  • Sarcasm is one of the approaches we use to communicate with people. Even though it is commonly used, most people don't know why we choose it and what consequences it creates. Learn more about sarcasm!

    Thank you. This is the first time I ever heard the truth about sarcasm. I grew up in an environment where I didn't feel safe speaking from the heart, so I learned to be cynical, passive-aggressive in my behavior patterns and speak in ways I thought were creative, yet we're sarcastic as a means of personal survival. This is all I knew until now.

      I'm going to risk disagreeing with Vita Jans. Sarcasm isn't simply a dark force that exists to dimenish covertly. Like any other form of humor sarcasm can be lighthearted and fun. When used inappropriately, it can be hurtful, create conflict, and mock people. Used in the right way, however, sarcasm can spark creative thinking in yourself and others . Sarcasm requires abstract thinking, which makes it a catalyst for innovation.

    I used to be one of those sarcastic people. I thought it was a sign of wit and, as you alluded to, intelligence though only now, some 10 years later, do I realize that it was a facade I made while trying to disguise inner pain, and this is how I see those who still practice this sort of communication. Sometimes I communicate with them with compassion while other times I just don't at all as I have no time for bitter people. The biggest lesson I've realized in this regard is not to be reactive to these kind of people. In fact, it helps a lot not to be reactive at all.

    I experienced sarcasm as cultural shock for the first time in NorthAmerica, I couldn't really understand it. Sarcasm is a form of intimidation, and you are totally right it is used to hide personal issues that the people who use it may not even know they have. Great video, thanks!

    Hi!
    Sarcasm is a very important communicative tool. If it would have been solely counterproductive than evolution would have driven into extinction many thousands of years ago.
    I use sarcasm many many times each day. In my experience it makes people trust me and feel comfortably in my personal space. It's true that my comments also have a tendency to make people feel uncomfortable. But in my experience it mostly makes either people lacking self confidence or close minded people people feel uncomfortable. I do not care about people like that to become uncomfortable because these types of people will often turn out to be bad (social) investments. So the harsh truth is also that sarcasm is a great social tool to prevent you from investing in people that are not worth investing in.
    Besides...
    It is my right as a human being to make people feel uncomfortable. Or otherwise... I am under no obligation to make people feel comfortable. If people would have the obligation to make people feel comfortable the police or military could not function for example. Bad idea!
    I will choose myself when to be kind and when not to be. That's not your choice to make for me.

    That all sounds Rosily wonderful,but low self esteem is only one condition in which sarcasm might be used . But, it is also used in circumstances where the outright opinion would be immediately shut down , where as sarcasm allows your opinion to float under the radar to allow it to possibly be mulled over for a longer period ( before the inevitable rejection of the opinion, lol)

    I had a contractor building my house and the one next door. He used child labour. I told him not to do it on my site n at least build a toilet for them, he never listened. One day he asked me "How are you" . I said I am glad, I really enjoyed ripping off these stupid kids by making them work for food and shelter.
    Another example. I had a lazy colleague always getting late with deadlines. Telling him straight facts never worked. Telling him "We celebrating your hardwork at lunch, we all know that you work very hard" after he was stirring coffee like a zombie.
    Statistically, sarcasm has more negative examples (implicit and explicit) as compared to violence. In fact, violence even gets away with positive examples in online content.
    Sarcasm can be a tool to diffuse tension, resolve conflicts and discover blindspots in awareness. Kitchen knives are dangerous but they are useful too. In 24 hours of a day, a couple of minutes of sarcasm can be useful.

    this is like saying that humor is meant to hurt people & put people down (which is true sometimes, but not always)...i.e. what you're describing can apply to sarcasm in some contexts, but it's not an inherent trait of sarcasm.

    • @vitajanas
      @vitajanas  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      My question then is why do we find it funny when joke hurts someone? What part of us enjoys seeing someone in emotional pain? Irony is funny, because we can laugh at the situation, life itself, perhaps our human nature, common threads, but sarcasm is mean to tease a person indirectly, but offensively. I don't know why we continue to do it when there is much suffering already. No need to add more bullying just because it is wrapped up in humor. And personally, I find it much funnier when joke is direct, honest, bold, instead of snarky and manipulative.

    • @jyotsnagupta23
      @jyotsnagupta23 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      May be at times the intention is not to hurt....but it is very risky to use sarcasm as humor for its very nature is subtle form of violence & aggression clothed in pleasantness & pleasing others & the user of sarcasm takes a safe harbour as he can't be adjudged incorrect directly. It's always wise to see the seriousness of humor
