Check out Jamie Saint Merat from Ulcerate. Best metal drummer of the decade IMO. Janne is obviously a great player but Dominator was the best Dark Funeral ever had. He hits harder (especially the kicks and using single strokes) and has a more interesting, memorable style.
This wasn't only informative and interesting, it was awesome !! Brother, you need to be doing more vids from production ! This is so valuable, I can't stress it enough. Maybe something like .. hey how would you record and process from a low end pov, like with only a focusrite 2i2 interface and basic software like cubase or fl studio in the basic versions (maybe even free software ?) - not only drums but other instruments, too. Idk, could be much - I'd just love to see more vids ♥️
Nice video! Not a metal guy but I have been looking for videos on how to better track drums with end intent to use some sample replacement (I'll will be recording samples of my own kit to use on my recordings via Trigger2). So, it finally dawned on me that the metal genre was good place to look for good info on specialized techniques for this purpose. And this video had a lot of good stuff in that regard. Thank you for that. You have my sub, and deserve many more. Also that old Yamaha kit sound great! The toms are tuned perfectly.
Super helpful and informative man, I'm glad to have stumbled upon this channel! I knew I recognized you from a with Frederick Nordstrom video. Also what is that Reaper skin you are using?
Origin Snow! It needs some tweaks to fit the latest reaper version but it's easy to figure out using the theme editor: stash.reaper.fm/v/4713/lf_origin_snow.png
Hi ! Very cool drums are tuned, respect to you and please, really copy the grid to the tama tuning (mechanical ) thank you ) if you come to visit ) so that I can adjust 8 19 12 14 16 inches of plastic remo here according to the grid tuning of the tuner I have a new imperror coated
Maybe i'm wrong. But the fact that we can see the Roland TM-2 processing audio, and the way the waveform in the trigger plug-in look like makes me think you did not explained every details about the trigger setup. Did you really record the sensor directly in the daw? Or did you record the output of the TM-2 and then replace this already triggered track with trigger2 ??
Hello! Good catch ;) In Janne's case I used the Roland RT-30k > Roland TM-2 (with his favorite sample loaded) > Octopre and did not replace the sample. I almost NEVER do that because of the latency from the trigger module. In Janne's case, he's used to working with that latency so that wasn't a problem at all. NORMALLY I would just go Roland RT-30k > Octopre > Slate Trigger 2 (in live mode, loaded with a sample that the drummer likes) and then send that back to the drummer. Hardly any latency that way when recording at a buffer size of 128.
@@obsidianrecordingstudios It came directly to my mind because I think it's not possible to achieve consistant triggering using the roland sensor into the trigger2 VST using double strokes ! I tried everything I could think of to make this work but the slate vst has this black box algorithm that is realy not optimised for real fast doubles strokes. You can sometimes see the signal going over the threshold and the vst not registering it as a hit, even with the release at minimum. Something the TM2 don't have any trouble doing with the very same kick tuning and muffleing. I had better result using AXIS eKit sensor into the trigger2 but it still misses some hit above the threshold. I am curently trying different VST that have the simplest algorythm possible, like SAMPLESWAP, but I need to experiment a lot more ! I hope I can one day find a VST that can work as good as a ROLAND TM2 ! Chers from france !
@@PierjanVadeboin I'm not sure about VSTs but if you're strictly looking for something to trigger your kick drum you might want to try the TrigMic laser kick trigger (if you haven't already). You can load it with your own samples and apparently it's the best on the market from what I've heard in terms of accuracy / latency: trigmic.com/en/product/trigmic-laser-pick/
One of the best extreme metal drummers to exist. very nice and humble guy as well!

Janne is a great player and a super cool dude!
Super nice to see and very informative. Thank you very much, greetings from Germany!
Very interesting and the song is a really cool one !! Kind of mix between Decapitated and Darkane !
A Finn, a Swede and an American walks into a studio...

Thanks Geoff! Gotta be my favorite toms... Hokkaido birch!
This is Great bro
awesome video! I did not even know about the 'under ride' mic trick. Thats a cool trick :p
Great vid and sounds! \m/
Obviously a great drummer! But for me what stands out are a few of his fills that are extremely tasteful!

This is my thoughts exactly, would like an answer to clarify the technique of recording the kick

Anyone know what band he was tracking for?
His old band Despite
Tajt trummis 😍
Just do it with 1 mic like Transilvanian Hunger
Lol
Don't forget to record in the toilet for extra 'atmosphere'!
Damn the drummer is good. I think this year I'll ask Santa to bring me a drummer that can actually play his s$%$ :)
