hear this song in the future and say "My mom used to LOVE this !" LOL. So you should pat yourself on the back you just planted the seed for them to appreciate this song. haha
@@elainasmall3481 You are so sweet and kind with your comment.Kids will remember this song with love for their Mother.✌
Embarrassing your kids in public is a parents' job. Embrace it!!!
This is still one of my favorites of all time.
For real!
OMG what a jewel of a song this is! this is pure music, it brings back wonderful feelings of the time when art was at it's best
The summer in 1988 I heard this a lot on the radio. I would turn up the volume up. This song til this day touches my heart. Its a part of my teen years.
It's so true..part of my teenage years as well
I was 14 in the Summer of 1988, right before I started high school. That year was so hot, but it was fun and this song played all the time. So many memories
I was 28 years old love the 80s.
@@paisleyprincess7996, same here. I was the same age, also going into HS. ANd yes, it was a very hot Summer. I was living in NYC , at the time. No longer there!!
PAUL FT I lived in the Twin Cities, and we were having a drought. Man...
a golden treasure from 1988 , a great song from an era when real music was played on the radio
Singers were unique and when you heard one you knew exactly who it was unlike today where they all sound the same
Ha! I know almost all 80s songs. I was trying to figure out why I didn't remember this one... It's because it came out the year I was born lol😂🎉❤
It was the greatest era of music, those 80s were😂🎉! @@jessicacooper8257

The lyrics to this song are amazing, one of the best ever written songs ever
When this song came out, I remember playing it on repeat and never tired of watching the video. The only version that matters. It's 2020 and it still goes hard. #Timeless
Very, very well said!
I like the version of the video where there in a jazz bar in color too
I'm listening to Brenda Russell Piano In The Dark the end of October 2021 Happy and Safe Halloween Day
Brenda never got the notoriety she deserved. Love her music and her voice!! This one is my favorite!!
@Bruce Krall I absolutely agree with you Brenda Russell Piano In The Dark didn't get enough credit! That's classic song!
One of the best songs of all time
You're right, for some unknown reason she didn't and she had several beautiful songs with different artists.
You right, she didn't. The samples got more recognition. But they are also proof of the magnitude of her influence
Amazing song
Do you ever fall in love with a song that has no relevance to your actual life? Many times I have and then comes the images of a different life where instead of being moved solely by the singing, lyrics, and music my attachment is greater, relevant. This is one of those songs for me.
Very well put.
One of the songs that keeps uplifting the spirit no matter what ❤❤😊
This song goes straight to my heart. The combination of this wonderful voice and the great melody is amazing.
❤❤
Russ
Nice memory

Ahhh. The Waldorf. My old job. I was there as a bellman for 15 years before they decided to shut it's doors. I got shipped across the street to The W hotel and now they closed too. Now I'm sitting home watching TH-cam videos.

Great music 🎶 ❤️ love Brenda’s music!!!!🎶🎶❤️🎶🎶
This song is as old as me, but unlike me, this song didn’t age. A true classic
To be fair 33 years old is not old whatsoever. 43 maybe...
Me to I'm 45, I remember this on the old radio. Lol
