The Princess Bride is such a special movie, over 30 years after it was released, the actors are still asked about it , still asked to say lines from it. Every time I see one of these interviews with the cast, you see the joy in their eyes when they talk about the Princess Bride
I once read an interview where Mandy Patinkin claimed that nearly every day since 1987, someone asks him to say The Line. In fact, he sat for an interview with 60 Minutes on a completely unrelated topic, and the first thing out of the reporter's mouth, in the context of this completely sober, adult, serious interview ... was a request to say it. For the record, if I ever have the opportunity, I will immediately and without a shred of hesitation ask him to say it.
To this day, I am struck by how perfect the deliverance of "I want my father back, you son of a bitch" is. And the look on his face as he sticks the sword in even further. That's as good of an acting job as you can ever find, anywhere.
Yup. It's in my personal list of top ten movie moments of all time. Near the top. In my opinion, this movie is the spiritual successor to the Wizard of Oz. Mandy was "in the zone" when he delivered that line.
@@SKBottom Interesting point. Maybe they someone should start a new award to compete with the Academy Awards, but we can award them to people who do a great job at "not acting."
You can tell that for Mandy, that line really was very meaningful to him. I love how he explains that as 30 year old Mandy the line just came out of his mouth and he thought nothing of it. At 60, he really HEARD the line and connected with it. I think he connected with it so well not just because he feels that revenge is futile but I think he spent a lot of his youth hating cancer, feeling that he was robbed of his father and felt the need to 'get even'. As he got older and matured, I believe he realized that the hate and anger was accomplishing nothing.
Hats off to the presenter's silent "Mandy Patinkin, ladies and gentlemen." by only pointing at him, showing he was speechless and also to not spoil the magic of Patinkin's line delivery. Fucking brilliant!
What is amazing about this clip is when he quotes his favourite line from the film (2:29), his rhythm and beat is almost EXACTLY the same as he did it in the film... unbelievable. What an amazing actor and human being...
I think that's probably why Inigo Montoya is my favorite character in the story. Because of his quest, but also because once he resolves it, he hints at what comes after Happily Ever After.
Mandy Patinkin is on my list of TOP TEN male actors. He is PERFECT in the Princess Bride. His sincerity in hating cancer and transferring that hatred into his pursuit of Count Rugen comes from the deepest part of the gut, and it SHOWS. I, like Mandy, hate death with the purplest of purple passions. Bravo, Mandy, your good looks and heartfelt acting has graced more than one movie (Yentl also comes to mind). You Mandy, brought 'old time greatness' to movies in more 'modern' times. Thank you!!!!
And don't forget the scene in The Music of Chance where he walks thru the trailer in blue silk boxers....WHOOOO! I adore his voice, his acting, and....yowza.
Not surprising at all. Everyone I know has a soft spot for this movie. People my age (54) watched it with their children, now we are watching it with our grandchildren. It truly is timeless.
Mandy was soooo good in this film. I remember going to see it one evening when I was in Knoxville ,Tn on business. I was so taken and laughed all through the movie. When I got home a couple of days later I told my best friend and his wife, you have to see this movie.....yes it sounds like a children’s film but it’s made to appeal to adults...you’ll love it! We went to see it that next weekend and they too laughed all through it. It’s still to this day one of my favorite all time films. God bless Rob Reiner!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Mandy stole the show in a movie full of amazing moments. Also, my mother is Spaniard and Mandy played a Spaniard swordsman here, so that detail and fine performance also touched a soft spot in my heart and mind.
They were all incredibly well casted roles, I really hope they do not try to do a remake, that would be the worst thing ever, there is nothing you can do better.
Bless this man and all those who participated in the making of this great film!! I have watched it probably dozens of times since it came out. And his role was so powerful!! While watching this, I realized that the "Line" he refers to, also describes at least in part, what PTSD is. You enlist in the military at a very impressionable age 18-20. You really have no idea who you are at that point in your life even if you don't know it. Then you get trained to kill (to survive). You can't kill things you love so you learn to kill things you hate. I remember coming out of boot-camp knowing I could kill a man at 300 meters with an open sight. Fortunately for me, I was in at the right time, too late for Korea and too early for Vietnam, so I never got to put that skill into practical use. In my opinion, Three years in combat doesn't seem like a lifetime unless you're the one experiencing it. But after Basic and then advanced training your former life seems so far away and so short compared to who you are at that time and the circumstances you are going through at that time. I think part of PTSD is that period when you can still vividly remember the danger and the adrenaline rush of fear, the loss of comrades and the feeling of guilt that you came back and they didn't. Ironically, after those feelings go away, you, in some ways, miss it! So it is hard to live a life of hate and once you defeat that which you hate, your fearful of how you will go on without it! It was indeed a powerful line!
Father, I have failed you for twenty years... Now our misery can end... Somewhere, somewhere close by is a man who can help us... I can not find him alone... I need you... I need you to guide my sword, please... Guide my sword...
Inigo was so interesting and intriguing when I first saw that movie I thought that he was really into the part that is probably why he did so well and can remember the last line he spoke so well. I love Mandy Patinkin
I saw him in New Years Eve at the Music Center in Los Angeles. It eas a one man show....OMG....he was excellent 👌. Music, singing , dialogue and then at the end was The Princess Bride dialogue...i will avenge ny Father.... He was brilliant and we ealjed out there soaring . I had a brand new Jaguar and i opened the top. It was warm and the stars were out.....magical evening!!!
Can anyone else imagine anyone but him playing that part? No one else could have replaced him. He was just perfect. A truly brilliant (and in my opinion underrated) actor; one of the best of all time. The true greats will die with his generation, I'm sorry to say. They don't make anything of real substance anymore. Not like they used to, that's for sure. We really didn't realize how blessed we were to grow up during the time we did. All the greatness there once was is fading away (what little of it there may still be left).
Politically incorrect these days! Inigo Montoya was a Spaniard and should've been played by a Spaniard! Mandy Patinkin is guilty of cultural appropriation! (Sarc)
My mother still yells “have fun storming the castle!” whenever me or my sisters leave the house. I say “you killed my father, prepare to die” whenever my sister’s dog fights (play fights) with my father. Inigo is also my favorite character in the movie. I love him ;-;
I strongly respect him. I mean I don't love him like my mother did (still does) but I have a strong respect for him as an actor and really, you rarely see him in the headlines. He's a forgotten gem in Hollywood.
This man has done great stuff. And they mention that 1 movie all the time. And btw his 2 albums are well done. He wrote a song called raggedy Ann- Brilliant and Buckingham+did a Patty Griffin cover. Now he's super cool. I was born too late to get to see him live. Him&Alan Dale and Spencer Tracy are whats called actor's actor. And can't forget about Oscar Isaac and Mark Ruffalo.
I love Mandy Patinkin in "The Princess Bride", and loved him in Criminal Minds ... but I fully understand why he couldn't stay on as Gideon - he is a gentle soul ... ❤
It would have been magical to hear Mandy recite the line. Unfortunately, they completely ruined the moment by playing the movie audio at the same time.
They're closer to intentionally make interviews appear more personal, if not for the interviewee, in front of a live audience, for those watching on tv. There also instructed to, thus enabling the camera to zoom in, and still have both captured within a tv screen's limited field of view. Given the chance I would definitely ask for a rendition of that classic intro.
I'm a 69 yr old Male and I Love this movie! Pls don't ask me why 'cos I honestly don't know. Oh, wait, Buttercup might have something to do with that! Wallace Shawn was hilarious as well, & who doesn't love Andre The Giant!
Mandy should’ve told him “I am not hard of hearing, are you?” Or “I’m not that into you restrain yourself you’re making yourself look like an idiot, fool!”
He smiles at the end of the interview, because he knows something the interviewer does not know. He is not really left handed.
He was good. But there was a secret the interviewer had also. He is not left handed either.
Jack Turell
I know something none of you know.
The camera person is ambidextrous.
GeekFurious And he made himself immune to iocane powder.
Why do you keep using that word, I don't think it means what you think it means.
XDDDD
I love that he is excited about having played the character. So many actors seem kind of jaded and tired of talking about their classic roles.
The Princess Bride is such a special movie, over 30 years after it was released, the actors are still asked about it , still asked to say lines from it. Every time I see one of these interviews with the cast, you see the joy in their eyes when they talk about the Princess Bride

It's a perfect masterpiece. Am listening to carey elwes book about the making of the movie, it's great

That line is second only to Luke's "I'm a Jedi, like my father before me."
Yup. It's in my personal list of top ten movie moments of all time. Near the top. In my opinion, this movie is the spiritual successor to the Wizard of Oz. Mandy was "in the zone" when he delivered that line.
He wasn't acting. In his mind he was killing the cancer that killed his father.
@@SKBottom Interesting point. Maybe they someone should start a new award to compete with the Academy Awards, but we can award them to people who do a great job at "not acting."
@@SKBottom What you said right there is exactly what acting is. It’s not acting, it’s doing something that is important to you.
Mandy is such a non-hollywood guy, just an amazing honest real person.
That man has been well-loved to be that open with his feelings. :)
I do not think it means what you think it means

The best characters are inigo and the Sicilian
@@reginaldforthright805 Inigo and Miracle Max for me lol

It needs more non binary trans people of color 🤷♂️

nice insight into ptsd due to combat; people dismiss ptsd too much and are more understanding towards physical injuries
Mandy Patinkin is a wonderful actor and he also has an incredible singing voice :)
That gave me chills. Mandy Patinkin is a legend.
My favorite movie of all time. And my favorite character in it too! "Hello, My name is Inigo Montoya, prepare to die!"
Father, I have failed you for twenty years... Now our misery can end... Somewhere, somewhere close by is a man who can help us... I can not find him alone... I need you... I need you to guide my sword, please... Guide my sword...
I just watched the film last week and I'm thinking I want to see it again tonight!
Inigo was so interesting and intriguing when I first saw that movie I thought that he was really into the part that is probably why he did so well and can remember the last line he spoke so well. I love Mandy Patinkin
Proud to say Tht I sang w/ him at Lincoln center this year.
What'd you sing?
Oh thank you so so much for that. That movie meant so much, Peter Falk.....the last line from Peter Falk. Just, thank you.

No wonder the “I want my father back you son of a bitch” sounded so real
My dad died young too, his performance gets me every single time 🥲

What a powerful interview! One of George's best...and that's saying something!
That was my favourite character of the movie! I stil say his line across the house regularly, my kids think I’m nuts
My mother still yells “have fun storming the castle!” whenever me or my sisters leave the house. I say “you killed my father, prepare to die” whenever my sister’s dog fights (play fights) with my father.
Inigo is also my favorite character in the movie. I love him ;-;
I have all always been in love with this man!
Mandy Patinkin is a great man.
Jeffry Willis he sings like an angel.
I strongly respect him. I mean I don't love him like my mother did (still does) but I have a strong respect for him as an actor and really, you rarely see him in the headlines. He's a forgotten gem in Hollywood.
He has/had the reputation as a diva, but I think this interview shows that he's mellowing out.
George, you were the best interviewer ever.
You never put yourself before your guests.
I miss your show
That movie was / is so full of heart and kindness ; with a dash of silliness to boot ! 😂❤
He was so perfect for the part!
you gotta love Mandy Patinkin
Love how the interviewer is so interested bless him
It's also the closest thing you'll ever get to Gideon and Columbo starring in something together.
Holy Crap. I'm on season 5 of homeland......and only just realised that Saul is Inigo Montoya !!
I love him and this character.
This man has done great stuff. And they mention that 1 movie all the time. And btw his 2 albums are well done. He wrote a song called raggedy Ann- Brilliant and Buckingham+did a Patty Griffin cover. Thanks for your help and support towards me ❤️🥰. Pamela 💕
I'd have told that interviewer to please sit back LOL
why is the interviewer SO CLOSE to Mandy give the guy some space!!
I agree - he's leaning in the way police interrogate a suspect!
Big fan of Mandels , he was magnificent! As huxley in grouchland . ......truly talanted man bless him
Mandy is great. He was brilliant as Che in "Evita" on Broadway in 1979-80. He has a gorgeous singing voice.
WOW...He really is awesome!!
Thanks for your help and support towards me
great interview
Ladies and gentlemen, Mandy Patinkin!
Mandy is awesome.
Yes.
He his.
I will love you forever, Mandy Patinkin.
Great actor. Seen him in Chicago hope and Criminal minds😎
That interviewer must be thinking of crawling down his throat and perhaps taking control of his body, why else would you need to be THAT close?
I thought maybe he wanted to kiss him or something.
Rough Patches Cause thats the only reason to get so close to other people, lol.
surprised he didn't piddle on Mandy's pants leg.
He's interviewing his idol, someone he can't believe he's being allowed to interview. It's adorable
the interviewer did well to stay quiet. classy interview
Interviewer is about to fall off his chair. Relax a little.
I thought they were gonna start making out.
Too good, as I inch my phone screen inches from my face in anticipation.
That was beautiful. TFS
Mandy IS a HERO ~for being a STORYBOOK hero~made into film ( @ 26yrs. old ).
They were leaning in so far I was waiting for a kiss
OMG OMG OMG! To hear his backstory OMG!!!!
Mandy is possibly the greatest living actor we have.
F Murray Abraham
This is the spainard with the heavy accent?!?!?
He's such a sweet guy.
Thanks for your help and support towards me ❤️🥰
Who else thought these 2 were gonna kiss from the way they were leaning into each other? I'm talking one of the 5 greatest kisses of all time.
And just like that..I cried...maybe there is some of that in all of us
that was wonderful
I never made the connection that Saul = Inigo Montoya until today.
One of the best movies ever!!!!!!!
My generation didn't grow up with Ben Hur, but that hasn't been forgotten.
That man is profound.
Wow, I had no idea that was him. I didn't know Mandy till Dead Like Me.
Now its time to become a bloodthirsty pirate.
I love Mandy Patinkin in "The Princess Bride", and loved him in Criminal Minds ... but I fully understand why he couldn't stay on as Gideon - he is a gentle soul ... ❤
Amazing.
He gave us a classic Halloween character. Wear anything and a name label that says......My name is... Inigo Mintoya.
GEORGE!!! SIT>>>BACK!!!!!!!!!!
Iñigo Montoya is my fav character
Lovely.
Legend.
god i love that movie
The correct replacement for "ass" is "sweet bippie" in this context.

About 40% of commenters on here have a problem with that.
Mandy is a 'Reaper' at heart. =))
The most perfect movie ever made.
His accent is like the Nanny accent😂😂
actually you were 35 when you played inigo!
Pretty powerful story.
Wondering if anyone involved with the money knew that it would be so iconic?
I'm a 69 yr old Male and I Love this movie! Pls don't ask me why 'cos I honestly don't know. Oh, wait, Buttercup might have something to do with that! Wallace Shawn was hilarious as well, & who doesn't love Andre The Giant!
Lol @ how close the interviewer is leaning toward him
Este tipo es superior . Súper atractivo
Jason Gideon suddenly became loads more badass.
He was the proto Jack Sparrow...
As in a secundary character that's cooler than the protagonist.
So basically, Han Solo
Ahhh you've fallen victims to one of the classic blunders of all time!! That's not really his favorite line!
I wonder if he can still fence...
Wonderful* ;)
Why is the interviewer sitting so close to him?
Is that interviewer the close talker from Seinfeld?
When I was younger, I sincerely thought that man was Spanish. 😂
INCONCEIVABLE!!!!
Host needs to like... backup a little bit.
Backup or commit to the kiss whatever just do something.
Mandy should’ve told him “I am not hard of hearing, are you?” Or “I’m not that into you restrain yourself you’re making yourself look like an idiot, fool!”
Could he sit closer to Patinkin?
