Years ago, a lady in my town asked me if I wanted a 4x4 F150 of hers that got stranded in a parking lot because she thought the clutch went out. She described what happened and I said it sounds like if she just put some more fluid in the clutch reservoir, it would start working properly. She got agitated and insisted the clutch was shot and asked again if I wanted the truck. I said sure, and proceeded to put some more fluid in my new free truck. I spent a lot of time in Oshawa. I was fortunate to be on the launch team for the 50th anniversary Vette in Bowling Green, KY. So many people flew their cars in from all over the world to take pictures in front of the factory and museum. I felt so cool being there. And, the plant manager was a bit of a local celebrity, so he would call the local PD. They would make sure they were absent on the nearby highway when he wanted to have a test drive.
A buddy of mine had a 5 speed manual Silverado that had a clutch that would keep losing pressure. My gut instinct was to check to make sure the hydraulic line wasn't loose - sure enough, it was. We tightened that down, manually bled it by just pumping it for a few minutes, and it was good to go. It's always nice to have a super simple solution to a problem that could potentially be a pain!
Massive respect for refreshing the brakes before you go out and try out the 700hp! The brake pad wear sensor was that small metal prong on the edge of the pad, it's called an audative wear sensor since it makes an absolute racket if the metal prong starts touching the rotor.
@@Samcrac Not all replacement pads come with them, and often they are bent out of shape. If they don't touch the rotor surface they don't do anything either. I always heard them called "squealers" because they were supposed to make that sound when you were on the brakes. But they seem to be less common place... which isn't good in a time when common sense is even less um common.
I was a mechanic in the Air Force for 24 years. More than half that I supervised younger less experienced mechanics. I can’t count how many times people would tell me it’s hard broke we need a new engine or whatever. I’d say let’s go look at your problem. More times than not it was a simple fix that the Airman missed. One time comes to mind when an airman wanted to replace a Detroit Diesel 471 engine because no matter what he did he couldn’t tune the fuel rack, he thought the engine was just worn out. I removed the valve cover took a really close look and found a push rod that was bent at the very tip of it, maybe a half inch of the end was bent. We ordered then replaced the $5 part and the engine roared to life. Just one example of many. I can only imagine this happens a lot with vehicles.

Crazy, even you showing the forum messages, I was exciting thinking I might see my replies from back in the day in the video! Amazing video, truly loved watching it. The wear 'sensor' is that little piece of metal at the top of the pad. When the pad wears down the metal scrapes on the rotor and makes a noise. That is the indication you need new pads.
Decades ago I bought a Datsun 240Z with a blown clutch dirt cheap. Drove it home in the evening with no clutch shifting by rev matching and shutting it off at stop lights, putting it in gear and starting it in gear. Back in the 1980s, my sister bought a Fiat where the clutch (on the automatic transmission) was slipping. It turned out that it had no transmission fluid. We refilled it and it was good for several decades. Never underestimate a seller's inability to diagnose a problem.

That little connecting cross pipe between the 2 exhaust pipes is for boosting lower and midrange torque. In some cars it is shaped like a big X. This was suuuuuuchh a good video. I’ve driven manuals for years and have been getting more and more into building my own cars and doing the work myself, but stuff like this requires a shop a lot of times because of my inexperience, but you taught me a lot in this video. Thank you dude. That is such a nice Camaro too! Good job brother!
If your clutch is completely gone, you can still move the car around by starting it in 1st gear. It helps when you have someone to push it at the same time, to reduce the strain on the starter..👍🏼
Outright bargain for sure! Thanks to the guy who misdiagnosed the clutch issue. Another great video Sam

If the brake fluid in the clutch actuation has adsorbed some water when the engine bay heat soaks after engine shutdown the water can boil creating small bubbles in the line and preventing proper clutch release when the vehicle is started. This confuses the owner because the clutch released just fine the last time that they drove it. The solution is a full fluid flush. A simple bleed will fix it short term but without changing all the contaminated fluid the issue will return.
5th gen ZL1 owner here the Headers/cats are the only Mods to the exhaust, otherwise it looks like a factory 5th gen ZL1 cat back I run the same setup, except I got an Xpipe welded in. Sounds GREAT that way.
Very cool video of the clutch slave cylinder working. That looks like the same clutch my c6 z06 has. And the approach of draining, refilling, and pumping the clutch to replace the fluid is what I did too. Your approach to fixing cars is just like mine, keep making these videos!
This was a very good video. Amazing how a misdiagnosis can get someone a great car. A little research and obviously experience… You will have a great car. Congratulations Sam! Very cool car.
I think that’s the cutest frog I’ve ever seen. Plus he’s obviously a car enthusiast judging by the way he was scanning over that engine (🐸Wow!), lol. 😂
Just bought my first car for $1000 because it had a “bad clutch”, had to pump it for 5 minutes to have a chance at going into gear. Guy said it would be a pretty easy fix regardless but not to have high hopes. $5 of clutch fluid and a total clutch bleed later and it was on the road shifting no problem at all and continues to run perfectly. Total cost was around $1800cdn
The carbon fiber hood was actually cheaper than a steel hood for GM because of the re-tooling that would be required for a steel hood to integrate with the supercharger bump. On a limited production car it wouldn’t have made sense
I'm sure I'm not the only one who if we had the money would give 21 thousand dollars for that car. My old boss had one and he had a mechanic put in some kind of cam and he finally got it up to a little over 500 horse and i know he gave alot more then that. Thanks for the video
My 2000 SS only goes a few hundred miles a season, but I make sure I keep an eye on the clutch fluid and usually just suck it out and top of with fresh fluid every spring, same with brake fluid reservoir
21k for a ZL1... Heck yeah everyday and twice on Sunday. Our auction isn't as rough on calling everything structural damage. But our CR guys did hit a ss Camaro with it because someone added a supercharger to it and trimmed the hood. I told them that just hurt it as the hood isn't a structural part.
Recently bought a 08 3500 6.7 cummins/g56/4x4 with a “bad clutch/doesn’t start or run” in auction. Clutch rod came out of the slave, popped it back in and fired right up, runs a drives great. Paid 4k for it, has a nice CM full skirt flatbed, fuel wheels and 0 rust. Got pretty damn lucky in my situation.
Really love your videos Sam - we just don’t have the monster motors in the uk for us mortals as they are really expensive to run but you tips for avoiding the big repair bills are ace 👍 keep it up Sam
Sam , we need to help you out with a large concrete pad to store you massive fleet of cars, maybe later we'll help you with a roof for them as well! Great job! Good content!
yeah, what he did wasn't honing. My dad bought a house and a camping trailer and a few cars from honing rotors. that was his job in a large service centre. I used to hang out sometimes after school. He'd put me on a bench to watch the 10 lathes turning "come get me when one stops" and he'd go off to change some tires or do something else. Me: so you get $5 per rotor x 10 machines and you can do something else while they're being turned? Him: yup, good gig eh? Me: damn right! The kicker? the machines were supplied and maintained by the garage. Now he wouldn't always have 10 on the go, sometimes 4, or 2 but he always had at least 2 going.
Man, I gotta admit I would like to get a newer camaro manual v8 drop top. I did own a 5th gen but when I found a mint 2002 Pontiac ws6 manual v8 in white with tan interior and only 28k I had to get it. The last of the pop up and down headlights baby. I guess I'm weird since I'm a German car guy my baby is my rs5 and cls63. But I also like my 92 cutlass supreme convertible. I guess we all have our differences. One thing that drives me nuts is I have a lot of respect for puddin fab shop and vice grip and even pole barn garage. However I've never seen one of them with a killer stereo install in their rides. I don't have a single ride that doesn't have subs and top of the line stereos. Since not every car comes with a bang and o stereo... Nice video Sam very informative. Funny 25k is what I gave for my 06 Mazda rx8 shinka back in 2008 with only 1800 miles as a demo for a manager. Nowadays you have to buy a 5 year old car with 60 to get below 30k
You call yourself " a German car guy" your post, clearly states that you're a "car whore" you have no clear preference, no indication of brand loyalty . The only thing you're consistent with is "killer / bang and o stereo, which has absolutely nothing to do with performance and is forever more of a liability than an asset. to each their own but you're a confused individual, who you are, and who you think you are, is two completely different people.
@samcrac that black box you see at the front is called an intechiller. A company in Australia makes it. And it uses your AC system to cool the fluid going through the heat exchanger for the supercharger. Depending on which one that is they're actually may be a switch somewhere where you flip it and it will divert all the AC freon to just the inner chiller. That thing is able to cool your air intake temperatures by 70° f
The brown tree frog approves and so do I! You know, I have a nice garage space for that blue Corvette. I'd even drive it for you a couple of times a month.
I saw it when he started the car when the clutch was dead, figured he'd get to it in the video...massive crapshoot buying a modded car, this thing has had a rough life since the original owner. Look at the subwoofer ground lol.
ahhhhh its literally my dream car!! what an absolute score you got there Sam, when i move to America my two goals are to become a licenced gun owner and to have a ZL1 😂
This is now the second time this year I've had someone affiliated with the auction tell me the car has a "bad clutch" when it was a hydraulic issue. Pedal going to floor is NOT a worn clutch!
I think the best steal I've ever made was on a really nice 2nd generation Toyota 4Runner I bought back in the 2010s. It was basically like-new condition with 40,000-ish miles but the owner had blown a head gasket and didn't want to fix it. While I was looking up parts, I found a recall for that engine for the head gaskets. Called a local Toyota dealer, asked if the recall was still active, they ran the VIN I gave them and said the recall applied and had never been done, so I bought the truck no questions asked for $1500. Took it a dealer, they put in a whole new engine for free, and I drove off in a basically brand new truck. I won't say how much I sold it for but it was A LOT more than I paid.
Hey Sam! Oil pressure??? I noticed the gauge says 0 psi. 13:49 Top left gauge in front of the shifter. (Edit: Oh I guess you showed it at the end of the video aswell) Hopefully its just a sensor.

Damn love me a ZL1. Beautiful car!
If your clutch is completely gone, you can still move the car around by starting it in 1st gear. It helps when you have someone to push it at the same time, to reduce the strain on the starter..👍🏼
Your honesty, humility, and demonstration of your hard work are what make your films so amazing. Warm regards. No magic, real.

The cooler you see appears to be a killer chiller or FI interchiller, and it employs air conditioning to keep the IATs in the blower low.
What's with the bot comments below?
Outright bargain for sure! Thanks to the guy who misdiagnosed the clutch issue. Another great video Sam
If the brake fluid in the clutch actuation has adsorbed some water when the engine bay heat soaks after engine shutdown the water can boil creating small bubbles in the line and preventing proper clutch release when the vehicle is started. This confuses the owner because the clutch released just fine the last time that they drove it.
The solution is a full fluid flush. A simple bleed will fix it short term but without changing all the contaminated fluid the issue will return.
Sam's on a roll lately with these great auction car buys!!!
Your honesty your humbleness and a show of your hard work is what makes your videos so amazing. Thanks. No magic, just real.
I am amazed by all the car knowledge you have and the chances you take with your money!
Say hello to your stepmother also.
Great car, with approax 700 bHp I would first of all change at least the two different front tires.
5th gen ZL1 owner here the Headers/cats are the only
Mods to the exhaust, otherwise it looks like a factory 5th gen ZL1 cat back
I run the same setup, except I got an Xpipe welded in. Sounds GREAT that way.
This content is so good! I'm hooked!
with those puppies i'm not surprised... BOIT!
Very cool video of the clutch slave cylinder working. That looks like the same clutch my c6 z06 has. And the approach of draining, refilling, and pumping the clutch to replace the fluid is what I did too. Your approach to fixing cars is just like mine, keep making these videos!
This just made what I needed today!
Grew up in Land o' lakes. Its always enjoyable to recognize the scenery during your drives.
I had to replace my carbon fibre hood insert on the ZL1 I used to have and it cost $5000.
This looks like a carbon fiber insert?
The 5th gen ZL1 hood isn't CF only the insert is CF. The hood is aluminum. I know cause I have one.
hey you know a bot stole your comment
it's not a bot that stole your comment. It's some porn cam website. The desperation online is mind boggling. Too funny
Getting it at that price was a find and lucky you got the fix figured out
I prefer this type of video in that it is a domestic car that someone as dumb as me could buy and get parts for without taking out a home equity loan.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who if we had the money would give 21 thousand dollars for that car. My old boss had one and he had a mechanic put in some kind of cam and he finally got it up to a little over 500 horse and i know he gave alot more then that. Thanks for the video
Another hit from my favorite creator!
I do like this model series of the Camaros. Great video! 👍🏻🇬🇧
That's an interchiller. Had one on my 06 supercharged gto. Uses the AC to cool the supercharger coolant.
Hi Sam - good to see you back online. With the recent weather over there I wasn't sure if you were OK. Hope everything has dried out now :-)
My 2000 SS only goes a few hundred miles a season, but I make sure I keep an eye on the clutch fluid and usually just suck it out and top of with fresh fluid every spring, same with brake fluid reservoir
Love the 5th gen ZL-1. What a car. Congrats Sam.
Thanks man! They're pretty awesome!
Glad to see you made it through the hurricanes. Stay frosty and keep making content.
Great video! It’s very informative and there’s a lot to learn if you’re paying attention 🙌🏽
Your films are so great because of your honesty, humility, and demonstration of your hard work. Regards. Real, no magic.
lol!!!!
Love that whine!
Great video, great deal. I remember a video way back when you borrowed money from your step mom. Am I miss remembering? Keep up the great content.
Oh no. In the footage of the pizza car, Sam appeared youthful.
"and i dont want to turn it into a mustang" best car quote ever
Honing rotors was the norm for years and years … until cheaper quality parts came along and rotors became more affordable to replace
Yes, but modern pads are harder (no asbestos) and wear the rotors. The rotors are now a wear item.
@ I don’t change my rotors everytime. Maybe … every second time
yeah, what he did wasn't honing.
Now he wouldn't always have 10 on the go, sometimes 4, or 2 but he always had at least 2 going.
nice find lol i replaced the slave cylinders on my 91 toyota pickup a few months ago and felt like a genius
Nowadays you have to buy a 5 year old car with 60 to get below 30k
so much "Who cares' in your post not sure where to start... nobody came here hoping to hear all about you and your car wants
15:30 front tyres are completely different tread??!
Why is this so shocking to you?
@ it’s just weird first time I’ve seen it
Drift pattern xd
Been here since the money pit Jetta you’ve come so far keep it up Sam I love your videos!😄
The brown tree frog approves and so do I!
You know, I have a nice garage space for that blue Corvette. I'd even drive it for you a couple of times a month.
Nice car, good job, we love you Sam. Keep up the good work, God bless.
Thank you! Appreciate it!
@@Samcrac Anytime brother!
No one gonna talk about the 0 oil pressure at the end?!?
And at 13:50 when he is clearly driving it. Haha
@@skylerburreson9764 i thought that said 0 lol
I saw it when he started the car when the clutch was dead, figured he'd get to it in the video...massive crapshoot buying a modded car, this thing has had a rough life since the original owner. Look at the subwoofer ground lol.
ahhhhh its literally my dream car!! what an absolute score you got there Sam, when i move to America my two goals are to become a licenced gun owner and to have a ZL1 😂
Leave it to Sam to have a lift and still jacks the Camaro up out on the grass 😂 8:46
So someone got rid of a car because they were too stupid to realize the reservoir wasn't bolted on to anything and was upside down 😂
This is now the second time this year I've had someone affiliated with the auction tell me the car has a "bad clutch" when it was a hydraulic issue. Pedal going to floor is NOT a worn clutch!
Probably a poser.
The Alemio team is setting the bar high for presales. Transparency + bonuses = community trust!
Fixed in 3 minutes but took a 23 minute video to show how
Gotta make that bread
Even if it was stock, that sounds like a lot of car for twenty-one thousand! Additionally, I appreciate that you continue to work out in the field because the light is better! That's why we're here, so keep doing what you're doing.
I appreciate that!
@@Samcrac I too like it because you are working on your cars in a similar way to what we have to.
I would definitely buy it from you for 21000. Great find Sam.
My dad would put the car in 3 Rd gear on a 3 speed car while stepping on the brake if it stalls the clutch is good probably use 5 th gear now
Nice buy Sam!!! Even with a worst case it's still a DIY job.
Wow, only 6 s3x bots so far. Amazing!
And its about time you surveyed a REAL car, thanks.
No Ferrari? You’re slipping, Crac.
At least this one works..😂.
Always entertaining AND informative.
Thanks Sam!
Glad you liked it!
like the camera view into the clutch housing. Nice Camaro.
The louvers looked great.
congrats on your two post, great content, it was about time you can work on your cars with the car on the lift.
A good detail and that car is a keeper
One of your best vids.
Love your videos bro! So helpful, informative and entertaining. I would buy a car from you in a split second!
