I got to say I met Cary 2 years ago in Knoxville TN at a Fanboy convention. Now if you have never been to one they are really alot of fun.....now for contest I am a disabled vet who has had massive spinal cord surgery and must use a cane to walk. I was standing in line (over an hour with about another hour maybe more to go) to get up to meet him. I have a DAV hat on usually because, well im proud to be what I am. As I was standing there a woman walks up too me and says " Thank you for your service sir, Cary says Vets dont wait in his line". She then walked me to the front of the line I looked back at all the people and said what about them? They got here first.......noone had an issue with it and upon reaching the front Cary motioned me up, shook my hand and said "Its an honor to shake your hand sir" I was able to get his autograph and photo with him free of charge (usually costs like $40). I was able to talk to him for a few min as well. I tell you this only because I want the world to know the kind of person he is and what an impact he made on me that day!!
First let me thank you for you service and sacrifice for us and this country! Second, your story speaks volumes of the kind of man Cary is and how he feels in his adopted country where he now resides. I wish more celebrities were as humble as he! God bless you sir! 🇺🇲

It came out when I was a sophomore in highschool and I spent decades looking for my own "Wesley". I'm happy to say I finally found him and we've been together for 23 years. Unfortunately, I had to go through a few "Humperdincks" but it was worth it. I've always admired Cary the more I followed his career. He's greatful, humble and truly talented. At Tulane University, in 1992, 5 years after it came out, they played The Princess Bride in a large auditorium-it was packed, and when the movie’s audio failed, hundreds of voices carried on the dialogue word for word!
I met Cary Elwes at Powell's books in Portland, OR. He did a book signing for "As You Wish". He went over the allotted time, because he wanted to be sure everyone's books were signed. He signed over 2,000 books that night. I was among the final people in line, he must have been exhausted, his hand must have hurt like crazy, and yet, he spoke to to me as graciously and kindly as though I were th first person there! I thanked him for his time, and he said simply, "it is my honor".
"Was it a comedy, was it a fairy tale, was it a kid's movie, and adult movie, was it an action film ...." Yes it was all of those. That's why it's a classic
His accents were great, but the impressions weren't spot on. His Andre wasn't as playful as in real life, and his Rob Reiner sounded more like Peter Falk, but they were entertaining nonetheless. He's a great storyteller.
I always feel like Elwes should have been bigger than he was. Such a dude, and TPB is my fav movie. Wore the VHS out and memorised every line as a teenager. Such magic.
I loved Hot Shots, the first Saw, even The Crush, never see a movie like that today. Almost forgot about Days Of Thunder. But I've always thought he should have been a bigger movie star. I know he says he's had a blessed career. But I see a very Alexander Skarsgard like quality to him. He's shown his real acting prowess and psychotic intensity in movies like Kiss The Girls.
I saw this movie in the theater with a whole bunch of friends when I was 13. When I got home, I insisted that I would babysit my siblings because my parents had to go see it. It remains one of my parents' favorites (and mine) to this day.
My husband and I rented Princess Bride and later he bought it for me. I fell in love with the movie the first time Westley said, "As you wish" because they were almost like what my husband would say to me, but in Spanish, whenever I asked him for anything big or small. It was his way of saying "I love you." He was my prince and hero and I truly miss his gentle loving presence in my life.
I rode in a taxi with my late mother to deliver the manuscript for The Princess Bride to Bill Goldman's apartment on West 58th. He was one of her best clients! This film helped put me through private school!
I first saw Princess Bride on a transatlantic flight. Fell immediately in love with it, and was one of the best PR spokespersons for the film. Harassed everyone I knew to watch it until they did. I know they did because the next time I saw them they thanked me profusely for turning them onto it. The Princess Bride will prove to be The Wizard of Oz of all the generations to come. Well done! I wrote the ceremony for my wedding and I had, as the first line, "Marriage is what brings us together today." It was just delivered like a regular sentence, no comedic effect, but people who know, knew. Lol.
This is quite possibly the best interview I've ever watched, completely engaging start to finish. I'm blown away by this interviewer's ability to match Cary's energy and delivery in a way that supports and enhances the whole situation while not once stealing the focus. Brilliant, indeed!
William Goldman said the writing of The Princess Bride flowed out of him, and the screenplay did the same. This movie was blessed. One of the greatest films ever. The fencing scene was brilliant, a testament to the hard work Mandy and Cary were willing to put into it.
He's English by birth. Don't exactly know why he uses an American accent ( strongly peppered with an English one ) in an interview. Very agreeable ' chap.'
I fell in love with this movie when it first came out when I was 21 yrs old and years later, I introduced my two boys to it and they still quote it to this day. We watch it from time to time and it gets better every time we watch it. Such a classic!! Thank you all for the great memories and laughter.
My favorite teacher ever, high school English teacher, asked us to read this book as an assignment. I thought, "The Princess Bride? Is this some book for little girls?" I wanted no part of it but wound up loving it. And I still watch the movie every few years. Still love it to this day.
My favorite related story with a tribute to The Princess Bride is when my work’s assistant had to justify a full size car to accommodate my 6’5” height. Her four word justification was “driver of unusual size.”
When we moved halfway across the country and crammed myself, wife, and two children into my sister in laws spare bedroom until we found a place, this was one of the DVDs we had on hand. Both my wife and I sleep with the television on, and we would put this on repeat for the night. Man I cannot speak highly enough about the place this movie holds with my family. To this day I tell my wife Shut up witch.....because I know how she will respond. You guys truly made a timeless movie. This is a movie my grandchildren will see, I have no doubt about that.

The book is terrific. My husband and I saw it at the movies and when it was over no one in the theater moved we all sat there we didn’t want it to be over. We absolutely loved it.

Princess Bride was one of the greatest films a kid could possibly grow up with. Along with other classics like The Goonies, or Labyrinth, or The Dark Crystal, or the Neverending Story. The 80s and 90s were a cultural treasure trove compared to the nonsense kids have to contend with today. I was so very lucky to have been born when I was. What a time to be a kid.
Don't just reminisce, continue the tradition. My kids have seen every one of them and continue to re-watch them every now and then. I will not deprive them of such magic.

Cary is an amazing man! I was heartbroken when he suffered a medical emergency and was hospitalized earlier this year. I loved this interview and immediately purchased his book for my Kindle! The Princess Bride came out when I was a Junior in HS and I stopped counting at 47 times I've seen it... it's "inconceivable" now how many times I've seen it! God bless you, Cary and all the cast. My girlfriend in college wanted to watch this movie with me (this was 1989) and I resisted because I thought it was a cheesy romance movie. She insisted and since then I've probably watched it 100 times. Truly a classic movie!
I have 5 children and have just had the pleasure of introducing my two youngest children to my favourite movie, The Princess Bride, in a few years I will introduce it to my grandchildren...this is a classic, one of those rare movies where all the cast fit the roles perfectly and the set, story all come together beautifully to create a timeless peace. I can't remember enjoying 40 minutes on TH-cam more than this; what a wonderful, gracious and modest man! Good questioning by the interviewer too. I guess it happens all round the world, but when my daughter was at Uni 15 years ago the kids she was with used to have Princess Bride parties; they'd dress up and re-enact the whole movie, word for word, they all knew the script off by heart! (I think I know most of it too, Princess Bride and Bladerunner are my two very favouritist movies)
We wore out our first video tape of The Princess Bride...ran thru a DVD...now on a Blu-ray version. One of our all-time favorites, and always will be. Great interview.
He was in 2 classic fantasies if you count robin hood as fantasy. Men in tights was genius. The meta break where they all pull out their scripts was genius. May Mel brooks always be remembered as the genius he was.
In the late 80's, my men's group pastor at my church, showed it for us, and said that the care with which you "treated" buttercup was a genuinely romantic gesture, and we should pay attention to our wives with such care. It's been a favorite ever since.
When I showed Princess Bride to my daughter, I could see the bit of "what is this?" for the first ten minutes or so, then she was into it and laughing her head off. Such a great movie! I gotta say though that if I were casting the part of Vincent Price, I would cast Mr. Elwes. His soft spoken voice and erudite accent would make him perfect! That he has a face that could work too is all the better! Such a fun video!
I picked this book to fill a Book with a Subtitle in the 52 Book Challenge 2023 but it's sitting in Book by a Comedian right now. This is the very first book I've ever listened to that kept my attention. The full 7 hours! I bought an Aux cord and plugged my phone into the car stereo system so my husband and I could both listen to it. I borrowed it through Libby and did the audio version. I'm SOOO glad I did! I think Cary's voice, his imitations, and the others that joined him just make it something that is worth having. We went to a book store and bought the book too. Thank you Cary! You did a great job!
How can you forget his AMAZING performance as the lead in "Crush", opposite a young Alicia Silverstone?! Then there are bit parts like what he did in "Twister," but any real fan of his MUST see crush.

2 things. 1st- its was an everything movie. Kids, action, drama, comedy. It had it all. 2nd- that sword fight is actually ranks amongst the top of all sword fight in cinema history.

People asking why he sounds so American have to remember that he moved to the US in 1981 to study acting at Sarah Lawrence College in New York and has basically lived and worked in the US ever since. That's more then half of his life living in America, its bound to effect his accent.

The Sword fight is so memorable partly because of the musical cues and sound effects that make it so rhythmic. We all remember every move and every sword clank of that fight. It’s a dance and it works so brilliantly.
This is so sweet. My boyfriend bought this movie for me. He said "Here, you will like this" after I went in deep mourning from another movie we saw. I started saying "as you wish" to my restaurant customers. It seemed a polite way to get along with grumpy customers, while wrapping myself in an aura of love and kindness. Thanks for posting this. So, I was at church (Catholic) for my youngest daughter's first confession. The priest was talking to the parents as the kids lined up and we're all sitting in the pews in the church. He was Irish and his accent was so thick (this was in America) we couldn't understand a word. My husband looks over to me and whispers, "Marriage..." doing the voice from the priest in the movie, and I lost it. I started laughing and could not stop. It was so, so inappropriate but hilarious. People giving us dirty looks because once I started laughing he started laughing. Fun Princess Bride memory for us hehe
I did that swordfight scene as Westley, with my fellow actor Billy McDowell, for our stage combat and dialect exams combined, as college freshmen. Pure joy rehearsing and performing with accents, righthanded, lefthanded and all. Brings back such great memories. Glad to say we aced it!
The Princess Bride is my favorite movie of all time! Even my very macho late husband loved it (much to his surprise), as well as every person I've shown it to. It's one of those movies you can watch over and over and never get bored with...a true classic.
Back in ‘88 I watched this movie daily after work (just outta high school). Quoting the whole thing line for line front to back in months. To this day, as I’m at work, I run through the movie, line for line, word for word. There’s a lot of movies I love. Why is this one an obsession? The mix of American comedy with British dry sarcasm? About 20 years ago I showed this movie to fourth graders on my last day of a 5 week substitute teaching gig. None of them had seen or heard of it before, so I wasn't sure how they'd like it - they absolutely loved it.
wow when he saids their instructor and swordsman was teachers from the Errol Flynn and Burt Lancaster films in the beginning then at end he saids they had to watch Sea Hawk and Robin Hood gave me goose bumbs. I was taking my family on vacation, a long road trip. So my wife and I and four daughters, two in high school and one in Jr high, began to play out the Princess Bride, speaking all the lines from memory. I had not seen the story but was intrigued enough that I saw it at my earliest opportunity. It is an amazingly well played tale.
Music was good but it still baffles me how Knopler made it into the R&R HOF (at least how he got in before some of the actual great acts of the 70's and 80's like Styx or Pat Benatar)

As a band, they inspired virtually no one - of the thousands of musicians I know, not a single one of them points to DS as one of their inspirations. Not only that, they won a single Grammy for Money for Nothing...no other song of their's ever won anything (Sultans of Swing was the only other song of their's even nominated). Yeah, yeah, yeah, you'll come back with the fact that they "won" three other Grammy's - one was for best engineering on Brother in Arms...that's not really a band award now is it? Another was for best video for Money for Nothing...can't count that - it has nothing to do with the music and they already won for that song anyway so you can't count it twice. The last was for the "best surround sound album"...whatever the fuck that is (again, not really a band award). They haven't even played since '99...and there is zero demand for them to play again. I don't know why you brought up Queen but I assure you, DS was NEVER as big as Queen. Not even close. Queen put out 14 albums from '73 to '91 and one more after Freddy's death. 16 albums in 18 years...that's insane...DS can suck a dick if they think their 6 albums in 13 years is anywhere close to that. I'm not sure how they are counting albums but their wiki page says they have had 18 #1 albums...not sure how accurate that is...but safe to say, it's a great number more than DS ever dreamed of (they might have had two). Their performance at Live Aid is widely considered the greatest performance in rock history. Queen is on the Mount Rushmore of rock bands...Dire Straights might make a top 300 list. Might. That you would put DS up with Queen is absurd. But it just occurred to me that you already know how stupid that is and you're just trolling me. If that's the case...good one, you got me. P.S. I just showed my 19 year old this thread and he said, "Dire Straits as good as Queen? That's pure jackassery."

Just finished the book. Fantastic read. I highly suggest it to anyone who loves this movie but hasn’t read it... even if you only have a first grade reading level; Stumble through it. You won’t regret it.

Most of my family (lightly) hates me for this, but BOTH of us sisters were involved in this. I just take the heat. I was MoH to my sister's wedding and raised $2000 for charity to get the officiant to say the word "Mawwigde". They have been happily married since 1991 and are still going strong.
I first saw Princess Bride 20 years after it was released. Cary was so handsome (Pretty really, but I always loved that look on a man.) This was such a great interview. Cary seems so down to earth and relatable. I just bought Princess Bride for my grandson's birthday. I know he is going to be so angry with me, that I bought him a "girl" movie. But, the movie has something for everyone, and it still has Cary for me.
I love how his English accent slips through with certain words, but you can tell he's been in the States for a long, long time. The combination of accents sounds fantastic!

I first saw Princess Bride on a transatlantic flight. Fell immediately in love with it, and was one of the best PR spokespersons for the film. Harassed everyone I knew to watch it until they did. I know they did because the next time I saw them they thanked me profusely for turning them onto it. The Princess Bride will prove to be The Wizard of Oz of all the generations to come. Well done! I wrote the ceremony for my wedding and I had, as the first line, "Marriage is what brings us together today." It was just delivered like a regular sentence, no comedic effect, but people who know, knew. Lol.

William Goldman said the writing of The Princess Bride flowed out of him, and the screenplay did the same. This movie was blessed. One of the greatest films ever. The fencing scene was brilliant, a testament to the hard work Mandy and Cary were willing to put into it.
Princess Bride is a classic... And the reason is that each actor was so well cast. Inconcievable!

I fell in love with this movie when it first came out when I was 21 yrs old and years later, I introduced my two boys to it and they still quote it to this day. We watch it from time to time and it gets better every time we watch it. Such a classic!! Thank you all for the great memories and laughter.

My favorite teacher ever, high school English teacher, asked us to read this book as an assignment. I thought, "The Princess Bride? Is this some book for little girls?" I wanted no part of it but wound up loving it. And I still watch the movie every few years. Still love it to this day.
They need to re-release this for the theater again.
My favorite related story with a tribute to The Princess Bride is when my work’s assistant had to justify a full size car to accommodate my 6’5” height. Her four word justification was “driver of unusual size.”

When we moved halfway across the country and crammed myself, wife, and two children into my sister in laws spare bedroom until we found a place, this was one of the DVDs we had on hand. Both my wife and I sleep with the television on, and we would put this on repeat for the night. Man I cannot speak highly enough about the place this movie holds with my family.
To this day I tell my wife Shut up witch.....because I know how she will respond.
You guys truly made a timeless movie. This is a movie my grandchildren will see, I have no doubt about that.

The book is terrific. My husband and I saw it at the movies and when it was over no one in the theater moved we all sat there we didn’t want it to be over. We absolutely loved it.

Princess Bride was one of the greatest films a kid could possibly grow up with. Along with other classics like The Goonies, or Labyrinth, or The Dark Crystal, or the Neverending Story. The 80s and 90s were a cultural treasure trove compared to the nonsense kids have to contend with today. I was so very lucky to have been born when I was. What a time to be a kid.
Don't just reminisce, continue the tradition. My kids have seen every one of them and continue to re-watch them every now and then. I will not deprive them of such magic.

Cary is an amazing man! I was heartbroken when he suffered a medical emergency and was hospitalized earlier this year. I loved this interview and immediately purchased his book for my Kindle! The Princess Bride came out when I was a Junior in HS and I stopped counting at 47 times I've seen it... it's "inconceivable" now how many times I've seen it! God bless you, Cary and all the cast. Rest in Peace to all those we've lost....Andre to name one. 🙏💜

My girlfriend in college wanted to watch this movie with me (this was 1989) and I resisted because I thought it was a cheesy romance movie. She insisted and since then I've probably watched it 100 times. Truly a classic movie!

I have 5 children and have just had the pleasure of introducing my two youngest children to my favourite movie, The Princess Bride, in a few years I will introduce it to my grandchildren...this is a classic, one of those rare movies where all the cast fit the roles perfectly and the set, story all come together beautifully to create a timeless peace. I guess it happens all round the world, but when my daughter was at Uni 15 years ago the kids she was with used to have Princess Bride parties; they'd dress up and re-enact the whole movie, word for word, they all knew the script off by heart! (I think I know most of it too, Princess Bride and Bladerunner are my two very favouritist movies)
We wore out our first video tape of The Princess Bride...ran thru a DVD...now on a Blu-ray version. One of our all-time favorites, and always will be. Great interview.
He was in 2 classic fantasies if you count robin hood as fantasy. Men in tights was genius. The meta break where they all pull out their scripts was genius. May Mel brooks always be remembered as the genius he was.

My all time favorite movie
In the late 80's, my men's group pastor at my church, showed it for us, and said that the care with which you "treated" buttercup was a genuinely romantic gesture, and we should pay attention to our wives with such care. It's been a favorite ever since.

When I showed Princess Bride to my daughter, I could see the bit of "what is this?" for the first ten minutes or so, then she was into it and laughing her head off. Such a great movie! I gotta say though that if I were casting the part of Vincent Price, I would cast Mr. Elwes. His soft spoken voice and erudite accent would make him perfect! That he has a face that could work too is all the better! Such a fun video!
I picked this book to fill a Book with a Subtitle in the 52 Book Challenge 2023 but it's sitting in Book by a Comedian right now.
This is the very first book I've ever listened to that kept my attention. The full 7 hours! I bought an Aux cord and plugged my phone into the car stereo system so my husband and I could both listen to it. I borrowed it through Libby and did the audio version. I'm SOOO glad I did! I think Cary's voice, his imitations, and the others that joined him just make it something that is worth having.
We went to a book store and bought the book too. Thank you Cary! You did a great job!

(I saw the movie 20-25 years ago. It is obviously time to see it again).
2 things. 1st- its was an everything movie. Kids, action, drama, comedy. It had it all. 2nd- that sword fight is actually ranks amongst the top of all sword fight in cinema history.

People asking why he sounds so American have to remember that he moved to the US in 1981 to study acting at Sarah Lawrence College in New York and has basically lived and worked in the US ever since. That's more then half of his life living in America, its bound to effect his accent.
If you listen closely, you can still bits and pieces of his British accent.
Actually, he pronounces American names American and things about himself in kind of a mid-Atlantic mush.
He doesn't sound American at all. Obvious British accent.

I remember seeing this movie for the first time . I loved it then, and still love it now! I can probably recite it word for word, I’ve watched it so many times over the years. My kids love it and now my grandkids watch it with me.

The Sword fight is so memorable partly because of the musical cues and sound effects that make it so rhythmic. We all remember every move and every sword clank of that fight. It’s a dance and it works so brilliantly.

This is so sweet. My boyfriend bought this movie for me. He said "Here, you will like this" after I went in deep mourning from another movie we saw. I started saying "as you wish" to my restaurant customers. It seemed a polite way to get along with grumpy customers, while wrapping myself in an aura of love and kindness. Thanks for posting this. So, I was at church (Catholic) for my youngest daughter's first confession. The priest was talking to the parents as the kids lined up and we're all sitting in the pews in the church. He was Irish and his accent was so thick (this was in America) we couldn't understand a word. My husband looks over to me and whispers, "Marriage..." doing the voice from the priest in the movie, and I lost it. I started laughing and could not stop. It was so, so inappropriate but hilarious. People giving us dirty looks because once I started laughing he started laughing. Fun Princess Bride memory for us hehe

I did that swordfight scene as Westley, with my fellow actor Billy McDowell, for our stage combat and dialect exams combined, as college freshmen.
Pure joy rehearsing and performing with accents, righthanded, lefthanded and all. Brings back such great memories. Glad to say we aced it!

The Princess Bride is my favorite movie of all time! Even my very macho late husband loved it (much to his surprise), as well as every person I've shown it to. It's one of those movies you can watch over and over and never get bored with...a true classic.

Back in ‘88 I watched this movie daily after work (just outta high school). Quoting the whole thing line for line front to back in months. To this day, as I’m at work, I run through the movie, line for line, word for word. There’s a lot of movies I love. Why is this one an obsession? The mix of American comedy with British dry sarcasm? Something is balanced, lovable and honest about this film. Thanks Cary for the book and this interview.
About 20 years ago I showed this movie to fourth graders on my last day of a 5 week substitute teaching gig. None of them had seen or heard of it before, so I wasn't sure how they'd like it - they absolutely loved it.
The "As You Wish" documentary is excellent too, also on TH-cam.
To me this is the WIZARD OF OZ of it's day and now forever. Enchanting and beautiful film.
wow when he saids their instructor and swordsman was teachers from the Errol Flynn and Burt Lancaster films in the beginning then at end he saids they had to watch Sea Hawk and Robin Hood gave me goose bumbs. I was taking my family on vacation, a long road trip. So my wife and I and four daughters, two in high school and one in Jr high, began to play out the Princess Bride, speaking all the lines from memory.
I had not seen the story but was intrigued enough that I saw it at my earliest opportunity. It is an amazingly well played tale.
The music by Mark Knopfler was one of the things that set this far above most films.
To me the movie itself is a homage to both Mark Knopfler and for Dire Straits.
Music was good but it still baffles me how Knopler made it into the R&R HOF (at least how he got in before some of the actual great acts of the 70's and 80's like Styx or Pat Benatar)

What are you talking about? Dire Straits were as big as Queen when the band retired. There songs are still iconic and Knopfler wrote them.
@@Chiungalla79 I want some of what you are smoking. Straits had one decent album and one VERY GOOD album. The other four (yes, only four more...only six albums in their catalogue) were garbage. As a band, they inspired virtually no one - of the thousands of musicians I know, not a single one of them points to DS as one of their inspirations.
Not only that, they won a single Grammy for Money for Nothing...no other song of their's ever won anything (Sultans of Swing was the only other song of their's even nominated). Yeah, yeah, yeah, you'll come back with the fact that they "won" three other Grammy's - one was for best engineering on Brother in Arms...that's not really a band award now is it? Another was for best video for Money for Nothing...can't count that - it has nothing to do with the music and they already won for that song anyway so you can't count it twice. The last was for the "best surround sound album"...whatever the fuck that is (again, not really a band award). They haven't even played since '99...and there is zero demand for them to play again.
I don't know why you brought up Queen but I assure you, DS was NEVER as big as Queen. Not even close. Queen put out 14 albums from '73 to '91 and one more after Freddy's death. 16 albums in 18 years...that's insane...DS can suck a dick if they think their 6 albums in 13 years is anywhere close to that. I'm not sure how they are counting albums but their wiki page says they have had 18 #1 albums...not sure how accurate that is...but safe to say, it's a great number more than DS ever dreamed of (they might have had two). Their performance at Live Aid is widely considered the greatest performance in rock history.
Queen is on the Mount Rushmore of rock bands...Dire Straights might make a top 300 list. Might. That you would put DS up with Queen is absurd. But it just occurred to me that you already know how stupid that is and you're just trolling me. If that's the case...good one, you got me.

You are using arbitrary standards that have nothing to do with my point and you know that. I never said they won the most prices. I never said they wrote the most albums. I never said they are considered as big as Queen in hindsight.
But back then they generated comparable crowds and sales as Queen did. They were a household name and still are for people of 50+.
Of cause Queens fame aged better. And of cause they put out more albums, which is pretty much easier if all band members write songs mind you. And yes, they won more prices. I`m a huge Queen fan myself.

I first saw Princess Bride 20 years after it was released. Cary was so handsome (Pretty really, but I always loved that look on a man.) This was such a great interview. Cary seems so down to earth and relatable. I just bought Princess Bride for my grandson's birthday. I know he is going to be so angry with me, that I bought him a "girl" movie. But, the movie has something for everyone, and it still has Cary for me.
