      Yeah, such a major topic to choose obsidian above the others...I'm just starting with it, but already leraned from somenone's comment at Obsidians' Discord, is to be carefull with plugins...you do not want to throw away that future proof capacity, using too much of customizations... ;)

      @@linkingyourthinking I would agree….I think the reason is because it is a combination of not just what Obsidian is and how to use it…..it also gives you the practical reality of why yiu should use it and great common sense explanations with the topic used as an example…..gives the listener something to use to perhaps apply to their topics and apply the concepts he explained. Also above everything it is the compassion of the presenter who believe s deeply in what he is teaching and is truly committed in helping his listeners…..and also welcomes people to write for further clarification,…..that is what makes this man so good….

    This is a terrific series for getting started! As Nick mentions, writing in Markdown text is fast and gives you portable plain-text documents, but it's also important for beginners to know that, by switching to "Preview" mode, you get beautifully formatted text (without all the #'s and *'s) that you can cut-and-past into Word or wherever.

    • @linkingyourthinking
      @linkingyourthinking  4 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      You're absolutely right about this benefit.
      And you're presienct too! I may have already filmed an upcoming "Hotkeys" video showing exactly how to toggle Preview mode.

    • @seamasaccounts4363
      @seamasaccounts4363 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thanks for this comment because despite its portability advantages, markdown is butt ugly and distracting. We are now coding fir the machines instead of the machines doing it for us! Nick does a terrific job setting and then delivering on learning objectives

    • @roqsteady5290
      @roqsteady5290 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also I notice, you can right click and edit the current note in your default editor, which in my case is Typora, which converts markdown to wysiwyg on the fly.

    I've been using Obsidian in a rather naive fashion for quite a while, but I'm definitely ready to get into it a bit more, and make my use of it more efficient. I like these beginner tutorials even as someone who's not completely a beginner, because it helps me make sure I haven't missed something. For example, I never really used tags. I can see their value relative to the nested folder structure I have been using (allowing you to give multiple tags for a note, etc.), so I'll definitely start doing that now. Thank you!
    I still have some specific questions, but I'll go through the rest of the tutorials first to see if you're already addressing those somewhere.

    • @adinugraha789
      @adinugraha789 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Flumpfy Maybe so but making things simple is a lot harder than it looks. Usually the hardest. And thus deserved to be recognized.
      I've been needing to do serious note-taking to gather thoughts and ideas that are often lost which I often find regretful later on, sometimes years afterward. Been hearing about Obsidian. Tried to get into it. Seems too complicated. Delayed for over 1 year then found this video. It does help me get started.
      I don't care if the other commenters are bots to be honest (they just might not be). I just find these videos useful. In the times of stupid YT shorts and TickTockers, these kind of videos are valuable. And that matters to me.

I can immediately get a feel for "the power of linking my thinking." And as a friend once told me, "Organized thought is power in the mental environment." This gives me goose bumps... We must find a way to be in control in this medium OR others with more powerful minds will control us.

    Thank you Nick. Frustrated with Evernotes as I couldn't organize it the way I wanted it & Intimidated with the complicated Notion, Fortunately I stumbled upon your series on Obsidian. Your new subbie :)

    Things would have been easier if I had found this video when starting to play around in Obsidian. Very good explanation in a brief video.

      I hear that, Terry. There can be a steep learning curve at first. I'm glad these videos have helped you now though and I hope it's going well!

    I happened upon Obsidian two days ago. I saw the potential, but was finding the online info a bit overwhelming. So many options, and not a lot of explaining what does what.
    I have a clear idea of what I (initially) want to get done, and think you are giving me the clear tools for doing so. Thank you!
    Btw, I'm wondering if you are "related" to Obsidian in any way...?

    Dude interestingggg. I switched from lastpass to keepass for the same reason. Now that my current note taking app is struggling, I am looking for alternatives. May have to jump to obsidian.

    I'm an Obsidian newbee. I read that I can preserve the markdown formatting I'm seeing in ChatGPT dialogs (specifically, mathematical notation) by copying it and pasting it into Obsidian, but I'm not seeing that. I am copying onto a so-called "canvas" so maybe that's not the right approach. It looks to me like ChatGPT is using a markdown language like LaTeX, but I'm not sure what it is. Can Obsidian interpret that properly? Or do I need a fancier markdown editor to do that?

    I knew all the things explained except for those specific to Obsidian which were a few, but still I enjoyed the whole video which means to me that you are doing the job greatly! Thanks!

    Lesson learned:
    # or ## or ### (with space) = heading/ text size
    # (without space) = is to sort or just to emphasize words just like a bookmaks to sort things out
    Auto list and numbering
