I missed the spring window for taking cuttings and was mad at myself……. It is now July 13th and I will be taking several maple cuttings tomorrow morning: Arakawa , Kiyohime, Deshojo, Shishigashira and regular green Acer Palmatum. At least 10 of each kind…….. Maples are my favorite!! I plan to use a mixture of roughly 1/2 perlite, 1/4 akadama fines and 1/4 coco coir in a big plastic tub with a lid. I will be happy if I get even 1 viable cutting of each type!! Thank you for sharing ur experience with taking summer cuttings, Jelle!!
Propagating is one of my favorite challenges of the hobby. Seeds, cuttings, air layers. Thanks for your videos on all things relating to propagation. Thanks, keep growing
Your percentages and results are what I have experienced. Found that I had to wait a few years before they became viable pre-bonsai. Going to make a forest/grouping out of them this year. Maybe even a Penjing design. OH the potentials of cuttings. Keep them coming my friend.
:) Yeah, for trident, I prefer seeds to be honest. BUUT.. If you have a nice variety, cuttings is also a good thing to master. As you say, cuttings can take a but of time to really start going!
I counted a little the number of cuttings and nodes. As I see in your experiment you had about 9 cuttings with 1 or 2 nodes and about 7 or so with 3 or 4. And that more than 50% of the cuttings were rooted with 1 or 2 nodes and so far one of the ones with 3 or more. It's quite an interesting result for me. Thanks for sharing it!
I feel jealous that you had access to an arakawa maple! Great result because they are all free and they will all be desirable trees as they progress. Cheers for this, Xav
@@GrowingBonsai I can see that coming. Perhaps you may feel so sorry for me that when you next come to the uk a few arakawa cuttings may be hiding in your socks :)
@@GrowingBonsai not for my likings at least! Most of us like to take cuttings to, and it is fun to see the results and not only the proces of taking the cuttings. And your 1,2 and 3 node cutting test makes it even more interesting!
Yes thank you for a well instructed and video presentation. I always wonder whether the rooting hormone doesn’t get pushed off when you insert the cutting into the substrate. Would it be better to use a skewer or chopstick to make a hole first and then insert the cutting and firm up the soil after.
Nice video on cuttings - I take most of my cuttings in winter as hard wood cuttings, have great success with them in spring, my success with summer cuttings is very poor due to my climate- gets way to hot the cuttings just can’t handle it! P.S. never to many propagation videos, it one of the top questions I get.
Ohw, that is great news! If you take a look at the video Xavier and I did on rooting trident maple cuttings (th-cam.com/video/RlQCkFsukBA/w-d-xo.html) he challenged me for hardwood cuttings. I am not really great with winter cuttings. Maybe you can do a video on how you do them too?
@@naturgeist I do not remember but I think it was 15 years or so what he told me. Once these start growing, they grow. The branches I clipped off, were all that years growth!
Yes you do! Buuut.. I SAID I would put them in the shed. Then forgot and they have been out in the current cold wave. I guess in spring I will know how big of an issue -10 every night for several nights in a row is for them :)
Thanks for this Jelle. Very informative. I'm using powdered rooting hormone but do you know for how many years that stays viable before it's useless? I will try and find myself some jelly rooting compound for the Spring. 👍👍
I don't I am afraid. Does it have a sell by date? I have powdered hormone too, which I have been using for a long time, untill I rand into the jelly. The jelly turns very runny after 1-2 years which is when I replace it.
Seems we skipped Autumn and Denim in this video… anyway taking Japanese maples cutting is a nice sport: I’m looking forward to it in early spring… also considering some air layers to improve the shape/taper of my little ones… hoping they survived the -6 we had for the last week…
Just for the cold period they should be fine. I however forgot to bring them in 🤣😢so in spring I will know how hardy these recently rooted cuttings really are!
Those are gorgeous cuttings, Jelle. Great they‘ve made it. Mine look good as well. I guess the best time to sort them out for me will be in spring? As I‘ve put all of them together in one pot. 🤔 Maybe just keep them growing in a clump style. 😊 By the way: How about singing?
Yeah, regular repotting period for maples is best. I do some things out of season to show how things are done, not per se while it is the best time of year (So that viewers have the info when the season is right). I need to be more explicit about that I suppose.
@@GrowingBonsai You‘ve mentioned in the video that it’s not the best time for repotting. Nevertheless I chose not to start my comment by asking about the singing.
@@GrowingBonsai Great you’ve asked 😅 Xavier mentioned you might maybe singing in your common video. I assume you have got a great singing voice and waited for a christmas song, maybe in your native language…?☺️
Hey Jelle! Thanks for the video. Can you give us some infor on your secret weapon. The bags? are you using 4" pots? can to give us a link to them on amazon perhaps?
Hi Jelle, great video once again. Do you have experience with Arakawa cuttings? My bonsai teacher said Arakwas are quite weak trees (e.g. don’t respond well to full defoliation, frost, etc.) but especially so when on their own roots rather than being grafted. Something to consider!
Yes I do! I have been taking them for a bit now, and my mature arakawas are on their own roots too. I suppose I would say.. Take a look at the video that comes out later this week, on winter protection of bonsai. Somewhere I have some info on arakawa :)

It was a bit of a surprise to me too to be honest. I always thought 2-3 nodes was best. It seems that just 1 ode did really well too.
