Salt is crucial to human (and animal) survival. HUmans have used it as a currency and fought numerous wars over it, over control of the trade, taxed it to finance empires and armies. Amazing stuff. Only recently has it become so cheap and undervalued as it is....kind of like the rest of food. There was a time when people were genuinely thankful every day there was food to eat, because there was no guarantee there would be.

One time, my husband and I were driving around, house hunting. We had our beagle in the car and happened to see a herd of goats. We pulled up to look at them and our dog started barking. The whole herd stiffened (some fell, but older ones who know how to manage the condition just stiffen up while standing). We drove off quickly, hoping no one saw. We knew what fainting goats were but had no idea those would faint.

They are bred this way so that they faint when predators come. The fainting goats are easier prey than the more valuable livestock they are hanging with. Sad but true.

@@SpiritBear12 yeah in the rubbish bin faint he nearly headbutted the house not to mention the bathtub and funny but a bruise when that table just dug into the lawn rather than tipping him off.

LOL! 9.9 for form. Actually, fainting goats ARE people. Or, people are "fainting" but not goats. Or, anyway, there's a neurological disorder like this (which I have, lucky me!) called "hyperekplexia." It's usually genetic (but can also accompany severe PTSD or diseases like Creutzfeldt-Jakob) and symptoms include a "pathological" startle response. Many of us look like we have CP or MS (and can wind up misdiagnosed) because of movement and gait disorders. Some of us use wheelchairs or other assistive devices. (I walk with forearm crutches.) Also, when startled we can jerk violently, cry out, or fall stiffly to the ground a la our intrepid goatly brethren. Yes, it can be a real pain in the ass. Thanks for asking. I don't know of anyone triggered by the IRS, though, which is probably a good thing. Sounds like he should be screened by a neurologist (and maybe an ENT specialist, too.) In addition to the startle issue, there are many reasons why people have balance problems as they age. (I'm 57. Short version: aging is weird.) Many of these problems have surprisingly simple solutions, and even if they don't it's still better to know what you're dealing with. : )
I feel bad, I used to hide and jump out to scare him when he would go up stairs to tuck us in for the night. I stopped when he said that he was worried that he might punch me out of reflex. He just turned 80 yrs old. You are right, it is neurological. Over 20 years ago, he thought he was having a heart attack, he was on the floor and couldn't get up. They found that he has a very rare bone spar in his neck pushing against the carotid artery, creating blood clots. Thank God they found what was wrong and fixed it, but he lost most of his sight in one eye. So now that he is older, he has bad knees, and a big belly from drinking beer and his balance is getting scary. I am so worried he is going to fall hard some day.
Getting older is sure a challenge, isn't it?

My brother had a fainting goat a while back. When I came over, he said, "Watch this!" And he clapped. The goat just stiffened up and fell over! Funniest thing! You must have just met a herd of them yourself just now! Too funny! Way too funny. My goats were just plain old, milk goats.
