Was getting confused that some of the options and layouts in 2023 don't match with what was recorded for this video. For anyone confused, I guess that Starred Notes has been replaced by Bookmarks.
"The Starred Plug-in has been replaced by the Bookmarks plugin which has many more features and is a much better experience. You will find your starred notes in the Bookmarks plugin. Always check the release notes to be up to date." Just an example.
I just came to know about a book called "building a second brain" by Tiago Forte. From there, I have started exploring note taking apps. First time while I encounter with obsidian, it was really daunting. But your videos encourage to learn this. Thank you very much.
It's great how you arrange the explanations based on Obsidian's true settings, it helps newbie like me understand better rather than having to look all over the screen trying to find the functions being explained.
Waiting for more. I tried Obsidian few months but then got into Roam Research. Now I am beginning to feel that perhaps Obsidian is enough for me. Your videos are convincing me more to move back to Obsidian. So I am going to wait for more videos from you.
As an architect type of note taker I am starting to find Obsidian in a sense of freedom. No need to actively organize yet it is exactly where I need it.
Obsidian has changed many of the defaults to what you suggest in this video! They must be watching. Even so, this is still a great tutorial for learning the basics of the settings and how to work with them.
At the part where you turned the light mode on and said "I hope that your eyes didnt burn too much" I had to burst out laughing. My eyes got instantly fried.
I love that you shared Gall's Law, and I instantly got to put that into obsidian. Thank you for the reference. It's an amazing one for the associations I have in my brain.
This playlist of Obsidian is incredible! Fantastic work, Nick. Your Obsidian playlists have gotten me to switch from Notion, and I couldn't be happier. Thank you for putting together such an informative series!
Same, Notion just seems like an overkill formatting-wise for most work I do and not too good for writing and thinking and linking. Obsidian's just perfect.
You are my soulmate of organization and thinking! I found your channel and I am a new subscriber. In love with your content and the level of depth, you bring on the subject of organizing your thinking.
I absolutely love these tutorials. I've been toying around with keeping a commonplace book for a few years now but held back because the time intensity of writing/printing manual cards was too much and I never knew about programs like this. You're enthusiasm and clarity is a great combination! Your intros are not just filler, they're helpful primers for mindsets before the video and as I've mentioned, your enthusiasm throughout the video really brings me along with you in getting excited about the reasons why I'd want to do this and become better at it! Great great videos. Thanks so much for making them!
Good lesson three. I was already browsing other features and had previously enabled it. However i am glad you made this one so i could check what i should keep and what i could discard. Thanks again.
Firstly, thank you for this series. I am just on the third video and I can feel the clarity this app can bring to the bungled thoughts. Secondly, not sure if you answer this later, but do tagging and linking work across vaults or are they limited by vaults? Hope you answer! thanks again!
When I opened the Obsidian settings I was like, "Omg... So many settings and options..." ._." Thanks to you, tho. Now, I know where I should go first without getting overwhelmed. And I'm also excited about what is in store when I dive deeper later. ^^
Thanks alot. Another great video. This playlist helped me get incredibly organized on obsidian and link my ideas and notes, particularly for my school work; so, many thanks.
These videos are great for a newbie like me getting started and finding their way around MD. It would be helpful to clarify a bit where some things are that you refer to, e.g., I still can't find anything called "Tag pane" and, in settings, it wasn't immediately obvious when you were in "Files and links" instead of "Editor".
Great set of tutorials, Nick. I am happy to have come across Obsidian and these videos. The tool is designed to think and write. Amazingly simple, however extremely powerful to leverage the human brain.
Hola! recien vi los 3 primeros videos y es genial la forma en que explicas! muchas gracias desde Argentina! (perdon pero mi ingles no es lo sucientemente bueno al escribir)
Your tutorials are gold for beginners. Just one though...the commands have changed with Obsidian updates and it's confusing to look for icons that are no longer present. Quick notes in the comments section would do. Thank you.

thanks for this series, it's been quite a journey in many ways ;-) If you ever do an update to this video there is loads more options to mess around with, and I personally was very annoyed with the "Editor - Readable line length" option. In the latest version of Obsidian (0.15.6) it's on by default - and it makes the text in the editor appear in the middle on large monitors, life if you in Word begin with several tabs. thank you for this comment
I agree that the focus in Obsidian is on 'writing, thinking and linking' rather than formating - not to be distracted by proprietary functions.
Happy to hear!
Its amazing. Now, whenever I speak I'm accompanied by relaxing, inspiring music that appears out of nowhere...
Haha, that sounds like an awesome experience!
This is an absolutely incredible set of tutorials! Thank you so much for putting it together!
You're very welcome!
Subtly flexing his graph... I like it!
Hahaha! So true :))
“Writing, thinking and linking. “ Thanks for boiling it down to, what I would call, a first principle.
I just discovered Obsidian and it blows my mind how impressive it is.
I just came to know about a book called "building a second brain" by Tiago Forte. From there, I have started exploring note taking apps. First time while I encounter with obsidian, it was really daunting. But your videos encourage to learn this. Thank you very much.
Currently on this journey my self. Actually found this channel after watching Tiagos video with Nick!
It's great how you arrange the explanations based on Obsidian's true settings, it helps newbie like me understand better rather than having to look all over the screen trying to find the functions being explained.
Thanks - I'm really glad to hear these tutorials have helped!
Was about ready to give up on Obsidian till I found this series. Now I think I'm hooked. Excellent content.
Thanks a lot for subscribing! Really glad you found these tutorials helpful as well!
Finally...the most perfect (right content, in right structure , in right pace) Obsidian walkthrough videos ever. Thanks a lot. Amazing work.
Oh wow, such kind words. I'm thrilled to hear; thanks for taking the time to share. More to come!
Waiting for more. I tried Obsidian few months but then got into Roam Research. Now I am beginning to feel that perhaps Obsidian is enough for me. Your videos are convincing me more to move back to Obsidian. So I am going to wait for more videos from you.

Thank you for sharing - I'm glad you're finding them useful!
Obsidian has changed many of the defaults to what you suggest in this video! They must be watching. Even so, this is still a great tutorial for learning the basics of the settings and how to work with them.
Haha, yeah it's fun to see where things have become easier for users
My eyes melted because of that unwarned flashbang...
At the part where you turned the light mode on and said "I hope that your eyes didnt burn too much" I had to burst out laughing.
My eyes got instantly fried.
LOL yeah light mode definitely isn't for everyone. Hope you enjoyed the tutorial though!
I love that you shared Gall's Law, and I instantly got to put that into obsidian. Thank you for the reference. It's an amazing one for the associations I have in my brain.
you might want to quote John Gall instead of Josh Kaufman, though...
2024 - and I think this is still the best. Others assume a certain amount of knowledge beforehand.
Notion also has a gruesome privacy policy.
Fabulous. There is so much depth to Obsidian, that this introduction is essential to get to know the package.
I can't thank you enough Nick!.
Obsidian has really been a game changer to me.
You're welome. Happy to help!

You are exceptional in your way of explaining things. Thank you for your videos.

Would you recommend Obsidian for writing a novel?
thanks for this series, it's been quite a journey in many ways ;-)
If you ever do an update to this video there is loads more options to mess around with, and I personally was very annoyed with the "Editor - Readable line length" option. Do you have an opinion on Zetelkasten?
I do. I “zettel”. And I enhance my Zettelkasten with fluid frameworks like Maps of Content and a Home note. Much more on this soon
I'm a complete newbie in Obsidian and Markdown, so I have a lot on my plate right now 😉. I can't insert an image, it always appear as Markdown, not as an image! Can someone help me out?
You're in Edit mode. To toggle to Preview mode, hit cmd-e. That's for a Mac.
On a Windows, hit control-e (I think).
Good video
