This song was written as during the Falkland War by Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits and released in 1985. It portrays a soldier as he lay dying on the battlefield, speaking to his brothers in arms that surround him. Home Free through their incredible harmonies and the videography have created a masterpiece.

Home Free got this score from a group called Club for Five. They changed it a bit but not too much. And yes the original was Dire Straits

Brother even though another country, I still thank you for your service !! This song is a cover of a Dire Straits song and was released in 1985. It's a tribute to the UK war dead from the Falklands War of 1982. Hauntingly etherial and majestic in its sound by Home Free, I think they caputre all the feelings of the original. If you noticed the guys seemed to have a ghostly appearance with tranparancy. It was a dying soldier & his "brothers in arms" that had passed before him.

@@ThatguyPurps yep it's the culturally realted countries, Australia, New Zealand, Canada & the motherland of us all, the UK. We traditionally all have ties cultually, language of course & usually see eye-to-eye politically as well. What Home Free did here is incredible given they had to replace the guitar & yet still give that same depth of emotion the original brought to us....I encourage you to react to the original sometime, it's amazing too

As a band accused of being “a country band” it’s so much fun watching someone discovering the many sides of Home Free, and their ability to make a song sound, no matter how well known, as if it’s brand new yet keep all the flavor of the original. (Kind of like after eating fried eggs all your life and someone comes along and gives you salt and pepper for the first time.)

As Kevin mentioned this was a Dire Straights song. The arrangement was done by a Finnish group, Club for 5. Tim asked for the arrangement from them and he tweaked it a little bit.
    Great reaction!

Ethereal. Haunting. Gut wrenching. Soul stirring. Angelic. The only thing missing was the seraphic choir backing them up.
Excuse me while I track down my soul and stuff it back into my body...

At this point I've watched this video well over 100 times with reactors and I still get the chills from the lyrics and harmonies. Tim and Chance keeping that kind of breathy, vulnerable, yet powerful tone throughout. Adam, Rob and Austin holding down the backing vocals, interweaving those harmonies that support the message that is being told. You were right in your assessment about who and what this song was about from Home Free's standpoint. The video was released just before Veterans Day here in the USA, but it's also a call for unity and inclusiveness for everyone in a time where so many issues try to divide us. Thank you for your service and for contributing to the conversation that Home Free is promoting.

While it is a cover.... it is NOT Dire Straits they covered. This five part harmony arrangement was done by Club For Five, a Finnish A Capella group. They gave HF HIGH PRAISE for this, and Tuukka the grand master bass from Club For Five is one of Tim's inspirations and mentors.

I don't know if anyone else noticed it, but I have done a lot of singing with choruses. Much of what I did was accompanied by pipe organs. Those last two notes as you look at the flag waving in the breeze sound exactly like a pipe organ. I know they are voices, but it still sounds like an organ to me. Remarkable....and never fails to deliver a chill down my spine.

Grandma's church did a lot of the old hymns.
The last part was always that two part Amen.
That is what hit me.... It ended like a prayer hymnal.

Wonderful reaction! Thank you so much!
    POWERFUL!
    PERFECT HARMONIES!
    PHENOMENAL PERFORMANCE!
    BRILLIANT ARRANGEMENT!
Extremely emotional, the first time I heard this it completely broke me! I felt eviscerated, breathless, and wept like a child! It took quite a while for me to recover.
To have left me feeling so unsettled and raw it also had an aura of " Holiness" as if the guy's were standing in the presence of Angels on Holy Ground! Reverent! Sacred! I still tear up everytime I see and hear this video, it seems to have a way of drawing me in. I love everything about it and I love Home Free so so much! I've never had a group of singers that affect me and truly move me in so many different ways, directions and emotions depending on the songs and sounds as these amazing gentlemen! Home Free has changed my life for the better and I am very grateful to them! I feel very fortunate and blessed! ♥️😭🤯♥️🍟

This was a great reaction! I loved the points you made. I adore the way the guys did this. It's so powerful and haunting. The echo makes you feel as though you can feel the souls slipping away, and Tim's bass makes you actually feel the true power and meaning of the song. If you haven't, read the comment HF left in their description of their video. You should also check out the original by Dire Straits. Mark Knopfler's guitar throughout is amazing. I love both arrangements. Both are absolutely gorgeous.

Thank you, Brother. I did 8 years in the US Navy, and my daughter and her husband are currently serving in the US Navy. There are certain songs that HF does that ALWAYS bring tears to my eyes: This one, Travelin' Soldier, and One Voice are but a few.
A lot of Vietnam vets fly the POW/MIA flag, too. I think many vets, in general, fly that flag.
Interesting take on the voices crying out. It definitely gives it a different feel.

I agree Purps, it’s hauntingly beautiful. Loved Tim’s low notes. Loved the echoes. Loved the black and white film. Tim and Chance looked ghost like in the windows. It’s a cover of the Dire Straits song in the 80’s. That’s guitar driven where this is voice driven. I love it. Good reaction and bless you for your service.

Welcome Home... and thank you!! ❤️
I was part of the Vietnam era. To me, it didn't matter if you believed in the war or not. The vets should never have been the punching bags for it on their return home!! That was not one of our finest hours as far as our treatment of our vets. I had a friend who served in Nam and told me what is like being there, and after he got home. I feel our vets (and families) should 'always be honored'. Your service is/was very much appreciated by me and my family.

Honestly.. I had done the intro like 3 times as each had some form of technical issue. I did mention that we have Remembrance day on Nov 11 and asked if others have a similar military rememberance. It must have been in the first or second attempt though if you didnt hear me say it.

  • @arnieadam
    @arnieadam 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Since you seem to prefer the musically analytical approach, breaking frequently to point out the minutia of technique rather than listening for longer stretches to get the emotion and meaning, perhaps you would have benefited from a wee bit of research ahead of time so you knew this was a Dire Straits song from 1985 written during the Falkland War about the futility of war.
