Which album was this recording for?
This was just a playthrough of 'Awakening' by Despite, but I've done loads of other recordings with Janne including 'God Ends Here' by Aeon.
Looking to get more separation when micing toms. Also, better rebound. Any videos on that?
Room size and treatment matters. The further away and more treated the walls are the less reflections you get coming back into the mics so that's huge. Angling the mics so that they get as little bleed as possible from the other parts of the kit (check out this one th-cam.com/video/bBCP34MG2hI/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=ObsidianRecordingStudios). SDC's will take less bleed than LDC's and large diaphragm dynamic microphones so try the SM98 it is god.. very controlled bleed and huge sound, way less bleed than a 421. More rebound? I'm not a drummer... tune higher!?
Very interesting and the song is a really cool one !! Kind of mix between Decapitated and Darkane !
Thanks for the video it helped me tune my set. I’ve always had someone tune them for me and it’s time I stop being lazy so this video helped .
Kiitokset, loistava napakka paketti!
evrything sound great until a drummer asking for a trv kvlt norweian black metal sound
I'm a little confused... so you tune both heads lower than the desired note but when you hit the tom with both heads resonating you're supposed to get a higher note somehow?
Yes. It confuses me too. But that's how it works.
Recently I dicovered your channel, and man, thanks for sharing your knowledge, it's very helpful. Greetings from Mexico!
Cheers brother!
I love the pentagram when demonstrating the star pattern. 😂 Keep it metal
So so happy to hear some stuff from LF//LT. What a massive record that was and still is to this day. My favorite album forever. Thank you for this interview Fredrik ❤️
Grattis för den här intervjun, väldigt intressant att höra Fredriks historia... -🤘
Oh wow, thank you so much for this ❤
🤘🤘🤘🤘
Quick note on translation: at 9:46, the correct translation would be "accept" rather than "enjoy". And I would add at 46:26, in parentheses, that "bang on the beetroot" means "cut to the chase". Great interview, thanks for sharing!
Cheers
🤘 Mäktig lyssning
Such a legend and awesome guy, great interview !
Very interesting!!
Absolutely appreciate the first longform interview with Fredrik ever ❤
Grymt jobb!🔥
Väldigt intressant! Bra intervju!!!
Fantastisk intervju!
Grymt!
thankx man - mutt is my uncle
Super nice to see and very informative. Thank you very much, greetings from Germany!
Trigger everything. The end.
This guy lmao
Thank you for the cheat sheet of the notes. Tuning toms is the hardest part for me, and the PDF hopefully will help.
A Finn, a Swede and an American walks into a studio...
triggers is a cheat....
No u
Listened to a lot of drummers talking about how they tune their kits, none of their methods clicked for me, lots of them just say "feel" and while I agree it does matter, I wanted a more professional method. I always knew there was more than just feel involved in all those great sounding drum recordings by big studios. They sounded musical, like an instrument should. I used your chart for my drums and the results speak for themselves, well at least I like them. This is the kind of sound I was going for, even though I don't do extreme metal, I do anything I like. I also like the fact that you don't shy away from tuning the kick drum high. Thank you!
Glorious!!!
Damn the drummer is good. I think this year I'll ask Santa to bring me a drummer that can actually play his s$%$ :)
Hey thank you for this awesome info. I am in a deep dive on the internet right now when it comes to drums tuning. Mainly for recording purposes so this helped a lot. And i see that many recording engineers use this aproach for tuning drums. Minor third interval between the reso and batter on the toms, loose kick heads, tight reso on the snare and then tune trhe batter for the tone. I see that this method is repetable and not some voodoo tuning that some people go on about on the internet. I just want to maintain the drum tuning :D And you know how drummers are. Many claim to know how to do it but few actually do :D Cheers from Slovenia and thanks again.
Thanks !
This wasn't only informative and interesting, it was awesome !! Brother, you need to be doing more vids from production ! This is so valuable, I can't stress it enough. Maybe something like .. hey how would you record and process from a low end pov, like with only a focusrite 2i2 interface and basic software like cubase or fl studio in the basic versions (maybe even free software ?) - not only drums but other instruments, too. Idk, could be much - I'd just love to see more vids ♥️
Dig your presentation, bro!
