    Hopefully that clears up the Japanese Maple seed picking question. If so, let me know down below. If not, comment below and I'll do my best to answer your questions. Here are a list of the videos I mentioned and a link to my website:

    Chalked full of great information again, Mike. Hardwood cutting in late winter, softwood cutting late spring, seed propagation early to late fall. Binge watch Kincaid videos all winter, and repeat. I can dig it.

    Thank you for the tips! I have about 50 Japanese maples growing now, all because of watching your videos! I actually had more but the chipmunks got into it! I picked some seeds from a Crimson Queen last September, and it was to early, still a few germinated! All my other ones are from my own beautiful Japanese Maple in my yard!

    I know this video is about Japanese maple but I just wanted to say thank you. I've been watching your videos for a while now and you've inspired me to try to propagate my fig. I just took cuttings and they're inside (it's too hot outside and they'd either bake or dry out) in a domed, clear drink cup with a well draining soil. Thank you so much for your inspiring and informative videos!

    I have been propagating Japanese maples periodically for decades. Usually end up selling them at plant sales for the local arboretums. I collect seeds in the fall, plant them in a pot left outside for the winter. They sprout the following spring. But where my method diverges from yours, where I will take the sprouted seedlings and plant them in small individual pots instead of waiting until the following early spring. I do get some losses, that I just replace (more than enough seedlings). Have done the same with Stewartia (you should get stewartia, would go well with all your Rhododendrons). Now this year the Arboretum got a new rare tree called the Korean sweetheart tree. It already produced seed that I harvested in September and planted. It is no November, and I think some of those seeds are already sprouting which is maybe a problem. Perhaps try putting them in the garage for winter.
    Anyway, thanks for all the good info and garden tours.

    Mike, I collected seeds from a Japanese maple tree (with permission) at my doctor's office, a couple years ago in October. The seeds started germinating in my refrigerator (just like you showed, in an earlier video). I was terribly busy at the time, and I never got them planted. I plan to try again this fall when the seeds are ripe. Thank you, for all of the wonderful videos, I've learned a lot by watching you! ~Margie🌿💕🌞

    Have you ever tried growing rhododendrons or hydrangeas from seeds?? I wasn't able to find all the varieties I wanted to propagate and you have me so addicted now. I've read online that it could be easy and others say how hard it is. So, I'm going to someone I trust....you. being July in zone 6b I know at least the hydrangeas will need to come inside if we have a cold winter. I do have a greenhouse also.
    Thank you so much. Love watching you and hearing about your family. How's homeschooling going. Keep up the great work.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anything new can be a challenge I. The beginning but with time and practice it all becomes easy. I’ve never tried to grow rhododendrons or hydrangea from seed. One of the aspects of propagation I like most is that you can get an identical clone of the parent plant. With seeds, there is variability. Homeschooling went very well for 2.5 years. We’ve decided to put the kids back in the private school they were going to next year. We all talked about it and the both loved homeschooling but missed there friends so a big part of it was there decision.

  • @Freshbott2
    @Freshbott2 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for these videos! Do you happen to know if Japanese maples can be grated to Acer Rubrum or Freemanii (I think it’s a cultivar of Rubrum but not sure)? The only thing I’ve found online about mixing and matching is that grafting a palmatum to a boxelder if it works will probably produce a highly suckering stock that depletes the Japanese head cause of the head’s stricter regime for dormancy and storing sugars etc. Maples are unbelievably hard to come by where I live and can’t be imported. Because of the warm weather most of my seeds and cuttings have failed. The only ones that seed and actually sprout naturally are the boxelders which are next to being a weed.

  • @alandrury9955
    @alandrury9955 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Here's a generic question maybe for a later time. Given a plant or tree you don't know loads about, are there any ways to assess it and decide what might be the best propogating approach? For example, would softwood, semi-hard or hardwood cuttings technique be best to try here. I often just "have a go" and occasionally it works, but if it fails I wasted a season. Is there a better way?

  • @MarkSun1962
    @MarkSun1962 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Around to 10-10:30 minute mark you are talking the blood maple you grafted on a more generic rootstock and before that how think some are doi g do well because the roost may have grown through the pot into the ground.
    Seems like they age good options to turn into Bonsai.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, they would make great bonsai and I've thought about doing that with some of them.

    For those of us in Washington, where you cant get Hormodin 3 (or other commercial grade agronomy products) shipped to you check out a local Agronomy Center (Skagit farmers supply for example) where they typically stock commercial grade products which they will sell to retail clients as well.

      @@MikeKincaid79 It is now on a list of agro. products that can't be shipped without special permit. Price at Skagit Farmers Supply Agronomy Center was about the same as online, and they had pallets of it.

    You just answered my question after watching several videos. Today May 1st I found four 6 to 8 inch seedlings growing under the JM trees at my church. I also cut some small shoots off the base of the tree and going to try and root them. I've never done this before with any plants. I went to Lowes today and was amazed at the prices of the JM trees . A 3ft tree was 120.00. Are these trees so expensive because of demand and the latest craze? Or because they take so long to grow?

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  ปีที่แล้ว

      They've always been a more expensive plant. They take a long time to grow and they are a beautiful and desireable tree to grow. I don't think there's any more of a craze now as any other time. About 10 years ago, I paid around $100 for my Bloodgood Japanese maples and that was on sale at the time. They wanted $150 normally.

    You just answered several of my questions. I have a lovely Japanese maple that I forgot the variety of. When I purchased it, it stood at 11" it is now about 20' and it was grafted. I would love to take a couple of these with me when I moved because it is so unusual as the leaves are green and white and the white makes it look lacy rather than a laceleaf variety. Plus free trees are always great! I do have questions though, can I graft it onto a regular maple? If not why?
