Hi Love the idea of creating a personal google map. But all my stuff is in MP3 recordings. Not tech savvy so this Obsidian thing sounds pretty intimidating to me, but I'm willing to take the time to learn. Question is do you know if this program could do the same with recordings or do you have any suggestions please?
"My notes are messy, unfinished, and sometimes blatantly wrong, but they're still useful for me" is such a wonderfully helpful mindset for these things. My ADHD brain is always trying to find the "perfect" system that doesn't actually exist. This "good-enough" mindset is so incredibly underappreciated. Thanks for all your work on these videos, they're great!
@@nicolevdh I'm way too much of a perfectionist and it's prevented me from even starting so many things, including notetaking! I'm sure many people are in the same boat and I think this is the best advice for us to hear :D
This one of the best comments I read in a while. Hate all of this "second brain" systems. This does not need to be a so called system. Too much people fall in this "perfection automation fast productivity" rabbit hole that is useless. I've been there. It sucks. Want to note something? Just open whatever program you have and write. I used to note in notepad and word and was far better for me. Hell, write on a phisical notebook if you want, is a nice experience. Even a piece of paper is good if I feel like it.
Nicole, you are one of the best explainers on the internet! While I know that your technical knowledge is light-years beyond mine, you always take care not to leave the less-skilled and experienced viewer behind. I really appreciate that, and I've gained much from each of your videos. Thank you!
Hi Nicole I have watched at least 40 Obsidian TH-cam teachers in English and in French. You are among the top three ! Your teaching is very clear and very well explained and organized. I know that you are a programmer. I think that a series for beginners would be a great success if done like this one and without complicating things too fast. Obsidian is very powerful and the problem is that we tend to use it too rapidly without mastering the basis. I am an old pastor and I see all the potential of this software. Keep up the good work, especially the one for beginners. You are a great teacher!
I appreciate this a lot, Marcel! Thank you for the nice words and the encouragement. I was not sure about this video, actually, because I thought I could have done way better, but your comment has really motivated me to do more. Thank you again!
Hey, I'm just starting out with Obsidian and Nicole's videos have been very helpful to me. As someone who has little programming knowledge, I really appreciate these kinds of videos. Could you recommend me the other TH-cam channels that make good videos on Obsidian for beginners? Thanks!
I’m also brand new to Obsidian and this video is very helpful. I subscribed to your channel and will be watching your other tutorials. Thank you for doing these,
Nicole, this is your first video I've watched, and I gotta say, your explanation was amazing! I like writing as a hobby, so Obsidian really helped me to organize my thoughts. The only thing that bothered me were tutorials from "productivity" channels that kept sneaking in business speech and productivity related stuff that I just found distressing. Your video not only explains stuff neatly and simply, it also takes away all that pressure added to using the program. Thanks!
I still have to download Obsidian. I'm trying to "study" it a bit, just to start well prepared. As a result I've watched some really long, detailed and technical videos, and I started feeling a bit overwhelmed and lost. But today I stumbled upon your video, and I'm so glad that happened! So clear and simple, now I feel a lot more confident, relaxed, and ready to start a new experience learning along the way! Thank you so much Nicole, you're awesome!! 💚
Just came across this video. It is a nice and easy introduction into using Obsidian. I have tried using Obsidian many times but I always get overwhelmed by seeing peoples setups. Obsidian can be very powerful and flexible, but it's easier to start simple and work your system up as you need it. This video helps to show how you can start simple but still make the app useful until you're ready to make it do more. Nice work.
This is the video i was looking for! so great and simple to start over in obsidian and forget all the fany systems. was overwhelmed by all the overengineered setups. but your approach for calendar and daily notes finally made me start to use obisidian. love it. Thanks!
The perfect video to get STARTED with Obsidian. Gives a simple insight into what the links and backlinks are, which is precisely what a beginner like me wanted. Thank you so much for this video.
I just started watching the video and had to pause to say thank you. I didn’t realize I was overwhelmed with all the new note taking methods until you calmly explained how complicated everything has become. Thank you for your clear and simple overview. Ok now on to watching the rest of the video and subscribing!
Nicole, I am a new fan of your content, your videos are easy to follow and very informative. I appreciate that you share your technical knowledge and experience in a format that caters to the somewhat-technologically challenged like me without overly explaining, great balance - simple and succinct. You have made this process enjoyable and fun. It's not scary anymore. Thank you for the hard work you do in creating each video. Great work.
as a youtuber im blown away by your content, presentation skills and personality, this is not only direct and to the point but you're really enjoyable to watch, thank you for making something so complicated so simple!
Sunday, August 07th, 2022 is my first day using Obsidian and you are my first teacher of this amazing software. Thank you very much and have a nice Sunday.
I just love your teaching style it's so calm, and warm and leaves me feeling positive as well as learning something new :) More more more more please Just learning obsidian for trying to attack a masters degree ... so all of this is super new and confusing - thanks for these tuts!
Wow. I'm so glad I came across this channel. Not only is the vibe so homey and reassuring, it comes packed with information that can be trusted and that in small bits so no one gets left behind and everything is comprehensible easily! As soon as something might seem a little overwhelming there is a cut to 1o1 explaination, awesome! Quality content if I've ever seen it. I was a bit intimidated by Obsidian but having found this channel makes me actually feel comfortable, even excited for the upcoming hours I'll spend with this program. Thanks a lot!
OMG Fynn, THANK you! What an awesome comment. That is exactly the vibe I want to project. I'm really happy to help you through your intimidation. I totally get it-- it took me a bit to "get" Obsidian. But it definitely gets better! Welcome to the Obsidian community! :)
Thank you so much for this! We're a DID system, and we're really excited to see how we can use this program to take notes on our system and keep track of all our alters, their likes and dislikes, genders, and more! Thank you so much for making this so accessible!!
I'm probably not the "target" audience for this video, since I didn't have too much trouble getting set up, but I think you did a nice job for those who are. So many of the obsidian videos are >20min long, I appreciate that you keep things fairly concise.
I've had obsidian installed for months now but haven't really used it because i simply don't know how to structure and link notes like you see everyone doing in these youtube videos. Thanks to your explanation I now know I don't need to worry about that and I should just dive in, not worrying if things aren't perfect, I'll get a feel for it as I go. Thanks for the video
I was on the brink on giving up on Obsidian even before trying. Gratefully, I cam across your video! You make it look easy and intuitive. Thanks, Nicole!!!
Thank you for not only making a great video explaining Obsidian, but also for reaffirming that you don’t have to study some strange philosophy of cognition to be successful with it! 🤣 Looking forward to checking out more of your content.
Been looking for a way to create intricate and vast mind-maps for my GMing and writing for years, tried a few but it's been a waste of time to manually make them within rigid ways how to make them. Obsidian seems like a great place to write things down and I get that mind map as a bonus! Your intro video has been the clearest so far and I'm looking forward to going through your GM playlist too.
I haven't even installed it yet (heard about like an hour ago!) and your video was so clear and UNcomplicated that you made the completely abstract seem so easy to grasp! so thanks, and I'll certainly refer to yout playlist
Heard about Obsidian through another video. Decided to check it out. But found myself confused over the use of it. Thank you so much for this video. You were clear and simple in examples and it made perfect sense in how to use this application.
I just downloaded Obsidian and I have to say, this is by far the best explanation for a beginner I have come across. Really, really helpful in getting me started. Thank you, Nicole!
Thank you, I needed to see you use the Links and Back Links and your thought process behind it. That made a whole bunch of stuff fall into place. Thanks again, Nicole!
Congratulations. Finally, a perfect video that conveys a message clearly and distinctly. I really want to see more videos from this channel, because You are good. You should be a teacher 🙂
I've been dabbling with Obsidian for a little bit but didn't entirely grok its value until I stumbled onto your videos. Super clear and concise -- much appreciated! 🙏🏽
Happy to hear that, Barb! It's definitely not you... Obsidian is many things, but it isn't the most user-friendly app for sure. It took me a while to grok it too!
This was such an awesome video! I have never had any interest in Obsidian, however after watching your video, and trying it out while following you tutorial, wow! This app has so much potential and so many features. This is exactly what I have been looking for the replace Evernote. Thanks for making this video Nicole and hope you have an awesome day!
Nicole, good video, and I especially liked your comment at the end about notes not needing to be organised and that they just need to be useful to the person whose notes they are. Thanks for that.
Wow. Nicole, you are so helpful! I knew immediately that Obsidian was going to be a great note-taking app and I wanted to be able to use it quickly. My technical knowledge is quite limited and I was getting lost. Your video is so succinct and step-by-step and your personal delivery is really pleasant. Nice voice and a perfect speed. Fantastic for newbies like me. I look forward to seeing your other videos and will recommend them to others.
IDK why your video was buried so far in the search results for "Obsidian Second Brain," but it was worth the trouble! Your guide and presentation to the software is THE BEST on YT 💖 gurl thank you so much for your work !!
Hi, Ate! Maraming salamat sa video. After opening the app for the first time, I got quite overwhelmed (or underwhelmed); I had no idea what to do except to type (a simple note). I’m glad your video is very beginner-friendly. Thank you so much!
I love your style. I was the Geek Ambassador for my local university's IT/HR department. Technical trainings like these are hard to put together well. You did a great job!
As a teacher, researcher, and dungeon master starting to use Obsidian to organize my notes, I found this video useful. I’ll recommend this video for people curious about how to use Obsidian. Thank you. ☺️
Nicole, this is really helpful. I have tried to use Obsidian before, and I've watched quite a few videos, but this is the first time that I've actually "got it" So many thanks to you. I'll be back to watch more of your stuff.
I’m impressed with this channel. I recently discovered and I’m already returning to put the info you taught in practice (sorry for my English). You can definitely teach something! Thanks again
Thank you so much for your vids on Obsidian! I just discovered it today after happening across a comment about it on another channel about Notion, then I found your comparison and introduction vids and wow! I think after well over a decade, I've finally found something that I can gather and write all my notes on for my story comic! I've tried paper notes, Notepad notes, yWriter, Notepad++, mobile writing apps, Acode-- and I think this is what I always wanted! I manually ported most of my text files to it today, and ahh my notes already look so much better and easier to access all at once. I love it so much, and especially how customizable Obsidian is. I've been playing with it all day❣️ Thank you again for sharing your knowledge on Obsidian, I'll watch more of your lessons as I go!
I'm saving this for tomorrow. I really enjoyed your other video about why Obsidian rocks. I had it installed once before, but now I'm ready to really get going!
I just started researching the Zettelkasten note taking stuff and while it seems simple enough I could never understand how the heck to organize it or make all my notes connect together and its so overwhelming, this video saved me tho thank you!
I was looking for a beginner friendly Obsidian tutorial video & yola found your this video. Thanks for this beginner friendly video. New subscriber :-)
Hi Fadu, thank you for reaching out to let me know this was useful! I do think Obsidian can be extremely complicated, so I wanted to give a simpler introduction. I'm really glad you liked it!
This is amazing! I like how steady you go with the tutorial and explain the little things. It help a lot for someone that is completely new to this. Amazing explainer, im subscribing!
It's late November but I don't know why I enjoyed the "Happy Valentines Day" so much hahah New to Obsidian but finding these super helpful! Thank you!!
I love obsidian so hard, I started using it a couple of months ago. My favourite feature is the graph view, it's amazing to see how all my notes are connected.
Thank you so much for sharing this, i was curious about obisidan but thought that my messy notes have no place in this tool after watching other super complex videos about this. Thanks for enlightening me that it's actually prefect for messy notes! Perfect for me!
Hi Annika! Yeah, my notes are definitely messy! There are lots of people doing neater or prettier things with their Obsidian vaults. But I feel like if I put in that work to make my notes look nice, I wouldn't be as productive!
@@nicolevdh Totally agree with you. I've been exploring Notion as well but that was a complete rabbithole for me architectual-wise and i was not productive at all, but at least had a bit of fun :D. Anyways, since this post i've also explored Zettlekasten thanks to you, and this feels so much more me than anything. Thank you again for all you content! It has helped me alot so far!
Super useful and well-presented. I've just gotten into a new field and have a zillion bits of data I realized I was losing track of. Obsidian looks like an absolutely perfect solution that I discovered in part through your videos about it. Today is Day 1, I already feel like I'm off to a good start. Thanks again!
Thank you ! I've been trying to use obsidian for a while but stumble over how to use it more efficiently. And that was the problem. It's meant to be a reflection of your brain, so it is normal if it is chaotic. Because it's always evolving. Time to redo it from scratch :)
thanks for this, I was looking for an easy to understand tutorial as I already take a lot of notes and wanted to get into Obsidian. there's so many features!! and this is a good way to start
Glad you think so! I too came to Obsidian as a note-taker. I think you'll be happy with what you find! (In any case, I was.) Welcome to Obsidian and the Obsidian community!
This was a very clear and useful video. I see that you have other possibly D&D related Obsidian videos. They've been added to my list to watch AND, I've subscribed. THANK YOU for taking the time to make this video it's really helpful and well done.
Yay! I do have a lot of D&D/TTRPG stuff. I've got five regular games going so it's on my mind a lot. Here's a playlist since you mentioned that: th-cam.com/play/PL-1Nqb2waX4XNDgF4y7Gcc2qaPmjWZHaR.html Thanks for watching. Happy I could help! :)
Appreciate the video. Was very clear and well paced. Starting to work with Obsidian(coming from a mess of VS Code notes laying all over the place) and hadn't considered just creating links on topics I want to expand on later, then creating the blank pages, filling them out and re-linking to other mentions elsewhere. Really cool.
I use VS Code as well! I often open up my vault in VS Code, especially when I'm writing Templater scripts for Obsidian or when I want to do a Replace All. So cool that we can use the same notes in both. I'm really glad you liked the video! There's a neverending amount of stuff to create notes on, so I definitely have a lot of links to nonexistent (as of yet) pages.
Many thanks, Nicole! This video was really helpful - short, to the point, exactly the info I needed to get started with Obsidian. I'll check out your other videos too, as I get deeper into using Obsidian.
Nicole, thank you for sharing this! Your explanation was clear, concise and extremely helpful. Stoked to start my personal knowledge management journey with Obsidian. Looking forward to more of your content!
I appreciate your videos a lot, while I'm not the target audience for this video (but I am for most of the others in your channel, including Obsidian for D&D, my god what a great idea), this one was very useful to introduce other people to Obsidian, so I just wanted to hop by to give you a dopamine hit, kudos on your work :)
Hi Nicole, good work. I am a paper planner user who is looking at Obsidian. I like Notion, but no easy offline access. Many people forget just how useful paper is. I thrive with paper calendars and to do lists. No internet needed. I will follow you because Obsidian is a great app I can access offline.
I tried using obsidian, but recently started using Roam. I am still a beginner and need to improve my systems, so seeing how others approach these note graph systems is super helpful! Thanks for this video!
Hey Sid!! I actually came from Roam, after being a "Believer" and (small) investor. I left because of the founder and because an instance of data loss that made me realize how unacceptable it is for me to lose ANY data. But I do think lots of Obsidian workflows are compatible with Roam!
thinking about switching to obsidian from notion. like, yes, i'm a little obsessed with setting up databases and notion enables that, but since i started outsourcing some of the tasks i used it for (google sheet for budget, tweek app sore simple plans for certain days, found a separate habit tracker app i'm mostly content with) the whole thing started feeling kinda clunky, in a fashion. and i still find ways to indulge myself in making it look pretty first since the options for that are readily available, despite the fact that this approach never worked for me and i'm a stream of conciousness kinda person (which makes databases sometimes hard to set up properly because you need to account for a lot of structural data ahead of time and then try to conform all the future entries to that). the day-mode is a bonus as well, i was afraid it only had a dark mode (it can be really hard on the eyes, even for a person who uses dark mode a lot). maybe obsidian will make me to chill out a little, be more laidback about note-taking (i really like the backlicking feature, not gonna lie). thank you for your video! it was very informative, and a great introduction to the idea of this program! very clear-cut, all the essential information without meandering into "what cool tricks you can do" territory.
Nicole, thank you so much! I've been struggling with keeping track of my ideas and plotpoints and mainly relying on my memory, I know this is going to really allow me to relax a little 😊 Your video was very clear, too!

My technical knowledge is quite limited and I was getting lost. Your video is so succinct and step-by-step and your personal delivery is really pleasant. Nice voice and a perfect speed. Fantastic for newbies like me. I look forward to seeing your other videos and will recommend them to others.
Yay! I'm so glad to hear I helped you find your way! That's so encouraging. Welcome to Obsidian and the Obsidian community! <3
IDK why your video was buried so far in the search results for "Obsidian Second Brain," but it was worth the trouble! Your guide and presentation to the software is THE BEST on YT 💖 gurl thank you so much for your work !!
Thanks for helping start! I've been looking for a tool like this for some time now. Your tutorial has finally made this accessible to me.
You are such a great teacher. So easy to follow. Thanks so much for getting me excited about Obsidian!
Thank you, Kristen!! I hope you're still as excited about Obsidian (I know this is a late comment).
Thanks, Cameron! I appreciate the kind words. I'm always trying to improve!
As a teacher, researcher, and dungeon master starting to use Obsidian to organize my notes, I found this video useful. I’ll recommend this video for people curious about how to use Obsidian. Thank you. ☺️
Yeah, lots of use cases there! Glad you're starting to use Obsidian! Interested to hear how you go. Thanks for watching!
Nicole, this is really helpful. I have tried to use Obsidian before, and I've watched quite a few videos, but this is the first time that I've actually "got it" So many thanks to you. I'll be back to watch more of your stuff.
Hi Patricia! I'm so happy to hear that I helped you get to that "aha" moment. :)
I've been playing with it all day❣️
Thank you again for sharing your knowledge on Obsidian, I'll watch more of your lessons as I go!
I am glad I came across your video. You got a lovely personality. Your speak clearly and you're very good in explaining. Many Thanks for informing us
Thank you Nicole your pace and voice are perfect. Informative, easy to follow along.
Hey, thank you! I'm very happy you found it easy to follow along. :)
Thank you for this video! I am LOVING this application. Appreciate your time in making this video.
Thank you!!
Haha! You can celebrate Valentine's Day any day! Glad you enjoyed that.
I love obsidian so hard, I started using it a couple of months ago. My favourite feature is the graph view, it's amazing to see how all my notes are connected.
Happy to hear that! I love that part about it too! I know graph view is just a visualisation, but it's still really freaking awesome.
I love the Spongebob esk music in the background, Thanks for the help Nicloe!!
Haha, I didn't think of that when I chose it. Well, glad you like it anyway. :)
holy shit, you recorded this on feb 14th 2022, and i just discovered your channel today exactly 2 years later!!!
Yay, thank you so much! Happy to have brought it to your attention. I think it's perfect for getting into a new field and all that entails.
I can't take how nice and giving you are Nicole. Thank you.
Awww, thank you! That's sweet of you. I'm glad you enjoyed the video! :)
Great comprehensive introduction to Obsidian. Appreciate the clear structure of your how to :)
Thank you for keeping the lessons small and speaking at a rate that lends itself to me following along in Obsidian with you!
Thank you, Susan! That's what I was going for! I'm very happy to know it worked for you. Welcome to the Obsidian community! :)
I love your Obsidian content. Thank you!
Excellent video. You have a very clear communicative voice! Cheers Vancouver Island Canada
Hi James! I really appreciate your support. Thank you! (P.S. I love Vancouver Island! I have family there!)
Thank you ! I've been trying to use obsidian for a while but stumble over how to use it more efficiently. And that was the problem. It's meant to be a reflection of your brain, so it is normal if it is chaotic. Because it's always evolving. Time to redo it from scratch :)
Yay! Sometimes starting from scratch is just the best thing. Whatever keeps you going, right? :)
thanks for this, I was looking for an easy to understand tutorial as I already take a lot of notes and wanted to get into Obsidian. there's so many features!! and this is a good way to start
Glad you think so! I too came to Obsidian as a note-taker. I think you'll be happy with what you find! (In any case, I was.) Welcome to Obsidian and the Obsidian community!
I love your video, great introduction to Obsidian. I started Obsidian quite smoothly thanks to you.
Thank you so much! That's great to hear. Welcome to the Obsidian community! :)
I just recently started to look into Obsidian and this is the most useful intro video I've seen! Thanks for helping us out 🙌
Hi Sophie! Wow, thank you! I'm glad it helped you. :) I know it can be daunting to start because there's a lot that Obsidian can do!
Hello from the Self-Hosted podcast! Very good information Nicole!
Here's a playlist since you mentioned that: th-cam.com/play/PL-1Nqb2waX4XNDgF4y7Gcc2qaPmjWZHaR.html
Thanks for watching.
You ar the best, I always learn so much from your videos not only the ones relates to obsidian. Keep going!
Thank you, I appreciate that! I've been a bit Obsidian-heavy lately but I definitely have some other ones planned soon!
This is a clear and very helpful introduction to Obsidian.
Many thanks.
Many thanks, Nicole! This video was really helpful - short, to the point, exactly the info I needed to get started with Obsidian. I'll check out your other videos too, as I get deeper into using Obsidian.
Glad to hear it, Andrew! :) I'm hoping to create more introductory videos soon!
Wow. Best Beginner's tutorial ever, really loved the workflow part.
Yay!! I really appreciate that, Azzam! Welcome to the Obsidian community! :)
Hi, following your obsidian videos...I started last month, obsidian helped me organise and store my thoughts. Great work.
Thank you so much! I'm happy I've been able to help, and welcome to the Obsidian community!
Awesome tutorials on Obsidian! Love them! Love your work and your clear explanations. Thank you !
Hey Nicole, I really enjoy watching your videos, after I started to use Obsidian one week ago. Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much, Tom! Welcome aboard the Obsidian train!
I loved how you explained everything. This is seriously so helpful. Thank you so much!!
Thank you very much for taking the time to explain Obsidian, you're the best!!!
Nicole, thank you for sharing this! Your explanation was clear, concise and extremely helpful. Stoked to start my personal knowledge management journey with Obsidian. Looking forward to more of your content!
Yay! Welcome to Obsidian and the community! I hope you get as much use out of it as I have.
Gotta love that dopamine!! :D Thanks for the encouragement!
Thanks so much, just started with Obsidian and this is a great walkthrough.
I was so overwhelmed and this helped me so much! thank you
Hi Nicole, good work. I am a paper planner user who is looking at Obsidian. I like Notion, but no easy offline access. Many people forget just how useful paper is. I thrive with paper calendars and to do lists. No internet needed. I will follow you because Obsidian is a great app I can access offline.
I haven't used paper for note-taking/planning for a while, but offline access is very important to me. Glad you're still enjoying Obsidian anyway! :)
Just stumbled over this video and it is amazing. You explained this in a really nice way for me. Thanks a LOT :)
Hey! Thank you! I'm very pleased to hear you liked the video.
Wow, second video I watched. This is an easy sub: don't stop what you're doing! ("vooral doorgaan..!" : )
Dank je wel! Glad you're enjoying the videos, and welcome! :)
I am watching this on Valentines 2023, so your saying happy was pleasant. Happy valentines day!
Awesome! Happy Valentine's Day to you too!
thinking about switching to obsidian from notion. like, yes, i'm a little obsessed with setting up databases and notion enables that, but since i started outsourcing some of the tasks i used it for (google sheet for budget, tweek app sore simple plans for certain days, found a separate habit tracker app i'm mostly content with) the whole thing started feeling kinda clunky, in a fashion.
and i still find ways to indulge myself in making it look pretty first since the options for that are readily available, despite the fact that this approach never worked for me and i'm a stream of conciousness kinda person (which makes databases sometimes hard to set up properly because you need to account for a lot of structural data ahead of time and then try to conform all the future entries to that).
the day-mode is a bonus as well, i was afraid it only had a dark mode (it can be really hard on the eyes, even for a person who uses dark mode a lot).
maybe obsidian will make me to chill out a little, be more laidback about note-taking (i really like the backlicking feature, not gonna lie).
thank you for your video! it was very informative, and a great introduction to the idea of this program! very clear-cut, all the essential information without meandering into "what cool tricks you can do" territory.
Nicole, thank you so much! I've been struggling with keeping track of my ideas and plotpoints and mainly relying on my memory, I know this is going to really allow me to relax a little 😊 Your video was very clear, too!
Hi!! :D I'm so SO glad you've made these vids! I'm just learning Obsidian and it's changing my daily routines so quickly! Thank you!!!
Glad to hear it! Obsidian did the same for me, so I'm happy you're finding it useful too! :)
Thanks Nicole! You're awesome. Love your approach and generosity to share your experience! Thanks again!
Starting to look into Obsidian, great intro video Nicole!
Thanks, Sam! Happy to answer any questions if you have any as you learn it! :)
Thanks Nicole...very clear and well paced....I hope I can become a presenter like you!
Thanks for the compliment! I'm just doing my best, like everyone else. :) I'm constantly trying to improve my presenting skills too.
Thanks!
That's so nice of you! Thank you, James!
