  • Alright I've made a few of these now but I think this one will cover a lot of the elements my previous entries into this saga may have left unaddressed. I do plan on exploring more solutions to this issue that seems to be universal within the system but for now this is the basic approach and I hope it is helpful.

    Thanks for the video!
    What I found incredibly helpful was showing us the part in the camera THEN pulling out the mirror box and showing it again.
    I totally missed it but when I knew what to look for I found it.
    Thanks!

    Can you add a picture of the part you were prizing and lubricating?

    I really appreciate the effort but please consider including stills? I can hardly make out anything and it's an easy measure. I hate to see you put so much effort into this with so little value coming out in the end. "That little piece" doesn't really help me when looking at a hundred unclear gears and levers:(

      A very messy work bench not enough detail in the video stills would help i think a very slapstick aproach to repairing too much talking not enough detail

    Great video, I've been studying it repeatedly since I got a used ME Super, but have run into another snag.
    When I first got it, the mirror was stuck up. I followed the advice you had in another video and force the shutter down and it worked! But then, infinite wind! OK, so I follow the steps in this video. I think I was able to prod the arm of interest, but the issue is I can't test it.
    Upon reassembly, nothing seems to catch when moving the film advance arm. If I tighten the cam over the spring assembly, it catches a bit but inevitably slips. Did I over-lube it? Or is something put together wrong?

      Hi there, I actually repair these for a living and know exactly what the issue is. The problem is a flathead screw located on the mirror body assembly. The repair is very simple but requires you to disassemble the camera entirely down to the point shown in 5:30 in this video. If you look at the central flathead screw that attaches the two arms together that he is actuating it is that screw. They put some sort of a threadlocker or oil that has gummed up and causes the arm to catch, giving the infinite wind issue. All you need to do is remove this screw, clean the surface with isopropyl alcohol q-tip, and apply some sort of tacky grease (i use automotive grease and it works flawlessly every time) and reinstall the screw. When reinstalling the screw just make sure you line it up properly as the screw has a shoulder that seats it into the arm, if you line it up incorrectly you might pinch the arm down and it wont work properly.
      You'll know everything is working well if you actuate the arm smoothly. You can also apply grease to some of the other surfaces where you see friction just to make sure. Reassemble the camera back together and the problem should not show back up again. Hope this helps you fix your problem I have repaired hundreds of these cameras with this exact issue and it was such a thorn in my side for so long.

    I have a problem with mine, the mirror is stuck and I can't wind when I release the mirror with a screwdriver from outside by pushing the part you mentioned on the mirror box, the mirror comes back, but still, I can't wind, when I push down that black hook where is a connection to external winder, I can wind, but then story repeats, mirror just stuck and I have to repeat everything again, maybe you know the solution to this problem?

  • @samgustafson308
    @samgustafson308 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think the root cause of this issue is the rubber bushing/bumper on the pivot. I took one apart with a stuck mirror and it had turned to goo. All the oil had seeped out of the gummed it up pretty bad. If you don't get the old degraded rubber out, I feel like the problem will reappear shortly. The

      Did you ever end up fixing your issue? After reading your comment im wondering where I can get replacement parts and it's not as simple as parts for other electronics

    • @samgustafson308
      @samgustafson308 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Tallermage I did, but it required a full disassembly. Take off the front plate then remove the mirror box from the front plate to access all the bad pivots. There's also a rubber bumper hidden in the damping cylinder that can degrade. For replacement bushings, I just stripped the sheathing from some 12 gage silicone wire and cut it to length. It's a pretty good match. But a lot of people think that you don't even need to replace the bushings. The ME, for example, uses the same mechanism as the ME Super but it doesn't use bushings.

    • @RompingBronco
      @RompingBronco  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There's actually a small gap between the body of the camera and the underside of the lens mount that's almost perfect for solvent oil application. I think one of my P30T's has this issue so I'll see about making a video more specific to that model!

    I was recommended silicon lubricant for this issue and have had good results with it, but have seen people advice against the use of any such lubricants. What do you think?

    • @RompingBronco
      @RompingBronco  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great comment/question, so the lubricant shown in the video is silicon based and that works about 90% of the time like I said however there is some concern regarding it's performance in lower temperatures it may stall out or if the pre existing gunk in the system wasn't flushed out fully it may adhere to that and cause the issue again or worse. However for this kind of application, one in which it isn't entirely direct I've found it to be best as something with less viscosity will get into other parts of the camera. Lately I've been using a very small amount of remington gun oil for very direct application and that seems to be effective but for the most part this oil proves effective in very small amounts

    A little better, but you do seem to loose the concentration on the little details, like linkages and focus, that’s camera focus. But hey it’s better and you will be saying well why don’t you go! Well I just think that it’s such a shame, but you know these cameras literally inside and out, like the lovely geek you are and i mean that respectfully, you adore cameras. However I used to talk to people who like you new so much, that you forget we don’t and I guess that’s why and think about this, how many times have you done the ME super video? I rest my case. DG

      It’s a common issue and there are many contributing factors that lead to failure so I think it’s worth discussing, I appreciate the input and will say I’m not the most knowledgeable about this I’m just trying to communicate what little I do know how I think would be most effective and entertaining but it’s not going to be for everyone so thank you for checking it out and sharing your opinion
