      I had one, lovely little dog who single handedly eradicated the rat infestation in the 90 stall barn on our breeding farm. He was ferocious but good in down times since he would kill 2-3 Wharf rats every night. I even had to make use of that "handspan" tail to drag him out of a rathole he was determined to clear. If they have that prey drive they are indispensable in a situation like that. But if they don't have a big job to do they are indeed holy terrors.

      @huskygold5319 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Exactly! I've been looking like crazy for a dog I can learn to groom on that's not a poodle type dog. I don't like anything about the breed and they would just be a bad match overall for me. I really, really wish I could learn on the dog I have but she's a lab and rarely needs to be groomed I don't like small dogs not because I don't think there pretty but because I want a sturdy dog I can go camping and biking with. It's been a real struggle to find the right breed but it's important I find one that can suit what I need and that I can suit what they need.

      My Newfoundland actually did very well in a trailer (not exactly as small as many apartments, but still smaller than you'd expect for a 150 lb dog). She was walked twice a day for a total of less than two miles, had two solid meals a day, and laid around like a lazy mfer the rest of the time. Lucky (my late Newfie gal) stayed nice and healthy, living to 15 years old and knew nothing but love in her life.
      That was my best friend, I mourn her still 8 years later, so I apologize for just spewing a lot out in my little trip down memory lane. This was an unnecessarily long-winded way of saying that loud, large dogs aren't always ill-suited for smaller living quarters.

      @@vikingdogmanship I actually believe Jack Russells are great dogs when responsibly bred, but they need the proper training and physical exercise requirements (of course). Genetics play a huge part in a dog's temperament as well and my Mom's dog was poorly bred, so that explains her temperament as well as her lack of professional training. She was also my childhood dog, and I continue to love her to this day.

      @jfn467 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like my little furball, got him from a shelter in 2016, no history, but the shelter nuter all dogs and I assume he lost a lot of his JRT ADHD by that, in saying that, he requires a fair amount of stimulation, both mentally and physically, but it's definitely not to any excessive levels. When I got him I trained him intensively to function as such as, inside (I live in an apartment...), no play, no high energy, same for car/bus/train and cafes and other public human environment, but out in the fields and forest he's all free to live his best life. He was obsessed with tennis balls, to the point where he could lie on the floor for a full day staring at the locker he knew I had them in, after we'd played with one. Managed to desensitize that by reprogramming the energy level expectations he had for them, took a lot of effort but definitely worthwhile as now it's a high value object, his #1 favourite reward, that I am in control over, very useful.

    • @jfn467
      @jfn467 ปีที่แล้ว

      In general, all work I have done with this little snugly boy, is based on Ceasar's practices of first building confidence and trust, and then learning to understand your dogs energy levels, and how to control them, people can say what they want about Ceasar, but everyone who's met my JRT is highly impressed, and I knew nada about dog training before I decided to get him, he's a full creation of Ceasar's methods. Reason I got a Jack is that I can be quite demanding and need challenges to not lose focus (yes, kind of ADHDish), and couldn't imagine a dog that just followed blindly, trust me, it works.... 😅

      Some aren't into chasing. It depends on the parents and if they were bought up in a farm environment and exposed to it. For some, its in the genes also but there are some that can happily live in small apartments and not want to chase things.

      I ran the county shelter for two years and had a border collie turned in. He didn't get much run time so he began doing vertical donuts in the kennel. Up one wall, literally across the chain link top and down the opposing wall til he was tired. I called a local border collie fanciers club the day he was cleared for placement. Thank God they came right away, took him and placed him. I felt so sorry for him in the kennel.

    100% relate to this. Bought a border collie in our first apartment and we came home our first day away at work and returned to a mess.
    We spent the week potty training and fixed that but got calls she was barking all day and again came back to a ruined couch. Only had her for 2 weeks before we rehomed her

    My neighbors have a Jack Russell Terrier, he is the sweetest dog ever. He doesn't fear my American Akita, in fact he acknowledges him as his neighbor and for that reason he doesn't care too much about him. When we go for a walk sometimes he'll just be on the road chilling and even though he doesn't play with my dog, they get along pretty well. Also he almost never barks, just like mine and he is fine with stray cats too. Mine wants to hunt them down but the Jack Russell? He is barely their size so even if he wanted to he cannot attack them and come out victorious

    My parents border collie, when I was in high school, their fence was not completely up yet in their backyard, and that little smarty pants would keep all the little nieces and nephews nice and safe in the back yard. I was amazed, he was also a little squirrelly and growl at some people. I decided he was just an outstanding judge of character because every one of my friends growing up that he growled at, or one case bit ended up be pretty terrible people. I don’t justify dogs biting, it was bad behavior, but that is still the only person he ever bit and in a way I understand why he did now. My sweet dog made me seriously question that guy from then on and the mistrust ended up being for the better. Amazing and almost human like intelligence to the point it can feel creepy.
