One of the delicious ironies of the 41st millenium: the Inquisition would love to have interrogators who can break even Space Marines, but there is no way a member of the Unforgiven would ever work that closely with the Inquisition.

The chaplain are especially frightening. They’re still space marines and can kill someone in the time it takes someone to blink. But these guys know how to take their time.
So you know how Lion El Johnson has just an instinctual and inhuman even amongst his brothers level of battlefield acumen and by extension his sons? now take that ability and apply it to psychology. Makes Interrogator chaplains even more terrifying of just the thought of you saying a sentence and them instantly figuring out how to break you. Swear to the emperor man if 10 interrogator chaplains went to work with the inquisition for a week they would cut the yearly chaos incursions in the imperium in half figuratively and literally. PS: can someone pray to something to have a 40k version of Detroit become human? but instead of a melodramatic robot you're an interrogator chaplain?

I agree totally. All primarchs a preternatural ability the lions most well known is strategic warfare but he also cast a shadow of fear akin to a predator who waits even amongst his brothers. None of his siblings truly understood him but ALL respected him. I think the fight with leman made built a bond stronger than most because war is really either understood

You know, the whole video I was calling bullshit - how could any of this be justified in-narrative? It's too extreme, too over the top to be anything other than a cool, grimdark affectation. There could be no meat here, no depth, but then...then you pointed out that it's not the Chaos Gods that are the worst thing in the galaxy. Or rather, they're just learning from mortals. And oh, suddenly these fellows make complete sense. X) Goodness, they are rather spooky, aren't they.
I recently listened to the audiobook version of Lion El'Johnson: Lord of the First and I couldn't help but notice that they made it a point to push the fact that the Lion was indeed the first and the most like his father with the rest just being copies of copies. I can't help but think this will play an important role to the 1st Primarch's reintroduction.

My favourite bit in the book Master of Sanctity which covers the highest ranking Chaplains in the DAs, talks about Asmodai starting ranting, then discusses someone's thoughts who is not listening to him... before concluding telling us that Asmodai's raving has come to an end. He's a very angry fellow, and it amuses me no end.

To prove it, he swore to extract the confession due from the renegade himself. It was not the first oath Uzziel had ever sworn, but it proved the most difficult to fulfil. The traitor had roundly mocked Uzziel, the Dark Angels and the Emperor. He told gleeful stories of his hundreds of campaigns as a mercenary, an endless catalogue of rape, murder and torture. Uzziel was not a man who shrank from violence, but he believed that it needed to serve a greater, righteous purpose. The wanton slaughter of the Fallen Angel’s tales had sickened him, and he had to suppress a powerful urge to rip the wretch before him limb from limb, to pay him back in kind for each of his deeds. Uzziel had fought off his immediate desire for vengeance. First, the confession. The Fallen Angel had seen the hatred in Uzziel’s eyes and laughed. ‘What’s the matter, whelp, do my stories frighten you? Can’t you stand to hear how a real Marine goes to war? You can keep your cowls and your prayer beads, monk. A true warrior goes into battle with lust in his heart, lust to spill the red blood of victory and taste the glory of war. That’s what you lack and that’s why you’ll always lose!’ Those haunting words were with Uzziel even now, echoing sickeningly inside his mind as the Thunderhawk screamed through the atmosphere. Despite the passing of time, the revulsion the chaplain felt recalling that moment was immediate and real. He relived his rage at the renegade’s insolence and his desire to make him pay for that insolence. Back there, in the interrogation cell, he had let his emotions overwhelm him for just a moment. Uzziel had backhanded the traitor, then grabbed him by the hair and slammed his head hard against the stone wall. ‘You seem to have forgotten which one of us lies in chains, filth!’ he had shouted. ‘I’ve already won. We need only determine if the Emperor will have mercy on your soul!’ ‘You understand nothing!’ the Fallen Angel spat back. ‘After all you’ve heard, you still don’t know why I fight, do you?’ Uzziel had stepped up close to his prisoner and the two had locked eyes, faith and faithlessness colliding with unmatched fury. ‘You fight because you are tainted by Chaos.’ Uzziel had begun. ‘You had your chance to serve the Emperor and you failed him utterly. You, and Luther, and all of your wretched cohorts chose to betray he who gave you life!’ The Fallen Angel had stood firm in the face of these accusations, and stared back at Uzziel, his every feature screaming defiance. Snarling like an animal, the traitor had lashed out at his tormentor with venomous scorn. ‘I was once like you, monk! Loyal, righteous, dutiful.’ He paused to spit, as if the words themselves were poisonous. ‘Despite my virtues, I was left behind on Caliban by Jonson while he went fighting across the galaxy.’ The renegade’s harsh voice became strained with emotions long-buried as he continued, ‘While my brothers fought battle after battle, I was left at home with the invalids, the women and the children! What did I do to deserve such a fate? I was born to go to war, but the Lion and the Emperor turned their backs on me and the others.’ His voice rose to a scream of pure hatred. ‘That’s why I’ve fought and killed my way over more worlds than you could even name. And now you think you have the right to judge me!’ The Dark Angel had said nothing at first, so shocked was he by the monstrousness of the traitor’s replies. How the Fallen twisted the truth to hide their own failure! It would be tragic, had the traitor’s hatred not driven him to a life of mindless butchery. In sadness, the interrogator-chaplain had turned away and walked towards the heavy iron door that sealed the room shut. The rusted hinges gave out a tortured shriek as he forced it open, but he paused before leaving his prisoner alone to ponder his sins. ‘Heretic.’ he intoned, ‘I had hoped for more from you. I prayed that some trace of the Lion still lurked in your soul, but I can see I was wrong. By your unrepentant actions you force me to use any method to save your soul. So let it be done.’ The door slammed shut, entombing the Fallen in the bowels of the Rock.'
I don't think they are repenting, I think even a tranhuman will say anything to stop the torture. Just like in real life, torture is not an effective way of getting truthful information, it's an effective way of getting information that the subject thinks you want to hear. They will say anything to make it stop.

I think the Interrogator Chaplains succeed where so many others fail is purity. Purity of intent. Purity of truth. I think they love their fallen brothers and see the depths to which they have fallen and will do what it takes to being them back into the light. It is one thing to hold against someone who hates, it is another thing entirely to hold against someone who truly cares for the state of your honour and very soul. Think of what depths you would go to, what forces you would fight, what unholy horrors you would go through unblinking. For someone you love.
Torture is proven ineffective for accurate intelligence, everybody will say anything just to keep the blowtorch away. So after months/years/centuries, all of us, even a Space Marine, enduring this, pleads guilty.
That's the thing. Interrogator-Chaplains are not looking for intelligence. They are not not looking for pleas of guilt. The guilt of the Fallen is already established. They will receive absolution either by repenting, or it will be taken from their flesh. Either way, it is a step towards erasing the stain on the honour of the First Legion.

So you know how Lion El Johnson has just an instinctual and inhuman even amongst his brothers level of battlefield acumen and by extension his sons? now take that ability and apply it to psychology. Makes Interrogator chaplains even more terrifying of just the thought of you saying a sentence and them instantly figuring out how to break you. Swear to the emperor man if 10 interrogator chaplains went to work with the inquisition for a week they would cut the yearly chaos incursions in the imperium in half figuratively and literally.

I agree totally. All primarchs a preternatural ability the lions most well known is strategic warfare but he also cast a shadow of fear akin to a predator who waits even amongst his brothers. None of his siblings truly understood him but ALL respected him. I think the fight with leman made built a bond stronger than most because war is really either understood

You know, the whole video I was calling bullshit - how could any of this be justified in-narrative? It's too extreme, too over the top to be anything other than a cool, grimdark affectation. There could be no meat here, no depth, but then...then you pointed out that it's not the Chaos Gods that are the worst thing in the galaxy. Or rather, they're just learning from mortals. I recently listened to the audiobook version of Lion El'Johnson: Lord of the First and I couldn't help but notice that they made it a point to push the fact that the Lion was indeed the first and the most like his father with the rest just being copies of copies. I can't help but think this will play an important role to the 1st Primarch's reintroduction.

11:04 - Master Interrogator-Chaplain Asmodai. It was Asmodai who ordered the slaughter of all the new recruits from Narcium because of their lackluster answers to his questions. Such is Asmodai's brutality and excess that even Supreme Grand Master Azrael has had to counteract and cover up his actions multiple times over the Chapter's history.
Funny cuz that was a punishment that was supposed to be 3 years, only lasted 6 months when he kept killing new recruits.
And once again, Reaffirmed that Dark Angels are my favorite chapter.

My favourite bit in the book Master of Sanctity which covers the highest ranking Chaplains in the DAs, talks about Asmodai starting ranting, then discusses someone's thoughts who is not listening to him... before concluding telling us that Asmodai's raving has come to an end. He's a very angry fellow, and it amuses me no end.
We didn't get a story but honestly, it would just be filled with screaming describing an interrogation that a dark eldar would take notes.

There were two more robed Space Marines awaiting them, their faces hidden by heavy hoods, their hands concealed beneath studded metal gauntlets. As one took a step forward, Astelan caught a glimpse of bony white under his hood. The door slammed shut behind Astelan and he turned to see Boreas had stepped inside. The Chaplain removed his skull-faced helmet and held it under his arm. His piercing eyes regarded Astelan just as coldly as the flat features of the armoured skull had done. Like Astelan, his head was also shaven and marked with faint scars. His left cheek was tattooed with a winged sword, Chapter symbol of the Dark Angels, and his forehead pierced with service studs.
‘You are charged as a traitor to the Emperor and Lion El’Jonson, and I, as an Interrogator-Chaplain of the Dark Angels Chapter, am here to administer your salvation,’ Boreas intoned. Astelan laughed harshly at the man’s overly sombre tone, the sound echoing off the bare stone walls. ‘
You shall be my saviour?’ snarled Astelan. ‘And what right do you have to judge me?’
‘Repent the sins of your past, accept the error of your Lutherite ways, and your salvation shall be swift,’ Boreas said, ignoring Astelan’s scorn.
‘And if I do not?’ asked Astelan.
‘Then your salvation shall be long and arduous,’ Boreas replied, pointedly glancing at the blades, tongs and brands on the shelf. ‘Has the glory of the Dark Angels been so forgotten that you are reduced to barbarian torturers?’ Astelan spat. ‘The Dark Angels are warriors, shining knights of battle. And yet, here you skulk in the shadows, turning upon your own.’
‘Do you not repent of your actions?’ Boreas asked again. His face was intent, and his voice was tinged with anger.
‘I have committed no wrong,’ Astelan replied. ‘I refuse to answer your charges, and I refuse to acknowledge your right to accuse me thus.’
‘Very well, then we shall endeavour to relieve you of the burden on your soul,’ Boreas stated with another glance at his torturer’s instruments. ‘If you will not repent freely and earn a swift death, then we must exorcise the sin from your soul with pain and misery. The choice is yours.’
‘There is not one here amongst you who could lighten the weight I have borne upon my shoulders,’ Astelan declared. ‘And there is not one in this room who shall lay a finger upon me without violence.’
‘That is but the latest error of judgment you have made.’ Boreas smiled grimly...'
'THE ENGINES OF the gunship roared as the Thunderhawk tore through the atmosphere. Inside, Interrogator-Chaplain Uzziel of the Dark Angels led four squads of Space Marines in the Litany of Battle. As he chanted the sacred words to prepare them for the imminent combat, Uzziel ran his fingers over his rosarius but today he did not pray in the prescribed Imperial manner. Today his fingers kept returning to the single black pearl on his string, the only pearl that really mattered. He had earned it by coaxing one of the Fallen Angels to repent and receive the Emperor’s mercy. That wretch was much on his mind as he finished the prayer, the enthusiastic voices of his twenty Marines joining him to boom the final refrain. As their voices faded, Uzziel pushed back his cowl. Filled with his faith in the Emperor, he launched into his sermon.
‘Brethren.’ he began, ‘it has been a long journey and now, at last, battle is upon us. Before we engage the enemy, I want to tell you all something. This is no ordinary mission.’ He paused to let this sink in. ‘My brothers, this is a quest, a most holy quest to bring back to the Rock… a sacred artefact, long-missed.’ Uzziel stared intently at the Marines. He saw men of varied origins, but they were all united in their blazing faith in the Emperor, in their oath as Dark Angels and in the Sacrifice of the Lion. He wished they could understand the full meaning of their mission but knew such a revelation could shake their faith. Today, he needed that faith. ‘Should we succeed.’ he continued, ‘your names and deeds will long be praised in the halls of the Rock. We will sit in the company of the Chapter’s greatest heroes. So fill your heart with the grace of the Emperor, remember the sacrifice of our blessed primarch, Lion El’Jonson, and gird yourself with the righteousness of faith!’ Uzziel leapt up, possessed by holy fury, and slammed his fist to his chest.
‘For Jonson and the Emperor! Victory or death!’
‘Victory or death!’ the Dark Angels returned his salute with barely suppressed savagery. Uzziel smiled. With such men at this back, how could he fail?..'
'IT WAS NOT so long ago that Uzziel, newly-promoted to the position of interrogator-chaplain after his inspirational leadership on the Bylini campaign, had walked the halls of the Rock, the giant space fortress that was home to the Dark Angels. He remembered the looks of envy on the faces of his comrades when he brought back his first Fallen Angel for interrogation. They couldn’t believe that one so young had succeeded where they had failed. Many had dismissed it as pure luck but Uzziel knew better. To prove it, he swore to extract the confession due from the renegade himself. It was not the first oath Uzziel had ever sworn, but it proved the most difficult to fulfil. The traitor had roundly mocked Uzziel, the Dark Angels and the Emperor. He told gleeful stories of his hundreds of campaigns as a mercenary, an endless catalogue of rape, murder and torture. Uzziel was not a man who shrank from violence, but he believed that it needed to serve a greater, righteous purpose. The wanton slaughter of the Fallen Angel’s tales had sickened him, and he had to suppress a powerful urge to rip the wretch before him limb from limb, to pay him back in kind for each of his deeds. Uzziel had fought off his immediate desire for vengeance. First, the confession. The Fallen Angel had seen the hatred in Uzziel’s eyes and laughed.
‘What’s the matter, whelp, do my stories frighten you? Can’t you stand to hear how a real Marine goes to war? You can keep your cowls and your prayer beads, monk. A true warrior goes into battle with lust in his heart, lust to spill the red blood of victory and taste the glory of war. That’s what you lack and that’s why you’ll always lose!’ Those haunting words were with Uzziel even now, echoing sickeningly inside his mind as the Thunderhawk screamed through the atmosphere. Despite the passing of time, the revulsion the chaplain felt recalling that moment was immediate and real. He relived his rage at the renegade’s insolence and his desire to make him pay for that insolence. Back there, in the interrogation cell, he had let his emotions overwhelm him for just a moment. Uzziel had backhanded the traitor, then grabbed him by the hair and slammed his head hard against the stone wall. ‘You seem to have forgotten which one of us lies in chains, filth!’ he had shouted.
‘I’ve already won. We need only determine if the Emperor will have mercy on your soul!’
‘You understand nothing!’ the Fallen Angel spat back. ‘After all you’ve heard, you still don’t know why I fight, do you?’ Uzziel had stepped up close to his prisoner and the two had locked eyes, faith and faithlessness colliding with unmatched fury.
‘You fight because you are tainted by Chaos.’ Uzziel had begun. ‘You had your chance to serve the Emperor and you failed him utterly. You, and Luther, and all of your wretched cohorts chose to betray he who gave you life!’ The Fallen Angel had stood firm in the face of these accusations, and stared back at Uzziel, his every feature screaming defiance. Snarling like an animal, the traitor had lashed out at his tormentor with venomous scorn.
‘I was once like you, monk! Loyal, righteous, dutiful.’ He paused to spit, as if the words themselves were poisonous.
‘Despite my virtues, I was left behind on Caliban by Jonson while he went fighting across the galaxy.’ The renegade’s harsh voice became strained with emotions long-buried as he continued, ‘While my brothers fought battle after battle, I was left at home with the invalids, the women and the children! What did I do to deserve such a fate? I was born to go to war, but the Lion and the Emperor turned their backs on me and the others.’ His voice rose to a scream of pure hatred. ‘That’s why I’ve fought and killed my way over more worlds than you could even name. And now you think you have the right to judge me!’ The Dark Angel had said nothing at first, so shocked was he by the monstrousness of the traitor’s replies. How the Fallen twisted the truth to hide their own failure! It would be tragic, had the traitor’s hatred not driven him to a life of mindless butchery. In sadness, the interrogator-chaplain had turned away and walked towards the heavy iron door that sealed the room shut. The rusted hinges gave out a tortured shriek as he forced it open, but he paused before leaving his prisoner alone to ponder his sins.
‘Heretic.’ he intoned, ‘I had hoped for more from you. I prayed that some trace of the Lion still lurked in your soul, but I can see I was wrong. By your unrepentant actions you force me to use any method to save your soul. So let it be done.’ The door slammed shut, entombing the Fallen in the bowels of the Rock.'
Has there been any Fallen that willingly came to the one of the Unforgiven chapters to repent? Thus, earning a swift death.

I don't think they are repenting, I think even a tranhuman will say anything to stop the torture. Just like in real life, torture is not an effective way of getting truthful information, it's an effective way of getting information that the subject thinks you want to hear. They will say anything to make it stop.

I think the Interrogator Chaplains succeed where so many others fail is purity. Purity of intent. Purity of truth. I think they love their fallen brothers and see the depths to which they have fallen and will do what it takes to being them back into the light. It is one thing to hold against someone who hates, it is another thing entirely to hold against someone who truly cares for the state of your honour and very soul. Think of what depths you would go to, what forces you would fight, what unholy horrors you would go through unblinking. For someone you love.
Time to break out the puppies and ickle mouses :-D

Torture is proven ineffective for accurate intelligence, everybody will say anything just to keep the blowtorch away. So after months/years/centuries, all of us, even a Space Marine, enduring this, pleads guilty.
That's the thing. Interrogator-Chaplains are not looking for intelligence. They are not not looking for pleas of guilt. The guilt of the Fallen is already established. They will receive absolution either by repenting, or it will be taken from their flesh. Either way, it is a step towards erasing the stain on the honour of the First Legion.
Like me some Dark Angels. Keep up the good work and don’t burn yourself out.
