solo hiking the Skye Trail | i had to quit halfway through
As soon as I completed the Tour du Mont Blanc last year, I knew I had to start planning another long distance backpacking trip. The Skye Trail, which is located on the Isle of Skye in Scotland, seemed to be the perfect next solo adventure.
There were many challenges during the first few days of my hike, including one of the wildest windstorms (certainly the wildest I'd experienced from inside my tent), but the epic landscapes, kind strangers, and adorable baby lambs easily made up for it.
While celebrating reaching the halfway point in Portree, I developed food poisoning and ultimately decided not to continue the remainder of the hike. I was devastated, especially because this is considered the most inspiring portion of the trek.
Thank you for watching! I'm sorry I wasn't able to capture the full 80 miles of trail to share, but I hope to return someday to complete the route. There may yet be a part 2.

solo travels in Edinburgh | preparing to hike the Skye Trail

In May, I traveled to Scotland for the first time. My primary motivation was my plan to hike the Skye Trail, an unmarked, 80-mile trail on the Isle of Skye. Before beginning my hike, I stayed in Edinburgh for a few days, which I spent exploring the beautiful city! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🤍🏙️
my modular Honda CRV car camper setup | how to build as an amateur

I’ve been sleeping in my Honda CRV on road trips for the past few years, but my setup has historically been quite uncomfortable. The units are modular to allow for ultimate flexibility in how I’m able to use my CRV. Hopefully this video provides helpful insight or ideas to appl...

half marathon race weekend vlog | Pittsburgh 2024

After months of training, I ran the Pittsburgh half marathon! It was exciting to get to run this course for a second time (previously completed in 2018) because this time around, I felt so much more prepared. I was able to maintain a good pace throughout the race and crossed the finish line in under 2 hours, meeting my personal goal! I couldn't have asked for a better race day, and it was such ...

This is my third and final half marathon training video! I'm so proud of all the work I put into training for this race, and I'm very appreciative of all the support from those of you who've followed along. The Pittsburgh half marathon will be over in less than one week, which is just crazy! See you again after the 13.1 miles! 🏃🏼‍♀️🤍
sometimes you dip when birding
มุมมอง 2542 หลายเดือนก่อน
In the birding community, to "dip" means to not find the bird you were looking for and hoping to see (as I recently learned on our Sax-Zim Bog birding trip). Austin and I went birding on Easter morning. We didn't see the brown thrasher or the blue-headed vireo that we were hoping to find, but we did find plenty of other birds, including fox sparrows, horned grebes, bufflehead, and even a loon. ...

But damn, what a bummer you had to stop your trip so early… I’m sure you’ll be back one day, so you can see the Northern part of the trail. Better to do it later in one stretch and enjoy it fully than see some parts of it now while being sick. You’ll be stunned, I’m sure ❤️. Hello, ..... Isle Royale on my short list to visit. Beautiful scenery! Couple questions for you .... I noticed you use a folding pad over inflating. Do you prefer the folding style? I also noticed you don't push or use apps for navigation. Are there any apps you recommend, or do you just use maps? ..... Lol! Liked your kayak partner :))

    • @mikhailalynn
      @mikhailalynn 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      On my first few backpacking trips, I used the folding mat. I do think it’s very convenient. It also doubles as a great seat when taking a quick break from hiking. More recently, I’ve been using a blow up pad for additional comfort when sleeping (Therm a Rest NeoAir XLITE). For Isle Royal, I found the trails were clearly marked, so I was able to use an offline map via Google maps app. For the TMB and Skye Trail, I used the Gaia app, which was amazing. They just increased their yearly subscription prices, so I have to figure out if I want to continue to use that versus something else.

      @mikhailalynn Thanks! Purchasing supplies and gear is half the battle! I'm trying AllTrails, Gaia, OnX. I haven't taken any major hikes yet (working on it :)) .... bur so far, I think AllTrails is pretty user-friendly. To be fair, I haven't fully dived into the others. I probably need to educate myself further. Thanks for the information on the pads! :))

      Thank you! I don’t have a great forum for questions other than the comments section or via instagram @mikhailalynn, but happy to help as I can. I used hiking guidebooks (like Cicerone) to plan out how far I would go each day and where I would stay, and I booked airbnbs for the night before my hike and the midway point a few months in advance (they fill up early on the Isle of Skye). Isle Royale is amazing! They have many designated campsites across the island, so you can pick and choose a route based on number of miles you want to hike each day.

    Great video. In less than a year I'm backpacking Hadrians Wall so I have a TON of questions about how you got your pack there? Check it (if so how did you protect the contents)? Carry on? What you could but more importantly what you COULDN'T take.? Can't wait to see the Skye.

    • @mikhailalynn
      @mikhailalynn 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That will be such a neat hike! Last year, for the TMB, I checked my pack and almost everything in it, and then it got delayed. More convenient in some ways, but depending on the delay that could totally mess up your trip. When I checked it, I actually packed my backpack and its contents all in a large, sturdy suitcase (my pack itself was empty and flat within the suitcase). This year, I brought my pack and as much of my gear as possible as a carry on. Things I checked due to restrictions include my trekking poles and my MSR pocket rocket camp stove (my airline specifically had "camp stove" on their "must be stored in checked luggage" list). I also put my tent stakes and pocket knife in my checked bag. You have to buy camp fuel after you arrive because you can't bring that on the plane at all. I think those are the big ones to consider!

    I like the IDEA of car camping... the reality... not so much. I've watched far too many van life videos of people getting 'the knock.' My feeling is that as this trend has grown in popularity over the years (Covid origins?) local towns have clamped down on their overnight parking ordinances. The prevalence of 'stealth camping' videos is kind of depressing. The idea that someone with a gun is going to wake you in your sleep if you're found out. I hope some positive soul can provide valid counterpoints to my negative observations. Have a blessed day.

    Congrats on the sub 2. The drizzle helped a little with the heat. I did the back half and the heat started to get to me after a while. Also by pacing it’s easy to tell the Birmingham Bridge. Everyone hates that bridge. Great to see your parents very supportive

      The drizzle definitely helped! Haha the Birmingham Bridge is brutal it broke me this year and back when I ran it in 2018. Congrats on running the back half! I’ve wondered what that part is like in comparison

    Well done, ladies! Seriously. I did that exact same hike in 2014 for my first GC hike. I was 58 and did it solo. It's now ten years later and I'm only months away from my third North Rim to South Rim hike. We'll be taking 5 days to enjoy the scenery. I am 68 and I'll have other 60 year old's kids joining me. You did it right. Don't stop.

      Thank you! It was an incredible first hike there, but I’d definitely love to try north to south someday too. Have fun on your trip!

    Garlic you start in the fall as they need about 9 months to grow. Brussel sprouts do best planted early spring as they are a cold hardy plant. Use the grass clippings as mulch around your plants so the weeds don't pop up. Don't use hay unless you know it hasn't been sprayed with herbicides.

      Thank you for all of the tips! I think we followed that timing for the brussels but definitely did not plant the garlic last fall… Hadn’t heard about the grass clippings strategy!

    Great run and great time! I've been a "hobby" runner over 30 years but never did more than a 10K and never faster than a 9 and 1/2 minute mile. It's tough to get past a certain point and you did it in fine style.

      Thank you! I’m planning to back off on the intensity for a while now to just continue enjoying my runs and make it a long-time habit. 30 years is amazing!

    I’ve always wanted to stay at Mt. LeConte. I may just do it solo and reserve a time and block it off.

    Congrats on the Wrangler. Such a great vehicle. I bought mine back in 2020 (for the 2021 model year) and chose the manual as well. Love it! May I ask why you didn’t do a factory order for the Ohio factory? That’s what I did and it did. Got everything I wanted, and nothing I didn’t. They even delivered it to me in Pittsburgh. ❤

      Awesome!! Always good to find another fan of manual transmission! I did a factory order, and it was still made at the plant up in Toledo, OH, but I found a better deal with the dealership in VA.
