    • @fry.master
      @fry.master ปีที่แล้ว +3

      it's an M car, brother; once it's warm you should be able to thrash it like you are racing for the CUP without failure. Not saying you should ever hit potholes or drive without sense, simply you can do whatever you want with the pedals + wheel on flat and level tarmac. This transmission is designed to shift hard and fast, make you say "holy shit I cant believe that didn't break something" right as it changes up and does the bang again. The science behind how that NA v10 M5 is fast without massive torque is a function of this.

    • @240TechGuy
      @240TechGuy ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@SupraSav Part ownership handled poorly and part MFR not building to be reliable past 100k miles or 10+ years. BMW really can make reliable cars, they just do not want to. This 16 year old BMW with V10 already has wire insulation issues on its harness to the SMG yet the Z3 can be reliable (albeit hoses, maintenance, belt components) even after 20 years. Then the Z4 came out and started using parts bin where the car literally falls apart after 6 years.

I still have my 530xi, but after I bought the 550i with a broken engine, it was a pain to get the transmission issue sorted on it. After two years of ownership and a whole year of it sitting with my mechanic, I decided to sell and it was one of the best car decisions ever! I look forward to seeing more videos on this car.

    99% of the owners I’ve met in my life of e60 m5s bought them knowing the issues and still found it worth it for the experience most of them had.
    If you buy one just have money to fix it. A rare and special car that will probably never be made again or like it . For a generation for a class for a time that car is iconic. I hate the looks and interior of it but that sound is just the best.
    I’ve owned e39 m5, e46 m3, e85 z4m, e36 m3 vert, e34 540i and m235i currently still own the m235i and looking at a e92 m3 weekend .
    Bmws are so interactive and the peoples cars. It’s involved and the feel not much in the price range can compare. Porsche is the goal but bmw is the love still and will always be. A nice gt3 or gt4 Porsche

    For those in market for an S85 V10 bmw m5/m6:
    - Get proof of maintenance done on car, previous owner should have many recites and meticulous knowledge of records
    - Proof rod bearings were replaced
    - Proof throttle actuators replaced
    - Get a sample of the oil
    - Get car inspected
    - No more than 2-3 previous owners
    - Under 120,000 miles
    - SMG service as well
    Next thoroughly test drive the car, put it through at least 10 ignition cycles. A lot of people with shitty examples will clear codes, some wont come back for a few cycles.
    Cycle through the gears yourself (Use S6 shift mode)
    If all of the above passes you should have a decent car. Don’t buy cheap ones, and don’t buy one from someone that cannot show you proof of maintenance.
    Invoices do not count as proof, should be completed work orders with Vin matching the car.
    All in all the M5/M6 V10 is probably on of the most fun cars you have if all is in order and it is straight piped.

    my neighbor has been using her M5 as a daily driver, cold starts and hard drive offs, regular fuel, next to zero maintenance and it magically does not break or leave her stranded, its unbelievable... there is a long flare between shifts like the SMG has delayed shifts, I'm positive shes driving with multiple check engine lights on...

    Back in the day, I looked at a used Manual M3 convertible. I didn't love the manual. So I tried an SMG. That sucked too. The top dog of BMW at the time could have put in a dual clutch, but he thought we would prefer the SMG!

    Mad respect to you for choosing to buy this platform. Would it make more sense to spend $5,000 to $6,000 and buy all of the necessary hardware/parts and swap out that troublesome SMG transmission for a ZF 8-speed automatic, so that way your transmission problems would be solved once and for all?

    • @gtmike916
      @gtmike916 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honestly I would. The ZF-8 Performs close to if not on par with most DCT transmissions. Also the SMG from what I heard isn’t very good for daily use due to how rough it is. Not to mention the ZF-8 will get better fuel mileage due to gearing.

      If you're gonna swap out the transmission anyway just swap it to the manual lol

      nah the SMG is pretty much developed around the S85 engine, and if he’s gonna swap to any gearbox it should be the manual tbh

    I'm surprised at the condition of those wires on that harness and the fact that those wires crumble like that in that specific harness. I own two BMW's right now and both are older and one has been fully swapped out for another BMW (2002 330CI swapped out for the entire drive train and interior of a 2006 E46 M3) except the body. Meaning I have really worked on and wrenched on these BMW's for real and deep. As well I've owned a few others in my time and I have worked on them and done extensive repairs and mods etc. (Similar to you guys) Yet I've NEVER seen a BMW harness crap out like that! Of course it's totally possible that somehow BMW designed that one part and skimped on the wiring materials and none of the other major wiring parts of the car or wiring in any of the other models of those years. But I HIGHLY HIGHLY DOUBT IT. I say it was contracted out by BMW and made by a THIRD PARTY MANUFACTURER. But I could be wrong of course.
