This was one of the first punk singles I ever heard back in 1976, Sex Pistols were banned from the airwaves in the UK, just love The Damned. It turned me from prog rock to punk rock overnight. Also love their other singles 'Neat, Neat, Neat' and 'Stab Your Back'
Neat Neat Neat made me latch onto Brian James as someone with a distinct style and sound -- he's working from the Big Bag o' Chuck Berry riffs that all the English punk guitarists were, but he had a really light touch: he could play them forwards, backwards, at double speed, double-stopped and double-bended, or just break off in a totally different direction. (This is all way after the fact: I was born in the 80.) MUCH later, I'm listening to Lords of the New Church and I'm like "their guitarist sounds like Brian James. But he's English, and anyway, his style isn't THAT distinctive." But my instinct was right.
If you would have clicked the genius annotations, you would have seen that "Is she really going out with him?" is lifted from the intro to the oldies song "Leader of the Pack" -- it's not the singer saying that, it's people talking about the singer.
New Rose starts “Is she really going out with him? Ah! I got a feeling inside of me / It’s kind of strange like a stormy sea / I don’t know why, I don’t know why / I guess these things have got to be.” But James insisted it was a never a love song. “The rush of it - especially Rat Scabies’s drumming at the start and the opening riff - was like the heralding of a new era,” he said. “To be honest, I never thought about the lyrics. I just wrote them down. They were certainly not about a girl as I didn’t have one at the time and love was not on my mind. I suppose the words just fitted the tune. Afterwards I realised the lyrics were about this new era, this new emerging punk scene.” Real DIY band, not the Guru moulded peers, the production story is also worth a delve into...
Produced by Nick Lowe. I did not know that. Anyway, of all the bands of the late 70s punk scene, The Damned had the reputation of being the one with like, actual musicians. They had chops. (The Clash too, obviously, but The Clash are The Clash).
I am older than this song, but it feels like it has always existed - like Michelangelo's David always existed in that block of marble, just waiting to be exposed.
One of the best punk tunes ever. Anyone who doesn't like this, doesn't have ears! If you fancy trying a bit of anarcho punk, I highly recommend Zounds album, The Curse of Zounds.
I know you’re not keen on punk , but you MUST try ‘living on the edge’ by SLF (stiff little fingers) being a teacher you may like this track… how parents control mechanisms can cause resentment (felt by their kids)
through their career they straddled punk/rock/goth (when goth was goth not marilyn manson). I think you would prefer Eloise. It's my favourite and my first cat I had was named after it.
Thanks so much for reacting to The Damned. So here is the question, will you be the first person on TH-cam to react to Curtain Call by the Damned? If you want some money for doing it then my pockets are open! (Album version of course)

The Stranglers. They could play a bit too😉
@@BaldyFella They had a hell of a bass player.
Arguably the first Punk song.
I am older than this song, but it feels like it has always existed - like Michelangelo's David always existed in that block of marble, just waiting to be exposed.
Welcome to England x

It's called "At the edge". Just for the search.

Hi EwokToRemember, the correct reaction to this is to have a serious haircut, dye your hair and wear ripped clothing! Welcome to Punk Rock.
I always thought "is she really going out with him" was self-referential.

Listen to Reasons to be cheerful, by Ian Dury and the Blockheads...
Right at the birth of u.k. punk.
Great song, but I think "Neat Neat Neat" is superior.
I agree.
If you struggle with Punk music...you need to listen to the best. The Ruts!!! Shine on Me, Love in Vein, Something that I Said,so many.

This is a punk anthem.

God. You take 2 minutes of pure excitement and prattle on for over 9 minutes until I wanted to nod off.
Dear God, By Tim Steinfort - great tune - please do this one
Reaction request to Rhinoceros by Smashing Pumpkins. I’m not sure you have reacted to any Pumpkins yet.
Can you do some Tigran Hamasyan reactions?
Guns n roses cover of this is worth a listen 😀

I have a tune for you to review and you'll like it, Jaya The Cat, Unconditional love ,
I don't know what you usually listen to, but this somg was covered by Guns 'n' Roses.
Didn't know that! Thanks for sharing!
I think analysing the lyrics is kind of missing the point of a good punk record
