  • The first time I saw the Grand Canyon, I was 16 years old. I would never have imagined that someday I’d have the opportunity (and ability) to hike down to the very bottom with a backpack full of everything needed for two nights of camping.
    My good friend, Alex, planned the trip, and we were joined by her friend, Savannah. The three of us had an unforgettable backpacking experience (it was Alex’s first!) - we hiked down South Kaibab Trail, camped at Bright Angel Campground, then hiked to camp at Havasupai Gardens, and finally hiked the rest of the way up Bright Angel Trail to reach the south rim again.
    This video is long, but features wading in the Colorado River, many lizards and frogs (including Gus), a breathtaking evening hike, some very serious yoga, and of course views upon views. Creekfoot, Croaky, and Lecko forEVER.
    Important, long overdue, and not yet enough: apnews.com/art...

    Wow! Amazing scenery. Well done Mik, one of your best. You are not only a skilled backpacker you are an awesome vlogger (if that's a word).

      Thank you! I remembered to bring my camp spoon with me this time, so making progress on being a backpacker for sure.

    Well done, ladies! Seriously. I did that exact same hike in 2014 for my first GC hike. I was 58 and did it solo. It's now ten years later and I'm only months away from my third North Rim to South Rim hike. We'll be taking 5 days to enjoy the scenery. I am 68 and I'll have other 60 year old's kids joining me. You did it right. Don't stop.

      Thank you! It was an incredible first hike there, but I’d definitely love to try north to south someday too. Have fun on your trip!

    Very nice video Mikhaila! You 3 made the hikes look easy, and I’m sure it’s difficult, especially going uphill. Thanks again! 😊

    Was this in May that you did the trek? I'm planning on next July, hoping to get a campsite.
    Did the trail running shoes work well? Three years ago I hiked down just 3 miles and back. I thought some thick cushioned running shoes would be enough. But I know I will need some more support for the full hike down and back. Considering the trail running shoes.

      Yes, we did this in early May. It was before the North Rim was open, so I think it was a little easier to get a campsite reservation, but still had to rely on luck in the lottery. I thought the trail running shoes worked great. The trail is pretty well maintained and not too rocky.

    Thanks for sharing! I love the canyon so much! I've been trying for 5 years to get a permit. I have one for thanksgiving day! My son and I are going to have my wife drop us off and the north Kiabab trail head as long as the road inst closed yet! This will be our first rim to rim! Do you remember what number campsite you were at? It looked cozy. Thanks again for sharing!

      I'm sure you and your son will have such a good time! We weren't able to start from the North Rim because it was still closed when we were there in Early May, but going down South Kaibob and up Bright Angel was a great alternative. Unfortunately, I can't remember the campsite names, but there were a lot of good ones

    I learned a few things from this one...first, I had no idea there were developed campsites at the bottom. I figured it was all backcountry primitive. 2nd, I was also surprised at the trees and vegetation at the bottom.
    What were the temps day/night and was it much different at the rim?
    Y'all had me worried wading in the river with it running that fast.

    • @mikhailalynn
      @mikhailalynn  ปีที่แล้ว

      I was surprised by all of that also! The temperatures varied quite a bit, and was hard to prepare for - we packed a bunch of layers. At the rim it was high of ~60F and low of ~30F the first day, but definitely warmer by the time we reached the top on our last day. At the bottom it was high of ~80F and low of ~50F, but it felt colder than that at night.

    I did a 16 day float trip thru the Grand Canyon in 2020 and that river is some of the coldest water I've ever been in!! Looks like a great trip, thank you for sharing!!

    • @mikhailalynn
      @mikhailalynn  ปีที่แล้ว

      That must have been an amazing experience! I was shocked how fast the river was moving where we were. Thank you for watching :)

      Water temperature that once ranged from near freezing to 80 degrees F (27 C) now runs year-round within a few degrees of 46 F (8 C), because water for power generation is drawn from well below the surface of Lake Powell. That is why older people should not raft this river. If you go over most likely cardiac arrest and not drowning will kill you. The cold shock is real.

    What is the name of the tent you used? And what shoes did each one wear?

    • @mikhailalynn
      @mikhailalynn  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The tent in this video was the Trail Hut 2 tent via REI. I like it - very easy setup and perfect size for me, plus I love looking at sky through screen top without rain cover when weather is good. It is a little heavy/big for me for backpacking.
      My shoes were Mizuno trail runners. My friends had Merrell hiking shoes.

    Found your channel yesterday while researching Smoky Mountains, and I think you seem like a cool person. I was impressed that you made the trip to Big Bend considering most people in Texas won’t even do it. If you haven’t been to the Pacific Northwest, I highly recommend that you check out Mt Rainier, Olympic National Park, and Crater Lake from July - September so there’s not much snow. They are some of my favorite parks. Have fun on your next adventure!

      Thank you for watching the videos! I visited Mt Rainier and Olympic National Park back in high school and loved both of them. Crater Lake (and the rest of Oregon) is on my short list for places to visit in the (hopefully) near future, but nothing set in stone yet. I hope you have a great time in the Smoky Mountains!

    Looks amazing. Never been, only flew over it a couple times. Never realized how much green, water and life was down there. That had to be a tough hike at times.

    • @mikhailalynn

      I had been there once before, but it was in March, so all of the green surprised me as well! It was so cool to see all of the variety within the canyon.
