Icon Folder has been renamed Iconize and supports adding icons to files, folders, notes, etc. Annotator is pretty nice for highlighting and annotating PDFs & ePub documents.
Yeah. Me too, it's been seamless for me. Running syncthing on a tiny home server means that for whichever device I'm using, there's something else there for my current device to sync to. Changes get synced after you pause typing for 10 seconds.
I switched to Obsidian from Evernote after the insane price hike and haven't looked back! At first I was a bit lost, as I kept trying to use Obsidian like Evernote, until I slowly began to learn how to actually use Obsidian Fast forward a few months later and I am so glad I made the switch - Obsidian is everything Evernote isn't and so much more!
Don't know if youre about to mention this. With MacGPT and an OpenAI API Key, you can write a prompt directly into obsidian and also get the response directly to obsidian. Depending on your workflow, this can be amazing.
I'm not so sure on this... if your goal is to generate text sure. If your goal is to cement what you have learned by taking notes - which frames your thoughts and lets you record them then not so much?
@@cantisOne counterpoint: Getting that GPT output directly into your current screen can minimize workflow disruptions. You don't need to alt+tab between Chrome and Obsidian as much. The only real value this can add, however, is if you pare down that information and REWRITE it in your own words. Without rewriting the GPT response, you're absolutely right that it won't help to retain information.

I would not be trying to memorize any info I get from chatGPT. I would be more likely to use it for something like writing marketing copy or a product description, in which case all I need to do is edit/tweak it, then copy paste it into the relevant platform, then forget it forever, lol.
I neglected my Obsidian setup the last months. Your video inspired me, to start using it regularly again. As other comments mentioned, syncing is a crucial part of my setup because I use(d) it with multiple devices and some parts with other people as well. Think, I will set up syncthing on my server and do some syncing magic with that. Thank you for the video, Christian!
Dataview: you can also use it to bring formulas in from other files. Example: I have one file for each group of formulas I’m using. They rely on several document variables and one imported variable (the calculation). That way I just need to have the values in the frontmatter, read the variable value from the formula document and that’s it. Each time I use the new variable in the document, I get the calculated result. Also works with in-document variables, you just have to prep your formulas accordingly. So you only need to write (and modify) a formula once and keep using it on a whole lot of documents.

I love obsidian. I paid for the sync feature. As much as I don’t mind putting something together figured it was easier lol. One huge thing I use this for is taking TH-cam notes. I use TubersLab and i download the obsidian format of the notes and put it inside my vault. But I have been using Readwise too. right now I have TubersLab sync to Readwise then have that sync to obsidian and blam it’s awesome!!
My personal AI will transcribe any video link I give it, save it as a document, then use the content of that videos script for its own generative personality, all in less than a single second, automatically 🤷♀️

Dataview is what convinced me to use obsidian. It pretty much replaced my todo app and notion setup. When I create a document in obsidian I include tasks I need to preform for this document. With dataview I've created a canvas which aggregates all the tasks from thes documents which provides me a total overview of what needs to be done. No more elaborate explainations in a tasks to remind me what I was thinking about. Clicking on the tasks brings me to the relevant context.
I got a few nice tools: mindmap (to create a mind map from a note), auto note mover (can move notes to folder if it contains a tag), there also is canvas (similar to ExcaliDraw but a core plugin)
I think I found out about obsidian on your channel in the past... I had been looking for a replacement for my tech wiki stuff for ages.. I have never looked back.. Obsidian is just simply amazing and some of the addons, plugins make it incredible...

Project looks very interesting, and may allow me to use my project key words very flexibly. For example, every project item (note, document, drawing, image, model) will relate to a project activity, a work-breakdown item, a project element, a material, a location, a specification reference. I could use these as meta data and queries about particular project components would be really quick.
I can attest to that! It says this in the coloured box in the plugin description, "Obsidian Icon Folder becomes Obsidian Iconize! Read this discussion for more information. NEWEST UPDATE (15/11/23) Add icons to your notes and texts in live-preview and preview-mode!"
If syncing the Iconize icons are still a problem, a decent compromise is to just use emojis. There's enough of them that you can have a fair bit of variety and that way you aren't adding an extra dependency to your vault.
I've been using Logseq for years now. Now you've shown me how much Obsidian seems to have improved over the years and just how many plugins it has compared to logseq. Would you suggest me moving to Obsidian? I assume the files are more or less the same MD format.
depends. if you like a pure outliner with a daily note style than logseq is probably better. (but i use tana for that now). obsidian is better in probably every other way (atm anyway)
I think, you should look into ZK and ZK-NVIM as well. I'm using it when working from terminal (mostly). And sometimes I'm firing up Obsidian on top of the same notes. They booth are "compatible".
If you like Excalidraw, and you're a developer or otherwise prefer keyboard first workflows, you will LOVE Plant UML. Type your shapes and lines into the editor in a very simple syntax and the PlantUML engine draws great diagrams for you. Need to edit a diagram, edit the text and it updates automatically. Leave the mouse behind.
The organization of folders is interesting. Do you plan to make a dept video about it. Knowledge Organization is a very difficult area nowadays, at least for me. Thanks for the video.

Hello Cristian Lempa. I want to use the Obsidian application for my engineering education. Although I tried with a clipper and a chrome md text download plugin, I couldn't do exactly what I wanted. When I uploaded the mathematics codes prepared for mathematics students into the application in md format, I saw that mathematical expressions in many subjects such as fraction lines in rational expressions, rooted numbers, exponential expressions of numbers, limits, derivatives, integrals could not occur smoothly as they appear on the site. If there is a solution that I can note all the expressions on the page in the same way, please help me. By the way, there is no copyright infringement. Does dataview actually write to a MD file, as in the content it produces and shows is static content that is regenerated when the view is loaded or is it dynamic such that the file only ever contains the the sql like query?

Let’s not pretend that Obsidian is actually making our lives better people. We’re all just getting off on cool organization things and making ourselves feel like we are being more productive. Do we really need to connect all of our thoughts and ideas? Does reading more and “knowing” more and then logging it all and making it connect together actually have value and is it worth all the effort? I have yet to see any of these TH-camrs show concrete examples as to how it has made their lives or jobs actually better, and not just more unnecessarily organized and logged and “connected”. If you have an actual example of this, feel free to comment on this and let me know. I’d love to hear about it
To me this „Zettelkasten“ system never made much sense 😅 I was using obsidian mostly because I wanted to document my projects. I now switched to a different tool, but note taking and markdown obsidian is really great!
For me the system that I've created using all these "zettelkasten" atomic notes", "pkm", "lyt", etc. Concepts is great for my workflow because it forces me to follow my own guidelines when I take a new note. Whenever I wanted to reference a note from my physical notebook or even a note app such as my Samsung notes app on my phone I need to rely on my memory to remember that that note exists in the first place and to remember the contents of that note. So an example of a challenge I sometimes face is I have all my calculus notes in one journal and I don't have room in my biology journal anymore so I use my calculus journal for my note taking out of necessity. Then down the road I completely forgot that I did that and when I want access to my biology note, I forget I wrote it down in my calculus journal. That note is essentially lost forever. What obsidian is really good at is allowing you to make those mistakes in the app and still being able to find that specific block of information easily. The big difference is that all your notebooks become one big notebook with no limit. If you really needed to write down some info a pretty girl told you at school like a list of things she likes, what kind of folder would you even fit that note in or what journal is it OK to write something like that in? (Simp folder lol). With Obsidian you don't need to categorize every note just label it properly as a personal note and chuck it into your notes. It's not about making your life better it's about being able to retrieve information at a moments notice

"Noten" is used for (school) grades and music notes. These types of notes are called "Notizen" in german 😊

There's a more suitable plugin to do this, called Checklists, it aggregates checklists from all notes into one list.

Mermaid support in Obsidian is excellent and learning the mermaid syntax absolutely worth it.

You can use recent version of Pandoc to convert markdown to word. All the Obsidian files are just Markdown files in a directory

You can use the dataview plugin to export, but obsidian itself doesn't have a function like this.

(Simp folder lol). With Obsidian you don't need to categorize every note just label it properly as a personal note and chuck it into your notes. It's not about making your life better it's about being able to retrieve information at a moments notice

Das liegt daran, dass ich deutscher bin ;), aber mein Kanal wird auf Englisch bleiben. Leider fehlt mir einfach die Zeit content auf deutsch und englisch zu machen.

Unfortunately, not. Honestly, some of those plugins were giving me a hard time. :D I'm still using it for my tech docs, but for productivity I'm afraid to say I've switched to a different app :(

You need to find a way to sync your vault, all settings are stored there as well.
@@christianlempa syncing vaults is not possible because the 2nd computer is a work computer, and separate from personal work. But I want to replicate the plugins and config settings there. How?
