    Best demo of the Yamaha Reface CP! Nothing but great playing!
    Imagine my disappointment when I get this instrument and realize I can't play anything in this video

    Yamaha really hit it out of the park with these Reface 'boards. The CP was the first one I got, and I ended up getting the DX and CS too. With a half damping pedal, the CP is fantastic, on it's own or hooked up to full sized keys. the DX is cool in that it allows feedback on all operators so you can get some truly complex FM considering only 4 operator generation. I think better than the DX100 which I used to have back in the day, plus the screen makes editing much easier.. The CS is seriously underrated. Sure it can't do too much in LFO modulation and it isn't velocity sensitive but most early poly synths weren't velocity sensitive either. Very flexible oscillator with it's own dedicated mod section based on the oscillator types and an 18db filter that's got it's own character. The keys feel great on all of them considering they're mini sized. I don't have use for another organ with drawbars, but a buddy has that one and it's also flexible sounding. And they gave all of them a very decent effect section. They are a bit on the high price for what they are and they all have minor drawbacks.... except for the DX you need to use an app to store sounds, DX and CS are only 8 voiced and the looper on the DX is a bit tricky and even tougher to use on the CS. And the Keys, even though the keyboard feels top notch, they are mini so it takes a bit of adjustment. Anything else really starts to feel like a minor quibble. Well done Yamaha!
    Oh, BTW, this is some serious nice playing considering the mini-keys. Just goes to show it can be played, and played well, but I'm with you, I would have to hook up full sized keys live.

    Imo the best and little known part of this piano is that it can be used as a sound module! It has MIDI and this includes Midi IN! Basically, you can plug an 88 key fully weighted keyboard to it and it will produce sounds! I'm planning to do this with my Kawai CA78 to get these groovy amazing sounds!

      Get some basic music theory under your belt, get comfortable with the major/minor triads and seventh chords in all keys, and start learning stuff by ear instead of relying on other people's transcriptions... learn what you love! Some basic technique exercises like Hanon... for the funkier styles, check out some drumming paradiddle exercises, will help with the left/right hand coordination

    the DX may have 32 presets and this only 7, but quality over quantity, there's 3-4 sounds on here that are better than anything on the DX. Yes I'm aware you can make sounds on the DX, but they are gonna always have that electronic vibe which is useful some of the time but not all the time. the wurli and two Rhodes on here can be used in ANY kind of music, pretty much. If you are a pianist/keyboardist who wants to practice, play in bands, etc, this instrument is far better for that imo.

      Sylvestre Rawminey if you have a regular midi keyboard with 66 keys you can use this as the primary device, kinda like a pedal for a guitar.

      Thanks, don't think that's anything particular... Although those sixths in dorian mode always remind me of Santana's intro on "The Healer" by John Lee Hooker... effect drenched dorian mode also easily brings "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" to mind!

      I have a reface. Can confirm that this is true. It comes with an acoustic piano sound. The sound is incredibly low quality though, and it's most likely a mistake by the team at Yamaha. And one they don't even want to address.

      @@wertj3977 I disagree that it's "incredibly low quality". No idea where you get that from. It is a perfectly decent grand piano sound.

    Wow! You are amazing! I am looking to purchase one of these for portable practicing and composing but I had a major concern which you seem to have no problem with. I see you play standard sized keyboards too with full sized keys, do you find it really difficult to switch between full piano sized keys and the mini keys of the reface CP? This is my biggest concern since I looked at the reface quickly in a store and the keys are super small! But you seem to be playing astoundingly well and accurately on them.

    • @johandalgaard

      Jade W. Thanks for the kind words! I find it surprisingly easy to adapt to the small keyboard, though I’m still a little hesitant to play it live... the keyboard is definitely the secret weapon of this thing. Compared to any other keyboard this size, the quality and playability is beyond compare, Yamaha apparently decided to make the unit a little more expensive than it could have been by cutting no corners on the keybed and responsiveness of the keys. Great call if you ask me, there’s a real quality feeling to this thing

      you can always buy a larger keyboard and plug in in thru the midi keyboard port in the back

    • @braclo93
      @braclo93 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not a keyboardist by any means. My main instrument is guitar. But I got one of these for home practice, and the key bed is amazingly responsive and not terribly difficult to use despite its size. I am also still very impressed how rock solid the construction of this keyboard is. I don't worry about the durability of it at all. By its size you'd assume that it is a toy, but the feel and sounds are definitely way better quality than a toy.

    I have always dreamed of playing a Rhodes, thing is I don't even know how to play an instrument. I know this is a mini keyboard but you think i could start learning how to play with a yamaha reface cp?

    • @OttosTheName
      @OttosTheName 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah definitely, good thing about a Rhodes is even simple things sound lovely, especially if you add some reverb.
      (If you have wider fingers you might prefer something like the Roland GO:Piano, 5 octaves, full size keys, also has Rhodes, Wurly and Clavi sounds. No built in FX except for Reverb)
      There are some great tutors on TH-cam like Michael New, Bill Hilton (Jazz), I can't think of any others right now, but feel free to hit me up if you want to know more channels that teach in an easy to follow way and make it easy to actually dive in straight away instead of starting you off learning only the boring stuff :P

      The great thing about this is that you could buy a cheap MIDI controller to have the key real estate but the CP as the sound engine. Best of both worlds for a fraction of what you'd pay for a Rhodes.

      Absolutely not. Buy a keyboard with normal sized keys and most importantly WEIGHTED. I have the reface but it's just as a small portable keyboard for when I travel, you must learn on a proper keyboard first.
